DIRECTOR'S REPORT
At the May meeting we had a meal provided and to get the meal you had to fill out a small card with some information. We asked a couple of questions and then asked that attendees write down any suggestions they had for making the Chapter better. We asked "what do you like about the Chapter?" and "What do you not like?" The following is a summary of some of the responses. As far as what people like about the Chapter, the most common response was the variety of rides, the number of rides, the friendships that had been formed and the camaraderie that members share. Most people like the new meeting format. They like that the meetings are shorter and more exciting. The longest meeting so far this year has been 48 minutes. They like the new power point presentation and the music. Now for what people don't like. A majority of people don't like
the lack of participation from the membership at the meetings and some of the events/rides, etc. They want to know why we don't have a building to meet in (especially during the cold months) and why we don't provide meals anymore. Actually there was not that much focus on things members don't like. There were several good ideas and suggestions that were listed and your board will look at instituting some of those. I was somewhat confused by a couple of the cards.
One read like this: Like - more excitement at meeting. Dislike - meeting too quiet. People are bored. Another card was similar in response. To try and put some of these items in perspective, in past years the dealership provided a one year membership with the purchase of a new bike and the chapter would have as many as a thousand or more members on paper, but not active. The dealership made the decision last year to discontinue that practice. We have to appreciate their
position. To provide everyone who bought a new bike with a membership became very expensive and the dealership is first and foremost a business. It was a business management decision. Chris wanted the Chapter members to become more active and giving away a membership did not necessarily guarantee participation. We now have approximately 480 members so we don't have the income that we used to have. The dealership also provided the meals at the meetings. The cost of those meals sometimes would be more than a thousand dollars. The Chapter decided to provide a meal at the May meeting and we advertised it. We only had 54 members sign in for the meeting (that includes officers and road captains). As far as participation goes at the meetings it does not seem to matter if we have a thousand members or five hundred. Like most every other HOG Chapter have about 10% who show up for a meeting. We will have rides and 35 bikes show up and we have rides and only two bikes show up. The Road Captain never knows what their turnout will be. It’s the same for Chapter events. The bottom line is this. We have a good Chapter and a good Dealership. We have good Officers,
Road Captains and Volunteers. We have an active Chapter for those who participate. Could we be better? Sure we can but we need your help. The same few can’t do it all. Thanks to those who provided ideas and suggestions. We will work on getting better. Hope to see you soon at a chapter activity.
The Blake Gammill "Ultimate Sacrifice Ride" Recap
Man, what a turnout! For the few who missed it you missed a spectacular event. More important than the event itself thought, was the reason for all those people gathering together at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta that Sunday afternoon to remember someone special. For those who aren't familiar with it, here's the story. Blake Gammill was a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed in the line of duty while executing an arrest warrant as part of Douglas County’s SERT Team. Blake has two beautiful little girls and this ride was one of many events that have been planned to raise money for his daughters and their future.
The ride was well represented by the Douglas County Sheriffs Department, Douglas County citizens, Atlanta HOG Chapter and many others. How many people were there in all? We will never know. We do know there were 853 registered participants for the ride. We also know there were a lot more bikes than that. Many people did not register but just wanted to be a part of the ride. Many bikes joined in along the route. An estimated $40,000.00 was raised for the girls. The Ride procession was a measured 8 miles long. All in all it was one spectacular event. The following people from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department are to be commended for their tireless efforts and many hours they put into this Ride. Wade Rogers, Danny North, Debra Woody and Brian Camp. Thanks to Douglas County Deputies in patrol cars, City of Douglasville, Villa Rica, and Cobb County Police Motor Officers for leading the Ride.
I have to say without the effort put forth by the Harley-Davidson of Atlanta employees and Atlanta HOG Chapter, the Ride may not have gone so smoothly. I cannot say “Thank You” enough for all the effort put forth by our members who showed up to volunteer. Our Chapter’s task was organizing the parking of the bikes and getting them all out onto the roadway from the
parking lots in an organized manner. We also helped with registration and setting up trash cans. We had Road Captains and members at the front of the Ride, in the middle and at the back of the Ride just in case anyone had any problems. We did all kinds of stuff to ensure a well-coordinated ride.
Thanks to Chris Robey and Terri Varnum for doing the pre-ride that morning just to make sure the route was clear. Thanks to the following volunteers: Roger and LeAnn Smith, John Morgan, Dave Trefzger and Michelle Clark, Moon and Sue Peters, Rich and Terry Lalama, Ed and Linda Heck, Gary Langmaid, Diana Bodden, Gary Griffin, Ron, Pam and Kelsey Minton, Scott and Corolla Vandiver, Gene Bachman and his daughter Sarah, Greg Cammons, Gene Williams and Mike and Sherry Cole. I know that I probably left someone out and for that I apologize. I want to recognize all of the volunteers, so if I missed including you in this list please let me know. Once again, thank you all for your help. To those of you who I asked to do something and then explained what it was I wanted you to do, and then reexplained it two or three more times, well I’m sorry. I have a habit sometimes of repeating myself and I was a little stressed. Thanks to
Rich who finally said "Tom we got it."
Ready for Deployment:
Chapter member Gene Bachman wants to announce that his son Gene Bachman III has received orders that he will be shipping out to Iraq on July 23. Gene is due to be in Iraq for at least one year. He has already begun making plans for a V-Rod when he returns in country. We wish Gene safe travel. Our prayers and thoughts will be with the Bachman family, as they are with all those who serve that we may have the freedoms we cherish in this country. Thank You Gene,
Godspeed.

