MEMBER BENEFIT CHANGE
NEW RIDER REWARDS PROGRAM
Ronnie Godwin, General Manager
I want to take a moment to let you all know that in 2006 Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is launching a Rider Rewards Program. This program is designed to reward those customers who are most deserving. Consequently, customers who do more business with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will reap more benefits as a result of the program.
In the past, many have only joined the Atlanta Chapter merely to receive a discount anytime and every time they made a purchase at the dealership. To many, the Chapter is known only as a discount club. This has removed the true purpose and meaning behind what H.O.G. chapters are really about. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and the National Chapter both discourage
dealers from having an across the board discount for H.O.G. members for this very reason. In keeping with the factory and National Chapters recommendations, we are amending our store’s discount and rewards programs.
The Rider Rewards Program will be available to our entire customer base, including our Chapter members. The Rider Rewards Program will be included FREE OF CHARGE as a part of active chapter membership. For non-chapter members there will be a cost to be a member of the Rider Rewards Program. Non-chapter members will have to acquire their Loyalty card for $9.95 annually or $39.95 for a lifetime membership.
The program is a way for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customers to earn credit toward future purchases. Each time you make a purchase in MotorClothes, Parts and Accessories and the Service department you will earn a percentage back of every dollar spent. Moreover, points will be earned on qualifying merchandise only. Chapter members will also receive points for their participation in Chapter or dealership sanctioned events and functions (e.g., chapter meetings,
chapter rides, socials, volunteer time, etc.).
The Rider Rewards Program will begin in January 2006. We are looking forward to implementing this new program. We are confident you will find this Riders Reward program to be rewarding to you.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Hopefully you have been able to get out and do some riding in the beautiful weather that we have been having. The leaves have been changing and we are certainly making up for all the days we missed earlier in the year due to the rain. It’s been nothing but dry here lately.
Look for some changes in 2006 to our monthly Chapter Meetings. We are looking for an eating establishment to hold our winter meetings indoors. When the weather warms and we return to having our meetings at the pavilion and we will go back to providing a meal. There may be a small fee of a couple of dollars to offset the cost and the meetings may last a little longer. This
will allow additional time to eat and socialize. These are just a couple of the changes that we intend to implement. If you have other ideas or suggestions please let us know. It is our hope that this will encourage a greater participation of our membership.
Take note of the article on available Officer’s Positions. If you would like to become more involved and take a leadership role, with regards to the direction of the Chapter please contact me to discuss further.
As we approach the holiday season let us remember our charity of choice “The SHARE House” (A battered women and children’s shelter located in Douglas County). Once again this year we will strive to provide Thanksgiving baskets, and Christmas gifts to those placed on the Angel
Tree at the dealership.
It is my hope and prayer that you will take time to reflect on what the Reason for the Season is and that you will make time for family and riding. Have a wonderful Holiday Season. I hope to see you at the Christmas Social on December 9 at the dealership.
Want to be an Officer

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
“So Long for Now” – Never say “good-bye”
Here we are, coming to the end of 2005. We have all done well. It’s been a great year of outstanding riding, a safe and fun year for the most part. Not much to report or comment on, and that’s a good thing. As your safety officers this will be the last that you’ll hear from me. We, Carole and I will be moving by the end of January. The Navy says it’s time for me to go, so off to Fort Worth, TX we go.
I leave you with a few of acronyms; T-CLOCS, MOM and SEE.
T-Tires / Wheels-pressure, tread, rims/spokes, bearings, brakes
C-Controls-levers, switches, cables, hoses, throttle
L-Lights/Electrics-working condition
O-Oil/other Fluids (coolant, hydraulics, fuel) – levels, leaks
C-Chassis-suspension, drive components
S-Side stand (center stand)
MOM –Motorcycle Owner’s Manual, this is your primary source of information about how a motorcycle should be inspected and maintained. This will help to ensure a trouble-free ride and
give you the confidence that your motorcycle will respond properly.
S-Search-to scan aggressively for potential factors and hazards.
E-Evaluate-anticipate problems, factors accumulate + interact to form a hazard or conflict.
E-Execute-three action step-adjust speed, adjust position, communicate your intentions.
We often talk about the Harley Davidson family, Carole and I know with all of our travels that the Navy is so willing to provide for us, there is a true bond with all bikers. We would like to thank all of you that have made us welcomed into the Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter. It will be an experience that we will always remember.
I had an uncle that said to me one time. A good-bye is too permanent so, “so long for now.” Till we meet again, my prayer to all of you is that God gives you strength and through his strength protects you always. For I believe God loves bikers, as we ride, we are in his wind and he is with us at all times. May you always keep the shiny side up, God Bless You all, and “so long for now.”
Until next time, ride safe. Be sure to take your time, enjoy the ride and always “keep the shiny side up.”

