1990 Brain Tumor Ride fo Kids
We did it again! The Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. was the club that contributed the most money to
the Brain Tumor Foundation this year. We raised more than $17,000! Lloyd and Anne-Marie
were set up in the staging area at Perimeter Mall when we got there and things went like
clockwork. I signed in 130 Atlanta Chapter members and I know I missed some. It was an
excellent turnout. The ride left Perimeter Mall on time and wound its way down Peachtree,
through downtown and ended up at Lakewood Amphitheater. Later on television I saw a good
shot Kevin Trask riding along wearing his coyote hat and I'm sure I saw Herman Ridley.
Conditions were a lot better than in the past when the ride ended in Helen, GA. It was hot, sunny
day but there were plenty of covered seating and good entertainment. The food lines took quite a
while in the hot sun and left a little to be desired. I found myself wondering how much of that
barbecue and cold beer Lloyd and Anne-Marie could have sold if they had set up here. Comedian
Jay Leno was there and I understand that he is now a member of the Atlanta Chapter. The new
Atlanta Falcon coach, Jerry Glanville, was there as was our own chapter member, Johnny
Beckman, leading the pack. There were more than 1,800 motorcycles in the ride this year and a
grand total of more than $213,000 was raised for Brain tumor foundation. We're proud to claim
Johnny as one of out own, but I'll bet he's just as proud of the Atlanta Chapter, I sure am. Thank
you, Atlanta Chapter members for all the work and money you contributed over this pas year to
this worthy cause. We did good.
Fund Raiser of the Year
A special thanks to Dell and Monty Pearson, the Fund Raiser of the Year. Dell and Monty raised
$2445. Tickets for a special drawing for a "Willie G." were given to our member for each $50
raised. The drawing for the jacket, donated by Eddie Houghton and Harley-Davidson of Atlanta,
followed the July chapter meeting. The lucky winner was Anne-Marie Southwick.
Congratulations, Anne-Marie, I'll tell you really deserve it for all the work you've done this past
year. Thanks, Eddie, we couldn't have done it without your enthusiastic support.
TV Star Joins the Atlanta Chapter
TV comedian and stand in for Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, is now some dues paying member of the
Atlanta Chapter. We owe this distinction to our other TV star, Johnny Beckman, who enlisted
Jay to help promote the Ride for Kids this year. Now that we all belong to the same chapter, I
wonder if he'll ever invite some of us to be on the Johnny Carson Show. Talking about an
appearance on TV, be sure to watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Labor Day. B.K. Ellis, Dick
Gehring and Glenda Ridley will present the Atlanta Chapter check to MDA. We are scheduled to
appear at 2:20 P.M..
Chapter Member's Viewpoint
The new officers have been elected and for the first time since the beginning of the chapter it's a brand-new team. I remember on of the very first rides of the Atlanta Chapter to Pine Mountain. When we stopped at a rest area there were three or four separate groups and several riders walking around alone. Now when we stop everyone seems to mingle together. Times have
changed. I remember, in those early days of the chapter, a rider doing some top end work on his
engine during a stop and then be ready to ride when the group left. Now it's rare to see any thing
but the Evolution engine and no one performing maintenance on their bike during a ride. Times
have changed for the better, I guess. The first few years, with a few exceptions, B.K. mapped
every ride, led every ride and organized every event. It was wonderful to sit back and enjoy the
ride under his capable leadership and not have to deal with any responsibility, just the enjoyment
of the sport. There weren't any rallies, on Daytona and Sturgis but we had great times enjoying
our local activities with the chapter, as we do now. B.K. has laid a foundation for what has been
called the largest and best organized local H.O.G. Chapter by the Harley-Davidson Motor
Company corporate officers.
Perhaps the Atlanta Chapter's greatest moments came on June 11, 1989 when, led by Lloyd
Southwick, we were recognized for out fund raising efforts at the Johnny Beckman Ride for
Kids. When I saw Johnny on state reading the list of donors and he came to the Atlanta Chapter's
contribution, looked at the crowd, turned to his companion and whispered, "Is this correct?", then
announced $22,000. That moment will live forever with the Atlanta Chapter members who were
present. Lloyd's leadership to accomplish this will never be matched. This event helped launch
the "Beckman Ride" as one of the major motorcycle charity rides in the country.
