DIRECTOR'S REPORT
I’m Never Alone
This past weekend, October 8-9, we had our first installment of our “Made in America” tour with a visit to the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, TN. While most of the group headed home either after the tour or right after lunch, I spent an extra day there as Tommye had surprised me
by coming over for the weekend from her babysitting duties in Memphis. So it was on Sunday
that I returned home as a solo rider, all by myself. This is unusual for me as normally I am always
at least with Tommye and usually other riders.
As I made my way toward home, I found that although I was “alone” on the road I did not feel alone at all. Everywhere I went, other riders would wave or smile, as if to pass along a communication of “we know how you feel to be out here riding, seeing the scenery and smelling the smells, etc.”. In each small town I passed through, folks would peer out from under the hoods
of their cars, or look up from raking their lawns or whatever and wave. Whether it was from a
sense of envy, admiration or just curiosity, they would take just that small moment to acknowledge me passing by. In one of these moments I was momentarily reminded of why I bought my first Harley---I had decided when I am confined to the front porch, I want to remember the great times I had on my Harley, not wonder what it might have been like to have owned one. All of these small acknowledgments gave me a great sense that I was on the road with someone else looking out for me, and that in the event I needed help, I would be welcome to stop and ask for it. Then of course there are the inevitable gas stop conversations which usually begin with “Where ya’ headed?” which often lead to tips on routes and just sharing stories on an impromptu basis.
As I rode on my way, I recalled a time in northwest Georgia when I stopped to curiously check
out an old ’46 Chevy truck for sale on the side of the road and was invited to sit a while and have
a glass of lemonade. During that front porch visit I learned about the 100-year-old house the
couple was restoring and also found out that both were artists---he a songwriter and poet and his
wife a painter of watercolors. As you might imagine, the conversation began with his having said
“Man, that’s a nice bike”.
I suppose my point here is that there are a lot of nice folks out there in our world and I guess this
ride served as a reminder of that. Too often we get focused on the ones who aren’t so nice. I
think the deal here is that everyone wants to be acknowledged or to have that moment of contact
with another human being, even if one party is in motion and there is not a word said. The Harley
seems to provide the introduction. While this still seems unique to me, I suppose the Davidson
brothers and Bill Harley are not so surprised. In their day, our world was a slower, friendlier
place than today and they probably just assumed it would always be so.
So as you motor along, don’t ever feel that you are alone. Nothing could be further from the
truth.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Iron Horse Lodge
After the Run from Frances Ride was over, a few of us rode up to North Carolina to check out
this new motorcycle campground. The Iron Horse is located off Hwy. 28 between Hwy. 74 and
Deals Gap. They have three lodge rooms, twelve cabin rooms, tent sites, and RV parking. You
can show up on your bike with only your personal items, rent a tent complete with two sleeping
bags, ground pad, and clean towels for each night stay for $35.00. You can check out their
website at www.ironhorsenc.com for more info. I am planning to do an overnight ride up there later this fall or sometime next year. They do require a two-night minimum for the lodge rooms and cabin rooms. My plan is to take a scenic ride up thru North Georgia in North Carolina and stay on a Friday night. Saturday will include some mountain riding and maybe either a rafting trip down the Nantahala River or maybe a train ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Stay at
Iron Horse Saturday night and then return via mountain roads on Sunday. Staying in the
outdoors, either cabin or tent and enjoying nature as opposed to staying in town in a hotel is
appealing to me. If this sounds like something you would be interested in then let me know.
Congratulations to the following people who challenged themselves for the first time and survived
the Dragons Tail. Richard Rose and Jim (sorry I don't recall the last name) took on the Dragon
while on the Southern High Roads Ride. Kenny and Jennifer Bramlett who took on the Dragon
while on the continuation of the Run from Frances Ride. This was also their first Chapter Ride.
Jennifer completed Rider’s Edge earlier this year, and bought a 883 Sportster Custom and now
has a Fat Boy. As for the Dragon, she says "I've done it and I'll never do it again". Yeah right,
she'll do it again. It was Labor Day Weekend and the Crotch Rockets were out in great numbers.
She said she really appreciated those riders with "NO BRAINS" buzzing by like chainsaws.