SHARE House Angel Tree
Once again we will be placing angels to adopt on the Christmas tree at the dealership. The child/mom’s name and age will be on the angel. Their wish list will be in a notebook under the tree. Gifts will need to be wrapped with a copy of the angel attached. They will need to be at the dealership by December 10, 2005. On Saturday, December 17, 2005 we will have a ride for the SHARE House to deliver their gifts with Santa as our special guest.
Unfortunately this year physical disasters have tapped all of our resources. I hope we can make Christmas bright for the people at the SHARE House. I know I am very thankful for what we have been blessed with and feel that giving back to others is part of the joy of the Holiday Season. Let's see that great Harley "Family Spirit.” My new home phone contact number is 770-739-3068.

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,

POTPOURRI
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Delivery Date Set
For those of you who have been waiting patiently this past year for your commemorative bottles of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel whiskey, your wait is over. Those who “pre bought” will be able to pick up their whiskey on Saturday, December 10, 2005, from 10:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. at the dealership, and I will be there to handle this.
On October 15, Tommye and me, Scott and Corolla, and John and Sonya Riggs went to the distillery for our chapter barrel “selection” (although they do not refer to this as a “tasting” like a winery would, that is basically what it was). What a fun time it was! They treated us like royalty and it was an interesting process. On top of everything else, it was weather wise, one of the best riding weekends I have ever seen!
Once our distillery tour was over, they took us into the Lynchburg Room and had set out six sets of three glasses, as we were selecting from three different barrels. Randall Fanning, our host, talked us through the process which first consisted of experiencing the aroma of each sample. One could, with Randall’s guidance, actually smell the difference from one which was “Oakey” to one which was more “vanilla’ to one that might be more “caramelized.” All three of these flavors result from the whiskey’s interaction with the barrel’s interior (charred oak) as it sits in the top of the non climate-controlled warehouse during the aging process. Our particular barrel was aged for six years (minimum is 4). Once the “aroma experience” was done, we went on to actually tasting each one. While some samples felt distinctly “stronger” than others, they all in fact were 94 proof (all other Jack Daniel’s is 80 proof)---and this explains the bottling date. Once the barrels which are Single Barrel candidates are tested and reach 94 proof, they must be bottled to keep from getting stronger as continued aging would do. So for those of you who plan
to keep your whiskey for a while before drinking it to let it age some more, forget it---aging stops as soon as it leaves the barrel. So go on and enjoy it!
As it happened, most of us liked the sample numbered 387 and so that was the barrel we selected. It turns out that this barrel was actually bottled on 9-13-05, and so all we had left to do prior to shipping was for the distillery to receive our commemorative medallions and put them on the bottles and case ‘em up. Our whiskey is due to ship from Lynchburg on 11-22-05 to the
distributor and from there will go to our retailer.
For those of you who have never toured the distillery, it is an interesting event whether or not you actually drink, plus Lynchburg and that area of Tennessee makes for a great ride. Also, our chapter’s wooden brick on the Single Barrel Society Wall should be up by the end of the year, so in the future if you go up to tour the distillery, be sure to look for it---“Atlanta Chapter H.O.G., Lithia Springs, GA” when you get to the Bottling building portion of the tour. Ask your tour director how to locate it.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND THANKS
CHRIS HOUGHTON, OWNER
The holidays are here already. And yes, we all have so much for which to be thankful -- whether it’s the weather, our job, our family and friends, our motorcycle, our motorcycle family. Each of us can find something that we really appreciate in life. Some refuse to admit and acknowledge how fortunate they truly are for what they have. In some instances, we may have to stop to reflect and be thankful for what we don’t have.
On behalf of the entire staff at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, I wish to extend our most warm and sincere appreciation to every member of the Atlanta Chapter and to all cherished customers, clients and friends. We do realize that without you all – we would not exist. By the time many of you read this, Thanksgiving will be just days away or for others it will be days passed. Regardless of when you peruse this newsletter, the entire staff at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta wishes you a very happy holiday season.
Again, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your participation in the Atlanta Chapter during 2005. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the upcoming social.
Season Greetings H.O.G. Members
