MEMBER BENEFIT CHANGE
NEW RIDER'S REWARDS PROGRAM
Ronnie Godwin, General Manager Harley-Davidson of Atlanta
I want to take a moment to let you all know that in 2006 Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is launching a Rider's Rewards Program. This program is designed to reward those customers who are most deserving. Consequently, customers who do more business with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will reap more benefits as a result of the program.
In the past, many have only joined the Atlanta Chapter merely to receive a discount anytime and every time they made a purchase at the dealership. To many, the Chapter is known only as a discount club. This has removed the true purpose and meaning behind what H.O.G. chapters are really about. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the National Chapter both discourage
dealers from having an across the board discount for H.O.G. members for this very reason. In keeping with the factory and National Chapters recommendations, we are amending our store’s discount and rewards programs.
The Rider's Rewards Program will be available to our entire customer base, including our Chapter members. The Rider Rewards Program will be included FREE OF CHARGE as a part of active chapter membership. For non-chapter members there will be a cost to be a member of the Rider Rewards Program. Non-chapter members will have to acquire their Loyalty card for $9.95 annually or $39.95 for a lifetime membership.
The program is a way for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customers to earn credit toward future purchases. Each time you make a purchase in MotorClothes, Parts and Accessories and the Service department you will earn a percentage back of every dollar spent. Moreover, points will be earned on qualifying merchandise only. Chapter members will also receive points for their participation in Chapter or dealership sanctioned events and functions (e.g., chapter meetings,
chapter rides, socials, volunteer time, etc.).
The Rider's Rewards Program will begin in January 2006. We are looking forward to implementing this new program. We are confident you will find this Rider's Reward program to be rewarding to you.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Thoughts from Tom
I'M EXCITED! You want to know why! Because I am feeling rejuvenated about the future of this
Chapter. There is a new sense of enthusiasm. This feeling is the result of the works and efforts of
several people who continue to give to the Chapter. I want to take this opportunity to bring to
your attention the efforts of these people.
Last year Chris Robey assumed awesome responsibility as the Head Road Captain. He worked
tirelessly organizing rides, recruiting, encouraging and training Road Captains. He regularly
solicited input from the members and he was always there for you. Diana Bodden sort of
unofficially became Chris's assistant. Hardly a month went by that you didn't read about some
ride or activity that Diana was involved in. She seemed to always be available to handle a ride if
another Road Captain had to cancel. Diana participated in more events than anyone in the
Chapter.
Then there is Andy Andresen! Andy was and is always around and I mean always. Many times I
go by the dealership and there is Andy either sitting in Rene's office or talking to someone. A
Chapter Ride, business meetings, Chapter meetings, it doesn't matter what the event you can
always count on Andy to be there. And when he's not at a Chapter event he is doing some kind of
work to benefit the Chapter. He’s researching the various wrecker services to see who has the
capabilities of towing a Harley safely should we experience a breakdown. Not only does he have
info on various tow services around metro Atlanta, he also has info for companies along some of
our more popular ride routes. Andy continually strives to make this Chapter better.
Terri Varnum is and has been a dependable contributor. Terri has served for the past several
years as a Road Captain, Activities Officer, Assistant Director. This past year she put together
our PowerPoint presentation for the monthly gatherings, in addition to leading rides and
volunteering at many Chapter events.
And how about Scott and Corolla Vandiver. Yes Scott is the Assistant Director. He leads rides,
manages the meetings during my absence. He can always be relied upon to attend many rides in
addition to the ones he leads. And with Scott we get the added benefit of his wife Corolla and her
camera. She is around recording our Chapter's history. How many of you have benefited from a
photographic moment with Corolla, a special ride or a special moment that has been captured
whether you really wanted that moment captured or not. She is always around with her camera.
We relish the opportunity to relive those special moments at the Chapter meetings when we see
the results of her labor on the big screen and we wonder, "When did she take that picture?"
And this Chapter would not be where it is today without the efforts of Rene' and BK! The people
who helped to establish this Chapter many years ago. And here they are still giving of their time
and efforts to Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.! There are others out there who volunteer and are always
active in the Chapter. These I've named and reminded you of are the ones who make this Chapter
as good as it is.
So now it is 2007 and I feel renewed. Chris Robey will again be the Head Road Captain. Diana
Bodden will be his assistant. Andy Andresen is the new Safety Officer. Scott is the Assistant
Director. Corolla will still be there with her camera. Terri will continue to do our PowerPoint and
will be our Activities Officer. In addition to these we have a new Membership Officer, Michelle
Conway. You read about her in last months HOGWASH. She will be responsible for all
membership information. With Michelle we got another package deal, as her husband Bobby is a
new Road Captain.
So yeah I am looking forward to 2007 with this Chapter and wondering just what will we
accomplish together. It is my hope that when you see these individuals you will thank them for
their time and effort and ask what you can do to help them. This Chapter is something special
and it's because of these leaders and members like you. We are going to have fun this year with
many rides and events. We're getting excited and I hope you will come along for the ride. So
until I see you out there, Remember Ride for Fun!