Members Rides: Raymond Knight wrote to tell of his trip to Pennsylvania and Delaware. He took
eleven days and rode 2100 miles. He got to spend time with family and friends, and attended his
40th high school reunion. He took the tour of the Harley Plant in York, Pa. and stopped by at
Mike's Famous Harley Davidson in New Castle, Del. Raymond recommends doing both if you’re
ever in the area. Raymond also got to visit with and spend the night at the home of a friend of his
from high school. He has not seen his friend in almost 38 years. He also was able to spend time
riding with his brother on his new Road King and got in some riding time with his nephew. If you
have a trip planned to Pennsylvania or Delaware or maybe you never thought about going there
but it sounds like a good place to visit then get with Raymond and he can give you some more
details.
Harland Moody called and told me about his recent trip up north to Canada. He took three weeks
and rode approximately 6000 miles. Look for a future write-up about his adventures.
Terri Varnum recently took a business trip to Wisconsin. While there, she took advantage of the
plant tour in Milwaukee. She wasn't able to ride her bike to Wisconsin, but was the only person
taking the tour who actually owned and rode a Harley. Get with Terri and Raymond if you have
questions about the plant tours.
See you on the road.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Members!
I am looking forward to filling our 2005 ride calendar with rides for you, but to do this I need
your help. I am looking for POSITIVE members who are ORGANIZED, who PARTICIPATE and STRONG leaders, i.e., Road Captains.
If you would like to become or are interested in what it takes to become a Road Captain in 2005,
please plan to attend my Road Captain's Training Class on December 4, 2004 starting at 10:00
a.m. We plan to hold the class at the Courtyard by Marriott just off Thornton Road which is in
the same area as the Country Inn Suites. I will let you know if the location changes.
We will be offering another Group Riding 101 class the same day starting at 2:00 p.m. It is open to everyone, new members, new riders, experienced riders, (old) long time members, everyone. For those of you who are new to group riding, you will benefit and gain additional skills from this class because group riding is not covered in Rider’s Edge class. There will be a $10.00 charge to offset the cost of materials. You will receive a small booklet that will fit in you saddlebags or windshield bag and a vest pin similar to the Rider’s Edge pin. You will view a video on group
riding and we will go for a group ride utilizing the techniques that we have learned. You will have
your booklet to carry with you to review from time to time. So come on out and attend the
training classes and let's have a great time next year planning and doing some great rides.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
“Burrrrrrrr”
“Yes” it’s that time of year again. We get up to go on that lunch ride and it’s quite chilly. You’re
thinking, what do I wear? The weather man/woman is calling for it to warm up quite nice
today…lots of sunshine, but we’re leaving early and it’s a fairly long ride. Since we’re going to be out that way, there is always a point of interest somewhere that we would like to ride to after lunch. That means this could turn into an all day ride and it will probably be dark and cold again before we get back home.
It’s simple, “layers”. It is well known that we stay warmer if we dress in layers. Besides, it gives you a chance to take off a little at a time as the day warms up.
I’m going to give you some tips for this chilly time of year and for those times that are just
downright cold.
Let’s start at the top and work down. Of course a helmet works well. We lose most of our body heat out the top of our heads. Add a doo rag under it for another layer, better yet, one of those
thin, soft, fleece hats fit well under your helmet. A good pair of goggles to keep the cold wind
out of your eyes (when they’re watering bad it’s hard to see where you are going or what is in front of you) if you don’t have a shield on your helmet. A scarf or hanky around your neck sure
helps in order to keep the air from rushing down into your jacket. You can pull it up over your
chin/nose on those really cold mornings. You will definitely need a good jacket to break the wind
off of you. Put several layers underneath, add a vest. A pair of chaps is a must. Over the ankle
boots are always a good idea. An extra pair of socks can sometimes help, however if you can’t
wiggle your toes because your boots to tight you won’t get good circulation and your feet will
still get cold. Sometimes an extra pair of socks will make your feet sweat and in turn, they get
cold because your socks are full of moisture. Can’t forget about gloves, you’ll need gauntlet gloves to keep the air from rushing up your sleeves. A lot of this stuff is made in synthetic
material, but good old leather (from head to toe) is just really hard to beat. Don’t forget HD is
making a lot of articles of clothing that are heated and will just down right keep you as nice and
warm as you possibly can get when it’s cold.
Let’s not forget about the possibility of getting caught in a cold rain. It’ll take the fun out of riding really quick. A good rain suit is always good to pack when there is just a small chance of
precipitation. Actually it can be used as a wind breaker and it will do a great job in holding in the
heat if you are underdressed.
