DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Earlier this year in this column, I asked you to reflect on your riding experiences from the past year and to consider what your goals were for this year. Well, we’ve passed the halfway point for the year now and I’ve been thinking about what goals I set and what rides I had hoped to do and what I’ve accomplished so far. What about you? What have you done so far? Have you been to Bike Week in Daytona, Laconia, Sturgis, Panama City, or Myrtle Beach? Maybe you’ve only been around the block, rode around town, whatever. Have you ridden everywhere you wanted or could? With all this rain we’ve had lately it’s been kind of frustrating trying to get in a good ride. It seems like every time I get the bike out to ride somewhere along the way I’m going to get wet. Just remember that each day that goes by is a day you can’t get back. So take every opportunity you can and make those dreams happen.
I celebrated some milestones, some dreams if you will in my own riding life this year. Five years ago I had never even been on a motorcycle. But I got that bug that many of you have been bitten by. I began with taking riding lessons and the day I finished in July of 2000 I bought a new Fat Boy. Since then I have ridden to Sturgis, as well as around much of this great country of ours. I survived the Harley-Davidson Police Motorcycle Certification Course as well as the Harley Experienced Riders Course. I taught Terri how to ride and then she passed the Riders Edge Course and bought herself a 2001 Fat Boy. On a recent trip Terri passed 35,000 miles and I passed 60,000 miles. To some that’s a lot of miles in five years, to others it’s not much. But to me it’s a lot of memories. Recently a couple of more milestones were surpassed. Brad told his Mom and I that he was tired of us having all the fun riding and all he got to do was sit on the back. He decided he wanted to ride his own. So after clearing it with his kidney doctor, we were off to take Honda Dirt Bike riding lessons. Brad now has his first motorcycle and I have a dirt bike and we go ride and make memories. A couple of weeks ago Terri’s dad completed the Riders Edge Course and then bought himself a new Harley. At 72 years of age, Robert Lester has joined the Harley family. Father and daughter took their first ride together and a whole new world of dreams, goals and memories have begun.
That’s the Harley lifestyle, the Harley family. You never know where it will take you. I hope you enjoy your Harley life as much as I’ve enjoyed mine so far.
Ride for Fun.

MOD Ride
October will be here before we know it! PLEASE mark your calendars now for Sunday, October 2, 2005. That is the date of this year’s March of Dimes Ride to Save Babies. If you haven’t already, take a few minutes to send out an email to friends, co-workers and neighbors asking them to make a tax deductible contribution in sponsoring you on this ride. Freddie Arnold was at
our July Chapter Meeting and shared with us ways that he has been successful in obtaining donations. If you are interested, I have sample letters that he supplied that he sends out to businesses, as well as Thank You letters he sends out afterwards. I will be happy to email you copies. We can make such a difference – PLEASE join me.
Thank you.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Understanding Car and Truck Drivers
Since we all probably drive a car and/or a truck from time to time when we are not riding our motorcycles, I thought it would be a good idea to go over some safety tips for ourselves on recognizing motorcycles on the highways and byways. Realizing the way most motorists look at us can help us realize what we need to be paying attention to in order to keep from getting into a bad situation.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation published these “Ten Things All Car and Truck Drivers Should Know About Motorcycles.”
1. There is a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road, and some drivers don’t “recognize” a motorcycle; they ignore it (usually unintentionally). Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection.
2. Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle’s speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.
3. Because of its small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots (door/roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc.). Take an extra moment to thoroughly check traffic, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections.
4. Because of its small size a motorcycle may seem to be moving faster than it really is. Don’t assume all motorcyclists are speed demons.
5. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say three or four seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.
6. Turn signals on a motorcycle usually are not self-canceling, thus some riders, (especially beginners) sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle’s signal is for real.
7. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them.
8. Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle’s better characteristics, especially at slower speeds and with good road conditions, but don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way.
9. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. Allow more following distance behind a motorcycle because it can’t always stop “on a dime.”
10. When a motorcycle is in motion, don’t think of it as a motorcycle; think of it as a person.
If we keep these quick tips in our mind as we are tooling down the road on our motorcycles, we can possibly predict what a motorist might do before they do it. This will help us with our reaction time. Allowing us to respond sooner to what could turn into a bad situation if we had not been paying attention.
Lets all make sure that we too are looking out for our brothers and sisters and giving them the same courtesies that we like to have when we are on two wheels.
Until next time, ride safely. Be sure to take your time, enjoy the ride and always “keep the shiny side up.”