MDA Ride
Atlanta Chapter HOG placed 2nd in total funds raised by HOG Chapters! We exceeded last year's amount by $1000.00. Thanks to those diehards that showed up for the MDA Ride and for everyone that participated in the fund-raising events prior to the ride. Our continued efforts give hope to those who are stricken by these diseases that they may someday walk. For those of you who were at our May meeting and had the privilege of meeting Jacob Walker - you should have seen him on this ride. Jacob got to take his first motorcycle ride. He was strapped on the back and was grinning from ear to ear. Thank You!
MDA Bike Wash
Well … Where were you? Rene, Tom, Brad, my oldest son Brian and I were the only ones that showed up to wash (near the end Diana’s nephew Chris helped out). BK and Dirt stopped by for moral support. We only had six bikes show up to be washed. We had some donations and along with the bikes raised $94.00. Thank you to my boys who had to spend the day doing volunteering for the chapter - although they would probably have rather been doing something
else.

Flying Past
Hope everyone is enjoying the summer heat. It seems like just last week we were wishing for the summer to get here so we could get out and do some riding. The winter months never seem to go fast enough, but I have to say that they are “flying past,” faster and faster every year.
“Flying past,” that’s a good way to get into this month’s topic. I want to talk about times we need to consider “slowing down.”
The most dangerous place on a motorcycle is at intersections. Whether you are on a two lane or a six-lane road you need to be aware of what is around you. You need to keep your eyes moving when you are approaching an intersection. Just because no one has a turn signal on, doesn’t mean they are going to keep going straight. A very large percentage of people today don’t even
know what a turn signal is used for. A motorcycle can split a single lane into three sections, left third, middle third and right third. Put yourself in the best position that you think you can so people can see you and that you can see everything that is going on around you. Many times if you are not too sure of what some of the people in front of you, beside you or the people going in
the opposite direction are going to do, just slow down a little. Cover your controls (front brake and clutch with all four fingers) so your reaction time is quicker if you need to respond to someone that is not paying as much attention as they should be.
Not that I want to bore anyone with statistics, but 40% of all single motorcycle/vehicle accidents (more simply put, no cars involved) happen in turns. The rider does not slow their bike down to what we call a proper entry speed before the turn. They are in the turn and then they think they are going to fast! Your heart starts racing, you get a death grip on the handle bars and you start thinking “I screwed up this time,” we’ve all been there. In the middle of a turn is not the time to overreact! The last thing you want to do is to roll off your throttle quickly. This destabilizes your bike and it will stand up in the middle of the turn and will probably send you and your bike for repairs. What you want to do is press firmly on the hand grip in the direction of the turn you are in while maintaining a steady throttle, where throttle is or “very” slowly back off. Many people don’t realize that you can practically lay that bike over and your tires will not give away and you’ll roll right through the turn. You “have to” press on your hand grip in the direction of the turn, lean that bike over and “trust” in your tires.
More statistics, almost 50% of all fatal motorcycle accidents are alcohol related. Fact is, one drink starts to impair your judgment. The question is, how much impairment are you willing to gamble with? That’s why HOG states that once we arrive at our destination (which is normally lunch) that the official ride is over. If someone at that point wants to indulge in an adult
beverage, HOG will not be responsible for what may happen after that. It doesn’t matter what form of alcohol you choose to consume, “TWO WHEELS AND ALCOHOL DOES NOT MIX.” I could tell you some stories of myself that I am not very proud of today. Let me just say that I have learned from my mistakes and I am very fortunate that I am here today. If you choose to drink, don’t get on your motorcycle. That doesn’t mean getting a ride home with someone else who has been drinking. Get a taxi or just stay put till you sober up. That takes approximately one hour per drink. No matter what you do, coffee, exercise, take a cold shower, your liver will not process alcohol any faster.
Well, that’s all for this month. Until next time, be safe, enjoy the ride and always keep the shiny side up.

