Welcome to the Atlanta Chapter's Website. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta established the Atlanta Chapter on September 19, 1985. We are the oldest H.O.G. Chapter in Georgia. All of the officers hope you will take a look around and enjoy your stop here. Be sure to check out the Calendar. We try to keep a good variety of rides and events to fit into everyone's schedules. If you are a local or just passing through town and have any questions feel free to contact any of the Officers. If you are interested in joining the chapter, we have membership applications available here on the site. We are here to "Ride and Have Fun" and hope you will come out and join us soon. DIRECTOR’S ARTICLE
Is it October already? This year has flown by. This has been a year of ups and downs for me and Lori but thanks to our HOG family it has been much easier to get through. As I write this, I have just returned from Helen and the Georgia State Rally. What a Rally it was, even though the weather didn't completely cooperate I think everyone had a great time. Helen is a small town but the Rally committee made sure there was very much to do. The indoor games were a big hit with the rain we had but the weather did clear enough for some great riding. The parties on Thursday and Friday nights were great, live music and more HOGs than you could shake a stick at. Make sure you thank Rene', Erik and Bobby for putting so much time into this year's rally. After the close of the rally on Saturday night the Atlanta Chapter members gathered at the Best Western pool for OUR official close of the rally. We even had two members get hitched while at the rally, Congratulations to Mack and Debbie Hall. If you missed the rally this year you don't want to make the same mistake next year, just think the beach.
As summer winds down and cooler weather helps to make the rides more comfortable, the ride calendar for October has a little something for everyone. With a full calendar, I hope everyone will get out for some of these great rides.
As 2009 comes to a close, it's time to start thinking about next year. 2010 is going to be a huge year for the chapter. It will mark our 25th anniversary; there are lots of ideas floating around in the Officer's heads, and most of you know that's a lot of area to fill. Next year will have even more rides and events than 2009, I know it's hard to believe, but our goal is to grow and keep building on each year's excitement. October is also time to start thinking about renewing your membership. I hope all of you will renew for 2010, if you are considering not renewing, PLEASE let me know why. Every member is very important to me and if someone isn't happy with the chapter I want to know why. We have 260 plus members and come January 1, 2010, I would like to start with at least 260 members to build on. I know I can't solve everyone's problems, but if you are considering not renewing to contact me at atlhogdirector@gmail.com or call me at 770-367-1386 and I'll try to fix whatever is keeping you from renewing. As always, I am always looking for comments and suggestions to help make the chapter better for everyone. I look forward to seeing you all out at the next chapter ride or event.
Chris RobeyWow, it's already fall and by the time you read this article some of the leaves will be changing and the riding weather will be awesome. As I'm writing this article it's the week after the State Rally, and I want to heap much praise on our chapter. First and foremost our ears are exactly where they were prior to the rally and not "pinned back.” I want to congratulate everyone who contributed to the Atlanta Chapter winning the Chapter Challenge. Secondly, I really want to thank everyone who worked so hard as volunteers who helped contribute to the win. I was so proud when I looked around Saturday night after the closing ceremonies and saw many members of the Atlanta Chapter still there afterwards cleaning and several were there prior to help set up. The after party which took place at the pool of the Best Western, we took the place over and had a blast.
Now, onto some upcoming chapter business. As you know it is time for your chapter renewal, and as we start the New Year, there will be needs that will arise for some officers. As of the time of this article, we have not had our business meeting and determined who is going to step down from their current roles as officers, but I know there are some that may wish to just ride for a while and not have to plan. With that I would like to recognize some folks who have stepped up and made the officer's job so much easier. Chuck Fuller has been a godsend this year as he stepped up and organized the summer grilling. Melissa Fuller, Fashion and Valerie Daniel, along with many others have started our first Ladies of Harley group in several years, and it is going great. With Erik and me on the State Rally Committee these folks have no idea how much that has helped both of us. I would also like to recognize Melissa Fuller for planning the picnic. There are just so many people that have stepped up in our chapter to make it just such a strong group. If you're not having fun with this bunch, you're just not trying.
Enjoy riding this fall, as you will see we have a full calendar for October. Start giving some thought to what you might like to do for the chapter next year.

