DIRECTOR'S REPORT
HOG Family
I want to take a moment and thank John Riggs for his excellent article in last month’s Hogwash. Big John, we wish you well and continued success in your recovery. Sonja, we’re thinking of you also as you nurse John back to complete health. Not lost in John’s article, as people thought about his health, was the fact that HOG family members did all they could to help out. This goes on all the time in the family. Just a couple of weeks ago two of our members had an accident and damaged heir bikes. They needed help in taking care of the bikes while they concentrated on their injuries and medical attention. Once again members stepped up and took care of the bikes by getting them to H-D of Atlanta for repairs. This was one less issue for the injured members to worry about. (Although Roadside Assistance has come in handy for many members on several occasions, they really let us down this time.) Just one more story of how being a HOG family member has its advantages.
Hurricane Katrina
Last month I mentioned briefly that our Chapter and the Dealership would be collecting donations to go to a Dealership and Chapter in Louisiana. Donations are still being accepted. Whether you have anything (many of them have nothing left right now) that these people could use or you want to make a financial donation just drop it by the dealership and put it in Rene’s office. If you need to know how to make out a check for a donation contact Rene’. As of the other day all that had been collected is a couple of bags of used clothes. C’mon, we can do better than that! Read the above article again if need be.
Charity Rides
As a reminder to members, our chapter officially supports two charities. The Muscular Dystrophy Association and the SHARE House a local battered women and children’s shelter. There are many other charities that we support by participating in their rides, providing their flyers and info to the members, and providing volunteers and help where needed.
The officers, as well as some of you members, receive several requests a week, yes a week from someone asking our chapter to coordinate a ride to raise money for their special interests and/or needs. Although we would like to help everyone, there is no way we could handle all the requests. In addition I want to caution members who agree to help someone try to organize a ride. First if you have never done something like this check with someone who has. Don’t overestimate the level of participation especially on a first time event. I have had experience where an organizer claimed they would have more than 500 bikes show up, but then reality set in on the day of the ride. It was beautiful day to ride and less than 25 bikes showed up. They lost money. Be realistic with the amount you will charge for an entry fee. You have to think about your escorts, where will the ride end up, what is the route, will there be food, a raffle, etc. The list goes on and on. Again before you commit yourself and give unrealistic expectations of what your chapter and the motorcycling public will do, talk to someone with experience in this area. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating not helping out. If that was the case, MDA, Care for Cops, and March of Dimes would not be the rides they are today. Just be realistic and informed.
Ride for Fun.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Thanks to everyone who came out in support of the March of Dimes Ride Save Babies. Our Chapter finished 2nd in overall money raised by Clubs and as a combined group we raised more than $300,000. Also, I would like to congratulate our members who placed in the March of Dimes Bike Show Finals.

Chilly Weather is upon Us
Chilly weather is vastly approaching. Most of us have probably already broken out the cold weather riding gear by now. I just want to remind everyone about some things to remember.
The need to dress in layers is a must. When leaving home at eight o’clock in the morning it can be quite chilly. As it warms up, it’s nice to just take off what you need to be comfortable. After all if you’re not comfortable when riding your bike, you most likely won’t want to get your bike out till it warms up and you’ll miss out on some of the greatest ride time of the year. With all the leaves changing and falling off the trees, the smell of autumn in the air is my favorite time to ride, as long as I dress appropriately for it.
I mentioned the leaves falling off the trees. We need to be careful. Leaves on a road, especially if they are wet at all can be like driving on ice. So if you run up on some try to break before you get there and get off of your brakes and ride as straight through them as you possibly can.
Don’t forget to check your tire pressure. The upper limit should be stamped on the side of your tire. For the longest life of your tires, this is the recommended limit that you should keep theminflated too. It will state psi, which is pounds per square inch. We are all guilty of not checking our tire pressure enough. Over time it is normal for a tire to lose about 1 pound per month and as it gets colder it can change about 1 pound for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of change. So, as the temperature goes down so does your tire pressure. If you haven’t checked your tire pressure since the beginning of the summer, say seven months ago and the temperature has dropped from 90 degrees to 50 degrees. If your tire had around 38 psi seven months ago, it is possible that it only has about 27 psi in it today. At 27 psi, your tire is becoming severely under inflated and dangerous!
I want you to know that if your tire has lost air like this there is nothing wrong with your tire, this is normal. What I am trying to illustrate to you is the importance of checking your tire pressure, especially as it gets colder. Checking your tire pressure on a weekly routine is a very good habit to get into. However, normally the more you ride the less air pressure you will lose.
In short, dress in layers, always “keep your eyes on the road,” and don’t forget to check your tire pressure.
Until next time, ride safe. Be sure to take your time, enjoy the ride and always “keep the shiny side up.”

