MEMBER BENEFIT CHANGE
NEW RIDER'S REWARDS PROGRAM
General Manager Harley-Davidson of Atlanta
I want to take a moment to let you all know that in 2006 Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is launching a Rider's Rewards Program. This program is designed to reward those customers who are most deserving. Consequently, customers who do more business with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will reap more benefits as a result of the program.
In the past, many have only joined the Atlanta Chapter merely to receive a discount anytime and every time they made a purchase at the dealership. To many, the Chapter is known only as a discount club. This has removed the true purpose and meaning behind what H.O.G. chapters are really about. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the National Chapter both discourage dealers from having an across the board discount for H.O.G. members for this very reason. In keeping with the factory and National Chapters recommendations, we are amending our store’s discount and rewards programs.
The Rider's Rewards Program will be available to our entire customer base, including our Chapter members. The Rider Rewards Program will be included FREE OF CHARGE as a part of active chapter membership. For non-chapter members there will be a cost to be a member of the Rider Rewards Program. Non-chapter members will have to acquire their Loyalty card for $9.95 annually or $39.95 for a lifetime membership.
The program is a way for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customers to earn credit toward future purchases. Each time you make a purchase in MotorClothes, Parts and Accessories and the Service department you will earn a percentage back of every dollar spent. Moreover, points will be earned on qualifying merchandise only. Chapter members will also receive points for their participation in Chapter or dealership sanctioned events and functions (e.g., chapter meetings, chapter rides, socials, volunteer time, etc.).
The Rider's Rewards Program will begin in January 2006. We are looking forward to implementing this new program. We are confident you will find this Rider's Reward program to be rewarding to you.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Thoughts from Tom
It doesn't seem it should be
so hard to write an article about something that you love to do. I mean some
people tend to throw the word "love" around and use it to describe just about
everything they talk about. But I really do love to ride my bike. I like to
think about places to which I've ridden and trips I want to take, to recall
special moments on a trip. Like when I rode to Sturgis for the first time, or
my first bike rally in Daytona or Thunder Beach in P.C., or the time when Terri
and I decided we would go ride the Tail of the Dragon for her first time. We
went when we figured it wouldn’t be crowded with the rockets. It was February
with temperatures in the 20's, snow on the ground and everything. I wish I had
been keeping a journal of all those trips. So now I daydream about where I want
to go. I want to ride the Pacific Coast Highway, go back to the Grand Canyon,
the Flaming Gorge and Yellowstone. I still want to ride across Canada and
Alaska. There are so many places to go and see. Ride from point "A" to point
"B". Get to the destination and enjoy it. Take a nice leisurely ride somewhere
on the back roads and let the memories develop.
This all sounds so good but
there is a down side to all this enjoyment that we seek. In my line of work I
see the worst of things so many times. Here lately it seems that what has been
in the forefront of my attention regarding motorcycles is the number of
accidents that have been occurring. It seems as though I hear dispatches of
accidents with serious injuries or fatalities involving motorcycles on a daily
basis. And it's not just the crotch rockets that are involved in these wrecks.
A couple of weeks ago officers from my precinct responded to two motorcycle
accidents within one hour. Both bikes were cruisers. In one case it was the car
driver's fault. In the other the motorcyclist was at fault.
May is Motorcycle Safety
Awareness Month. The DOT message boards over the interstate will carry a
motorcycle awareness message on some days. I could provide all kinds of data
collected and numbers and such but the numbers really don't mean a whole lot.
What matters? There are more motorcyclists every day. There are more accidents
involving motorcyclists. So it stands to reason there are more serious injuries
and fatalities EVERY DAY.
What can you do? Most people
who ride a bike also drive a car. Have you ever started to pull out and at the
last minute saw a motorcycle approaching that you missed on first glance. Be
more careful. When you're riding your bike pay attention Focus on the other
vehicles and the drivers. Anticipate what the driver might do and what you are
going to do in response to their actions. Make sure you have a motorcycle
endorsement on your driver's license. You wouldn’t believe the number of
accidents police go to and find that the operator of the motorcycle does not
have the "M" endorsement. Take a motorcycle safety-training course and continue
to practice once the class is over. You can never learn too much. Know your
limitations and those of your bike.
It's this simple. If you ride
long enough you are going to have a close call or be involved in an accident. I
think that part is inevitable. But there are things you can do to minimize the
effects or reduce your risk. Give it some thought.
You see I want you all to be
safe out there on the streets. I want you to take those trips you've dreamed
about. I want you to have those memories and special moments to recall. So, as
I always say:

