MEMBER BENEFIT CHANGE
NEW RIDER REWARDS PROGRAM
Ronnie Godwin, General Manager Harley-Davidson of Atlanta
I want to take a moment to let you all know that in 2006 Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is launching a Rider Rewards Program. This program is designed to reward those customers who are most deserving. Consequently, customers who do more business with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will reap more benefits as a result of the program.
In the past, many have only joined the Atlanta Chapter merely to receive a discount anytime and every time they made a purchase at the dealership. To many, the Chapter is known only as a discount club. This has removed the true purpose and meaning behind what H.O.G. chapters are really about. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the National Chapter both discourage
dealers from having an across the board discount for H.O.G. members for this very reason. In keeping with the factory and National Chapters recommendations, we are amending our store’s discount and rewards programs.
The Rider Rewards Program will be available to our entire customer base, including our Chapter members. The Rider Rewards Program will be included FREE OF CHARGE as a part of active chapter membership. For non-chapter members there will be a cost to be a member of the Rider Rewards Program. Non-chapter members will have to acquire their Loyalty card for $9.95 annually or $39.95 for a lifetime membership.
The program is a way for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customers to earn credit toward future purchases. Each time you make a purchase in MotorClothes, Parts and Accessories and the Service department you will earn a percentage back of every dollar spent. Moreover, points will be earned on qualifying merchandise only. Chapter members will also receive points for their participation in Chapter or dealership sanctioned events and functions (e.g., chapter meetings,
chapter rides, socials, volunteer time, etc.).
The Rider Rewards Program will begin in January 2006. We are looking forward to implementing this new program. We are confident you will find this Riders Reward program to be rewarding to you.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Well 2005 has come to an end. The cold weather has arrived and we wonder what will this winter be like here in the South. Will there be snow? For sure we will probably have some ice and otherwise nasty weather days. For some the end of the year and winter means the end of another riding season. For others there is no end to the riding season here in the South. You may miss a few days due to the weather but there’s usually some good weather days mixed in to get in a ride. So whether you have parked it for a few months or you keep the motor warm by riding every chance you get I hope 2005 was a good year of riding for you. Now let’s get ready for 2006.
I want to recognize one of the highlights of the Chapter for 2005. First I want to thank all the Chapter Officers and volunteers for their efforts this year. Although there were many great rides and events that the Chapter held or participated in during the year there is one event that really showed the character and makeup of this Chapter. The event was the Blake Gammill “A
Ultimate Sacrifice Ride.” This ride was in memory of a Douglas County Deputy who was killed in the line of duty. The ride raised more than $40,000.00 for Blake’s family. We as Chapter were asked to help out and help we did. We as a Chapter had more than 30 volunteers present not including all the dealership employee volunteers, we made sure more than thirteen hundred
people, twelve hundred motorcycles, a ride that stretched more than 8 miles was an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.
This year we had approximately 560 members. Throughout the year only 241 different members participated in any Chapter event. Aside from the Chapter officers I would like to recognize the participation of a few members. First off is Diana Bodden who joined the Chapter last December then became a Road Captain and attended 26 Chapter events, Kevin Magill 25, Richard Sudduth 17, Jerry Gaudy 15, John Morgan 15, Richard and Debra Jackson 14, Jim McDonald 14, Lee Penley 13, George Upchurch 13, Andy Andresen 12, Rod Cardinal 12, Todd Graham 12 and
Gary Griffin 12. Thanks to all these members who participated in numerous Chapter events. We look forward to many new rides and events in 2006 and hope to see you there.
You will notice some changes in 2006 in the way we do business as a Chapter. We made several changes for 2005 and we will continue to listen to you the members as we endeavor to improve the Chapter. In 2006 we will meet inside at a local restaurant (See Rene’s article for details),once the weather warms we will go back to having our meetings at the dealership pavilion. We will still start at 7:00 p.m. and try to have our meeting finished by 7:45 p.m. Then we will have food and a social time. There will be a charge of $4.00 per person for the meal. We are still looking for some new Road Captains and some new ideas for Chapter Rides so if you are interested in being a Road Captain please contact Chris Robey. If you have an idea then let a Chapter Officer know.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. The weather will be nice some days so get out and enjoy a ride. Remember those who serve in our military, especially those who are out of country and away from families ensuring the freedoms we enjoy. May God bless them, their families and all of you? I hope to see you in 2006 at many Chapter events.