Volunteers
H.O.G. is an organization that is for and about riders and riding. As good as that sounds no event or activity we set out to do will happen without volunteers.
Why do people volunteer?
Their friends volunteer.
They want to meet people.
They want to contribute.
They want to be part of something.
They want to have fun.
They care about the cause or organization.
Our officers are volunteers. Our road captains are volunteers. Volunteers orchestrate our meetings. Volunteers accomplish our efforts for SHARE House and MDA. Sometimes we need a cook. We may need help setting up or dismantling something. Sometimes we need someone to sort items for SHARE House. Sometimes we need help with the newsletter. The list goes on.
I would like to challenge each member to consider what he or she has done to lend a hand toward the growth and well being of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Thanks.

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!

Jack Daniel’s Update---Last Call?
Back in October the chapter began trying to purchase a barrel of “single barrel” whiskey from the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, TN and to offer each of the 233 or so bottles that will come from that as Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. 20th Year Commemorative bottles, as our chapter celebrates its 20th year anniversary in September of this year. The single barrel whiskey is the smoothest of all the whiskies produced by Jack Daniels.
So far we have pre sold about 97 bottles and we need to pre sell the remaining 136 before we can place our order. The chapter had considered the idea of going ahead with the purchase without pre-selling all 233 bottles, but legally there is no way to do so if the chapter is to later recover its funds from the members----to do so would constitute “selling liquor,” which is something neither the chapter nor dealership is allowed to do.
Therefore we need to pre sell these remaining 136 bottles or else scratch the project altogether. Each bottle will come with an inscribed medallion around the neck and additionally the chapter will also receive the barrel itself, signed by Jimmy Bedford, the Master Distiller in Lynchburg. This is one time opportunity to own a truly unique chapter memento. Each bottle sells for $43.00 and $5.00 of this will go toward the SHARE House, one of our local charities.
If you are interested, please see Rene and leave with her a check for $43.00 per bottle you desire; also, there is no limit on the number of bottles any one member can purchase. Again this is a one time opportunity to obtain a very unique piece of chapter memorabilia and help out the SHARE House at the same time.

Dyno Drags Recap
A great time was had by all at the DYNO Drags. I hate it for any of you who missed this event. Glenn, Nick, Andy, Elmo and I met at HD of Atlanta and headed off for a day of fun and excitement. I was a bit nervous so upon arrival at Killer Creek HD I sought out an adult beverage to calm my nerves. As the contest began, I stood there and thought, “Why did that idiot choke his bike on the green light-why was he not paying attention?” Well, after listening to Nick and Glenn, I soon realized that running on a drum (dyno meter) is radically different from running on asphalt. As each bike made its run, we watched a few that were not strapped in properly and tried to shoot off the drum. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but there were a few anxious moments.
It soon became evident that Atlanta HOG had came to this event to win! Everyone had won in their division and now it was my turn on the drum. (The butterflies in my stomach were now galloping horses…) My biggest fear was “Red Lighting.” My first trial was a dismal 136 mph
and a 10.30 time. I stalled the bike on my second run. (The galloping horses were now giant bulldozers plowing their way through my stomach…) My coaches informed me that if I continued riding “my” way—I was doomed. (Great positive support!) I listened to my coaches’ advice and on my third run I ran 146 mph with a 9.82 second elapsed time! My competitor busted the fork in his transmission on his run. (Elmo kept hollering to remind all of us to hold our clutch in until the drum stops… obviously my competitor did not heed this advice...)
Finally, our fiends from South Cobb threw in another guy to try and embarrass me (one of those experienced “drum freaks”). I turned in a smoking 9.71 ET at 149.75 mph! That will give him something to think about until next year when Atlanta HOG will host the event on our turf.
So far all of those guys who are my age and are comfortable on their ULTRA’S with their nice stereos- that’s cool, but remember the movie “Middle-Aged Crazy?” Go see Chris Houghton and have him build you a play toy like mine. Then ride it for a month or so and tell me that you are
not bitten by the bug. By the way, mine has a stereo also. Just ask Nick about my music selection. Till the next time the drum rolls…Ride Safe.

