DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Cruising Along
Well here we are cruising right along. Do you believe it’s March already? It is raining and 40
degrees outside as I type this. Hopefully you’ve been able to get out and ride on the nice days. I
know I’ve felt this way and heard others comment on how great it has been to get in a good ride
every once in a while. Hopefully many days of good riding weather are just around the corner.
We have had the first two meetings of the New Year and the Chapter has been presented with the
new format for meetings. A shorter meeting, less talk, no meals, new PowerPoint presentation,
new audio/video equipment, etc. By the look on some of the faces in the crowd, I’m not sure if
members were in shock, pleased with the new format, hated the new format or what. A few
comments, opinions, and suggestions have been voiced or written. Some of them were really
good ideas and we began to implement them in the February meeting. Some members seem to be
really angry or frustrated at the new format. They seem to think I have made all these changes
and decision’s myself. In my own defense I have not made any of the changes or decision’s
myself. However, as your Chapter Director I will take the blame for those you don’t like.
Although they were not all my ideas, I do agree with them and therefore they were implemented.
If you have a comment, suggestion, criticism, etc. then by all means let your voice be heard. All I
ask is that if you don’t like something, please try to have a solution or an idea to make it better.
Long ago I gave up the idea of thinking I could make everyone happy. The Chapter Officers will
keep working to make this Chapter better, but we can only succeed with your help. We as your
Board were fortunate enough to assume the leadership responsibilities of one of the best Chapters
in the World. That is because of the people who founded this Chapter 20 years ago and who have
continued to lead and support this Chapter all these years. We are supported by one of the best
Dealerships in the World. I can say all this because I’ve attended a couple of Primary Officers
Training sessions with Chapter Officers from around the World. Do we get everything we want
from the Dealership? No! Do you get everything you want from the Chapter? Again, No! But we
are a blessed Chapter. We will continue to strive to be the best. Your comments are welcomed.
Hope to see you at the meeting.
I hope to see you at the meetings and on the road.
Until then, Ride Safe and Have Fun.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
General Group Riding Tips:
Tell the group leader if you have any special concerns, i.e., speed, sharp corners, medical, etc.
Tell the group leader if you plan to leave the group before the destination. Also, tell the persons
riding in front and behind you so they don't think you are having a problem.
When a rider leaves the group while in staggered formation, the best way to compensate for the
hole made by his absence is for each rider behind the missing bike to change lanes. Doing this
eliminates passing in a single lane.
Tell the group leader if your bike has an unusually short fuel range or if your bladder has a short
range.
It is not unusual to start out on a ride when it is fairly warm and have the temp cool down a lot
before getting home. Riders often wear a light jacket because it felt fine at the time of departure
and really be freezing after it got dark. This frequently happens on dinner rides.
Remember to take some clear eye protection if the ride will extend into the evening.
When exiting an expressway, keep up the pace so the riders behind you aren't forced to slow
down while still on the expressway and become a traffic hazard.

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter
had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of
rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa
Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let
us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead
and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other
motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new
people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!

Atlanta Chapter has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the
following URL:

Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page,

another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

POTPOURRI
Our “Right” to Ride?
Recently in several of the bike magazines such as American Rider and our own Hog Tales there
has been mention of our right to ride coming under attack. The concern of those articles has been
aimed at the issue of loud pipes and straight pipes in particular. The point of those articles is that
loud noise has now become enough of an issue in several state legislatures to the extent that if we
as owners and operators of motorcycles do not take care of this ourselves, they will take care of it
for us. And very likely in a way we do not want.
I am reminded of something I wrote about a couple of years ago in the HOGWASH. Is it our
right to ride or is this a privilege? By any definition of freedom we should be free to ride and
have fun; but by the same token, other folks should be free not to have to listen to obnoxiously
loud noise from our bikes (or any vehicle for that matter). So who is to decide what is too loud?
Right now as I mentioned, the issue focuses on straight pipes and it is likely that this is most
problematic at the larger gatherings which is stirring the controversy, wherein the town is
deluged with bikes and folks having a good time cracking the throttles (usually needlessly) to the
extent that the town is thunderous for days on end. Our own town of Helen, GA is a good
example of a location where perhaps too many bikers have, on too many occasions, made a
nuisance of themselves; we’re not outlawed but we are very carefully watched and not given
much slack when a violation occurs.
As much as we might feel that we should be free to ride virtually unencumbered, we must also
keep in mind that it is also a privilege to be able to do so in the sense that we are currently not
bothered much by being over regulated with laws concerning emissions and decibels of loudness----yet. It therefore is up to each of us to ride responsibly and provide the general public who are
not motorcyclists with a positive image of our sport so that this does not take place. Freedom is
a relative concept and it is not absolute. When my exercising my freedom infringes on another
not to be free from my behavior then perhaps my freedoms will be curtailed. We as riders, both
individually and as a group, hold our destiny in our own hands and have the opportunity through
the right behavior to see legislation held to a minimum. What legacy will we leave to our sport
and the future Harley riders not yet even aboard one of these fine bikes? How we behave when
we’re on our bikes is how we will make the choice for less legislation or more.
When you are out riding what does your behavior tell the observing public and what choice(s) are
you opting for? Think before you ride!
Tom Sigerfoos, Road Captain
Pig Ride Legend
One pig - steady cruising rides of relatively short distance, easy on the throttle, few curves, etc.
Two pigs - a bit longer or have some curves but nothing too challenging.
Three pigs - the ride should be of moderate difficulty.
Four and five pigs - rides with a high number of curves, long distance, saddle time, road conditions, speed, and weather.

