DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Harley-Davidson: My Drug of Choice
Last winter as I worked on preparing for my Certified Personal Trainer exam. I relearned a lot
about the relaxation response of the human body and what physiologically occurs during and
following exercise. In brief, when one exercises, the build up and release of “endorphins”
provides one with a euphoric feeling or a sense of well-being following exercise that seems to
enhance our ability to deal with stress and to think more clearly. And certainly during moderate
too hard exercise, it is very difficult if not impossible to worry about all those things that we
normally do. All of which is why exercising on a daily basis is recommended. Did you know that
laughter also works in a similar fashion with regard to those endorphins?
It occurs to me that we can add other things to our list of activities that will promote this
relaxation response, and while they do not have the other physiological benefits of exercise, they
are nonetheless important and beneficial in reducing stress. Number one has to be going for a
good ride on your Harley and having some laughs with friends. We recently met a couple at the
Hiawassee Arts Fair (August 27-28) who exemplify just that. The guy is 67 and looks about 55,
and loves life and riding. Full of jokes and mischief, he is always looking for the next chuckle and
one cannot help but laugh along. Not quite the story teller that Big John is, he is still entertaining
and fun to be with. If you need a stronger prescription, add in gorgeous scenery and some
exhilarating curves along with the laughter. Think about it----how many times have you gone
back to your routine on Monday (whatever it is) following a good day or weekend on your bike
and relived the experience over coffee with friends all the while getting those “ride feelings” back just a little bit?
I do need to reemphasize though the part about being mentally ready to ride. If you are really in a
bad emotional state, you need to calm down a good bit before hitting the road. While I said that
you will find it hard to worry while you are actually exercising, there are times when one can be
too emotionally wrought to even begin a workout----and the same goes for riding. If you are
seriously “mentally elsewhere” stay off your bike until a later time. For normal decompression though, take to the road in large, regular doses and make Harley Davidson your drug of choice. Here’s mine: One Dyna Wide Glide to be taken twice a week for at least two to three hours at a time.
You know I’ve heard of doctors actually prescribing massage chairs and swimming pools where the insurance covers it. I wonder if I could talk mine into writing one for a new Road King
Classic! Guess that would provide the folks at Blue Cross/Blue Shield with an opportunity to
release some endorphins of their own.
More Raffle Thanks
In thanking various folks for their contribution to the raffle success in last month’s issue, I left out recognizing Kim and Gloria Preston as well as Rene’ Durham for the huge contribution they made by selling so many tickets. Thank you ladies! I apologize for the oversight.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
Tips On Keeping You and Your Bike Cool
With summer rapidly heating up in most parts of the state, many riders will be heading out on their bikes for frequent road trips. However, the enjoyment of summer has a way of making us forget that having fun in the sun can also lead to overheated motorcycles and overheated riders.
Heat is the cause of many broken-down bikes and vehicles we see so often on the side of the
freeway. Heat can also be the cause of the motorcycle driver ending up in dangerous situations.
Here are some precautions to take to avoid mechanical failure and keep yourself running cool all
summer long.
First, proper maintenance greatly decreases the chances of an overheated bike. This includes
regular oil changes (engine, transmission, and brake). For maximum piece of mind, take your bike
to the dealership for a complete summer checkup.
To keep yourself cool and in control when summer temperatures climb, you must also keep your
body temperature in the proper range. Riding when the outside temperature is greater than 90
degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous to your health. Unless you take the proper care to keep your
body temperature under control, rides as short as an hour can result in heat prostration or
sunstroke. Other suggestions include:
-keep your trips short
-take frequent pit-stops
-drink plenty of water throughout your day and trip
-avoid becoming agitated or impatient
-wear breathable riding gear designed to let your body cool down.
While these tips may sound simple, they can make a huge difference in keeping you from
becoming one of those broken-down bikes on the side of the road, as well as in ensuring your
safety.

TECH TIP
Hello again from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. Well, unless you’re riding out a hurricane in
sunny south Florida or a cold day in Washington state, it won't be long until some of you will be
looking to do some winter storage. Here are a couple of tips for you.
1. Make sure you fill your fuel tank to the fullest point. This will ensure that you will not have any
open air inside, which can bring with it condensation (water in your fuel).
2. Change all of your fluids and filters before storage. Get your engine warm to ensure all contaminants are out of the power train.
3. Make sure the air pressure in your tires and shocks (if applicable) are correct. If possible use a motorcycle lift to raise the tires off of the ground. This will prevent getting flat spots in your tires from sitting.
4. If you do not have one, purchase a trickle charger for your charging system. They can be left on your battery 24/7 and maintain your battery when your motorcycle is not in use. This way you will have a fully charged battery when you get ready for spring riding season.
During the up coming winter season, we will give you some riding tips for navigating through ice and snow.

