DIRECTOR'S REPORT
HELPING TO MAKE CHANGE
Each year as we close out one riding year and head into another, all of us likely think of the things we want to do the next year, whether it involves new travel destinations or perhaps acquiring new technical riding skills. In any event a sense of commitment and a positive attitude toward what we want to achieve are critical to our success. It is often said "you can do anything you set your mind to;" isn't it helpful though, if your goals are complemented by others who have the same goal?
This year as in many others, the chapter looks forward to many wonderful group rides. How will this year be different from any other? Well, this year several officers with the help from our membership are going to offer group riding classes. We often hear about the great training one receives in Riders Edge and the MSF courses. But, as good as these classes are, none of these really prepare you for riding in larger groups. Recently in one of our business meetings, we heard from several folks about how a ride could have been better if only for several riders whose skills were not what they needed to be for riding in larger groups. Since we want everyone to feel welcome to ride, we wanted to know how to attack this issue in a positive manner. So we came up with several ideas, one of which was perhaps offering a small session in which folks new to riding in groups could be introduced to that aspect of riding. And if you think about it, all of us could probably use a formal refresher in this area.
A group riding class is in the works that does not require a licensed instructor to lead it; in other words the chapter itself can offer some formal training in this area. The class is a group seminar which is led by a class leader working through a video tape and the class participating via workbooks, discussion and an actual ride. We don't have all the details worked out yet but look for things to happen early in the year. The other aspect is that this class will be very inexpensive to you -- no more than say $10 a head.
So if riding in groups is something you have avoided, the chapter is here to help you make your Harley experience all it can be. Riding a Harley is a great experience but riding in a larger group of varied personalities and sharing a meal along the way, spending the day together just can't be beat. Camaraderie doesn't exist outside of a group and this word is almost synonymous with "Harley ownership." So if your goal is to ride in groups, our goal is to help you feel more comfortable in doing so. If you have been riding in groups for a while, check out the class and see how much you really know. "The more
you know, the better it gets!"

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
THE FAMILY GROWS
They say when you buy a Harley you become part of a family. Well I guess that's true to a certain extent, but I don't really think you become a part of that family until you actually become involved. I mean go on some rides, get involved in some
activities, meet some new people, make new friends, etc. During 2003 this chapter held many group rides but there are two that will always stand out in the memories of those who attended. I am referring to the Southern High Roads and the Gatlinburg Rides. The weather could not have been better, the routes were awesome, but what made the rides so great were the people -- some I knew, some I had never met. There are interesting things you can learn about these family members. For instance, Joe and Judy Cobb recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary, or Jim Crouch who works for Marriott and has a rustic cabin that he gets away to with his daughter and son. By the way, this cabin still has no electricity, but it now has running water. There is John and Sonja Riggs, they both work in the medical profession, and John always has good stories to tell from his days as a paramedic. Scott and Corolla Vandiver, Corolla works as a dental hygienist and Scott works for Delta Airlines. Scott also competes regularly in shooting competitions and has done very well. Then there is Richard and Debra Jackson, Debra teaches school and Richard can entertain the night away with the playing of his harmonica. These are just of a few of the special people who have become part of my family. There are many others but space will not allow me to mention all of them.
As we begin a New Year and many rides are planned, you should try to participate in some of them. Meet someone new, get to know the members of this family. My family will grow this year, will yours?
See you on the road.

MEMBER COMMENT(s)
Wow! What a wonderful ride Tom & Terri led us on New Year's Day! Buckner's was fantastic with lots of greens, black-eyed peas and way too much peach cobbler! This was the anniversary of my first chapter ride. I remember being there at
the sign-up table last year very nervous watching everyone chat and greet wondering how the day would turn out. The day went fine and now 11,000 miles later I KNOW that I fit in. I can ride with the girls or jump the guys at a red light and just giggle when I blow them out (I put all those extra lights on the rear of my sporty just for these occasions guys! ). It has been a great year for me, Gabby and David, my son, but this year will be better, and this all happened because of folks like Nicky, Phil, Tweet, James, Leslie, Kimmy, Wendy, Cesar, Chris & Larry (Riders Edge) and the rest of my new family. So let's do lots of rides this year and have a good, safe and fun time at it. And for Andy, bring on those little piggies -- I'm ready to count them off.
Happy New Year!