There are so many new members that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting. I would love to meet you during your holiday shopping ventures. Let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Shyra Houghton and I am the Manager of MotorClothes. I have been involved with the purchasing of the MotorClothes and general merchandise for many years. I have been a part of
Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for 12 years. Janie, who is now the Assistant Manager has been such an asset to the MotorClothes department and has a passion for serving her customers. Our current MotorClothes staff is excited about the upcoming holiday season and eager to meet your needs. Our Motorclothes associates are Stacy and Rhonda as well as our part-time associate Aaron. Kim
who has been a part of the Harley-Davidson of Atlanta family for years is back in the MotorClothes Department as our Inventory Controller.
We have made a lot of changes within the department that we believe will serve you more effectively. Wearing the clothes and accessories is such a big part of the “Harley-Davidson” life style. Having the proper leathers and other riding gear is extremely important. I would like to encourage you and other customers to give your input and suggestions on how we can serve you
better. If you see items that you like, please let us know so that we can continue to stock similar items. Our MotorClothes department is broken down into several parts. We have Men, Women, Kids, Collectibles, Riding Gear, Jewelry, Rain Gear, Footwear, Gifts, “dealership T-shirts,” and
so much more. At different times of the year we carry specialty items. I have begun having my staff explain to customers the difference in some of our products. A majority of our merchandise comes from Harley-Davidson Motor Company. We also carry what we call Licensed Product.
We attend two shows a year in which we order all of the products. A large percentage of these are a one time order only. So many times we are asked if we have back stock of these one time order items. Due to their lack of availability, there is no back stock.
A majority of the time, we put out every item that we have in that style. My point is that ‘when you see it you might want to purchase it then…it may not be there for long.’ We of course will do our very best to try and locate the item you are looking for from other dealerships but it is sometimes very difficult. Our goal is to meet all of your expectations whatever they may be. Regarding helmets and other specific riding gear those items are what we call core items. We can order them and have them within a few days. When we do have a special order, we do require full payment. When the item comes in we will call you within 36 hours.
I hope that I have helped you feel more encouraged to shop with us at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. We appreciate your business and loyalty. We feel confident that we can serve all of your motorcycling needs. Whether it is a New Motorcycle, Parts & Accessories, MotorClothes, Service, or Riders Edge. Again, I look forward to meeting you as well as your friends and family.
If you would like to e-mail me with concerns or suggestions please do so at
Shyra@hdatlanta.com.
Ride Safe and Happy Holidays,

Georgia’s Law Pertaining to Motorcycles
Reprinted September 2004 HOGWASH
People are always asking me about various laws pertaining to motorcycles, so here are a few specifically for motorcycle operation.
Traffic Laws apply to persons operating motorcycles. GA Code 40-6-310
1. Handlebars more than 15" above the Seat and Pointed Backrest Prohibited. GA Code 40-6-314(b)
2. More than two headlights Prohibited. GA Code 40-8-22(b)
3. Must be equipped with Footrests for Passenger. GA Code 40-6- 314(a)
4. Must have Headlight and Taillight on While Operating GA Code 40-6-312(e)
5. Operating between lanes of Traffic Prohibited GA Code 40-6-312(c)
6. Operator and Passenger Must Have Eye Protection GA Code 40-6-315(b)
7. Operator and Passenger Must Wear Helmet GA Code 40-6-315(a)
8. Operator and Passenger Must Wear Shoes GA Code 40-6-311(e)
9. Passing in Same Lane as Another Vehicle (motorcycle) Prohibited GA Code 40-6-312(b)
10. More than Two Abreast in a Single Lane Prohibited GA Code 40-6-312(d)
By law it is permissible for two motorcycles to ride side by side on a roadway. However it is not SAFE if you are not trained in riding that way. H.O.G. does NOT recommend two bikes riding side by side and neither does this Chapter. There are too many things that can go WRONG and you have eliminated some of your emergency options.
As to the question of using the amber lenses on turn signals when you install the brake light switch that illuminates the turn signals with the brake light when the brakes are applied. Some people believe you cannot legally use the amber lens. The law under Ga. Code 40-8-26 spells out that the Brake light shall emit a red light and which shall be actuated upon application of the service brake. The brake light must be plainly visible and understandable from a distance of 300 feet to the rear both during normal sunlight and at nighttime. The law does not address having additional lights to be used a brake light signaling devices. As long as the brake light installed by the manufacturer operates properly and in accordance with the law.
If you have any questions you can go to the Georgia Department of Public Safety web site and you can look up specific laws that you might have questions about. There is a specific section that these motorcycle laws come from.