ROAD TRIP
Whistle Stop Café
I invite everyone to log onto the Whistle Stop Cafe's website
http://www.thewhistlestopcafe.com/index2.html and get a taste of where the 1991 movie Fried
Green Tomatoes was filmed. On April 5, I will be leading a ride down to Juliette, GA to include
lunch at the Whistle Stop Café. We will meet at HD Atlanta at 9:30am with kick stands up at
10am. Our 120 miles trek to East Juliette, GA. will be rural county roads over to the Monticello,
GA area whereby we will come through the Oconee National Forest. Just before we get to East
Juliette, you will enjoy a few slow and winding curves...setting the stage for old-fashioned lunch
at the café. The menu is very affordable with your basic burgers, salads, etc. offered. Don't forget
to order the Fried Green Tomatoes. Meet Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 9:30 a.m. and leave at 10
a.m.. One stop at half way mark is planned. It is 120 miles one-way. We will get back around
3:00 or 4:00 p.m.. Only 3-pigs. Hope to see a large turnout.

Covered Bridge Ride April 3
Come join us on Sunday afternoon for an easy two pig ride through the country side. We’ll meet
at the QT on Hwy. 278 and 61 in Dallas at 1:00 p.m. then ride to the Euharlee covered bridge.
After a photo or two we’ll head over to Pool’s Mill Bridge. This will be an easy ride with no
interstates and only a few curves to make it interesting.
Did you know you could get a covered bridge patch? I believe Rene’ still has a few. To get a
patch you’ll need to prove your bridge visit either with a road captain’s signature or photos of
your bike’s visit to the bridge. You’ll need 10 of Georgia’s covered bridges listed in our tour
book and $10 dollars.
As usual we will find a fine dining experience somewhere along the way.

Ed’s Motorcycle Heaven Ride – April 9 - 10
This is going to be a day ride and/or an overnighter, depending upon what you want to do. We
will meet at the HDA at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 and leave at 9:00 a.m. The ride will take
us though Cartersville, Ellijay, to Hwy. 515, Hwy. 60, to North Carolina Hwy. 19. Lunch will be
at the Mountain Side Café where they serve great hamburgers. The ride will then continue to and
end at Valley River near Andrews, North Carolina. This is about a 150-200 mile ride (one-way).
For those of you that will like to join us for an overnighter bring your tent, etc. and enjoy
camping on my property on the Valley River or you may want to stay at one of the nearby motels
if you do not feel like roughen it. Call me at 404-787-3039 for motel information.
Saturday afternoon is also open for possibly a couple of loop rides, either the Dragon Tail’ or the Mile High Skyway. Plans are to return home the same day or for you overnighter’s, on Sunday, although some of us plan to come back home Monday morning.

