Welcome to the Atlanta Chapter's Website. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta established the Atlanta Chapter on September 16, 1985. We are the oldest H.O.G. Chapter in Georgia. All of the officers hope you will take a look around and enjoy your stop here. Be sure to check out the Calendar. We try to keep a good variety of rides and events to fit into everyone's schedules. If you are a local or just passing through town and have any questions feel free to contact any of the Officers. If you are interested in joining the chapter, we have membership applications available here on the site. We are here to "Ride and Have Fun" and hope you will come out and join us soon. Mark’s Corner
What a great ride! I am writing this at Fontana Village, NC after a beautiful ride up to the Nantahala River for a day of white water rafting with 19 good friends and fellow chapter members. Tomorrow we ride back home through the edge of the Smoky Mountain National Park with some of the group riding the Cherohala Skyway in the Cherokee National Forest of Tennessee. The Paddle and Saddle Ride is just one of many rides that we have going this summer. Thanks to Bobby Conway for setting up the event for us and also thanks to Matt Langley who was road captain for the second group. The calendar has been loaded with rides and activities with more being planned for the fall. Don’t miss out. Take advantage of the opportunity to ride and enjoy the good times with your Atlanta Chapter.
The Georgia State Rally is just around the corner. It again promises to be an exciting event in Hiwassee, Georgia. I hope that you have plans to attend. See you at the Rally!

Attendance Jackpot
Congratulations to Hank Somma whose name was drawn for the August Attendance Jackpot. Hank was at the meeting to claim the $50. We will add $50 back to the Jackpot and start over for the next chapter meeting. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in “Good Standing,” a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there.
Please ride safe and responsible,

Safety Gaps
When riding in a large group, there are a few things to consider for safe riding. It is a good idea to leave safety gaps between riders to allow cars to enter and exit the group without causing harm to any riders. For instance, when a car driver wants to enter or exit an interstate they should wait for a safe place and time to do this, but often they do not. Therefore, it is a good idea to leave a two to four second safety gaps every so many bikes. I have placed emphasis on this during our rides this year as some of you may have noticed. This allows a car to safely enter or exit our group, and since most drivers don’t want to be in the middle of a motorcycle group they will typically move into the next lane. This safety practice is also helpful on two lane roads. Since large groups tend to move slower, some impatient drivers will try to pass. Rarely will the driver have enough room to pass the entire group. If you leave some space for other drivers, it will allow them to pass safely and move on from the group so we can continue to enjoy our ride.

SAFETY OFFICER’S ARTICLE
See: A Strategy to understand what is going on around you and to be constantly planning and implementing a course of action.
Search: Scan aggressively for potential factors and hazards. Scan not only what is in front of you, but the areas behind and to the sides. Search in three categories:
1. Road and surface characteristics
2. Traffic Control markings and devices
3. Other road users
Evaluate: Anticipate problems. Determine your safety margin; you must know your capabilities and limitations, the capabilities and limitations of your motorcycle, and the roadway and traffic conditions.
Execute: An action to maintain a margin of safety. Three action steps comprise the execution phase:
1. Adjust speed
2. Adjust Position
3. Communicate your intentions

Pig Ride Legend
One Pig - steady cruising rides of relatively short distance, easy on the throttle, few curves, etc.
Two Pigs - a bit longer or have some curves but nothing too challenging.
Three Pigs - the ride should be of moderate difficulty.
Four and Five Pigs - rides with a high number of curves, long distance, saddle time, road conditions, speed, and weather.

Mike Perdue, Road Captain
In Search of ABCs (Part II) – September 30
This will be Part II of the Search for ABCs. The only location I am sure we are hitting will be the City of Zebulon and Pike County. The plan is to make ten, or so, stops for ABCs and enjoys lunch together during the Search.

Barbers Vintage Museum – September 15
Join me for a leisurely ride to Barbers Vintage Museums in Leeds, AL, the largest bike museum in the south.
Home to the world’s best motorcycle collection, the museum now has more than 1200 vintage and modern motorcycles and race cars and the largest collection of Lotus cars as well as other significant makes. The collection is the largest of its kind in the world. There are approximately 600 of the 1200 motorcycles on display at any given time. These bikes range from 1902 to current-year production. The common street bikes represented, as well as rare one-off Gran Prix race machinery. The cost to get in the museum is $15.00 per adult. We can buy tickets at the door.
We’ll do lunch afterwards (not sure where as of yet).
Mark Cothern, Road Captain
Cathedral Caverns – September 1
Join Amanda and me on a ride to one of Alabama’s best scenic attractions. Cathedral Caverns has a massive entrance measuring 126’ wide and 25’ high. Inside the caverns, you will find some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created. With a constant temperature of 57-60 degrees, it is a great place to beat the heat on a summer day. The cost of the tour is $13 per person. We plan to ride out, eat lunch, and then take a tour at the caverns.

When Pigs Float – 3 Day Cruise to the Bahamas June 7, 2013
Ever want to cruise to the Bahamas with a large group of your closest friends. If so, make sure to make your reservations between now and September 12. I have reserved a group of rooms on a Royal Caribbean cruise for June 2013. I have mentioned this to many members, and so far we have a large group that is interested in going. This will be an event in 2013 to not miss. The cruise is open to all members and friends/family. Please note that there are some additional freebies that will be awarded to each stateroom based on the number of rooms that the group books. We are looking at the possibility of a cocktail hour with an open bar as well as some on board credits for each room. Below are the details of the cruise. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me. You can use a drivers license along with a certified copy of your birth certificate, if you do not have a passport.