MEMBER COMMENT
Thanks for a Great Year
As the year comes to a close and the New Year is upon us, I wanted to thank everyone in the chapter for supporting the chapter and all the rides and events your Officers and Road Captains have put together, especially the support and attendance I have gotten on my rides. It has been a great year and I’m looking forward to starting the year as the new Head Road Captain. Gary has
done a great job and is moving into the Safety Officer position. I hope I can do as well as he did. I want to thank Tom Arnold and Chris Houghton for giving me this opportunity. I have a few new rides in mind as well as some old favorites. I know it is going to be a great year and with the great group of Road Captains we have, there should be a great variety of rides. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, you can contact me at thrasherfan22001@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you all on the rides.
Chris Robey, Road Captain
We Want You
The chapter is looking for some new blood, some fresh ideals, and more than a few good people. We want you to volunteer, come have fun, make new friends and be in front. We are looking for new Road Captains. Do you know some fun and exciting places that you would like to share with us? Do you like to lead others to places they have never been? Do you like to hear others say “Where in the world are we” (I do)? Do you like to stop whenever you feel like and have others wondering why? Seriously, we are looking for members who love to ride and would love to spread the love of riding. If this sounds like you, let me or any of the officers know that you’re interested. It’s an easy process. Attend a Road Captain training class (I will be setting one up the
first part of the year), ride sweep on a ride, ride as a middle Road Captain on a ride, assist in leading a ride and most importantly leading a ride. Then you, yes you too can be a Road Captain for the Atlanta Chapter. You can contact me at thrasherfan22001@yahoo.com.

ROAD TRIP
ROAD TRIP RECAP
Apple Festival Ellijay, GA Recap
It was a beautiful day for a ride with friends and new friends. We gathered at the QT for a day of riding and apples. We had 18 bikes and 26 riders. We headed north via Hwy. 61, Braswell Mt.,Knox Mt., 411, Hwy. 52 into Ellijay. Our first stop was the overlook for a picture and then on thru town to one of the many Apple Houses. There we snacked and bought apples, cider, and other tasty treats. They had dancers and music. We moved onto the lunch spot, Pooles BBQ, with no wait we all sat and enjoyed the good BBQ and the very big pickles! There was activity everywhere. Beginning in the old Square, all the shops where open, vendors in the streets and the alley's, and further down the hill was the Festival Grounds with all kinds of food, arts and crafts, animals, music, and dancers. After walking the 2 miles of booths and sites and contributing to the
economy, we took the scenic ride home via Hwy. 76. It was so beautiful and we made it home just at dark. It was a lot fun. Welcome to the new members on this ride. I hope I didn't lose 'em for another event. I enjoyed getting to know members that love to ride the way I do. Thank you all for coming out. It was great to ride and my thanks to all those that assisted me, K.C. and Chris Robey for being Sweep with such a big group in such a busy area. We got some great ideas for next year! (Always learning). Thank you for all your patience and input.