I want to thank Terri Varnum for her work in 2005 as Assistant Director. Terri will be back in '06 as a Road Captain. Thanks also to Doug Claycomb for serving as our Safety Officer. Doug after being promoted to Chief in the United States Navy now has orders transferring him back to Texas. We wish Doug and Carol well in their move in January. We will miss their smiling faces around here as they were very involved in our Chapter and made many friends in their short time here. Good luck you two, thanks for everything. Thanks also go out to Nancy Bjere for being our activities officer for the past year.
I would ask all our members to take the time to thank these officers for all the time and effort they put in to running this Chapter. Without these volunteers there would be no Chapter.
Ride for Fun.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
I want to start off by saying Happy New Year to everyone. I'm looking forward to a great year of riding with all of you. If you ever have any questions, concerns or ideas feel free to contact me anytime. All my contact information is here in the HOGWASH. I hope to have some informative articles this year. I thought I would start off by asking are you new to riding? Are you new to
group riding? I would like to see more new faces on the rides this year. I have been asked several times if a ride would be a good beginner’s ride for people either new to riding or group riding. I hope this will help you to decide on your first ride with the chapter. So you passed the riding test, got your new bike and you are ready to go riding. You see a ride in the HOGWASH that you would like to go on but you’re not sure if you’re ready. What do you do? The first thing you should do is look at the rating. Is it a one pig or a big five pigs? The pig rating the chapter uses has to do with the difficulty of a ride, be it distance or the more technical/curve of the ride. One represents the easiest. Five represents the hardest. If you’re new to riding you need to stick with the easier rides, one or two pigs until you have gotten comfortable with your bike or having a group of bikes around you. If you’re not sure about riding in a group but you’re ready to take the
plunge just come to a one or two pig ride and let the Road Captain know that you are new to group riding. They will be happy to help make you more comfortable. I am planning some easy beginner group rides this year. I’m thinking something like a short lunch ride to get your feet wet and start you on the way to bigger groups and over night rides you hear so much about. If you are interested in a “Group Ride for Beginners” keep an eye on the chapter calendar.
If you have any suggestions on introducing new riders to group rides please let me know.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
SAFETY OFFICER’S REPORT
There are things you should consider to make the ride more safe and more enjoyable. First, remember that the sun is lower in the sky. If your ride takes you through Georgia's mountain twisties, you may find the sun in your eyes when you least expect it. A good pair of Sunglasses is a must to take along. Next, if you do get away from the city, keep in mind that this is the time of the year when small animals are preparing for winter. Stay alert. Especially watch out for the deer.
Deer, sometimes dogs and other small animals can dart out of their hiding places at the edge of the road just as you are about to pass them. Remember that it’s you or the critter. If you try to avoid hitting that small animal by suddenly swerving, you may find your tires are no longer on the pavement. If you must hit one of these small creatures, try to do it squarely. It may sound cold but you have the safety of yourself, any passengers, other motorists and pedestrians, and your bike to consider.
I want to caution you about trees and their leaves that drop on the road in the fall. When you're looking up at the wondrous colors you might not have noticed there are leaves on the pavement ready to reduce your traction. So, ride alertly and ride with care. Fall is not a season to be rushed. Don't ride like you wish the ride were over. Enjoy the ride; that's why you ride a Harley, isn't it?

Wind chill can really put a chill on when you are riding down the road. The chart below can be found at: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/conversion/windchillchart.html

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to post messages and upload pictures. You will have to register to sign on. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Chris Robey will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call the Road Captain liste for the ride.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,
www.atlantahog.com or the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

POTPOURRI
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Bottle Medallions to Be Replaced
When I delivered the Single Barrel whiskey to the dealership on December 3, I was showing Rene’ one of the bottles. It hit me that the medallions on those bottles are incorrect. The bottom line should have read “20th Year” reflecting the fact that our chapter is celebrating its 20th anniversary and thereby making it a commemorative bottle. Instead it reads, “Lithia Springs, GA.” Our location is on the barrel and also on our brick on the Single Barrel Society Wall at the distillery.
I have gone back to my contact at Jack Daniel’s. He has reordered the medallions. They should ship on December 19. I will get these to Rene as soon as possible after I receive them. Please see her at the dealership to obtain one per purchased. I imagine this will be sometime shortly after Christmas.
For those of you who did not pre-order a bottle of whiskey, bottles are available from the chapter for $43.00 each, and as they say on TV, “While supplies last.” A bottle is on display. I imagine they will go fast once folks see them. There are roughly 130 bottles available, as we had around
100 or so which were pre-ordered.
While you are at the dealership, check out the barrel itself. It is sitting next to our H.O.G. bulletin board.

Pig Ride Legend
One pig - steady cruising rides of relatively short distance, easy on the throttle, few curves, etc.
Two pigs - a bit longer or have some curves but nothing too challenging.
Three pigs - the ride should be of moderate difficulty.
Four and five pigs - rides with a high number of curves, long distance, saddle time, road conditions, speed, and weather.

ROAD TRIP
Ride to Nowhere Recap
It was a perfect day and a great ride. Since the weather was so nice the ride to nowhere became a ride too somewhere. It was cool when we gathered at the pavilion to decide where to go. I had brought a few ideas with me. It was decided that we would head to Fibbers in Cedar Bluff, AL. There were 13 bikes and 15 people. We took a simple route, US-278, SR-100, and SR-20 which turns into SR-9 at the Alabama state line. We arrived at Fibbers after a short two hour ride. As usual the food was great. Fibbers is a buffet type restaurant. Most of us ate until we couldn’t move. After lunch the group decided to head up to Little River Canyon. This is always a great place. This was the first time I came back SR-176 that runs along the west rim of the canyon. What a scenic ride! I want to thank everyone for coming out. I especially want to thank Diana for riding sweep. I hope to see you all next the ride.

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Impromptu Ride
On January 26, I will be leading a ride. Not sure where or how long it will be at this time due to the unpredictability of January weather. I think will be best to decide the destination closer to the date. We will meet at 11:00 a.m. at the pavilion at HDA and leave at 11:30 a.m. I will keep everyone informed via e-mail when I have more details. If BK does not have your e-mail address, please send it to him at hog@mindspring.com so you can be kept up to date between
newsletters.
