DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Family
FAMILY: One of the definitions provided by Webster’s dictionary for the word family is; "a
group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation".
During the month of March, I like many of your saw many families come together for various
reasons. Some were immediate family, close and distant relatives, etc. and some were like us in
the Harley family. A group of people united by a common affiliation. We saw those on both sides
of the issue in the Terri Shiavo case. We saw the Law Enforcement Family come together over
the death of Douglas County Deputy Blake Gammill and the death and injuries to the Fulton
County Deputies. We saw the Legal Family come together over the death of a Judge and a Court
Recorder. We've seen a world of many religions come together during the illness and subsequent
death of the Pope. Civic organizations, churches, boy scouts, girl scouts, motorcyclists all
gathered at weekly or monthly meetings. Again this year hundreds of H.O.G. Chapter Officers
from around the world will be traveling to the annual Primary Officers Training (POT) that will
take place in various locations around the US. This is one more family you choose to belong too.
Members of this family come from all over, not just geographically but those who own a Harley
are a diverse group. The differences are many, financial, race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, the
list goes on. You have your speed demons, cruisers, those who love the twisties, and those that
think every road should be straight as an arrow. Those that won't ride if it's cold or there's a cloud
in the sky. Others who say damn the weather "I'm riding!” Those who like to ride in a group and
some who think more than one is too many. As diverse as our Harley family is there is always at
least one common thread.
This past month Terri and I camped out down at Atlanta Motor Speedway and went to the
NASCAR Races, all three. It was Terri's first, other than a rain out last year. Right from the start
there were some problems. We got there on Friday night and set up the camper. The generator
that had cranked on the first pull at home now wouldn't start. Then I discovered that the camper
battery was dead. Frustrated I finally said let's just go watch the truck race. Besides it’s not going
to be that cold tonight. Famous last words. It got cold but we survived, the next day I work on the
generator, swap out batteries from the truck, didn't think about that the night before. Anyway this
guy who had pulled in to camp next to us walks over to see if he could be of any assistance.
Before long he had gone to another campsite borrowed the one size spark plug socket I didn't
have and we got the generator running. Then on to Wal-Mart for a new battery. We now had
lights and heat. The guy’s name is Hal and he is now Terri's best friend. He ate well that
weekend. As we were becoming acquainted and beginning a friendship that I expect to last for
many years, Hal told us that he too rode a Harley. In fact he buys a new one every couple of years
because he puts so many miles on them. He is a H.O.G. member. We told him about our Chapter
and the different rides and activities we plan and invited him to join us on a ride. He says that he
prefers to ride in small numbers instead of the typical weekend group rides. However, he has
done a couple of the H.O.G. Posse Rides. This is where he met a couple of guys from around the
country and they now get together for long trips. Hal has ridden to Alaska and around it a couple
of times. Hal just turned out to be a good guy. We have already begun making plans for riding
together and attending some more NASCAR races.
The point of all this is that we are by definition a “Family”. Whether we want to ride in groups or with just with a couple of friends, take a short trip or go across the country. Owning a Harley
opens the door to the family known as H.O.G. Whether you are a very active member or rarely
participate in the Chapter's events you have that availability.
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. currently has approximately 450 members. Everyone probably knows
someone who has not renewed their membership, or someone who just purchased a Harley. I
would ask that you take the time to speak to them and encourage them to join the Chapter or
renew their membership. Then, if you haven't been on a ride or to a meeting lately come join us
and see what your family has been up to.
There is a saying that you've probably seen on a T-shirt that says something like "We're like
family, the one's you like!” That's what H.O.G. is all about. You never know where you'll meet
one of these family members. It certainly was true when Hal introduced himself and offered to
help. Thanks Hal!
Ride for Fun.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Assistant Directors Report
We are finally getting into that great riding weather that we look forward to. Your Chapter
Officers and Road Captains are working hard to keep the calendar full with a variety of exciting
and fun rides. Come out and support your Chapter and have some fun.
In May I will be leading the following rides:
Charleston Trip
For those of you joining me on our Annual Charleston trip, we will be meeting at the dealership
at 8:00 a.m. and leaving at 8:30 a.m.. The route will be the same as last year, via the interstate.