Should I Renew My Atlanta Chapter, HOG Membership
Well, October is here, and for me, it is the best month for riding. The throaty rumble of a v-twin piercing the cool air, brightly colored leaves kick up from the ground, swirl in front of my helmet and are swiftly carried away by the brisk wind. The chill rolling off my windshield bites my nose, serving as a reminder that my thin summertime gloves are ready for storage. Autumn is nature's reminder to all riders that winter is coming, and the riding season is winding down and that our 2010 membership dues will be coming up soon. I regret that the Georgia climate takes a plunge into the doldrums of winter, but I never regret paying for my Atlanta Chapter dues. Without the chapter, I would not have met so many fine people, and quite honestly, my Facebook friend list would be pathetic.
Since 2009 has been one of the most challenging economic years in history, we're all looking for ways to save. In my house, we've foregone many of our creature comforts we enjoyed during the "fat" years, things like health club memberships, concerts, movie going and toilet paper just to name a few. Instead we have found more frugal alternatives, such as walking, listening to old CD's, buying used movies and, stealing toilet paper from friends' houses. All of these "extras" were replaced because of their cost vs. benefit ratios.
The only items I did not consider cutting are my National and Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. memberships. Although the cost for both memberships tops out at $65 per year, I can argue this cost with the most brilliant economists in the world and be victorious every time. Here are some of the arguments I would use.
1. Cost vs. Benefit Argument – If the dues were measured on a per mile basis, and if I rode 11,000 miles in 2009, the cost would only be 5.9 cents per mile! This cost per mile ratio can also be decreased by simply RIDING MORE!
2. Opportunity Cost Argument – For those who do not know, opportunity cost is the financial implications of making a choice. For example, instead of riding with the chapter I could be working at the office. Well, since I am a salaried employee, working extra will not net me any more income, so therefore riding is a better deal! Also for those who are paid hourly, how much extra do you really make after Uncle Sam had his hand in your wallet! Sorry Mr. Economist, we work hard enough, it’s time to get out to ride and relax a little.
The final argument I would make with the economist is Tangible vs. Intangible benefit. Yes, paying dues represents a loss of money to the bottom line, in my case $65. But the intangible benefit far outweighs the cost. For that simple contribution, I am a member of a worldwide family of more than one million people. If anyone has traveled overseas, rode to Club H.O.G. at Oklahoma City or traveled to Helen for the Georgia State Rally, you spent time with this extended family. Riding, games, concerts, etc. The H.O.G. Family always greets you with a smile, not always the case with your immediate family.
The most important part of this extended family is the friends you have at the Atlanta Chapter. We come from all walks of life; we ride next to you, help you when things don't go exactly as planned and share butter rolls after a two-hundred mile ride in the rain. Think of this, this year our chapter has more than 250 members, of all these people, how many of them do you know, possibly 4%, 6%, 10% of the group? If you know 30 members, that only 12% of the chapter, which is really good, but there's another 88% who want to meet and ride with you! Think of all those members you have not shared a butter roll with.
So please consider this economic proposal for 2010: Save money elsewhere in your life and renew your H.O.G. memberships. By simply having two or three fewer restaurant meals in 2010, you can pay the 2010 Atlanta Chapter and National H.O.G. dues. Then maximize this investment by riding more than in 2009.
When it's all said and done, it's really not about the numbers; being a member of Atlanta Chapter HOG represents a choice in your life of belonging to a great organization to meet extraordinary folks and to live up to our motto of "creating lasting friendships forged in iron and steel."

LOH Wrench 101 Recap
I would like to send out a Big Thanks to everyone who joined us for the LOH Wrench 101 class. We had a great turnout and the weather couldn't have been better. Class started at 10:30 with Melissa Fuller welcoming everyone and introducing one of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta's Master Technicians, Ernie. We had a 1200 Sportster set up in the Pavilion, so we could see the parts of the bike as Ernie reviewed the T-Clocks inspection checklist. Ernie did an awesome job explaining in detail how to perform Pre-Ride inspections on our bikes. He also answered specific questions participants had about their own bikes. It was very informative. I feel we all rode away with more knowledge of our own bikes and what to look for to keep our bikes in good maintenance and keep us riding safely. After class, we went shopping at the dealership and several of us purchased our starter tool kits with a discount that the dealership gave us. Eleven of us then rode to the Bone Garden Cantina for lunch. Once again, thanks to all for a great day!