Butler’s Mill Ride
I'd like to invite ya'll to ride with me to Butler's Mill in Alabama for lunch on July 17. We'll meet at 9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. This is about 60-65 miles and is about a one and half to two hour ride. It's an all you can eat buffet with a bucket of homemade ice cream sitting in a number two washtub of ice. They have several different
cobblers. They serve delicious fried chicken and catfish with plenty of veggies to go with them. They also have BBQ, salad bar, roast beef, country fried steak and the list goes on! I promise you will not go away hungry! It's a really nice country ride out Hwy. 166 to Hwy. 5 to Whitesburg. We'll take a short break and then on into Bucktown, Alabama where we'll pick up Hwy. 100 to the left for a short way before it becomes Hwy. 48. Then we'll turn right on Hwy. 92 and follow it into Butler’s Mill. The parking lot is gravel but I've never seen or heard of anyone having a problem with it. It is well packed. Pay attention to what you're doing and stay off that front brake and you'll be fine. I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Ride today like you want to be able to ride tomorrow...

I have 20 rooms blocked and you will need to make reservations before July 1. I know this is going to be a short notice but the Tapoco Lodge dropped the ball on our reservations just like the hotel in Helen. I could not get this out in last months HOGWASH. ROAD TRIP RECAP
Charleston Ride Recap
I hope that everyone who went on our annual Charleston trip enjoyed themselves. We had some first timers this year; in addition we had two couples who were guests also join us. (Hal and Sharon and Ted and Terry) They provided plenty of entertainment. The weather was great except on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. when we encountered rain showers as predicted by the weatherman. Some of us got soaked on the way to see the Angel Oak Tree – but it was well worth it. Once again, if you have never gone on an overnighter you should definitely do it. You have the opportunity to get to know members that you might not have had a chance to talk much with. I had met Jay Sims at the Chapter Meetings but had not met his wife Linda and daughter Samantha who joined us on the trip. I just hope that they will go on future trips after
having endured our group. What’s that saying … “What happens in Charleston stays in Charleston” Linda was a true sport. New nicknames were given – Grumpus, Stinky Feet, Goober and Gomer. Bud Hathcox led us around Charleston, and BK provided lunch and dinner suggestions that were great. Thanks to all that joined me.

Macon, GA Music Hall of Fame Recap
Maybe it was because it was Memorial Day weekend or maybe our members just weren’t interested in riding south. Nevertheless, Tom, Todd Graham, Artie and Sharon Alvarez and I headed down some great country back roads to Macon. We enjoyed a country buffet at Willows on Fifth, then took in the GA Music Hall of Fame. It turned out to be a great day for riding.

Smith House Recap
The day started off cloudy and a bit damp. By the time we reached Talking Rock to meet up with Tom, Tommye, Big John and Sonya the sun was peeking out. It was still cool as we headed across SR-136. We got to the Smith House about 20 minutes early but they still got us in quickly. The food was great and the service was excellent. If you have not been to the Smith House, you got to go check it out. The ride took about four hours and was 148 miles. I would like to thank David Trefzger for being middle captain, Diana Bodden for riding sweep and Scott and Corolla Vandiver for taking the pictures.

Backwoods Recap
Well, considering all the rain we have had lately, I feel very fortunate to have been able to get this ride in without getting wet! We did it and the weather goddess smiled upon us. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon ride. For a change we had no mechanical problems, everything was just as it should've been. This was about a 50-mile ride and it took us about one hour and 20
minutes. We had 15 riders on nine bikes which was a good sized group. Thank you Diana Bodden for riding sweep. We had a good mix of familiar faces as well as some new faces that will hopefully become familiar too. The food was good, the company was good, and the weather was good, what else could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon dinner ride?
Ride today like you want to be able to ride tomorrow...