Chapter member, Bud Hathcox will once again be our tour guide leading us through the beautiful
sites of Charleston. We will have various options of things to see and do and as we have done in
the past. We will have a dinner ride on Saturday night. If you haven’t been on an overnight trip
with the Chapter, this is definitely one you should consider.
Georgia Music Hall of Fame
I will be leading a ride on May 28, to Macon to visit the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. If we have
more than 10 people, we will receive a group rate of $6.00 per person, otherwise the cost of
admission is $8.00. There is a restaurant across from the Hall of Fame that we will be stopping
at for lunch. I hope you will join me.
Blake Gammill “The Ultimate Sacrifice Ride”
Harley-Davidson of Atlanta donated a Sportster that was raffled off at the Blake Gammill benefit
concert that took place at Lithia Springs High School in March. Travis Tritt was awesome, and
while his acoustic performance was great his down to earth comments about how our community
reaches out to those in need was truly heartwarming. Let’s show Blake’s little girls how supportive our H.O.G. Chapter is! Please come out for this ride on Sunday, May 22, 2005. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. and the ride leaves at 1:00 p.m.. The ride will leave and return to Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and will have a FULL POLICE ESCORT for the 55-60 mile ride. The cost is $25 per person and $40 for a couple. The price includes a T-shirt, pin and lunch.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Mentoring
Here we are, finally into the prime time for us to get out on a more regular basis and put some
miles on our bikes. While we’re out there, we have heads turning everywhere we go. People
hearing that great Harley-Davidson sound that make them look ‘ah hh’, wishing they could be out their feeling free, with the wind in their face. Having that big powerful Harley between their
legs and leaving their troubles behind for the day or maybe even the weekend. Have you ever
thought about what people start thinking, or feeling when they are finally able to afford that
Harley that they have been drooling over for such a long time? I can tell you. It’s the fear of the
unknown.
We take what we know so much for granted so many times and never really share it with anyone
or with the very few. Many of us have children, nieces and nephews that have looked at us in
ways that we didn’t realize. We have either been a positive influence in their lives or a negative
influence in their lives. In a sense we have been in a type of “Mentor Ship Program” and didn’t even know it.
Even if you have only been riding for a few months to maybe a year, you know more than that
person that is buying their Harley for the first time. Why do you think people walk up to you
when you’re pumping gas or wherever? They start talking to you about your bike while they
eyeball it up and down. They want to feel that Harley underneath them. It’s a passion that so
many people have but are afraid of stepping out and giving it a try.
YOU, each and everyone of you can help these people. We don’t have to say anything
extraordinary, or sound even like some kind of a rocket scientist. They want to just talk to you.
And YOU are full of wisdom. YOU can tell them how they need to visit the local HD dealer and
sit on all the different bikes. See/feel what is right for them. Tell them how there are so many
makes and models that they need to figure out what feels good to them. We all know that what
may be right for us, may not be right for them. But, it sure doesn’t stop there.
We all have experienced things we often share with one another that we need to be sharing with
these people in order to help them grow. Remember, that learning from other people’s mistakes
can often help us from making the same mistakes. It makes us all a safer, better motorcyclist.
Once a person makes that decision to buy that Harley that they have always dreamed about, “our work has just begun”. Many times it’s just the little things like talking to them about a Motorcycle Safety Class. I could go on and on about how we could help, “Mentor other
Motorcyclist”. When someone makes that decision to get on two wheels and start to enjoy life as
we know it, they’ve selected a unique and challenging form of transportation/recreation. It is up
to each of us to help them develop into a safe and responsible motorcyclist. Talk to them about
the mental and physical skills they will need to have. That riding is 90% more mental than
physical. Understanding that there is a level of risk involved. However, practicing safe riding
habits greatly reduces that risk.
I challenge all of you to be a “MENTOR”.
Until next time, be safe and always keep the shiny side up.

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter
had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of
rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa
Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let
us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead
and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other
motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new
people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!
Atlanta Chapter on Yahoo!
Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the
following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,

ROAD TRIP
Smith House Ride
On May 21, I will be leading a ride to the Smith House in Dahlonega. If you have never eaten
there, you can’t miss this ride. It’s an all you can eat, down home cooking, a family atmosphere restaurant. The trip is about 150 miles and all back roads. It will take about four and ½ hours with one planned rest/fuel stop in Adairsville. The ride will take us through Dallas, Cartersville,
Fairmount and then wind our way toward Dahlonega along Hwys. 53, 108, 136 and 19. We will
meet at the pavilion at HDA at 9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. The ride will officially end at the
Smith House. There are always several groups going in several different directions depending on
how you want to get home. So grab a light breakfast, fill the gas tank and I’ll see you all at 9:00
a.m.

Southern Highroads Trail Ride set for August 5-7
A quick year has flown by and it is approaching time for the Southern Highroads Trail Ride once
again. Hopefully this year the weather will be more cooperative as it has in years past and we’ll
get in the full amount of riding!
Also as in years past, due to factors involving safety and logistics, we must limit the size of this
ride so I am posting a sign up sheet at the dealership on the H.O.G. bulletin board on May 10.
Please sign up by May 25.
As a reminder, this is a 5-pig ride due to the length of the ride (700 miles + round trip) and the
fact that on days two and three it is almost totally curves that we will be riding. This is not a ride
for beginners! The ride features the Blue Ridge Parkway, NC Highway 28, a possible side trip on
the Dragon’s Tail and also the Cherohala Skyway. There are other local roads which are also
narrow and very curving in nature. Don’t forget to bring your leathers as we will traverse the
highest point on the Blue Ridge at some 6000 feet and in addition bring rain gear as on past trips
we have had rain somewhere along the way.
This ride is very scenic, and does offer some relief from the summer heat due to the elevated
areas we will ride through. For you map buffs, here is a detailed route:
Day 1: I-575/515 to Blue Ridge, GA then old US 76 to Blairsville, then US 129 to US 19/74 past
Andrews, NC; Wayah Road through the Nantahala Gorge into Franklin, NC
Day 2: US 64 from Franklin thru Highlands and Cashiers, NC to US 178 in Rosman, NC to SC
11 to US 276N into Brevard, NC. From Brevard, US 276 to the Blue Ridge Parkway to US
19/74S to the Bryson City area.
Day 3: NC 28 to NC 143 to the Cherohala Skyway to TN 68; TN 68 to GA 5 in McCaysville and
GA 5 back to GA 515/I-575.
SIGN UP PROCESS
Once again in the interest of safety and logistics, the ride will be limited to 30 motorcycles, not
including five road captains and me as ride leader. The sign up sheet will be posted on May 10 at
the shop and will come down on May 25 following which I will contact everyone with hotel
reservation information (rooms will average about $95 per night). Reservations must be made by
June 10, 2005. The sign up sheet will also contain several “stand by” slots in the event that one of the original 30 has to cancel out. The 30 slots are for motorcycles (i.e., riders) are limited to chapter members only. Guests, friends, etc., are limited to being passengers in order to accommodate as many chapter members as we can. If you must cancel, please contact me and I will contact the stand by folks—do not call a fellow member and give your slot away if you find you cannot make the ride after signing up.
What: Southern Highroads Trail Ride

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Fibber’s Ride Recap
We had a very enjoyable ride to Fibber's. If it had been a little warmer, we all would've enjoyed it
more. It did warm up after lunch and was very comfortable. We had 16 riders on 13 bikes
including three guests, which is a good sized group. There would've been two more riders and
one more bike, but Froggy's Road King's battery went south when he parked it at the shop before
the ride, sorry Froggy. We missed you. I was off slightly on my estimation of 90 miles from the
shop. It was actually right at 95 miles. I'd like to thank Pat DeLay for riding sweep and all who
rode with us. You did a very good job, even you Noel. It was my pleasure to lead ya'll on this ride
and I hope to lead many more in the future. I hope ya'll will join me. The food at Fibber's, as
usual, was delicious. I held back, only ate one full plate this time. Well yes, Sharon was sitting
next to me.
Ride today like you want to be able to ride tomorrow.