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,
www.atlantahog.com or the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

Your E-mail and the Chapter
Here we are at the close of another year. It is time to start thinking about renewing your membership for the chapter. I hope every member will renew. With this thought, I would like to encourage everyone to include their E-mail address on their form. All the people who help to make this chapter what it is, is a volunteer. It’s hard to schedule the calendar so far in advance without expecting a cancellation every now and then. Sometimes this happens after the HOGWASH is published. This is where your E-mail address comes into play. If there is a cancellation or change within a couple of days before the ride or event, we can get B.K to send out an E-mail to all the members. This makes it easier to make sure anyone wanting to participate is aware of any changes that may have been made. If you don’t want to give out your personal E-mail, go to Yahoo or Hotmail and create an address so you will stay informed. After all, the goal of the officers and the road captains is to keep members informed. Don’t forget about the Hotline 770-908-3435. This number is used if a change is made the day of the ride. I hope this will help you to stay informed and I look forward to seeing all of you at the chapter events.

ROAD TRIP
The Ride to NoWhere
I am leading a ride on November 12. We will meet at 10am and leave at 10:30am. This will be a 3-pig ride. Due to the uncertainty of November weather, I have decided not to make a decision. I will have a few ideas, but I will let you (the members)decide where we go. So come prepared for anything. It may be a short ride or it could be a long ride. Ultimately, it will be up to the group. I hope to see you all there.
Chris Robey, Road Captain
BE PREPARED for the 2nd Annual Lookout Mtn./Signal Mtn. ride Sunday, November 6, 2005.
This will be a 3-pig, 250 plus mile ride through the hills and valleys of NW GA. We will travel some of the great roads from the 1st Annual, but many new/better ones as well. We will stop to see hang gliders on Lookout Mtn. followed by lunch at the quaint Lookout Café. After lunch, we cross into TN and follow the River, along the base of Signal Mtn., TN. (We may stop for frogs legs.) Then up the north face to see the Space House and down the "W.” From here, we will travel back up Signal Mtn. using Corral Rd., across it’s top and spiral down into Soddy Daisy,TN, where the ride officially ends.
GUARANTEED to be a Ride you won't want to miss . . . and besides . . . remember that old tune . . . "It’s my birthday and I'll ride if I want to, ride if I want to . . . you could ride to . . . " Well it's MY BIRTHDAY! Come join me for a great day in the saddle.
Live to Ride, Ride to Live!

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Chickamauga Battlefield Recap
It was a beautiful brisk morning as I threw my leg across the saddle at 8:00 a.m., with my leather jacket on. By 10:00 a.m. that morning, after a cup of Joe and a fat-free sausage/egg/cheese biscuit from the QT, I removed the leather as riders began to pull in. There were Chris, Skeeter, Rose, Joe and Mark. By KSU ( Kick Stands Up, NOT Kennesaw State University) there were 13 bikes and 15 friends. After reviewing the hand signals and route, we stopped to remember those who involuntarily and others who courageously gave their lives for our FREEDOM. Yes, FOUR years had passed since the 9/11 incident.
With thanks in our heart and smiles on our faces we headed west on Hwy. 278 around Cedartown to Hwy. 100 N and into Summerville. At Summerville, we picked up Tom and Tommye Sigerfoos. They too were smiling having traversed the gentle slopes from Blue Ridge to Summerville. At Summerville, we headed west on Hwy. 48 to Hwy. 157 N taking us up Lookout Mountain where we quickly found Daugherty Gap Rd. In keeping with my reputation for twisties and switchbacks, we traveled single file down the eastern slope of Lookout Mountain . . . a beautiful tree-capped road which challenged many of us. As we made it to the bottom, we were greeted with a wonderful green valley of farms and a tranquil ride to the Cove Farm Country Store. Here we sat in rockers on the porch and picnic tables in the grass enjoying our friendships, encouraging Rose to ride more twisties and thanking our Father for his many gifts . . . this is a special site I will gladly share with all of you on another ride. While it was difficult to leave such a great stop, we managed to make our way along McFarland Road North of the Battlefield.
By this time it was well past lunch hour and my "friends" had a challenging look in their eyes. FOOD was the call. So we headed north on Hwy. 27/1 to El Matador at Hwy. 27 and Route 2 for a Mexican meal. After lunch, some folks headed north to see family in TN, others South to homeand the remainder of us went to the Battlefield Visitor's Center. By 4:30 p.m. it was time to ride. Mark, Skeeter and I selected the backroads across John's Mountain and through some great farm pasture. Mark helped plow a row with his Softail. After a brief stop and a pleasant smile from some folks on the porch, we continued south. At 7:30 p.m. the last of us parted ways longing for more sunny days!
Live Free, Ride Free.
