Closed events are those chapter events which are open to chapter members and one guest per member.
Member events are events that are open only to H.O.G. members.
Open events are those chapter events which are open to chapter members, national H.O.G. members and other guests as desired.
If you are interested in becoming a H.O.G. member, contact
Rene' Durham, or call 770-944-1340
MISSION STATEMENT
Atlanta Chapter provides members with exciting, safe, organized riding activities and
social events to expand horizons, fulfill dreams, and create lifelong memories through personal relationships forged in iron and steel.
MEMBER BENEFIT CHANGE
NEW RIDER REWARDS PROGRAM
Ronnie Godwin, General Manager Harley-Davidson of Atlanta
I want to take a moment to let you all know that in 2006 Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is launching a Rider Rewards Program. This program is designed to reward those customers who are most deserving. Consequently, customers who do more business with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will reap more benefits as a result of the program.
In the past, many have only joined the Atlanta Chapter merely to receive a discount anytime and every time they made a purchase at the dealership. To many, the Chapter is known only as a discount club. This has removed the true purpose and meaning behind what H.O.G. chapters are really about. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the National Chapter both discourage
dealers from having an across the board discount for H.O.G. members for this very reason. In keeping with the factory and National Chapters recommendations, we are amending our store’s discount and rewards programs.
The Rider Rewards Program will be available to our entire customer base, including our Chapter members. The Rider Rewards Program will be included FREE OF CHARGE as a part of active chapter membership. For non-chapter members there will be a cost to be a member of the Rider Rewards Program. Non-chapter members will have to acquire their Loyalty card for $9.95 annually or $39.95 for a lifetime membership.
The program is a way for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customers to earn credit toward future purchases. Each time you make a purchase in MotorClothes, Parts and Accessories and the Service department you will earn a percentage back of every dollar spent. Moreover, points will be earned on qualifying merchandise only. Chapter members will also receive points for their participation in Chapter or dealership sanctioned events and functions (e.g., chapter meetings,
chapter rides, socials, volunteer time, etc.).
The Rider Rewards Program will begin in January 2006. We are looking forward to implementing this new program. We are confident you will find this Riders Reward program to be rewarding to you.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
First, I want to apologize for not having an article in the February HOGWASH. One of these days, I will accept the fact that I do not get along with computers. When I sent my article to BK last month, he did not receive it. Therefore, some of this information is a little late. I know the computers won’t change so I guess I’ll have to catch up.
WOW, what a way to start the New Year! We arrived at the dealership under some cloudy skies at 10:00 a.m. to participate in the New Years Day Good Luck Ride to Buckner’s Restaurant. There were 42 bikes and as we headed south the sun came out and we rode on in 60 plus degree weather. We arrived at Buckner’s to wait in the usual 30 minute line. We sat down to some great
food with great company. About 18 bikes made the trip back toward the dealership together. Thanks to Rich Lalama for riding sweep and to Terri Varnum, Scott Vandiver, Diana Bodden,Chris Robey, and Dave Trefzger for riding the middle and keeping 42 bikes together for the entire trip. But isn't that the way you want it to be for the year, great riding, good food and good friends! If you missed it then you missed a lot. Thanks to all who showed up. Hope to see you out
there on a ride soon.
As you know if you've kept up with the news in your HOGWASH, the Chapter does not have anyone who has been willing to be the Activities Officer for this year. If that remains the case, the Chapter will have several events this year that may not occur or will not be as successful as in years past. So once again, the Chapter Officers are asking for your help but with a different approach. It may be that you, yes YOU, would be willing to help but cannot devote the amount of
time necessary to being the Activities Officer for the entire year. So what we are looking for a few volunteers who would be willing to take on one activity and coordinate that one activity. The following are a few activities that we need YOUR help with. The Share House is broke down into four activities, Easter Baskets, Halloween Candy, Thanksgiving Food donations, and the Angel Tree for Christmas. Terri Varnum will still promote and lead The March of Dimes and The Muscular Dystrophy Association Rides. We need someone who will coordinate some fund raisers, the Chili Cook-off and the chapter Christmas Social. There may be other activities throughout the year that come up. Or, you as a member may want to coordinate your own idea or activity. We need your help. Please challenge yourself and enlist the help of a few friends. This way one person does not have to handle everything. As a Chapter, let's spread the effort and also the fun.