Steve Johnson, Road Captain
Loco's Ride Recap
Once again the weather men were wrong. It was supposed to be a sunny to partly cloudy day with
temps reaching around 60. It was actually very overcast and the temp felt more like the mid 40's.
But all in all it was a very good trip. We left the HDA with six bikes and eight hearty souls. This
was probably the smoothest ride I have lead so far. I want to thank Doug Claycomb for running
sweep. The ride took about two hours with a 20 minute rest stop and was 76 miles. Locos’ is
always a great place to eat and this was no exception, the food was great and they got us right in
and got our orders to us very quickly. For everyone who missed it just remember riding is fun no
matter what the time of year. Hope to see everyone on my next ride.

Covered Bridge Ride Recap
Oh what a beautiful day it was for a ride. We had 27 bikes for the ride. In order to make it a little
more enjoyable we took a roundabout way to get to Euharlee Covered Bridge. We took Braswell
Mountain Road and Knox Mountain Road by the Pizza Farm. Then up 113 to Covered Bridge
Road. The second bridge was the other side of Cumming so we headed east on 113 to
Cartersville then east on Hwy. 20. Poole’s mill Bridge is just off Hwy. 369 in the state park
named for the bridge. The next stop was to find some dinner; on the pre ride Friday I checked out
three different restaurants and struck out three times. The other Road Captains and I put our
heads together and decided to eat at Two Brothers’ BBQ in Ball Ground. We took a nice ride up
through Dawsonville and west to Tate then back south to Ball Ground. Two Brothers’ BBQ is
just east off Hwy. 5. The food was excellent as was the company. Thanks to Dianna for riding
sweep, Skeeter, Tom, Raymond and Big John for middle captains.

One Lane Bridge Recap
I checked the weather earlier in the week and we were expecting rain-again. I thought this ride
had doom written all over it. If I have to cancel again due to rain, I am scrapping it forever! As
you all know, the weather front blew out faster than anticipated and the weekend was destined
for success. We started from Steve's Place --- QT on Hwys. 278 & 61 in Dallas, GA. People
arrived in clusters: Bill Berry, Big John and Sonya Riggs. Skeeter brought along a guest, Derek,
who just purchased a new Harley. He had that big smile on his face and our three-wheeled friend
- Gator. Big John thought he had a fellow FL fan. Nope, Gator was from south GA, but was
known to have wrestled a few of those wrinkled-back reptiles over the years. We had nine bikes
and 10 folks ready for a great Spring day through Georgia.
We twisted our way over to the covered bridge in Awhirl. Gator had not been there before and he
wanted to check out the creek for his morning aerobics. After visiting for a while in Awhirl, we
traversed the first One Lane Wooden Bridge near Kingston...2 groupings of 4 2x10's! From
Kingston, we headed east on 411 to 41 N to Cassville Rd. NW and turned right onto Cassville-White Rd. across I-75 and up into the hills! C-W to Old TN Hwy. to Richards Rd. to Cass-Pine
Log across Hwy. 140 onto Pine Log Rd. to Calico Valley Rd...and too many small twisties to
write...but e-mail me and I'll be sure to get it to you. We stayed north of Hwy. 140 the balance of
the afternoon. Everyone was surprised how beautiful the land was so close to metro-Atlanta.
Back to the twisty farmland roads full of streams and the great flowering sights of Spring in
North Georgia...dogwoods, red buds, azaleas, etc. We were reminded a few times how the prime
farmland smells over came the flowering trees. Chickens, cows and ...yes, HOGS....peweee!
Nonetheless, we continued along at a relaxed pace to enjoy the Creator's Spring gifts. We ended
our ride in Waleska near Reinhardt College and enjoyed an outdoor lunch at the Grady Street
Grille in Waleksa. We shared stories and watched Big John accommodate DAGWOOD...a mile
high cold-cut sandwich.
Many folks asked me about another Lookout/Signal Mountain Ride. You can count on it!! Doug,
our Safety Officer, and Carole joined us in Waleska....I guess so they wouldn't be “Left Behind”.
Thanks to all who participated.
Until my next ride -- God Bless, Ride Safe, Ride Often!!
Steve Magel, Road Captain