So You're Not Happy About
the Location of the State Rally
State Rallies are one of the most popular benefits of H.O.G. membership. They
are fun, non-profit gatherings-a place for members from all over the state to
get together to participate in field events, bike shows and group rides, or to
just kick back and talk about Harleys with others who love them as much as they
do!
State Rallies are corporate
events and each rally exists as an individual Corporation. They are initiated
via a proposal process that is presented at the Annual State Rally Planning
meeting held by the H.O.G. Regional Manager in each state. Sponsoring dealers
and representatives from each chapter in the state are invited to come and
evaluate the State Rally proposals presented at the planning meeting. Any
current National H.O.G. member may present a proposal. Your Regional Manager
will send a letter detailing the time and location. If you want to be
considered for a position on the rally committee, propose an idea for the State
Rally, or is you chapter wants a vote on the presented proposal, you must
attend this meeting.
The Election Process
After the rally proposals
have be presented, it will be time to vote. Votes will take place for the
rally date and site, and then for the Rally Coordinator and members of the
rally committee. Each H.O.G. chapter and each sponsoring Harley-Davidson dealer
principal gets one vote each for the item being decided. (All votes are
subject to Regional Manager approval.)
The rally committee may be
made up of any active National H.O.G. members. The rally is not sponsored by,
or produced by any individual chapter or dealership, regardless of the rally's
location.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
A Word from Chris
April's Road Captain of
the month is Erik Grandowski. The new
Road Captains are burning up the calendar.
A few weeks ago Rene, Diana
and I packed some bags and headed over to Birmingham, AL for the National
H.O.G.'s Primary Officer Training. It was a great experience for me and now I
understand why all the Officers I have talked to after the training were so
motivated. There were chapter officers from all over, South Florida to Illinois
and all the way out to Texas. There was an array of classes from motivating
people to basic management classes. I found while talking with the other
chapter officers the one thing we all had in common was participation, or lack
thereof, and how to build it. Most said that their membership numbers were good
but getting the members to come out to the rides and events was always tough.
Of course I was happy to hear our turn out for rides is better than a lot of
the other chapters. Most of them have better turn out for the meetings and
events.
As always being the curios
person I am, I would like to know why all of our members don’t participate
more. We have the "regular group" that we see at most of the events. There is
the "from time to time group" that we see here and there. What about you? Into
which group do you fit? Why don't we see you more? Is it because of your busy
schedule? Is it because the chapter doesn't offer anything that interests you?
Would a weekday ride or weekly dinner ride bring you out more? This is your
chapter, what would YOU like to see? Contact any of the officers or road
captains by e-mail, phone, at business or chapter meetings, on a ride or at any
other event.
If you have signed in on any
of the rides this year there was a place to put your e-mail address. In the
following days after the ride you should have received an e-mail from the Road
Captain of the ride (if you didn't please let me know). This e-mail is the
perfect opportunity for you to give your comments, opinions or suggestions. It
doesn’t have to be about the ride you attended, just reply to the message and
the Road Captain will get your comment to me or another officer. The Chapter is
also looking for a few members that are retired or have days off through the
week to lead some lunch or dinner rides during the week. I would like to give
every member every opportunity to get out and ride with the chapter.
Don’t forget to check out my
picture site http://new.photos.yahoo.com/ridepics/.
Ricky and Patty Matthews. I think I finally have most of my pictures uploaded
from the past few years. I hope everyone is out enjoying the great weather. I
will see you on the next ride.
See you on the next Ride,
Chris Robey

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Safety Corner
Ride Smart. Most rides start out fairly similar, good in fact. It can then get dicey for the unprepared. You have to utilize the right tools for the task. Allow me to ramble a bit.
Skill. Have you been riding long? Did you complete a motorcycle safety course? Do you practice simple maneuvers like "riding in the zone"? Learn the survival skills! You periodically get the bike tuned up. Why not give yourself a tune-up?
Sober. When was the last time you sipped an adult beverage? Alcohol induced accidents produce devastating results. And still the percentage of alcohol related accidents are high (40%). Impairment begins with the FIRST drink. Most riders' abilities are significantly reduced with very little alcohol. I once saw a logo I liked: "Open the throttle, not the bottle".
Situational Awareness. Are you on the scoot or somewhere else? Is your mind wandering around in the halls of school, work, problems, or worse – a complete void? The name of the game is SURVIVAL. Stay focused. Stay alert. Stay alive!
Food. Did you just gorge a huge meal? Prepare to go to sleep, and fall down.
Rest. Any ride should begin only if you are well rested and in good physical condition. Remember this old axiom: "Its better to take a cat nap than a dirt nap!"
Hydrate. It fights the fatigue problem on an extended ride.
Be Seen. Be a beacon in the day or night. Reflective or brightly colored clothing, lights, and positioning will help to impede that horrible "bump" from an inattentive cage driver.
The road will woo you today. What evil lurks to blight?
Keep the shiny side up -- ride safely,

Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a UserId and password to access these pages. I will print the UserId and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!

