DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Another Year
Well another year has come to an end in the world of HOG. We have had one of our best years
ever in 2004. And it’s because of you that we were so successful. Don’t get me wrong, if it
wasn’t for the tireless efforts of the Officers, Road Captains, and the many Volunteers who plan
the rides and activities there wouldn’t be much to talk about. But your participation is what makes
the Chapter what it is. You showed up for rides, you came to the meetings, you volunteered, you
made financial contributions to many charity rides, you helped with the SHARE House at Easter,
Halloween, Thanksgiving and now at Christmas. Who can forget the smiles, the waves, and
sometimes the tears of joy and Thank You’s we received when we rode for the March of Dimes,
the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the SHARE House and to Remember our Military and the
sacrifices they and their families have made. It felt good to be a part of so many great and
worthwhile events. We got to ride our Harleys, have a good time and be a part of something
memorable. It warms the heart to know how many lives we have touched in such a positive way.
Take a moment to relive some of those events and be proud.
With the end of the year and a new year beginning our Chapter will see some changes. We say
Thank You to a couple of our officers to have made the decision to retire from their current
positions. Dave Devlin has retired after serving the past couple of years as the Chapter Secretary.
Along with all the time and effort he put into the March of Dimes programs and during his tenure
as the dealership liaison. We wish Dave and Sharon well and look forward to seeing them around
the dealership and at Chapter Rides and Activities. Tom Sigerfoos has decided to retire from his
position as Chapter Director for the past three years. (Otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here typing
this right now) Tom will stay involved with the Chapter as a Road Captain and yes he will still
lead the Southern High Roads Ride and a few more he is planning. Please take the time to Thank
these guys for all the hard work and efforts they put into this Chapter and Harley-Davidson of
Atlanta.
We as a Chapter and as individuals were blessed this past year with the opportunity to ride the
best motorcycle made. We collectively put hundreds of thousands of miles on our bikes. We rode
in beautiful weather and some of the worst Mother Nature had to throw at us. We had members
who went down and got back up and back on to ride again. We were inspired to see the Heart of
a Champion as we watch and pray for Ronnie’s progress. Don’t take this Chapter or your Riding for granted. Live every moment of life to the fullest and spend as much time in the saddle as you
can. Ride and Have Fun, that’s what it’s all about. See you out there!
Make Ridin’ Happen.

