DIRECTOR'S REPORT
RISK AND REWARD
It is said that life is a calculated risk. Inherently, everything we do involves a balancing of the risks and rewards associated
with a particular activity. Many of these activities are essential to our daily living and depending on what our vocations are could be driving in Atlanta commuter traffic, climbing telephone poles, or working in a high rise building. The last four years have shown that simply trying to save for retirement is risky as well. Other choices that carry risk could be considered
"optional", leisure time activities such as riding our motorcycles, sky diving, or thousands of other things.
I think many regard the first group as "givens" and don't think much about them. Or perhaps they accept them in the sense that they do not have much choice, and the balancing is almost instinctive or second nature. But they might regard the "optional" group as foolish or too high risk and think that it doesn't make much sense to deliberately place one's self in harm's way. But aren't these the things that really "add to life" and make our lives truly "living" rather than just "existing"? It seems to me they are----these are the things that make our work week worth the effort and allow us to come back most Mondays refreshed and ready to endure another five days of "routine". On the chapter Yahoo site, I said my favorite quote is "Life is not a spectator sport", meaning that I think you have to participate in things outside of regular, daily life to get the most out of living. It is these outside activities where we challenge ourselves to do more, make new friends and bond with others doing the same thing which is really the basis of enriching our lives. But, one must balance the perceived risk with the rewards of whatever it is we might choose to do.
So as it relates to motorcycling, how do I balance risk and reward? Surely, in its beginning motorcycling seems really dangerous as we try to get familiar with the functioning of the machine, the fact we are more physically exposed to danger
as compared to being in a car, etc. I can't think of anyone who was not initially intimidated with the idea of riding a motorcycle. So, I believe there is a process or logical path to follow which begins with the understanding that there is risk and that I choose to accept it. But this risk can be minimized. Secondly, I think we should be educated to the maximum degree possible concerning the activity we are about to undertake, whether it is riding a motorcycle, sky diving, working with power tools, or whatever. Begin slowly and always stay within your skill limits---can you recall how you felt on your bike the first time you went out into a "live traffic" situation compared to how you feel now? Chances are you now are riding aware rather than riding afraid, and are feeling the joy of being on the road, more relaxed, but always ready--"in the zone". Finally, be physically and mentally ready to ride (dive, jump, etc.) every time you go out; be able to truly focus on what you are doing without being distracted or tired.
Living involves participating! No, I am not advocating that you undertake something that really frightens you or to become an "adrenalin junkie" so you can really "live", but if an activity really does have a draw for you even though there might be undertones of danger, just try to evaluate the opportunity it affords, figure out what steps to take to minimize the dangers and make your decision accordingly. We must accept the risks if we are to experience the rewards. In a recent article I read about Lauren Hutton, she said she has to be on the edge to feel alive-- "The great thing about dangerous situations is that
you're so alive. You're learning. You're totally aware and you're fantastically young…". Most of us probably have a "close call' story or two about our riding and perhaps other hobbies we pursue in our off time. The fact we continue these activities is an indication that we understand the risk vs. reward proposition. Perhaps sharing our perspective on this will help others who are struggling with being comfortable in their chosen activity, and in particular, motorcycling.
THE CURSE OF TALKING ROCK
On both of my rides to Fender's Diner in Cornelia and to Helen, GA, we took I-575 to Talking Rock and proceeded east. On both occasions, we had problems with motorcycles; in the case of the Fender's ride we were able to solve it and move
on, but the Helen ride saw the rider (and our sweep + a volunteer) waiting for a tow truck. And as most of you know I have become infamous for making a wrong turn in this tiny town, passing the flea market about three times trying to find my way. So I have had my share of difficulties in leading rides through this place and I am beginning to wonder if perhaps we are riding over some ancient Indian burial ground or whatever. Maybe as one person said, it really is a place out of the "Twilight Zone". Was that really Rod Serling working behind the counter in the antique shop? Go figure!
FALL REMINDER
Our ride to Helen Oct. 4th did not witness much color on the leaves, but colorful or not we all know they will fall sooner or
later. Remember that leaves, especially if wet, are like riding on grease. So now in the twisties of north Georgia you have another hazard to contend within addition to gravel in the curves! Ride wise--the reward is worth the risk!
UPDATE ON RONNIE GODWIN
I was able to visit with Ronnie on September 29 which I think was about a day or so before he went home. Ronnie is in good spirits and very thankful that his injuries are no worse than they are. He has also set a very aggressive schedule for himself ---he plans to be in a prosthetic and back to work by the end of the year! He talked about how intense his physical therapy and rehab has been and stated he is definitely up for the challenge. It is Ronnie's attitude and perspective on his accident that inspired my cover article for this month. My visit with him indicates that while he wishes none of this had happened, he knew and accepted the risks involved because he enjoyed riding. It made me think back to our outing to Asheville Oct. 4-5, 2002 where Ronnie rode his first long day of curves on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the big but somewhat relieved smile on his face of that accomplishment. He had stretched himself a bit and felt better for it.