Jack Daniel’s Distillery Tour Reminder
Join us for the first installment of the “Made in America” tour when we visit the Jack Daniel’s Distillery on October 8-9th. One thing I forgot to mention in the September HOGWASH in all the ride details is that this is a four 4-pig ride. Hotel accommodations and other ride details are in that issue. Check it out and join the fun! (available at www.atlantahog.com)
Renaissance Pineisle Resort at Lake Lanier
Saturday, October 23rd is a ride you won't want to miss. (4-pig) It will have something for everyone and includes an optional overnight stay at the Renaissance Pineisle Resort on Lake Lanier. I've planned a full day trip to two of Georgia's most scenic waterfalls...Tallulah Gorge and
Toccoa Falls. After visiting the Falls, you have the option of staying overnight at the Renaissance
Pineisle Resort at Lake Lanier for a group rate of $99. This includes a double occupancy room
and a full breakfast buffet on Sunday.
First, let me tell you about the route I've planned. We will leave from the Chevron station at I-75 and Chastain Road in Kennesaw. Our trip will be mostly back roads through Dawson and Lumpkin counties which will ultimately lead us to Tallulah Gorge. After stopping for some
photos, well will continue a few miles over to Toccoa Falls. Here, you will be able to stand at the
bottom of a spectacular waterfall crashing down from 187 feet above. From Toccoa, we will
proceed south to Lake Lanier. If you are interested in staying overnight, the Renaissance Pineisle
Resort has offered a special $99 double occupancy rate for our group. On Saturday night, they
will have their famous Tiki Bar running at full speed with a band and plenty of food and
beverages. Saturday night dinner and beverages are on your own...the price is not included in the
$99. (Cookout type foods...hotdogs, burgers, keg 'O' beer, soft drinks, etc.). There is a Sunday
morning breakfast buffet included with your overnight stay.
The ride officially ends at Lake Lanier. Whether you stay for the night, or not, this is a full day ride with excellent scenery and time well spent with friends.
If interested in the overnight portion, contact the Renaissance Pineisle Resort at 770-831-5300 and tell them you are with the Atlanta H.O.G. group.
Meet: 8:30 a.m.

Catfish Den
We will travel north to Canton and then west to Cartersville across the north end of Lake Allatoona. From Cartersville, we will head south along highway 41 to it junctions with
Highway 92. We will then take Highway 92 through Hiram and down to the Catfish Den. They have catfish and chicken, “all-you-can-eat meals” for less than $10.00 per person. This should be a fun and easy early fall dinner ride. Everyone should makes plans to come out and join us. We will meet at the Chevron at I-75 north exit 271, Chastain Road, at 2:30 p.m. and leave at 3:00 p.m.

Signal, a Maiden Voyage
Come join me on my maiden voyage as Ride Captain to Signal Mountain, TN. As a former
resident of Signal Mountain, I have explored many of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Signal Mountain has great history from the Civil War, beautiful vistas and its own "TAIL"...the
"W" road. We will start the journey via scenic back roads of North GA...hwy. 278, 100 and 27...
which will enable us to move swiftly toward the top of Lookout Mountain to observe the real
daredevils...hang gliders. From there, we will commence down the northwest slope of Lookout,
into the valley and across the Sequatchie River for a lunch at a great river hideaway at the base of
Signal Mountain. When I say it’s on the river...it’s on the river...you can clean the frog leg bones off your plate without leaving your seat!
After lunch, we will make the trek up Signal Mountain! We will enjoy the steep grade and curves
of the "W" road, which has three points where only one car can pass at a time...and one bike. A
small "Taste of the Tail"...for you “Deal’s Gapers”. Then across the top of the mountain for the beautiful vistas at Edwards Point, Old Brown Church and Falling Waters. The ride will officially end at the north end of Signal Mountain. However, I will have three alternate routes planned for
the return...a swift passage to Hotlanta, a loop route through Sequatchie Valley and another to
Fall Creek Falls State Park. We will be able to satisfy everyone's needs for time, curves and safety.
So lets Signal in the Fall with my new adventure as a Ride Captain for our Chapter! Your
suggestions are welcomed!

