DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A Big Thank You!
If you were at the January meeting you got to see and hear the new audio/video equipment and
Power Point presentation. If you missed it hopefully, you will attend future meetings and see
what I’m talking about. Let me say thank you to your Chapter Officers who voted to purchase
this new equipment. Also thank you Eddie and Chris Houghton, owners of Harley-Davidson of
Atlanta who authorized the use of Chapter Funds to purchase the equipment and the management
of HDA for their input.
Thank you Scott Vandiver for all the time and effort spent in researching the equipment, getting
bids, picking up the equipment, and learning how everything worked together, etc. Thank you
Corolla Vandiver for helping Scott for taking all the pictures, for collecting pictures from
members and putting them together on a disc. Thank you Terri Varnum for putting together the
Power Point presentation, which includes Corolla’s pictures and music, slide presentation
identifying Officers, Road Captains, and the Ride Calendar, etc.
The three of them spent a very cold night in Scott and Corolla’s garage setting up all the
equipment, building the rolling pictorial of pictures from Chapter Rides and Events, and then put
it all to music. I think they did a fantastic job. There will be changes to the presentation each
month. If you have pictures of past events that we have coming up get them to Terri so she can
add them. Hopefully this will encourage members to participate in future activities when they see
how much fun we have.
When you have had an opportunity to see this presentation, make sure the next time you see
Terri, Corolla, and Scott tell them how much you appreciated it and all the time and effort they
put into it.
Experienced Riders Course
On Saturday, February 5, the Harley-Davidson of Atlanta Riders Edge Instructors hosted the first
Experienced Riders Course. This is a course that many members have been asking about for the
past couple of years. Nine people showed up to take the class. Things started out cold in the
morning with temperatures in the 20’s but soon began to warm up, first the bikes, then the tires
and finally us. It got up into the 60’s by the end of the day and we came out of our leathers. It was
a full day beginning at 8:00 a.m. and finishing up about 6:00 p.m. that evening. Yes, you have to
ride your own bike in the class. For those who are concerned about dropping or damaging their
bike in some way, I’ll tell you what the instructors had to say, “That is not what this class is all about.” NO ONE dropped a bike. The class is designed to take what you have learned in a basic class and improve on that. And that’s exactly what the class does. If you pay attention to what, the instructors teach you and put it into practice you will do fine. We had a good mixture of
experience in our class. We had people who had never taken an official lesson or class in their
life and we had people who had taken several classes. We had people who have been riding for
as little as three years and some who have ridden more than 50 years. It has been a year since I
took a riding class and I would have to say that the most important thing that I took from this
class was that good riding skills are not automatic. You have to continuously practice GOOD
techniques or you will lose them. Remember these: Keep your head up, look thru the turn, use
both brakes, a little less rear brake. It’s a good idea to go to a parking lot and practice your skills
on a regular basis.
There is always room for improvement and new skills to learn. So when you see, the next
Experienced Riders Course being offered then sign up. If you haven’t taken the Basic Course
then maybe you should start there. You will be surprised at how much you learn and how much
better and safer you get.
If you have any questions here are few of the members, who attended; John and Lisa Metcalf,
Chris Robey, Roger Smith, Ike Eisemann and myself. Also, you can speak to the instructors at the dealership Chris Carr, Larry Marquit, or Adam Towns. Hope to see you out there learning!
I hope to see you at the meetings and on the road.
Until then, Ride Safe and Have Fun.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
If you attended the Christmas Social in December we asked you to complete a Survey. Of the more than 200 in attendance only 75 people completed and turned them back in. Here is what those people had to say:
The majority of you prefer to ride in the Mountains and in North Georgia. You prefer to travel on Secondary and Mountain type roads. You like Bike Rallies and Flea Markets more than Poker Runs and Racing Events. You choose whether or not to go on rides based mainly on the destination and prefer the rides to last all day. While most of you will ride if the temperature is more than 50 degrees, you don’t like to ride if it’s much colder than that. You prefer to ride on Saturdays and enjoy rides that are more than 150 miles in length. Eighty-nine percent of you are aware that the Chapter has a website. Fifty-seven percent of members are aware of our Chapter Yahoo User Group; of those, 34% are members. Eighty-four percent of you have an email account. Fifty percent would prefer to receive their HOGWASH via email. Only 11% went on more than 11 Chapter rides last year. You like to ride in groups of 15 or more and enjoy eating
most anywhere.
Of the comments that we received this is what you said:
What do you Like about the Chapter?
Friendly members
Way to meet people
Dealer Support
Special events/socials
Friendly welcoming
What do you NOT like about the Chapter?
Meetings are TOO long
Too much talking at meetings
Lack of participation/volunteering
Cliques/gossip
Not enough rides
What would you CHANGE?
More upbeat meetings
Better organized meetings
Less talk at meetings
More rides
More interaction between members
We listened to what you had to say and have focused on making changes to our Chapter Meetings. We hope that our Power Point Presentation will make them more interesting, better organized and require less talking. Our goal is to have the meetings over within an hour so that we can hop on our bikes and head out with one of the Road Captains to a designated eating location. This is your Chapter, if you have an idea to make it better please give us your suggestions.