At the January meeting, Chris and Janvier Williams stepped forward and volunteered to take on the responsibility of coordinating the chapter’s involvement in the March of Dimes. At the January meeting, Freddie Arnold of March of Dimes, presented the Chapter with a plaque for our Chapters efforts in 2005. As a chapter in 2005, we raised more than $10,000.00 for March of Dimes. With Chris and Janvier leading us, let’s try to do even better in 2006.
Todd Graham has volunteered to be the Chapter Membership Officer. Diana Bodden also stepped forward and offered to help Todd whenever he needs it.
I just finished reading a book titled "Under and Alone." This book chronicles the events of a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) Agent who was able to infiltrate one of the most violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs in the world, the Mongols. I mention this book because if you have ever attended any of the major bike rallies like Daytona, Sturgis, Laughlin, etc. or simply gone to the Lakewood Fairgrounds for one of the Swap Meets you have seen members of some of these Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMG's). They may be the Hells Angles, Bandidos,
Mongols, or Outlaws just to name a few. This book gives you and inside look into the lives of these bikers. Not only would the book make for interesting reading but it can also prove educational should you ever find yourself in an area or at an event where these bikers. But a word of caution, this book is very graphic. All I can say is I'm glad that we ride for fun. The book is available through Random House and the author is William Queen.
Let's have a year of great rides, good food, and special times with friends. Make some new friends, rekindle old friendships and make lifelong memories. Take a moment to read our Chapter Mission Statement and then live it.
Ride for Fun.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
Congratulations to Diana Bodden on being January’s Road Captain of the Month. She attended four events and logged 330 miles for the chapter. Thanks Diana keep up the good work. Would you like to be a volunteer for the chapter? Do you like to be out front and lead others to new and exciting destinations? Then you should become a Road Captain.
On Saturday, March 25 the chapter will be conducting our annual Road Captains Class. It will start at 9:00 a.m. in the Riders Edge trailer behind Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. We will cover all the ins and outs of being a Road Captain and what is involved. If you are interested or just curious come on and check it out.
I will be leading several “Group Ride for Beginners” rides this year which will hit the high points of group riding. Group Riding 101 is a Riders Edge developed class that covers in depth just about everything you ever wanted to know about riding safely in a group. You will receive a small booklet to keep on your bike so you can thumb through it from time to time and a vest pin similar to the Rider’s Edge pin. We will be viewing a video on group riding and we will go for a group ride utilizing the techniques that we have learned.
On March 25 the chapter will conduct a Group Riding 101 class. There is a $10 charge to offset the cost of materials used for the class. Group Riding 101 will also be held in the Rider's Edge trailer starting at 1:00 p.m. Come for both classes. We will break from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. for lunch. Everyone is welcome so put both down on your calendar.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
SAFETY OFFICER’S REPORT
QUICK TIPS: General Guidelines for Riding a Motorcycle Safely
Be visible:
• Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time.
• Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night.
• On your clothing and motorcycle use reflective strips or decals.
• Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have.
• Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping.
• If a motorist doesn’t see you, don’t be afraid to use your horn.
Dress for safety:
• Wear a quality helmet and eye protection.
• Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet.
• In cold weather wear clothing in layers.
• Wear protective clothing leather or other thick material.
• Choose long sleeves and pants, ankle boots, and gloves.
• Remember – the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear.
Apply effective mental strategies:
• Constantly search the road for changing conditions.
• Allow space and time to respond to other motorists’ actions.
• Give other motorists time and space to respond to you.
• Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible.
• Watch out for turning vehicles.
• Signal your next move in advance.
• Avoid between lane weaving.
• Pretend you’re invisible, and ride extra defensively.
• Don't ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Know and follow the rules of the road.
• Obey the speed limit.
Know your bike and how to use it:
• Get formal training and take refresher courses.
• Before going into heavy traffic practice developing your riding techniques. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces.
Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don’t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they’ve never been on a motorcycle and can’t properly judge your speed.
Until we ride again.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to post messages and upload pictures. You will have to register to sign on. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Chris Robey will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call the Road Captain listed for the ride.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,
www.atlantahog.com or the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Impromptu Ride Recap
On January 28, I lead an impromptu ride to Baby Jane’s Restaurant in Dallas. It was a beautiful day for riding. We had 24 people in the group when we left the dealership. It was a nice leisurely ride along some great back roads that took us the long way around to Dallas. It was a short hour to reach our destination. Baby Jane’s is a relatively new place that offers all you can eat buffet style home cooking. The food was great and the price was very reasonable. I want to thank everyone who came out for my first ride of the New Year. I also want to thank Andy Andresen,David Trefzger and Diana Bodden for helping with the ride. I hope to see you all next time.