Until next time, Ride On,
Karen Mathiasen (Fashion), LOH Officer
The 2009 Riding season is well under way and I'd like to thank the members for submitting pictures of lots of great events! I would also like to remind everyone that there is a "Photographer" patch available to members submitting photos from at least three events. We have had several members qualify for the patch this year and would like to give out several more; so get out those cameras and send me the photos! Please send them to atlhogphoto@gmail.com

Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a UserId and password to access these pages. I will print the UserId and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@bellsouth.net. Thanks!!

"Mission Accomplished": RIDE and HAVE FUN!
This year’s Chillin' & Grillin' project worked out GREAT! A big thanks goes out to: Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and their employees who provided the food, setup, and clean up, the 39 Atlanta Chapter volunteers who donated their valuable weekend riding time, and of course the hundreds of bikers who had lunch and shared stories with us.
We were able to collect around $1000 in tips in our 15 Saturday events between 4/25 and 8/22! In addition to the tip money, the events also produced lots of fun days with such things as a "Live Pink Pig,” a competitive "Top Gas" drag bike & rider display, cotton candy machine, lots of good music, and 2010 Miss HD of Atlanta even stopped in to flip a burger or two! We recruited some new members and made new friends as we "smoked" up the grill through the summer. Look for Grillin' pictures in PhotoBucket on our website.
Chuck Fuller, Volunteer Coordinator
Pig Ride LegendThanks to Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter
We joined the Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter in the Spring of 2006 and were interested in making new Harley friends and catching up with some of our old friends. We have achieved that and so much more! More than we ever imagined.
Not only did we gain new friends, we gained a new family, our Atlanta H.O.G. Family. We have been there together for the events, rides and good times, but you have also been there for us in our "not so good" times. Tandy and I want to thank our Atlanta H.O.G. Family for all you have done this past year for us with flowers, visits at the hospital, sending cards, phone calls, and even making sure that I do not overdo when participating in chapter events. We also want to thank you for your support and participation in the Boobapalooza and the Bikers for Boobs Poker Run. As Tandy and I continue our fight, we want you to know how much we appreciate you and all you have done on our behalf. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month...please encourage your loved ones to be current with their exams. Again, thank you for your prayers and support.
God Bless You,
Beth and Tandy Barrett, Chapter Members
Week Day Ride -- September 22, 2009
Let's have a Screw Tuesday and go for a ride. As long as the weather is clear, the roads are ours. Weekdays are great for less traffic. Our options are wide open! Back roads to our destination and the glow that we are having fun while others are working for the money. Heck call in sick. I’ll get a Doctors' excuse! September 22, 2009
Diana Bodden, Road Captain
Annual Fall Leaf Ride October 9 – 11, 2009
We will leave H-D Atlanta Pavilion at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning, and with some old friends from Great South Chapter, it's northbound to the Appalachian Mountains, embarking on a scenic ride of your life.
This experience includes actually smelling and feeling the mountain air, free of charge!
Imagine the possibilities as we ply our way to Black Mountain on day one, enjoying the fall colors in north GA and North Carolina over a 3-day ride through some of the most beautiful mountains in the country, mountains, valleys, forests, glades, wild streams, lakes and peaceful ponds. Perhaps you'll spot a hawk, eagle, bear or deer. Have you ever traveled the lesser known Wayah Road? We'll do a late lunch at the River's Edge in the Nantahala Gorge.
We'll explore the wonders of the Blue Ridge Parkway on day two, Linville Viaduct, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, the old parkway and the new. Lunch will probably be in Blowing Rock. Time permitting, we can even dip into the Linville Gorge (North Carolina's Grand Canyon).
The third day finds us snaking our path through Chimney Rock and Lake Lure before traversing the Foothills Parkway and homeward bound.
I have 12 rooms blocked at the Super 8 Motel in Black Mountain, NC. They are all standard non-smoking with 2 double beds. First come first accommodated.
I was able to acquire the rooms at last year's price, a reduced rate of $64.95 plus tax/night. That is $143.86 plus tax/night/room for two nights. Rooms allow up to 5 occupants each. All are co-located on ‘our balcony'. To reserve a room, you call the motel at (828) 669-8076, and state that you want to take a room that is listed under Andy Andresen. Place the room in your name and credit card.