MEMBERSHIP OFFICER'S REPORT
Membership does have its rewards:
A big welcome to our new members and a welcome back to the returning members. Our chapter
had a great year in 2004. The officers and road captains did a fabulous job. We had all types of
rides to a wide variety of places, from Savannah and Charleston in the spring then the mountains,
caverns and museums in the summer. Then we found Jack Daniels, Signal Mountain and Toccoa
Gorge in the Fall. When you add in the “chow” rides this chapter had a full calendar of rides. Some of the rides started out as suggestions from our members. So, if you have any more just let
us know.
It is good to reminisce and share those fond memories. However now is the time to plan ahead
and prepare to make new memories. Like the Nissan commercial says “Make better Memories”.
I have owned several 4x4 trucks and a couple of performance cars, and a couple of other
motorcycles. Not one of them has brought as many pleasures, fun and “better memories” as riding and playing as an Atlanta chapter member.
You might ask “Why?” “It is just a machine.” Yes it is just a machine; however, the people riding this machine are not like the rest of them. The people are what make riding a Harley different. They understand what you’re going through when the weather turns bad and you’re 200 miles from home. They really know how badly you feel when you drop your bike. They will help and encourage you, because they want you to have as much fun as they have.
Let’s steal the slogan “Make better Memories”. You know we can do a better job at it than any four-wheel cage driver.
Now I would like to challenge each member to introduce himself/herself to at least two new
people at every Atlanta Chapter event. Remember it’s the people that make the difference. Just ask the kids at SHARE House about Atlanta Chapter.

WEB MASTER'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter Web Page
Due to a review of our web page by national H.O.G., I have had to do some changing. I will no longer list chapter members’ birthdays on the web page. They will still be in the HOGWASH and on the web page in the HOGWASH Print as Mailed. I had to move the HOGWASH Archives and the HOGWASH Print as Mailed to a password-protected page. You will need a userid and password to access these pages. I will print the userid and password in the HOGWASH each month so you will have access to these pages. This is security protection for our members who names and email addresses appear in past and/or current publications. This does not apply to chapter officer/road captains per national H.O.G. This information is for Atlanta Chapter members ONLY and is not to be disseminated to NON-Chapter Members. These changes only apply to the web site. The HOGWASH publication will remain the same.
Keep Email Address Updated!
If you have updated your e-mail address, PLEASE send me your new address. I get several undeliverable e-mail messages each time I send a message updating members on up coming or changed events. Please, keep you e-mail address up to date and stay informed! E-mail me at hog@mindspring.com. Thanks!!

Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give you "Real Name". That way other members will recognize your name and be able to e-mail you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Terri Varnum is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Update
Back in November of last year we kicked off the idea of buying a barrel of Jack Daniel’s single
barrel whiskey which we would arrange to put into Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. 20th Year
commemorative bottles. Sales have not been as brisk as hoped for, with Christmas and all, so we
are relaxing our ambitious deadline of January 31 (already passed obviously) and will go a bit
further, likely until the end of April 2005. Please refer back to your HOGWASH for the months
of December 2004 and January 2005 (also on line at www.atlantahog.com in the archives) for
details on how you can obtain one of these one of a kind bottles. Email me at dynabear@tds.net