POTPOURRI
FACTOID: The number of
motorcycle registrations and rider licensing has increased around 40% in the
past 10 years. The number of motorcycle crashes resulting in injury or death
has increased 105%.
When I attended the
Governor's Office of Highway Safety/Georgia Motorcycle Riders Alliance
Conference this month, I found them to be sincere in the states efforts to make
Motorcycle Awareness in the state of Georgia a top priority. The program is
unusual since it involves a state asking for the "customers"; to be
part of the solution to the growing number of rider accidents and fatalities.
The following event is just
one of the many ways they will be attempting to do this. But, it will
only happen with the input and support of riders in GA.
I have forwarded the following letter in case someone is
interested in participating/representing Atlanta Chapter HOG in this event or
making it your own project for now or in the future. This can be accomplished
either as an individual or as a group.

Motorcycle Awareness and You
(May) Campaign
For our Motorcycle Awareness and You (May) campaign this
year we plan on adding windshield-washing events at various interstate rest
areas during the next couple of months. In addition to windshield washing, we
will be handing out brochures and other literature promoting "looking for
motorcycles" as well as motorcycle safety. The first windshield-washing event
will take place on Saturday, May 26. We are hoping to get volunteers from the
Georgia Motorcycle Rider's Alliance (GMRA), and other clubs and organizations
to assist with this effort. If you or your organization will be willing to help
with this event send me an email by May 8 so we can plan to cover as many rest
areas as possible.
To continue our awareness and
communication efforts we are putting together a calendar of motorcycle events
within Georgia. If you have local events and rides please send me the
information so I can add the dates and locations.
Thanks,
Tommy Merritt

Pig Ride Legend
One pig - steady cruising rides of relatively short distance, easy on the throttle, few curves, etc.
Two pigs - a bit longer or have some curves but nothing too challenging.
Three pigs - the ride should be of moderate difficulty.
Four and five pigs - rides with a high number of curves, long distance, saddle time, road conditions, speed, and weather.
MEMBER COMMENT
ROAD TRIP
Southern Highroads Trail is August 10-12
After a one year hiatus, I am
pleased to again offer this three day, two night ride through the mountains of
north Georgia and western North Carolina. Come enjoy scenic waterfalls, tons
of curves, and weather cooler than anywhere in GA this time of year!
Day 1: Our ride will take us
through north GA along US 76 to US 64 through western NC before we stop for the
night in Franklin, NC.
Day 2: This day will feature
some really nice waterfalls along US 64 as we go through Cashiers and
Highlands, NC before we pick up US 276 in Brevard. US 276 with it's scenic
twisties leads us up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We'll then take the gentle
sweeping turns of the BRP to Dillsboro, NC and stop there for our second night.
Day 3: Today's return to
Atlanta will also be a long day, but the riding is no less spectacular than the
first two adventures. We will head toward home via the Cherohala Skyway. This
runs through NC to eastern TN. We’ll then continue on TN 68 which is another
great road for good curves, and takes us south into north GA.
This is a 5-pig
ride due to its length and the number of curves. It is NOT a good ride
for beginners or those just learning to do serious curves. It is a long ride
and you will get home around 7:00 P.M. or so on Sunday. It will be worth it.
After all, even a bad day riding is better than a good day at work. I hope you
will plan to ride the entire way. You will be pleasantly tired Monday at the
office, but you will also be smiling a lot as you relive the ride, the curves
you conquered, and the friends you made.
Bring both cold weather gear
and your rain suits. Past ride experience has shown you will need both. At
one point we will cross 5800 to 6000 feet elevations on the BRP and it is chilly
even in August! Rain is always a threat.
Cancellation of any riding
will be dictated by safety concerns. Rain produces lots of fog on the BRP and
also the Cherohala Skyway. We have encountered this on previous rides, and had
to cancel a day here and there.
Hotel Information:
Friday Night, August 10: Hampton Inn, Franklin. NC. Rooms are under
Atlanta Chapter H.O.G., confirmation # 81388097. Room rate is $79.00 plus
tax; all rooms have two double beds and are non smoking rooms. Telephone
number is (828) 369-0600
Saturday Night, August
11: Best Western River Escape,
Dillsboro, NC. Rooms are under Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. There is no
group confirmation number. The riverside room rate is $125.00, plus tax, and
offers a balcony from which to enjoy the Tuckaseegee River. These rooms are
either two queens, or a king mini-suite. There are 13 of these available.
Non-riverside rooms are $115.00 and have either two queens or a queen suite,
and 12 of these are available.
Other hotel amenities include
an indoor pool, hot tub, and fitness center.
Please contact me if
you would be willing to be a middle road captain or sweep for this ride. In the past it usually takes about five to six of us
altogether. Road captains still "in training" at this point are fine as well.
You can contact me either by cell phone (706) 455-8721 or by email at dynabear@tds.net. Thanks for volunteering and
helping out.