March of Dimes Ride
Please join me on Sunday, October 3, 2004 for the March of Dimes Ride. We will meet at the
dealership at 10:00 and leave at 10:30 for Lakewood where the official ride will begin. Last year
I issued a challenge to all of our members - I wanted to show everyone what a great Chapter we
have. You stepped up to that challenge and we had close to 100 bikes participating. I am asking
once again ... please join me on this ride and support not only our Chapter, but the March of
Dimes, an organization that does so much for our community.

ROAD TRIP RECAP
Southern Highroads Trail Recap
The Southern Highroads Trail ride was another good one this year and we saw 27 bikes with
about 31 total folks coming along. We had several newcomers this time and Ron West brought
his daughter Kelley who was visiting from Maryland.
Friday was a good day and everyone seemed to enjoy the new wrinkle, Wayah Road, just outside
of Nantahala, NC as a back way into Franklin. We got there just in time, around 7 p.m., as about
9 p.m. or so (right after dinner) the bottom dropped out with quite a lightning show thrown in.
We had to cancel our plans to eat at The Chef and His Wife back in town due to the threatening
weather, but we found Willy’s BBQ right up the hill from the hotel and it was really good.
Everything stayed dry until right after we ate---then all the bikes got a bath!
Saturday morning we opted to forego the portion of the ride from Cashiers to Brevard and north
to the Blue Ridge Parkway due to impending bad weather. This took about 115 miles off of our
day, and instead we took NC 107 north from Cashiers to Sylva and then 19/74 past Bryson City
to Wesser where we had lunch on the Nantahala River. Following lunch several of us headed
toward Robbinsville and the Dragon’s Tail but about 10 miles out, we got turned around by heavy
rain. We got to the Nantahala Village Inn around 3 p.m. or so and a few struck out toward
Deal’s Gap and the Dragon’s Tail from a different direction where the weather turned out to be better. Everyone else sat on the porch enjoying funny stories from John Riggs while having
“adult” beverages. After dinner we did the same and also had as background music the harmonica playing of Richard Jackson, a.k.a. “Harps”.
Sunday was much better weather deal as the sun triumphantly returned and we enjoyed a loop
ride around Lake Santeelah, stopping at the Dragon’s Tail for an hour or so to let those go who
wanted to try it. Then we went past Cheoah Dam and into Robbinsville in order to pick up the
Cherohala Skyway. What a fantastic road! After lunch, we took some new back roads out of
Tellico Plains, TN, with the ride eventually splitting up at the junction of TN 315 and TN 30 as
some headed toward US 411 and others wanted to pick up I-575 out of Blue Ridge. By the way
Tasha, Tommye and I figured out that we were the jinx on the meal times! Once again we were
the last to be served.
All in all it was a great ride and thanks to everyone for riding safely. I can’t wait to do it again.
Tom Sigerfoos, Road Captain
Run From Frances Ride Recap
With Hurricane Frances bearing down on the Florida coast and headed for Georgia it seemed like a good idea to head for the mountains, so that's what we did. We had 16 bikes and a total of 20 people who took off Saturday morning for a ride thru some of North Georgia's most beautiful land. We did a lot of curves and had a great time. There were a few members and some guests
who had never been on a Chapter ride and commented on how much they enjoyed it. On a back
country road (Hwy. 180 from Suches to Vogel State Park) in one of the few straight stretches we
even had the opportunity to stop and talk with a local deputy and a couple of GSP's finest. They
were conducting a license checkpoint and thankfully we all rode away without any additional
paper in our pockets, if you know what I mean. We were also entertained by the pickup truck
driver who thought he would just drive around all of us while we were being checked. That was
until the female trooper asked what he thought he was doing and then told us she would just
shoot anybody who ran up on us too fast or tried to go around. As far as paperwork, she said she
wouldn't bother and after she shot them we would just push them off in the woods and forget
about them. This lady is probably in her 60's and very full of fight if you cross her. Later we dined
at Rib Country in Blairsville and it was GOOD! A great ride. Thanks to Tom and Tommye, they
finally had a chance to run sweep, and to Big John Riggs for riding the middle and keeping us all
together. If you missed it, you missed it. Your loss!