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
A Word from Chris
January's Road Captain of the month is Diana Bodden. Thanks Diana for the hard work.
This year is anything but uneventful so far. Nothing major is up, but there are many things going
on. The ride calendar is filling up. As I sit here looking at March I know it is going to be a good
month for riding. The Road Captains are stepping up to make sure you have plenty of choices for
what is usually an unpredictable weather month. Make sure you look at the upcoming activities
on the second page of the HOGWASH. There is a lot planned for this year. Check your schedule
and make sure you make time for your passion, riding.
Don't forget to make sure BK has your e-mail address. I will be sending out reminders for
upcoming rides and the Road Captains will be doing some unlisted impromptu rides from time to
time on dates when the chapter doesn't have a prearranged ride.
One last reminder, on the new sign in sheets we are asking for your e-mail address. Please jot it
down legibly. The Road Captains will be in touch via e-mail after their rides for your feedback.
Thanks for your participation, remember this is your chapter and the Officers and Road Captains
are here to make sure you get the most out of it.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Safety Corner
After the Ride
Are you serious about ALL aspects of safety on a two-wheeler? If so, consider this initiative.
When you've had a grand day riding your favorite steed, and you pull into the garage to 'put her
to bed', is there a unique way you dismount? After all, we are all as diverse as our scoots. So it
stands to reason that we don't all have the same routine. Most folks just turn off the key and drop
it to the side with little attention to detail. However, we could perhaps save ourselves some angst
if we acquire some new habits.
Use the KILL SWITCH first. You don't even have to move your right hand to do this. Since your
right thumb is eventually connected to your brain via nerve and muscle, it stands to reason that
repetition of this action will become an acquired memory. And then when the brain triggers you
to activate that "emergency button" located somewhere in the right side cluster of switches, your
thumb will not be confused as to its duty.
Now, TURN OFF THE IGNITION switch. Use the left hand to do this and your right hand is still
where it should be - holding the front brake lever. With the same left hand, TURN THE FUEL
VALVE OFF (if not a fuel-injected bike). Yes, today's modern carbureted motorcycle can still
get a stuck needle valve and leak. Motorcycles do not sleep well in a puddle of gas. Of course
that will be corrected automatically if there is a gas water heater pilot light in the garage.
Put the SIDE STAND DOWN and visually check it locked down as you lean the bike over. Make
sure the bike is in "Park" (first gear). That way, the bike won't move as you dismount and
tomorrow it may actually be where you parked it. A motorcycle cuddling up to your nice shiny
car at midnight is not a desirable alternative.
HANDLEBARS FULL-LOCK LEFT provides a more stable and motion resistant bike. The
front-end may otherwise "flop over" and cause damage. And if somehow it gets "touched" from
the rear, there is less chance of the bike moving forward and the side stand collapsing. Ouch!
CONNECT A BATTERY CHARGER if you don't ride for a week or more. The next ride may
have to be postponed. Why, you ask?
'If you don't trickle, you may be in a pickle!’