You will also see some changes to the way we conduct our meetings. The biggest change you will
notice is that we will no longer provide a meal at the meetings. For those who were not aware, in the past the dealership has paid for the meal. The price of meals usually runs anywhere from $350.00 to $1,200.00 per month. What we will be trying to do is to cut down on the time the meeting takes so that we can get out Ride and Have Fun! We plan to have the meeting last no more than one hour. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.. The meeting will be called to order and we will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. This will be followed by a Moment of Silence. This is a
time that you can pray, take a deep breath, relax and reflect on whatever is on your mind. Take
time to remember a loved one, someone who is ill, maybe one of our members or someone else
who rides, our military in harms way, whatever you want. It will be your moment of silence. Then
we will get on with the business of the meeting. We are going to try and limit how much of the
ride calendar we cover during the meeting. The overnight rides and our large scale charity rides
will be covered but for all other rides you will need to refer to your HOGWASH. We will
introduce the Ride Captains and their rides will be posted. When the meeting is over what we
hope to see are members getting together to go ride, get something to eat, socialize, spend quality
time together. On some nights we will have dinner rides preplanned so you will know ahead of
time. The point is we want to spend less time in a meeting and more time riding and socializing
with our friends.
On some meeting nights we are going to try and have a video presentation of some of the rides
and activities our Chapter and members have been involved in. To this end we need your help.
Take pictures of the rides and activities you attend and then get them to Corolla.
So these are some of the changes you will see. As they say, it will be work in progress. If you like
it let us know. If you don’t, then let us know. This is your Chapter. We will be what you make it.
The only thing I ask is if you have a complaint or gripe, have a solution or at least an idea or
suggestion to make it better.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
I would like to begin by saying “Thank You”. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have
served as your Activities Officer for the past two years. Any time that I put out a call for help
you always stepped up and came through for me. This Chapter contributed graciously to several
charities this past year. Isn’t it a great feeling knowing that because of your generosity, the
residents at the Share House were provided with Easter Baskets, Halloween bags, Thanksgiving
Dinners and presents under a Christmas tree? We were also able to make a cash contribution
(collected from our chili cook-off and 50/50 drawings) that will help pay their utility bills. I am
very proud to be part of the Atlanta Chapter family.
As we begin the New Year, you will notice a few changes. I will be taking on a new role as your
Assistant Director. I will continue to work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and March
of Dimes rides but will leave the other activities and Share House events to Nancy Bjerre who will
be your 2005 Activities Officer.
As your Chapter Officers and Road Captains strive to make this year eventful, fun and exciting,
we will look to you for new ideas, comments and suggestions on ways we can make
improvements. At the same time, if you have issues or concerns please let one of the Officers
know about them.
I hope that this year provides many riding opportunities for us all.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Motorcycles and Noise
(Repeat Due to Popular Demand)
Everyone rags on motorcycles being noisy, but those of us who love that H-D sound know that
most of the noise is left behind when we’re riding, right? Well, I’ve done some research because
several years ago I started having a significant loss in my own hearing. Although a lot of my
hearing loss was do to shooting firearms, running heavy equipment and working around big
power saws in the 70’s and 80’s without hearing protection. At that time most people and
businesses didn’t take loud, hazardous noise seriously.
Just so we all have the same reference points, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health
Administration) says immediate hearing loss can begin with noise over 90 db. The military says
anything over 84 db is bad for you, and over time can cause permanent damage. A normal
conversation between two people in an office is about 65 db, a noisy restaurant about 80 db, a
subway around 90 db, a rock band generates about 110 db, and a gunshot is about 140 db1.
According to David Marr in his article, “Sound Advice” (Road Rider, Jan. 1987), a motorcycle at
idle is 74 db; at 35 mph mixed city traffic, between 110-140 db; and at average highway speeds
for a 10 mile run, 116 db. These measurements were taken with and without a helmet, and the
helmet was found to reduce the sound by only 3db2.
“Based on several research studies, the major contributor to hearing loss in the motorcycle
industry remains the “silent killer” known as “wind noise”. Generically termed as the amount of
noise turbulence produced around the head while the rider is in motion. Its inherited
consequences result in irreversible hearing loss damage over a period of time when adequate
hearing protection is not worn. Similar to the shooting and aviation industries, if this issue is not
addressed correctly from the beginning the amount of exposure to the inner ear is compounded
every time the rider ventures out on his/her bike for hours at a time3.
Fortunately, we usually have a warning called “tinnitus”, or ringing in the ear, before we have
hearing loss. Tinnitus is noise that only you can hear.
So what can you do to prevent hearing loss? It’s simple, “first” of all when you are out riding at
highway speeds for an extended period of time wear earplugs. You can get ear plugs in a variety
of styles but, statistically the cheap foam ear plugs are some of the best if worn properly and they
can be purchased at most hardware stores. They are used extensively in industry because they
allow the frequencies of normal speech to be heard. “Second”, evaluate your riding and
windshield positions.
Fact is if you wear hearing protection so, your ears don’t take a beating. You’ll be a lot less
fatigue at the end of the day. It’s been proven, when exposed to loud noise and/or
wind/turbulence fatigue sets in.
Remember, wear your hearing protection. Save your hearing and you’ll have a lot more energy to
enjoy yourself when you get to your destination and that’s a fact. Until next time, be safe, take
your time, enjoy the ride and chances are you’ll always keep the shiny side up.

Meet Nancy Bjerre, New Activities Office
My name is Nancy Bjerre (pronounced B-Air). I grew up in the City of Atlanta in the Virginia
Highlands Area. Except for three years in Connecticut, Georgia has been my home. My husband,
John, and I now reside in Marietta, the West Cobb area. I am the mother of three grown children
and two grandchildren, all-residing in the Atlanta metro area, and the proud stepmother of a
grown son residing in South Dakota. For the past 13 years I have been employed by Georgia-Pacific Corporation as Scheduler/Dispatcher for our Flight Department located at Fulton County
(Charlie Brown) Airport. This upcoming year will be my 33rd year in aviation. As for
motorcycles, I rode as a passenger in the mid 1970’s but the initial fear came back. After eight
years of whining, I finally told my husband, to go ahead and get a Harley, it was to be HIS hobby.
Our first bike was a Dyna Wide Glide and as many of you remember was very uncomfortable to
me. After a dinner ride I refused to ride the Dyna again and two weeks later we were the proud
owners of a 2000 Road King WITH a “Barco lounger” for me, as John calls my seat. The first
meeting I attended with John made me realize that I really enjoyed the camaraderie and the group
togetherness feeling. I feel very strongly about our HOG and very much enjoy being able to ride,
donate or do things for others that can make a difference in their lives. Although coordination
challenged I love riding as a passenger. I am very proud of our female riders and envy them that
pleasure. I have large shoes to fill as this years’ Activities Officer and look forward to the
challenge. If you have any ideas or suggestions for activities that our Chapter might be interested
in, please feel free to contact me at 770-426-5072 or e-mail me at bjerre@prodigy.net.