Hiawassee Recap
I called it the Riders Café Ride, but I found that the Café was locked and empty on my pre ride. So I improvised. My partner in crime on a pre ride was starved to death so we picked the restaurant across the street. Bingo, if you have never eaten at the Georgia Mountain Restaurant on Main Street in Hiawassee you have got to go there. It was a bit cool when we left the dealership with 15 bikes. It didn’t matter. Everyone was ready for our lengthy ride to the mountains. The first leg was a bit more hectic than I like. Trying to get the entire group through the red lights, up the interstate and to our first stop was a learning experience, if nothing else. We all made it ok. After that, the journey was relaxing and scenic. After hitting some twisties on SR-60, we made our 2nd stop in Suches. Everyone was in good sprits and getting a little hungry. We headed up SR-180 to do some more twisties and worked our way into Hiawassee. We arrived at the restaurant unannounced (due to the fact I had no signal when I tried to call to give them a heads up) close to 2:00 p.m. They got all 18 of us right in and immediately took our drink orders. Our waitress was amazing. As far as I could tell, she got all the orders right and new where they went. She was one of the best I have had on any of my rides. I want to thank everyone again for coming out. It’s all ways a plus when a large group shows up for the rides, reminds me why I became a road captain. I hope to see everyone on the next one.

2nd Annual Lookout/Signal Mt. Ride Recap
I spent part of Saturday cleaning my Hawg, "Black Pearl.” I was prepared to make it the lengthy Winter Wash & Wax. Then it dawned on me. The 1st Annual Mountain Ride started on a cloudy, drizzle day. So I thought better and watched some College football. Sunday morning was sunny and crisp, just great. Then the phone rang. It was Royce. "Hey it's raining in Carrollton, are you still going?" I replied: "it's sunny here, we ride!" Two miles from home until the QT, it pours. The good news: I was greeted by five bikes under the "gas canopy.” I fill up and greet the early birds. My cell phone rings, "yeah, we're going.” It rings again. It rings a third time. Suddenly, we
have 18 bikes, 22 people and SUNSHINE for the 2nd Annual Ride!
We make our way North on Hwy. 61 through Euharlee, onto Chulio Rd., onto the Rome bypass, then Hwy. 27 N to Gore Subligna Rd. We pick up Hwy. 136 W and onto Hwy. 189 N. We pull off at the Hang Glider jump off spot...literally! We had an awesome view of the valley below. Somehow as the birthdays grow so does my fear of heights. Whew, solid ground and two wheels for me. We wind our way across Lookout Mountain, past Lover's Leap, down a narrow, twisty, tree capped Hwy. 381 to the base of the mountain. We take Cummings Hwy. 2 W, under I-24, to Patrick's for lunch. After a good lunch and story telling, we head north. However, some folks did not heed my warning about filling up before riding onto Signal Mt. Yep; we lost one to the Farmer's house for gas. I could see a second squirming in his seat. Oops, the planned stop was closed. I knew my last pre ride should have taken place on a Sunday. Nonetheless, 3 miles more to gas.....and boy was he glad....another 10 miles and he would have been pushing it--uphill!
It was about 2:30 p.m. and 160 miles when we found gas. About nine bikes needed to head south for Atlanta. We say our good-byes, till the next time. The rest of us diehards travel through Suck Creek and enjoy the warm, super sunshine and great fall color, WOW, this time of the day is the warmest and brightest!
We make our way up the front of Signal, wave at our Favorite Martian's house and head for the "W" Rd. This year we are headed down the "W.” We run into some car traffic which makes the first three turns a tight fit, and then blast on down to the base of the Mountain. We pulled off at a wide place in the road and wished the other nine had stayed with us. I had more in store for this
group of experienced Merry Pranksters, but it was pushing 4:30 p.m. and darkness would be upon us. Four of them decide to head south. I look at our new member and fellow birthday boy,Del, and say "do you have anything important on Monday morning?" He grins . . . I knew I had him. Like two teenagers playing hooky from school we wished the remaining group good-bye and headed . . . NORTH! More mountains, more curves, more miles. We pulled into Monteagle, TN about 6:30 p.m. having covered 280 miles. God Bless US!
Del and I headed back to Atlanta via Sewannee, Valley Head & Mentone, AL. We stopped for breakfast at the Downtown Choo-Choo Diner in Valley Head. Say hello to our new friends next time you’re there . . . the owner/chef lady owns a B&B just up the street. At breakfast we planned a future ride and solidified our friendship. After another 180 miles, we say good-byes in Dallas,
GA. Until next month, when we ride again!
Love to Ride, Ride to Love!