Roadside Assistance Programs
This is a synopsis of the roadside assistance offered by H.O.G. and a cursory overview of the
companies utilized by HD Insurance Division: Progressive, Foremost, Dairyland, and Marquette.
The H.O.G. Basic Roadside Assistance Program is provided to H.O.G. members free of charge.
This provides for one event (emergency; breakdown; lockout; etc.) per year and pays UP TO
$100 for that event.
For an additional $20/year, you can upgrade to the Deluxe Package. This provides for unlimited
towing "Sign and Ride" coverage (no out of pocket expense).
For $30/year, you receive the Deluxe Package, and a travel package that reimburses certain
related transportation, hotel, food, fuel, expenses etc.
Remember though, each of the three programs utilize the same towing service vendors.
These programs are provided by a private company named Road America. When you call the
emergency number for assistance, Road America uses a master list of contractual vendors to
service the event. Unfortunately, there have been an exceedingly high percentage of disgruntled
customers when dealing with the tow service that responds to the call - if they even show up.
Complaints are varied: excessive delays on the phone waiting for a rep; damage to the bike from
improper handling; improper truck/equipment/tie downs/; extremely long waits for the service to
arrive at the scene; etc.
Apparently, countless vendors who seek a contract with Road America misrepresent their
experience and/or ability to handle motorcycles. According to the Road America representatives,
the only way to correct this problem is to file a complaint with Road America, who in turn will
reprimand, penalize, or remove them from the list. This of course does not help the stranded
biker when he needs the road side assistance.
Road America has accepted the offer to provide them with a list of proven wrecker/towing
services with which we as bikers have had direct experience/knowledge.
I have recently updated our old towing services list by personally contacting them and
ascertaining if they had the proper equipment and trained personnel to handle a full dressed
Harley-Davidson. The accuracy of this new list is of course incumbent upon the towing services
integrity to be forthright in their representation. If any chapter member has had experience with
any service on this "chapter list,” pro or con, it would be helpful to have that information.
With the aforementioned in mind, consider alternatives available to you. With your motorcycle
insurance coverage, you often have a free or low-cost rider that provides for Roadside
Assistance. The exact terms vary by policy.
On a Progressive policy for example, if you have comprehensive coverage, the Roadside
Assistance is free and it provides "Sign and Ride", some roadside labor; and a provision for
hotels, food, transportation, etc. This requires you to have collision coverage rather than
comprehensive.
Other companies have other parameters. If you ride a scoot upon which you only carry liability
coverage, you may still be able to add the roadside assistance for a small additional premium. If
not, then the H.O.G. Roadside Assistance may be your only option. Read your policy and look at
the H.O.G. plan online. Then compare the coverage available under the differing scenarios and
the cost of each.
The bottom line is - it's a personal choice as to how you want to be helped at 2:00 a.m. in
mid-Nebraska when it's 45 degrees and there's a rainstorm about to soak your world!
Keep the dirty side down.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a UserId and password to access these pages. I will print the UserId and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to post messages and upload pictures. You will have to register to sign on. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Chris Robey will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call the Road Captain listed for the ride.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,
www.atlantahog.com or the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

ROAD TRIP
Market Street Ride
Please join me for a ride to Market Street in Dalton. We will be taking a 2 to 2½ hour ride to
Dalton with one break along the way. There are several places to eat in the market street vicinity.
We can decide once we arrive. We are convinced that you will have a good time. There are outlet
malls there if you wish to shop at the end of the ride.

Ride to Andersonville POW Museum
Come join us on a ride to a historic Civil War POW camp March 31. The museum itself opened
in 1998 and is being refurbished in February 07. In order to get there in time for lunch and to see
the site we’ll do part of this ride on the interstate and part on the country roads. The mileage one way is 160, so we’ll make a gas stop on the way. We’ll eat lunch at Yoder’s Amish Restaurant in Montezuma. I’ll make this a round robin ride so we’ll come back a different route. Check out the website www.nps.gov for information on the Andersonville NHS.

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Butler's Mill Recap
It was COLD no better way to put it. The sun was out and the sky was blue. Close to 40 degrees
was the best we had. I left my house all bundled up and plugged in expecting to have a simple
ride to the dealership and back home. What crazy person would venture out on a bike in this kind
of weather? Well there were seven of us, Erik and Fiona Grandowski, Andy Andresen, Ed and
Joan Chowning, Jim Stearns and myself. It was an uneventful ride except for a small fuel
miscalculation, not a big deal. The food was great and the company was outstanding. It was quite
an exciting adventure. I look forward to seeing everyone on the next ride.