MEMBER COMMENT
Experienced Riders Course
I recently took the Experienced Riders Course at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. This was my first riding course of any kind. I did not know what to expect so I went prepared. I wrapped the engine guard in hose and packed the saddle bags tight so if I dropped the bike there would be minimal damage. But that didn’t happen. There were nine people (sorry I don’t remember all of the names). Most of the participants had at least five years under their belt. A few names known in the chapter, John and Lisa Metcalf, Tom Arnold, Ike Eisemann and Roger Smith, along with several others, there was even a guy riding a Ducati. Most of the class was spent on the course riding the bikes. We did spend some time in the classroom but it was due mostly to the temperature. I learned a lot from the class. I have been riding for three years and found that I was doing a lot of things wrong. The class focused on the proper way to react in an emergency, stopping, turning and stopping while in a curve. This is a great class and I will be recommending it to anyone who will listen. The course is well worth the money. It’s a great refresher or if you are like me it’s a way to learn the proper way to handle your bike.
Chris Robey
Experienced Riders Course
There’s nothing like stretching yourself and learning new skills, which is exactly what John and I did on Saturday, February 5. On that beautiful sunny day, except for the briskness of the 7:30 A.M. start time, we gathered with seven other students and five instructors. Together, we had a great time in the Experienced Riders Course at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. We were welcomed by Chris, Larry, and Adam of the Riders Edge teaching team at HDA, as well as by Karl and Tommy from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, all of whom are state certified. Everyone was there to gain knowledge about riding safer.
While trying out some newly designed curriculum, we gained some very valuable additions to our arsenal of knowledge as riders. Even John was amazed at the new tidbits of knowledge he learned, and that’s after riding for more than 40 years! My arsenal is still a bit small, so I was glad to add in anything that I could. Believe me when I say this, EVERYONE can gain something positive from this course to make you a safer and better rider.
As the day began, we did some classroom work, but got to the bikes as soon as we possibly could. After taking the New Riders Course in March of 2004, I was concerned (okay, I was VERY concerned) that I wouldn’t be experienced enough to do the skills as required in this course. Those fears turned quickly away, as the instructors all provided much support and feedback for making me better and to have a good time as well. There is a definite knack to keeping things serious and following the rules, yet making everyone in the class comfortable and having a fun time. Stress can become a part of the exercises, if you choose to let it, but with some humor and realization that we are all there to learn, it quickly goes away.
Now I would have to venture a guess that some of you are wondering what would you learn from taking an Experienced Riders Course through Riders Edge, especially those of you who have been riding more years than not. You can ask John yourself, the next time you see him, but I’ll go ahead and share some of our conversations with you now. One thing to realize is that in the beginner’s class, you ride the provided Buells. In the experienced class, you ride your own. That’s a great thing to gain the experience on your own bike. More pressure to not drop it too!
For those of you who know John, you know he doesn’t like following the rules all that well. As he says . . . “what rules?” And if you’ve ever taken a motorcycle safety course anywhere, you know that there are very specific things you have to do for each exercise, with points being deducted for things you miss. I wondered how John would do in those situations, and I was quite pleasantly surprised!
For months, I’ve been telling John that I wasn’t sure how well he’d do in the basic course, not for riding knowledge, but for the specific skills required. And he’s been riding for so long that his habits are formed. Sometimes it’s harder to break habits than to learn new ones, and he has agreed with me all along. So on Saturday, his chance to test all of those skills came with a bang, and he did superbly! He did admit he struggled on a few of them at first (those darn rules. . .!) but he quickly mastered them.
Also, for those of you who have been keeping up, John has been through the mill with his three surgeries and this was the first time back on the bike since September. He was fully cleared to ride from the doctor, but he wasn’t as comfortable as he once was on the bike. Despite those initial concerns, he flew through the exercises, amazed at what some simple changes or adjustments to a previously learned method did for his safety and success factors. He continued to gush all night long at how amazed he was how much he took out of that class, even after riding for years and years.
You’ll make new friends and strengthen existing friendships in a class like this. Our thanks to all of the students in the group on Saturday for making the class such a fun success. Everyone offered tremendous support throughout the day, and a good time was had by all. I would like to personally thank Tom Arnold, Chapter Director for Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, for all of his ongoing encouragement throughout the course to me. Those thumbs up and nods of encouragement go a long way in keeping a newer rider feeling confident.
So what can you expect from taking an Experienced Rider Course? A great time, some incredibly helpful feedback from experienced instructors, and the knowledge that you’ll be safer on the road the next time you decide to take a ride. Oh, and probably a discount rate on your insurance! What a deal!
John and I took off for home after the class, and it was already a different ride for us. We gave each other this class as a Valentine’s Day gift, and I can’t think of anything better to give to someone you love than a course that improves skill and understanding of safe riding. John and I want to be around a long time to love one another, so together we are learning safer riding skills.
Thanks again to the team at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for hosting this first “new” course, testing the waters, so to speak. It was a phenomenal day with great sharing of ideas and a bunch of safe riding. See you next time!

ROAD TRIP
Loco’s Carrollton Ride
On March 19, I will be leading a round about a ride to Loco’s in Carrollton. It is going to be about a 75-mile ride and will take about two to three hours (depending on the temperature and number of stops). It is a great route staying on back roads. Locos’ has good food at reasonable prices. Come one, come all. It has been proven that this chapter isn’t afraid of a little cold air so I hope to have a good turn out.