The deadline for reserving a room is Sept 8th, when I will cancel all blocked rooms that are not reserved by our group. The room rates will then be back to the abnormal blackout rate for the fall leaf rush in the area - $129.00 plus tax. And a lot higher in other motels.
Soon, it may be impossible to find a room anywhere within 50 miles of Asheville, due to the windshield tourists (like us) flocking into the area for the fall leaf colors.
This is a 4-pig ride due to the saddle time, distance, twisties, and weather.
(There's always weather in them thar mountains.) Email me at Director@GreatSouthHOG.com.
Andy Andresen, Road Captain
Columbus Day Ride – October 12, 2009
Join me at 8:00 A.M. on Columbus Day, October 12th at the Quik Trip at Hwy. 61 & 278 in Dallas (address: 491 Nathan Dean Blvd., Dallas, GA). We will have kickstands up at 8:30 A.M. and ride up to "Doug's Place" in Emerson to have some breakfast. From there we will take a two hour or so ride up to Helen, GA. I think by then I will want another one of those “Big Daddy's" huge hamburgers. We will have lunch up in Helen where the official ride will end, but anyone who would like will be welcome to take a scenic ride back toward the Hiram area with me. I anticipate it being an all day ride. I want to take full advantage of my day off. Please come out and join me. Helen will be having "Octoberfest" so there should be a lot going on in town.
Bobby Conway, Road Captain
Highland Games Ride - October 17, 2009
Join us for the first ever "Kilted" ride to the Stone Mountain Highland Games. Ever wondered what a Scotsman wears under his kilt? Ever seen a telephone pole tossed end over end by a man in a skirt? Join us to discover the answer to this and many other questions on Saturday, October 17, 2009. For 37 years, the picturesque grounds of the Stone Mountain Park meadow have resounded with the sounds of bagpipes, fiddles and harps during the third weekend in October. This year once again, thousands of Scots (even those that wishes to be 'Scot for the Day') from around the world will don their family tartans and gather to greet old friends and make new ones too. Remember, real men wear kilts so wear yours if you have one and join us for a fun filled day of Highland Athletics, Music, Food and Unique Vendors.
We will meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 9:00 a.m., kick stands up at 9:30 a.m. Admission to the games is $15 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-10. Parking is $10 per vehicle. This will be a 4-pig ride.
Melissa Folds, Ride Leader
Apple Festival Ride – October 18, 2009
Join me for our annual ride to the Apple Festival. I have some new roads there and a new final location, with access to the festival or the apple houses. There will be some great N. GA scenery and great food. Come and join us on this great annual event. I plan to miss the traffic this year and end up at a location to eat. Come out and have some fun!
Diana Bodden, Road Captain
6th Annual Signal Mountain Ride – November 7 – 8, 2009
Join me for the 6th Annual Signal Mountain Ride .Yes, for six years you have made this one of the chapter's most desirable and memorable rides. If you haven't ridden this one, now's your chance!
We will ride John's Mountain to the foothills of Lookout Mountain. Head up Raccoon Mountain and stop at the TVA Pump Station Reservoir. Travel a one lane road across the top of the reservoir for a spectacular view across many miles of canyon.
Then ride across the valley, onto Hwy. 27 toward Suck Creek and challenge our riding skills up and down the western face of Signal Mountain. Warm our souls in sunshine along the TN River until we reach the southern tip of Signal Mountain to embrace our tanks for yet another twisty experience. We will pass the Space Ship house, travel along the main Hwy. 127 and down the eastern slope of Signal Mountain. Stop in Whitwell for some fuel and share our colorful stories. From here, we head north on Hwy. 108 to Gruetli-Laager to be greeted by our last set of twisties on Hwy. 50 through Pelham and Hwy. 41 S into Monteagle.
As always, we will spend the night in Monteagle, TN at the Best Western Smokehouse Lodge. Details to follow.
The next morning, we will head to Suwannee University for breakfast and a stop at the Peace Memorial to pray for our fallen and active military.
Our return route will be different from last year. Generally speaking we head through TN, AL and into Dallas, GA.
Due to the length and nature of this ride, it is a 4.5 PIG. However, I encourage the less experienced to join us and challenge your skills. After all, this is the only way to improve!
WHEN: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2009
MEET: HDA 9:00 A.M.; Kickstands Up at 9:30 A.M. SHARP!
RETURN: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009 in time for dinner.
I look forward to seeing all of you and celebrating my Birthday!