Front Porch Dinner Ride
I'll be leading a ride to the Front Porch restaurant in Carrollton on April 16. We'll meet at 2:30
p.m. and leave at 3:00 p.m. from HDA. This ride takes about 45 minutes to an hour and is about
35 or so miles of back roads. It is Buffet style country cooking with from BBQ & stew to shrimp
and fish and chicken with the trimmings and more. Darn good eaten'! Come join us then for a
nice ride and some good food too!
Steve Johnson, Road Captain
John’s Mountain Ride
On April 17 I will be leading a ride to John’s Mountain north of Rome. We will meet at HDA at
9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. The ride will be about 125 miles and will take about three and a
half to four hours. I plan on stopping at a restaurant to be determined for a late lunch. The time
will have changed so we will have lots of daylight to work with. If you like long rides and need
to break the bike in after the short winter, then saddle up, eat a good breakfast and join in. It’s
going to be a great ride, don't be the only one to miss it.
Chris Robey, Road Captain
Thunder Beach Ride April 28, 2005
We will meet at the Wal-Mart Parking lot on Bullsboro Rd. (Hwy. 34) in Newnan at 8:30am.
(From Atlanta, take I-85 south to exit 47 in Newnan, go left back under the interstate. The Wal
Mart is about 1/2 mile south on the right. We will leave at 9:00am. It’s an interstate ride to
Columbus, across the state line to Phenix City Alabama, then down Alabama 431 to Dothan for
lunch, arriving at the Best Western Casa Loma of Panama City Beach around 4:00pm. Ride
distance is about 260 miles and about six hours in the saddle. The Best Western would not give
us any special group rates and decline to reserve a block of rooms, however, rooms may still be
available. You can call Toll Free for Reservations: 888-460-9336.
If anyone has any questions, they can reach me at 770-354-9229 or by email at

Rome Braves/Blues Brothers
I'm leading a ride to Rome to watch the Rome Braves play baseball and the Blues Brothers. Well
they just play! We will meet at 3:00 p.m. and leave at 3:30 p.m. on May 7 from HDA. It's about
one and a half - two hours ride for approximately 70 miles or there about. For those who want to
stay overnight, I have reserved 25 rooms at the Holiday Inn Skytop, just off US 411. Their phone
number is 706-295-1100. Ask for Diann Stewart and tell her you are with the Atlanta Harley
group. She's holding 13 smoking and 12 nonsmoking rooms, for $71.00 per night for two people
and this includes an all you care to eat hot breakfast Buffet! (There is a 72-hour cancellation
thing). For those who wish to do so, you may call the Rome Braves office at 706-378-5144, after
the 1st week in March and get your tickets ahead of time and pick them up at the will call
window. They go from $4 - $20, I think.
The Braves used to be in Macon but moved to Rome a couple of years ago and they have a
beautiful stadium in Rome and this is a really fun outing. So ya'll come on out and join us
Saturday, May 7, for a darn good time! Hope to see you then.

Made in America Reminder/Hotel Number Correction
The correct number for reservations at the Courtyard by Marriott in Nashville is 800-831-0224. I
apologize for any inconvenience the wrong number might have caused.
Just a reminder that I need to hear from you by June 10, 2005 if you are planning to go on this
ride so I can get an exact headcount for the tours. Both tours have to be paid for by June 14 -
GM Corvette plant is $5.00 each and Louisville Slugger is $7.25 each. I will cover both of these
and get reimbursed on the road from those who are going, but final headcounts have to be in by
June 14. I’ve reserved 50+ slots for each tour. I will be charged for unused slots so I would like
to provide an accurate number before the change date expires.
Email me at dynabear@tds.net if you plan to go.
Also, remember to make your hotel reservations by the May 23 deadline!

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Ride to Fin’s Catfish House Recap
It was a bit cool and the sun didn’t come out like I had hoped it would. We left the dealership with 11 bikes and 14 people. The ride was great, I had not planned on stopping at the service
station we made our rest stop at but with the temp I thought it was a good time to stop. Turned
out that it was a true service station with full service pumps and nothing in the way of a store.
The bathrooms were even outside (sorry guys). We arrived 30 minutes early but the manager and
staff were quick to get things ready for us. The Staff was very friendly and took very good care of
us, the food was great. Next time you’re in Columbus try this place out. I want to thank everyone
who came out for the ride and for those who weren’t where were you at? I also want to thank
David Trefzger for riding middle captain and Diana Bodden for riding sweep. This is defiantly a
ride I will do again so keep an eye out for it.

Ride to The Steak House Recap
What a day to ride. It was more like April than February. The sky was clear and the temp was in
the high 50's. We left the dealership with 14 bikes, 17 people and picked up another one at our
rest stop at the corner of Hwy. 113 and Sandhill Hickory Level Road. As the ride went along, the
sky clouded and it got kind of cool but overall it was a great day to ride. Other than a missed turn
the ride went smooth (which I recovered from beautifully as usual). We arrived at The Steak
House on time and they got us right in. The food was excellent and the service was very good
(one server to 18 people, she did a very good job). The ride was 82 miles and took about two and
a half hours. I want to thank Andy Andresen for riding sweep, Scott Vandiver for running middle
captai, Corolla Vandiver for taking care of the pictures and Gary for making sure I’m doing
things right, LOL. Everybody had a great time and once again I want to thank all who was there
for supporting the chapter. You have a lot of choices and it’s great to see so many people
showing up and enjoying all the rides that the Road Captains work so hard on.