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,

ROAD TRIP
Guidestones, September 11, 2005
Join me on a ride to the northeast side of town. We travel to The Georgia Guidestones, Elberton's most unusual granite monument. It poses a mystery for the numerous visitors who visit the site seven miles north of Elberton on Georgia Highway 77. They carry a philosophical message providing "guides" for the preservation of mankind. Known as the "Stonhenge of America" the Guidestones are mysterious in origin. No one knows the identity of a group of sponsors who
provided specifications for the 19-foot high monument. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. and leave at 10:30 a.m. from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. It will be a two-pig ride.

Civil War Historians ...Chickamauga Battlefield Ride
On Sunday, September 18, we will ride the western slopes and valleys of north Georgia to Ft. Oglethorpe, GA, home of the Chickamauga Battlefield. One of the large CW battles won by the Union General Sherman on his march to Atlanta. Ever wonder why it is referred to as Hotlanta? Sherman torched it...and everything else on the way. We will ride GA highways, 278, 100, 114, 337, 193 and enter the park from the west on beautiful tree lined McFarland Rd. (see HOGTALES picture for National H.O.G. Chattanooga). Ft. Oglethorpe is north of Dalton, GA
and south of Chattanooga, TN. Once we arrive, you can view the 360 degrees slide show of the battle, tour the park, continue to ride over Lookout Mountain and of course...eat. I will provide some eating options upon arrival. Others may wish to return home.
I look forward to leading another GREAT RIDE in the land of the FREE!

ROAD TRIP RECAP
7/23/05 Impromptu Ride Recap
It was a beautiful day for a ride. With a change of Road Captains and no particular place to go, we had 14 bikes and an open agenda. After meeting at HDA, we decided to head to the mountains for some cooler air (not sure that exists anywhere). We headed up toward Cloudland and into Trenton. Our first stop in Trenton was intended for Larry’s restaurant. They were closed for vacation til August. We were told Randy’s was the place. As we searched for our new eating-place, we confused Randy’s Pawn Shop as a restaurant. Then we ran upon the real Randy’s and found some good eats. Later we broke into three groups to head for home. The ”run away already married bride” group continued on north running away from home. The highway group that intended to take I-75 south out of Lafayette, apparently missed their turn twice, as they passed the third group twice on their quest for the highway short route. The third group headed back via the back roads and over the mountains again. Thanks to all for being so flexible on this ride. David you were missed. My thanks and great appreciation to my co-captain, Wendy Hawkins, for assisting in the route and to Joe Tesar for riding the sweep position. You both made the ride enjoyable for everyone.
Diana Bodden, Road Captain
Dillard House Recap
It was a great day for a ride. Maybe not everyone thought so, but some of the brave and fearless arrived in the rain and were ready for the day, rain or shine. With K.C.'s and Andy's great enthusiasm and everyone still eager for a ride we slipped into our rain gear and headed out in the mist to show those Riders Edge folks how it’s done! We hit some heavy patches of rain on our way thru Chatsworth, but it slowed down the closer we got toward our destination. We arrived on schedule for lunch at the Dillard House and met up with Windy and Hawk who caged it up for the day. The ride home was dry and enjoyable. Thanks to everyone, it was a very nice day and I enjoyed the company and conversation. Thank you Andy Andreson for riding sweep. It was nice to know you were there watching out for us.
Diana Bodden, Road Captain
Butler’s Mill Recap
The food at Butler’s Mill lived up to expectations. It was delicious! From the homemade ice cream in a bucket on ice in a tub, Sunday fried chicken, and strawberry cobbler, it was all there and all you wanted. It's really easy to hurt yourself here! There were nine of us on seven bikes to enjoy the beautiful, easy, country Sunday morning ride...very nice. Thank you Gary for riding
sweep for me today. Thank you to all who joined me. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. A beautiful Sunday, a wonderful Harley, good roads, good food and good people to enjoy it with...what more could one ask for? Thanks again.
Ride today like you want to be able to ride tomorrow.