TECH TIP
Long time not write ladies and gentlemen. Happy holidays from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. With
the cooler weather and the rain here lately, I have had many motorcyclists’ hauling instead of
riding. That's not a bad thing though, I know I don't like to start out in the rain myself. Along with
hauling with an open or enclosed trailer you can encounter one small yet major problem, knocking
off your jiffy stand spring.
This can be very irritating at times. You may have to duct tape your stand up or even tie it up
with a shoe lace just to get home or to a shop. Here's what to do; buy an extra jiffy stand spring
and carry it with you along with a 11/16 wrench or rachet and socket. The jiffy stand is held on by
a 11/16 nut that screws directly onto the jiffy stand. If you have a Sportster or Dyna model there
is a cotter pin through a clevis pin that holds it on.
On Softail and Touring models, use a stand under your motorcycle or someone holding it upright
before starting. Remove the 11/16 nut and stop to drop the jiffy stand down out of the bracket.
When the jiffy stand is up it is to the rear of the motorcycle. When installing the jiffy stand spring,
have the jiffy stand to the front of the motorcycle and hook the spring to it and the frame. Insert
the jiffy stand upwards back into the bracket. With the jiffy stand in the down position, re-install
the stop and the nut and torque to factory specifications. Repeat similar procedures with Sportster
and Dyna models, except remove and re-install clevis pin and a cotter pin instead of stop and nut.
You don't have to be putting your motorcycle on a trailer either. I have seen riders’ drive off or
over curbs and knock the spring off. If you try to install the spring without following this
procedure, you may cause damage to the spring and personal injury to yourself. Until the next
Tech Tip keep praying for John's quick recovery. Thank you from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta.