In 1988 one of our members saw how difficult it had become for B.K. to handle all of the
responsibility for the Atlanta Chapter. She began to organize the weekend rides and events and in
January 1989 and 1990 an entire year of scheduled events was passed out at the meeting. An
amazing feat when you consider that most of the other local chapters had barely a newsletter
showing the next weekend event planned. A result of Glenda Ridley's efforts was the
participation of other members in mapping out rides, leading rides and suggesting event which
this chapter has never seen before. As with all organizations, its life depends on the participation of its members. Some of the people who have come and gone and some who still remain say "The Atlanta Chapter is not what it use to be" and they are right! I have seen it grow from infancy and it is stronger, smarter and more alive than it has ever been. It's such a pleasure to be a member.

WEB MASTER'S ARTICLE
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a UserId and password to access these pages. I will print the UserId and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@bellsouth.net. Thanks!!

ROAD TRIP
ROAD TRIP RECAP
October 14, Ride Recap
Thanks to Mark Brady, Joseph Tesar, Lori and Chris Robey for coming out and joining me on a
weekday lunch ride. After a good lunch, we headed south to Roopville, turn left on Highway 5
through Whitesburg, to Douglasville, and then returned to the dealership.
One small mishap occurred. Can you imagine how embarrassing it is to be the lead rider and
have your muffler heat shield fall off, and the rider behind you run over it? Well it happened to
me. Can you believe something like this happening on an American-built Harley-Davidson—it
does?
Jim Byrd, Safety Officer
5th Annual Signal Mtn. Ride RECAP
We met at HDA and added some riders at the CrossRoads for a chilly morning with expectations
of sunshine. We were not disappointed! As we made our way briskly northward across John's
Mtn. to the foothills of Lookout Mountain, we were able to stop and shed a layer or two at
Cooper Heights. Then across the mountain and onto Trenton, GA for a hearty lunch at Randy's
Buffett. Mmm good! Now for dessert..... twisties!
We headed up Raccoon Mtn. with smiles on our faces. After some beautiful color along the
mountain twisties, we stopped at the TVA Pump Station Reservoir. We were greeted by golden,
tree-capped, well-paved roads; followed by a view of the TN River with a backdrop of Signal
Mtn. Further along, we traveled a one lane road across the top of the reservoir for a spectacular
view across many miles of canyon. We dismounted to enjoy the Gift.
Then we headed across the valley and onto Hwy. 27 toward Suck Creek. We were enclosed by
autumn color as we challenged our riding skills up and down the western face of Signal
Mtn....breathtaking! This may have been the highlight of the ride. As we exited from the Leaf
Blanket, we warmed our souls in sunshine along the TN River. As we reached the southern tip of
Signal Mtn., we embraced our tanks for yet another twisty experience. Past the Space Ship house,
along the main Hwy. 127 and down the northern tier of Signal Mtn., finding ourselves back in
the valley watching hot-air balloon folks get ready for their dose of Fall Color. We stopped in
Whitwell for some fuel and to share our colorful stories. From here, we head north on Hwy. 108
to Gruetli-Laager only to be greeted by our last set of twisties on Hwy. 50 through Pelham and
Hwy. 41S into Monteagle. What a great ending to a day of 280 miles with experienced riders.
After removing some road dust from ourselves, we gathered to socialize and have some dinner
together. We joked and laughed until our eyelids became heavy. Now, we realized we were on
Central time AND the clocks were to be turned back.... so we gained some well deserved sleep!
We regrouped in the morning for a ride to Sewanee, TN and the University of the South. Once
again, we said our thanks at the Peace Memorial. This year we went to the University for a
spectacular and healthy breakfast...$6/person...All- u-can-eat.....From here we went through
Sherwood for twisties along Hwy. 156, into Stevenson, up Lookout Mtn. at Mentone and Valley
Head, then into Menlo, GA. We continued on to Cave Springs and stopped for some refreshing
spring water. Afterwards, Noel announced it was time to eat--again. So he led us to his new
favorite spot in Rockmart, GA --the Impala Diner. WOW.... a 60's car buff's dream. We ate along
side the Blues Brothers and a mint '61 Impala Convertible. Treat yourself to a Father's day meal
at this place. Be careful, its only opened Thursday through Sunday, and Sunday is 11am-3pm.
This brought us to about 180 miles for the day with welcomed solace to head home.
I thank the 15 riders and their passengers for making yet another memorable and safe Signal Mtn. Ride. The friendships we have built these past five years are most valuable. For those of you
yearning to go, watch for the 6th Annual Signal Mtn. Ride.....Nov. 7, 2009. I have already begun
plans for this one with more new roads. As past participants will tell you, there are always new
roads and surprises when you Ride.... The Mountain!
Happy Holidays to ALL!