Ride to Helen, GA
Join me for fun twisties
through the North Georgia mountains and a flavor of little Bavaria on Saturday,
June 9 as we head to Helen, GA for the day.
Our route will take us over
GA 136 and 9 into Dahlonega where we will pick a combination of GA routes 60,
180, and 75, all of which will be sure to please the most demanding curve
aficionados anywhere. Depending on the June heat the ride will perhaps offer a
bit of relief as the mountains run 6-8 degrees cooler than the "flat land,"
a.k.a. metro Atlanta.
We will try to arrive around
1:30 p.m. for lunch so hopefully most of the crowds will have eaten by then.
There is no set destination for lunch and recommendations would include The
International Café on the river, Paul's, also on the river, and of course the
ever popular Hans' up town where most of the bikes seem to be. Our arrival in
Helen is the official end point for the chapter ride and you will be free to
return on your own.
I would rate this ride as a
four to five-pig scoot not particularly long, but full of curves, some of which
are very tight also called "decreasing radius" turns.
WHAT: Ride to Helen, GA
WHEN: Saturday, June 9 10:00 A.M.

Father's Day Ride
On June 17, I will be leading
the 3rd Annual Father’s Day lunch ride. Meet at the pavilion at HDA. Be there
at 10:00 a.m. and we will leave at 10:30 a.m. I am planning to go to the
Frontier House in Rockmart again this year. They have handled it well the past
two years. We should arrive around noon. So you should be able to make it home
in time for any afternoon family plans. Start Father’s Day the way you would
want to start every day with a ride on your Harley and with your extended
family.

Play Ball! - And Ride
Harleys!
Join me on Sunday, June 24
for a Rome Braves baseball game. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 p.m.
We will meet at the HDA pavilion at 11:00 a.m. with kickstands up at 11:30 a.m.
This will give us plenty of time on this 2-pig ride to cruise through
Cartersville and head west on Rt. 293 leading into Rome. The admission price
for the game is cheap ($4 to $8) compared to that big Atlanta team with the
same name. So warm up your vocal chords for the 7th Inning Stretch
"Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Southern Covered Bridges Ride Recap
The weather was threatening
and there were tornado watches in the adjoining state, but a few brave souls
rode to the Big Red Oak Creek and Auchumpkee covered bridges before stopping at
Smitty's for catfish - oh, and one order of hot wings with jalapenos. All had a
good time and no one even complained about the back streets tour of Talbotton
Just think, visit only eight
more covered bridges and the coveted Covered Bridges of Georgia patch is
yours.
Charles Slomka, Road Captain
NC State H.O.G. Rally Recap
The North Carolina State
H.O.G. rally, which was held in conjunction with Outer Banks Bike Week, was fun
and the weather was generally very good.
We arrived Thurs. evening
after two days of riding. Our weather for the ride over was warm and sunny
although leather jackets were comfortable most of the time. Not too soon after
our arrival in Nags Head however, the fog/clouds rolled in off the ocean and
most of us were very chilly. Following an early dinner, the weary group hit
the sack---I guess we were the party poopers that night.
Friday's weather was really
nice for the guided ride down the Outer Banks chain to Ocracoke Island. This
was about a 75-mile ride each way with a 40-minute ferry ride thrown in to
boot. It gave us a chance to see three of the four lighthouses and just enjoy
riding along the ocean. Saturday was ok for riding but not nearly as hospitable
and some chanced to don the rain gear. The beach is like the mountains in that
the weather can change in a matter of a few minutes.
Saturday morning we went to
the Wright Brothers Memorial. The memorial sits atop the hill from which the
Wright Brothers took flight. From the memorial site we watched the Parade of
Chapter Flags before having to scoot for lower ground. A nasty cloud moved
quickly over us bringing the possibility of lightning.
Our return ride found us
traveling in equally good weather, but the group split off midday on Sunday
with all but Tommye and myself headed on a more southerly route.
The rally was attended by
about 2500 registered members and countless others who were there for Bike
Week. Things were very well spread out and there were virtually no crowds to
contend with save for the rally site and Kitty Hawk HD, which hosted a couple
of bands and a bikini contest or two.