Fibber's Lunch Ride
If you really like to put on the ol' feedbag, you will want to make this ride with us. I'm sure many of you already know of Fibber's, but I'm also sure that many of you don't. Fibber's is in Alabama about an hour and a half to two hour ride from the shop. It's a buffet style with more different foods than you will be able to eat and it is delicious. The first time I ate there I almost hurt myself I ate so much, and so did David Gilmer if you can believe that! But it's a nice easy ride out Hwy. 78 to Tallapoosa and then up Hwy. 100 to Cave Spring and then turn right at Reba's on into Coosa where you turn left and go on in on AL Hwy. 9 right to the place ( it's on the right ). Come ride with us, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'll give it a "2-pigs ." This ride will be on March 20. We’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. from HDA.
Ride today like you want to be able to ride tomorrow.

Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet---Get Ready to Ride!
Our “Made in America” tour continues with our second trip, featuring a visit to the Chevrolet Corvette Assembly Plant and Museum in Bowling Green, KY and the Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory in Louisville, KY. Trip dates are from June 23 - 26, which is a Thursday through Sunday and this schedule is mandated by the fact that the Corvette plant is closed on the weekends and the Slugger factory does not do any bat manufacturing on Sunday. That means we must leave during the week, so I am getting this info out to you well in advance for your planning. I hope many of you will be able to go.
The trip schedule is as follows:
Thursday, June 23: depart Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 1:00 p.m. and travel to Nashville, TN, our destination for the night.
Friday, June 24: kick stands up at 8:00 a.m. as we head to Bowling Green, KY, about 70 miles away. We’ll do a Corvette Museum tour starting about 10:30 a.m. and our Corvette Assembly Plant tour begins at 1:00 p.m. sharp -- (Note: the assembly plant tour time is a “hard start”; tours run at 9:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. only and are not self guided). We should be able to do a dealer stop prior to the museum tour. The museum here is a separate, private facility and is not part of the assembly plant. See admission info below and please note that no cameras or containers of any kind are allowed inside the Corvette manufacturing plant.
Following the assembly plant tour, we will travel to Louisville, KY a distance of about 160 miles.
Saturday, June 25: our tour of the baseball bat factory and museum begins at 11:00 and takes about 90 minutes, so we should finish around 12:30PM. The museum here is located within the factory, so one admission covers it all at Louisville Slugger.
Following the Slugger tour, we will have lunch and begin heading toward home. Those interested can also tour, in south Louisville which is on our way, the Kentucky Derby Museum and Churchill Downs race track. Museum tours and race track tours are separate, so you can do one or both depending on your interest and time schedule. Note that on Saturday, the last tour begins at 1:00 p.m. so you may have to eat after this if you plan to do this one.
Hotel arrangements have been made again in Nashville for Saturday evening. Since Louisville to Atlanta about 420 miles, I would not imagine many of you will try to get home on Saturday as we won’t leave Louisville until around 1:30; Nashville would be almost halfway and is always a fun place to stop.
I hope many of you will consider making this one of a kind trip — a “mini” vacation of sorts. It should be a lot of fun and we will see some really neat stuff!
Admission fares for this trip are as follows:
Corvette Plant: $5.00 (this began 2/1/05). This tour must be paid up by June 10, 2005 so if
you think you are going, email me by June 1, 2005 so I can cover this. I will get
reimbursement from each person when we hit the road. My email is: dynabear@tds.net.
Corvette Museum: $8.00, over 55-$6.00, more than 15 in a group $6.00.
Louisville Slugger: $8.00; more than 20 in group $7.25.
Kentucky Derby Museum: $9.00; more than 55, $8.00.
Churchill Downs Race Track: $6.00 (limited to 12 persons). Tours are available only at 7A, 8A,
10A, 1P on Saturdays.

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Cheaha Mountain Ride Recap
First off, I want to say I was really surprised at the number of people that showed up for this ride. When I left my house it was 32 degrees. As I rode to the dealership I was expecting four or five bikes. When I arrived at the dealership at 9:30 a.m. there were already five bikes waiting. It was around 40 degrees when we left the dealership with 12 bikes and 14 people. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and due to the temperature, I decide to make two stops instead of the original one on the way to Cheaha. While at Cheaha we did the usual walk up to the restaurant and had a look at the great scenery and took some pictures. From there, we went a back way out of the park where I had never been. It was a great route with lots of twistes (thanks David for showing us this route). We ended up at the Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon in Oxford for a late
lunch. The food and service were exceptional. It was one of the few restaurants I have lead rides
to that can handle a group of this size with ease. I recommend this place very highly. From there
we made a quick stop at Mt. Cheaha HD to look around. I want to think everyone that braved the
cold weather for a great time and David Trefzger for doing a great job of running sweep.