Thank You for My Gift
I would like to thank the chapter for your thoughtful gift of the engraved wrist watch presented to
me at our last meeting. As I said in my last cover article, it was very much a pleasure for me to
have been your Director these past three years and I enjoyed it tremendously. The watch will be a
life long reminder of all the fun times I had being Director and all the wonderful people in our
chapter.
Tom Sigerfoos
Thank You
As we start a new year I would like to thank everyone that came out and supported me over this
past year. My first year as a Road Captain was a challenge, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It
can be quite a rush to look back and see 15 or more bikes that showed up for an idea you had and
wanted to share with the rest of the Chapter. I am returning once again this year and hope to do
even more rides than last year. I have some new ideas for rides, and would like to hear your ideas
as well. Don’t be shy, let me or one of the other Road Captains know about any rides you would
like to see on this year Calendar.
Chris Robey, Road Captain
Do you Yahoo?
Here it is another year and time to start planning for the next riding season. I’m already looking
ahead and marking all the important dates on the calendar. No matter where you are going its
always nice to find other people to ride with. The Chapter has a great outlet for communicating
with other members and a means for getting other Chapter information between newsletters. For
those of you unaware the Chapter has a User Group on Yahoo. To join the group go to our
chapter website at http://www.atlantahog.com and click on the icon “Yahoo Groups join now“.
You must be a current member of the Atlanta Chapter. Your information will be verified and you
will then be allowed to join. You need to have a Yahoo user id (which is free) and make sure that
under your profile you have your “Real Name” so that it can be matched to your membership.
There are several features that will enhance your membership with the Chapter. You can post
messages to other members to get information on upcoming events, hook up with others going to
the same rallies or events, or just chat and find new friends to ride with. There is an area to
upload files such as flyers, or maps of your favorite rides that you might want to share with
others. Upload pictures of rides, events or of yourself to let others know who you are. A
calendar lists upcoming Chapter events as well as other HOG related events. If you really like to
ride and are looking for a little more from your HOG Chapter experience, join the Yahoo user
group and start the new year out well informed and possibly make some new friends to share
those exciting memories with.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Purchase Update
Here is some updated information on the purchase of the single barrel of whiskey from Jack
Daniel’s:
1. Pre-sales began at our November member meeting. To place your order, go by the shop and
give Rene a check made payable to Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. in the amount of $43.00 per bottle
desired, or mail it into her attention. Checks are the only form of payment accepted and payment
must be made at the time of the order. Also there is no limit to individual orders, you may order
as many bottles as you like. Sorry, no reserving and paying later, it creates too many potential
problems
2. The chapter needs to pre-sell 233 bottles in order to collect all the money up front for our
order. These will be commemorative bottles so you won’t be able to get this exact bottle
anywhere else. The bottle will feature a medallion commemorating the chapter’s 20th year.
3. The $43.00 per bottle price includes all taxes as well as a $5.00 per bottle donation to the
SHARE House.
4. Once the money is collected, our order will be placed and paid for. We will then receive an
approximate bottling date and a delivery date. Based on this, we will arrange a distribution date,
to take place on a Saturday, and publish that date in advance. Bottling takes place usually within
four to six weeks of order placement.
5. The chapter would like to get all money in and try to place our order no later than the end of
January 2005. If this happens, I would anticipate delivery around mid March. In the event we do
not have sufficient interest, that is we do not get the 233 bottles pre sold, your money will be
refunded in the form of a check from the chapter.
6. Again, these bottles will be a commemorative bottle, truly one of a kind. Once we get to 233
bottles sold that’s it, so don’t wait too long to order or you’ll run the risk of getting left out!
ORDER NOW!
Tom Sigerfoos
End of Another Year
Seems like it was January just a couple of weeks ago. They say the older you get the faster the
years go by. At the rate this one went I must be ancient.
Two years ago I became Secretary of the chapter. I never really knew how much work the
officers of a H.O.G. Chapter must do. Getting behind the scenes, these past two years have given
me a whole new outlook on the job it takes to run a really great organization. Compared to some
of the positions being Secretary is a breeze.
I want to commend all the officers in our chapter for their efforts over the past two years. Tom
Sigerfoos and Tom Arnold have done a tremendous job keeping things going in the right
direction. Rene’ Durham as always keeps the money straight and Gary Langmaid has worked
hard to keep quality Road Captains leading rides of all flavors.
I am especially in awe of the job done by Terri Varnum as Activities Director/Ladies of Harley.
She is a single working mom that always seems to have some activity going with enthusiasm and
good cheer. Her leadership ability and efforts for SHARE House, MDA, and March of Dimes
have inspired the chapter to a level of generosity to be admired by all H.O.G. Chapters.
Next year will bring some new Officers and a whole new calendar. I have made it known that I
wanted to step down as Secretary. It has been an honor and privilege to have served for the past
two years. Meeting and getting to know many members, and working with the dealership and
officers has been a rewarding experience.
I will continue to be a member of the chapter and hopefully will be able to help out with things as
the year progresses.
To quote some famous entertainer, “Thanks for the Memories”

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Fall Chaps Que Recap
It was overcast and looking like rain - but we got lucky. The evening’s ride to Johnny Brown’s
Country Fixins of Hogansville proved to be perfect. Chaps were optional on the way down but
temperatures dictated that they were definitely in order for the night ride back.
Six intrepid souls showed their mettle with BK volunteering to be the sweep vehicle for our jaunt
to the country.
At least one person asked the all-important question upon our arrival, “Where the heck are we?”
Other endearing remarks were: “Don't leave without me – I'll never find my way home” and “Are
we still in Georgia?”
The atmosphere of the old cabin eatery and the antiques galore put you in the mood for good
vittles and conversation. And yes, they DO serve sweet tea!
Just like Dirt told me – super good steaks and the BBQ was grand.
I don’t think anyone went away disappointed – or hungry.
Just as we were leaving the restaurant, we observed deer grazing in the darkness of the pasture
along the driveway. No need to say it – we'll be riding on alert status back home. Good thing I left
a trail of bread crumbs for the route reversal back home.