Dressing appropriately is something we need to plan in order to enjoy the ride. Hypothermia is a
condition of subnormal body temperature. It can cause a broad range of conditions such as the
loss of concentration, slowing of your reaction time, and loss of smooth, precise muscle
movement. None of which you can’t afford to happen when you’re on a motorcycle.
So, plan your ride, plan what you are wearing or what you may need to take along. Enjoy your
ride no matter what the temperature is outside.
Until next time “be safe” and keep the shinny side up.

March of Dimes
I would like to express my gratitude to all of our Chapter Members who joined me for the March
of Dimes ride this year. We have the best members with the biggest hearts! ATLANTA HOG
CHAPTER finished 3RD in overall money raised by large groups. You are the best! Thanks for always being there and showing your support!
Also, congratulations to our Chapter members, John Christiansen who won a Fat Boy and Sharon
Bessette who won a Road King at the event.
Share House News
The Share House recently lost some funding in the form of grants and is reaching out to the
community for assistance. We will once again try to provide support for them during the
Holidays.
Thanksgiving
I will be placing a box at the dealership to collect can goods and other nonperishable items (beans,
instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, Jello, cornbread mix, canned ham, etc.) There are six
families in transitional housing that we would like to provide for. (Needed by November 20)
Christmas
Once again we will be placing angels to adopt on the Christmas tree at the dealership. The
child/mom’s name and age will be on the angel. Their wish list will be in a notebook under the
tree. Gifts will need to be wrapped with a copy of the angel attached. They will need to be at the
dealership by December 12, 2004. On Saturday, December 18, 2004 we will have a ride for the
Share House with Santa as our special guest.
Atlanta Chapter Holiday Party
Mark your calendars and make plans to attend the Chapter Social on Friday, December 10, 2004
from 7:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M. at the dealership. Bring a gift for Share House and receive an
additional 10% off merchandise (excluding motorcycles) for a total discount of 20%. Food and
beverages will be provided. Please note that this social is for Chapter members only (plus one
guest). You must show your current Atlanta HOG Chapter membership card at the door. See
you there!

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Jack Daniel’s Tour Recap
We had a nice turn out for the first piece of the “Made in America” tour with a visit to
Lynchburg, TN home of the Jack Daniel’s distillery, with about 20 bikes and 25 or so folks
coming along. Thanks again to Big John for bringing the group up to Resaca, GA and enduring a
tortuous ride on GA 92. It took almost an hour for them to negotiate the 29 miles and we began
our ride from Resaca about an hour or so later than planned and most folks arrived very hungry,
so we took a moment to let them get some snacks.
Our ride took us up GA 136 into Trenton, GA and then we made our way along the interstate just
long enough to pick up US 41 which took us through Monteagle, TN and then we took side
roads through Lynchburg to get to Tullahoma, our destination for the night. The Hampton Inn
was very nice and a friend of Big John’s named Al came down from Nashville and took us out to
Crockett’s Roadhouse for a very good dinner. After dinner we settled in the hotel breakfast area
for adult beverages and laughs. Next morning while Tommye was getting coffee, she was asked
by one guest if she had heard “that biker gang that came in last night”. She said she did and was glad to be one of them, prompting verbal backpedaling from the man. You just never know what
folks see as a wild biker gang in their eyes. The party continued after I left, but other than laughter it was very tame.
Our tour began at 11:00 A.M. Saturday and our guide, Bettie Patton, was interesting and really
entertaining with her witty remarks along the way. When we arrived at the fermenting tanks
(40,000 gal each) Bettie said she would open one up so everyone could get a big whiff. Randy
Pace took her at her word and we all watched in amusement as the fumes nearly lifted the top of
his head off.
We learned several interesting things on our tour: there is one Master Distiller, Jimmy Bedford,
who is responsible for every drop of Jack Daniel’s sold world wide; there have only been 6-8
Master Distillers in the history of Jack Daniel’s; federal taxes on “in warehouse” product amounts to about $10M per month; single barrel whiskey means every bottle comes from the same barrel (about 240 of them) and only a limited number of barrels are so chosen; “Gentleman Jack” is the only product twice filtered through charcoal; all Jack Daniel’s product is made at this, one and only facility.
Following the tour most everyone ate before heading home in not such good weather. Miss Mary
Bobo’s Boarding House was really good, as advertised, and none of the 12 who ate there left
hungry!
All in all, another fun overnighter!
Tom Sigerfoos, Road Captain
