The Georgia Motorcycle Helmet Law
Under Georgia law, all motorcycle operators and riders must wear a helmet. In addition, eye protection is required if the motorcycle if not equipped with a windshield.
When riding in a state that does not require helmets, the state under which you are insured is the law for helmet riders. Your insurance may not pay for any accidents if you are in another state not wearing a helmet at the time of an accident.

Atlanta HOG Ride and a Friendship for a Lifetime
I retired in February 2007 and started paying more attention to the Atlanta HOG newsletter and the different rides that the chapter had to offer. I made note of one such ride. It was going to be on a Wednesday, nice long back road ride from HD Atlanta to Gadsden Alabama and a well-known Fish Restaurant. Putting some back road miles on the bike and having a good lunch sounded like a great day. Little did I know I was going to meet a fellow biker that would become one of my closest friends for a life time and beyond?
I didn’t really know anyone at the group meeting held at the pavilion at HD Atlanta that was my fault for not attending any meetings. We listened to the ride leader, talked about safety and signals and had a prayer and formed up to head out. I fell into the middle of the group to the left of an older rider and settled in for a great ride. A beautiful day, blue sky, perfect temperature, we gradually went from four lanes down to two and headed into some hills with nice climbs and dissents and curves, enough to make it fun but not so many that you couldn’t enjoy the scenery. We slowly descended down into a beautiful meadow where the road made sharp turns to the right and left and back again. As we approached a very sharp left turn I couldn’t help but notice the guy in front and to my right was not going to make the turn, instead he went off the road and straight into the weeds and brush, I made the left turn looking over my shoulder knowing this guy was going to hit a stump or log and crash and wondering what the heck I should do. And then just as suddenly he came back out of the weeds up on the pavement and fell right into line. Weeds and branches were dragging off his mufflers and saddle bags but he seemed none the worse and the group kept on riding. For the rest of the ride I could not think of anything else other than “this guy must be a fantastic rider or the luckiest man in the world, I have got to get to know him and find out how he survived that off road excursion.”
We arrived at the restaurant and as we got off our bikes I started laughing and asking this guy what the heck had happened. He was laughing too and said he was so wrapped up in the scenery he just kept going when the road curved he missed it. We had a great laugh and also thankful that he had made it unscathed and headed into lunch sitting across the table from each other. While we waited for our food someone asked him where he lived and to my surprise he lived in the same subdivision as I did in Douglasville “Charlton Crossing” So that day, thanks to an Atlanta HOG ride I met Bob Dumas and started a friendship that lasted beyond a lifetime.
After that day Bob and I would get together and ride three to five times a week, sometimes just to breakfast, sometimes just little rides to biker stores or Harley dealerships or just short trips around country roads of Douglasville. We would also take 150 to 200 plus mile road trips to nowhere, just finding new places and new people to go see. Every trip has its own story and its own memories, ones I now can ponder over, laugh about, thank God for keeping us safe and building a friendship.
Over the years on many memorable bike rides with large and small groups and sometimes just the two of us I got to know this man and learned he was one of a kind, he lived on his own terms, loved his departed wife, his family and life. He was a man of his word, he stood for what he believed in, never met a stranger, if he liked you, you knew it and if he didn’t he just sort of ignored you but didn’t make a point of telling anyone else. He was a man of principle, God loving, and living with a passion for life. He was generous, would do anything for his friends and family, and gave time and money to help people he had never met.
At 78 plus Bob started looking into three wheelers, he was having some issues with balance while stopped. This only slowed him down from riding with large groups but it didn’t slow down his passion for riding. His last post on Facebook was about thinking of buying a three wheeler and asking his contacts on any ideas they might have.
Bob’s last ride was Saturday, June 11. He and I met early that morning and headed out to our breakfast place, met with some good friends then wandered around till time to head over to HDA for an afternoon poker run. We only made it to the second stop, after that I managed to get us lost, he accused me of doing it on purpose cause by then he had two aces for his poker hand. He told me I had to pay him back all his costs. We got lost, road into a rain storm, got wet, dried out and wound up riding more than 120 miles that day, stopping to laugh and picked on each other. Then we headed home and said we would call in a few days and go riding.
Bob passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011, we laid him to rest next to his Ginny on Saturday, June 18, 2011 with his son riding his bike at the head of the Patriot Guards (American Legion Post 145, Douglasville), a large group of Atlanta HOG members, members of the Sunset Hills Baptist Church Faith Riders and other biker friends leading the hearse carrying Bob. We paid our final tribute to this great man. For me, it will be a long time before I can stop looking in my rear view mirror to make sure Bob is behind me and safe. I know he is safe in the arms of God and watching over me now, but I will be missing seeing him on his bike in my mirrors.
Just one little midweek Atlanta Chapter HOG ride and I met a friend for life and beyond.

Saddle & Paddle -- August 13-14, 2011
Well, the time has come to plan this overnighter. I had to plan it for just one night Saturday, August 13. We have a block of rooms at Fontana Village again. I was able to secure a rate of $89 plus tax of course. I am working on the paddling rates at Adventurous Fast Rivers. Please go ahead and call Fontana at 1-800-849-2258 tell them you are with "Atlanta HOG" for the rate. Then please email me at atlhogdirector@gmail.com. I look forward to this weekend as always. More information to follow.

Florida State Rally Ride -- October 19-23, 2011
As we did last year with Tennessee's state rally, I have picked Florida's State Rally to support this year. They have one of the hotels listed on their website with a $69 a night rate. I actually stopped by there a couple weeks ago to check it out and it's very nice. The rally dates are Wednesday, October 19, through Saturday, October 22. The hotel is: Summer Place Inn 1-888-232-2499. Again, if you would just let me know when you make your reservations. This hotel is approximately 3 miles from the main host, but still very nice. I plan on an early start down on Wednesday and returning on Sunday.