"One-Lane Wooden Bridge Tour"....Rain and Lovin' It!
I designed the route right after my Signal Mountain Ride. I was preparing for this new ride a
week in advance by giving my bike its Winter Wash and Wax...a 3-day adventure. On the third
day, I was listening to the weather report...rain on Friday and 80% chance of rain on Saturday and
Sunday. I thought, well 20% of the time it won't rain. Let's hope the 20% is the time of the ride.
As I drove through harsh rains in North Georgia in my Harley truck on Friday, I thought this
could be miserable and unsafe. I tried the Hotline, no luck in rescheduling. I prayed for the safety
of the Saturday riders. Saturday turned out to be a fair day with improvements in the late
afternoon. My optimism was raised. It peaked further when my 10-year-old son announced to his
Mom. I am riding with Dad Sunday. Her eyes rolled as she heard "another family day gone with
the wind".
We arrived at the QT early, so it was time for a "convenient" breakfast for the budding
athlete....not me, my son. As we exited the store, he says: "Hey, Dad here comes someone". I
flashed back to October's ride...one bike, 4, 6, 12, ...31 BIKES. All right! Suddenly, I returned to
reality. We introduced ourselves, prepared the sign up sheets and dispensed the route and maps.
We made conversation as we waited for KSU...Kick Stands Up...not Kennesaw State University.
Well what a change from the prior ride. We had one bike with two people for this ride. As we
made our way to the convenience store for the KSU bathroom service, my son looks over at me
and says: "Dad, the number of bikes doesn't matter. You and I get to be together with our new
friends." As I opened the door for him, I placed my hand on his shoulder and said: "I love you,
man. Thanks, for coming along".
At KSU there were some sprinkles, but we agreed to ride. We made our way through rural routes
toward Euharlee. We crossed our first one-lane bridge. Our friends, Gerry and Patricia, had never
seen the covered bridge so we stopped there. It was time to put on our rain gear as the rain
picked up. We continued on our route and so did the rain. We crossed the second one lane
wooden bridge...it was somewhat slick. The rain picked up even more, so we headed into
Cartersville via back roads to consider lunch. Our first choice had not opened yet. We discussed
our plans and found out we lived within ½ mile of one another. So I lead them home on back
roads. The rain was relentless, but so was our love for riding. At a four-way stop, we said our
good-byes and well wishes for another ride together in the near future.
As we pulled into our garage at home, it was about 12:30 P.M.. My son said: "That was good
Dad. I loved it. We spent time together and now we can spend the rest of the day with the
family...watching football in front of the fireplace."
All I could think of was his positive perception. It reminded me of a line from a Chris Rice tune:
"Every day is a gift you've been given, Make the most of the time every minute you're living' . . .
"; from "Smell the Color 9" - Chris Rice.
Thanks Gerry and Patricia!
Show your love this Holiday season and every season. Best Wishes from the Magels.

Looking for something to breakup the long winter days? Don't put that bike on mothballs break
out the long handles and leather. As long as the weather is dry, temp will not be an issue. So get
out your best Michelin man suit and hop on the bike. We will be headed to the highest point in

Pizza Farm Dinner Ride
The Pizza Farm restaurant has been open more than 30 years. It is a favorite with the locals. They
serve a variety of foods from pizza, steak and salads. I am sure everyone will find something they
will enjoy.
When we leave Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, we will travel approximately 30 miles to Rockmart,
GA by the way of Braswell Mountain, a nice smooth and slightly curvy ride. Because of the
temperature and curves, this will be a 2-pig ride. You should dress for the cold. They open at 4:00
P.M.. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

“Made In America” Tour Continues
The “Made in America” tour will continue this spring with a combination trip to the Corvette
Assembly Plant and Museum in Bowling Green, KY and then onto Louisville, KY the following
day to tour the Louisville Slugger baseball bat factory. No exact dates have been selected yet but
this ride will most likely happen between mid May and mid June.
While I am still working on exact dates and other details, the schedule looks like this:
Thursday: leave at noon and spend the night in Nashville, TN.
Friday: depart Nashville for Bowling Green, KY (70 miles), tour the Corvette museum and
assembly plant; ride to Louisville, KY (160 miles) that afternoon.
Saturday: tour the baseball bat factory and museum; begin a return trip to Atlanta.
Sunday: arrive back in Atlanta.
The schedule above reflects the fact that there are no Corvette plant tours on Saturday or Sunday
and no bat production occurs in Louisville on Sundays; therefore we are pressed into traveling
during the week to get them both in on a single trip.
This trip should be a lot of fun (don’t we always have fun?) as well as informative, and give
everyone a real sense of pride about what is “Made in America.” I hope many of you will be
planning to go on this ride—I realize it might be difficult to take a couple of days during the week
which is why I am alerting you now to the schedule and approximate time. I will have definite
dates in the February HOGWASH, so make sure to check back on this one.