Ronnie, we are glad you are home and that the healing process is moving along as rapidly as it is. We all look forward to seeing you back here soon---to say you are missed is an understatement of huge proportions, and we continue to hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
20 RIDERS NEEDED FOR FESTIVAL OF TREES PARADE
Helen Carlos has contacted me on behalf of Jocelyn Dorsey at WSB-TV-Channel 2 News (parade chairperson) to recruit 20 riders to ride in the Festival of Trees Parade which takes place on December 6, 2003 from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon. The Parade announcers will be making mention of Harley-Davidson's 100th Anniversary this year in their parade coverage. Here are the requirements:
1) Riders must be riding 100th Anniversary model motorcycle, per the above.
2) Riders must wear helmets - no problem, it's a state law.
3) Riders are asked not to smoke during the parade.
4) One rider (the lead rider) is asked to carry a passenger to display our chapter flag.
I have asked Helen to get the riders at the front of the parade to avoid the problems of overheating, worn out clutch hand, and in general the problems you might expect to encounter if you were following a marching band.
RIDERS ARE ASKED TO MAKE A FIRM COMMITMENT TO DO THIS. IF YOU VOLUNTEER, DO NOT BACK OUT AT THE LAST MINUTE, PLEASE--THE PARADE WILL BE COUNTING ON YOU!
Please contact Tom Sigerfoos or Terri Varnum to volunteer for the parade. If more than 20 can ride, I will let you know. If more than 20 volunteer we will select you on a first come, first serve basis.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
GATLINBURG, TN RECAP
What an awesome weekend! The weather was just what I had ordered. I did spend a few hours looking at the Weather Channel, trying to figure out if hurricane Isabel was going to wash us out. I thought for a time it might be another wet weekend. We made it there and back without any problems. Thanks to Jim and Rene' for the trailer backup anyway. We made it through the Dragon's Tail without any problems except when a bear ran out in front of David and Cindy Smith. David locked down on the brakes and I guess all the tire screeches scared the bear, and he turned around and ran back into the woods. That gave us a lot to talk about at the next stop. Most of us rode over to Maggie Valley, NC on Saturday and picked up our H.O.G. pin at the Rally in the Valley. We rode the Blue Ridge Parkway -- what a piece of road for
motorcycling -- the big sweeping curves where you can see for miles and the most beautiful mountains. It was a shame we could not have ridden further, maybe someday. The leaves had a little burnt orange tint to them in the higher elevation but most seem to be turning brown and falling off the trees. If you ever need someone to back you up on a ride, Terri Varnum and Tom Arnold are outstanding. It made my job leading, so much easier to look back and see them and know everything was hanging together. Thanks Terri and Tom for a great job!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
And so begins our season of giving to Share House. While we do help Share House throughout the year, the end-of-year holiday season really kicks things up. Our chapter members have very generous hearts and have always contributed to the
Share House without reserve. On behalf of Share House, I thank you all for your generosity and goodness.
Share House Halloween
Thanks to all of you for bring candy and trick-or-treat bags/buckets for the children of Share House. They were so excited to get the goodies since most of them are not allowed to go trick-or-treating.
Share House Thanksgiving
Once again this year, we will be making Thanksgiving baskets to give to the women and children who are in the Share House transitional housing. The baskets we prepare will hopefully include everything necessary for a complete Thanksgiving dinner (plus a few extras). The chapter donates gift certificates for turkeys for each basket, and starting November 1, 2003, we will begin collecting non-perishable food items from you to complete these baskets. Please drop your contributions in the box located in the Service Area of the dealership.
Share House Christmas
Shortly after Thanksgiving, there will be a Christmas tree inside the dealership decorated with Angels. Each Angel belongs to a mother or child currently residing at Share House. These Angels need to be adopted for Christmas. Without our help, many of them will go without anything for Christmas. I don't know about you, but the thought of a child waking up Christmas morning with nothing under the tree brings tears to my eyes. Please consider adopting an Angel (or two).
Each Angel has the mother/child's name, age, clothes and shoe size on it. In addition, there is a 3-ring binder under the tree that has each Angel's personal wish list for you to use as a guide (if you wish). Please bring your wrapped gift, with the Angel taped to the top, to the Christmas party on December 13th. If you purchase more than one gift for your Angel (which we encourage you to do), please just copy the Angel and be sure to tape an Angel to each gift. If you chose not to adopt an Angel but still want to help, you can purchase a gift and bring it to party, unwrapped, and we will find a child or mother to
give it to. Remember, by bringing a gift to the Christmas party, you will receive an additional 10% off all purchases made during the party (except bikes of course).
The Toy Ride for Share House will be December 20th. We will meet at the dealership at 10:30 and leave at 11:00 a.m. This is an escorted ride to Hunter Park in Douglasville, where we will have a Christmas party for the children (in the building there). Santa Claus will be there, and we will have craft activities for you to do with the children. The children will actually not be able to open their gifts at the party, but will receive a goody bag of smaller gifts from Santa to take home - they will save their other gifts for Christmas morning. The party should be done by 1:00 p.m. This ride goes rain or shine, cold or warm. Last year there were 58 bikes; let's see if we can beat that number this year!
Ladies of Harley Dinner
Let's have a pre-holiday dinner to celebrate being ladies! Dinner will be on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m. at the
Ruby Tuesday's on Thornton Road (just south of the dealership). Look forward to seeing you there!!

SECRETARY/DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
H.O.G. AROUND THE SHOP
The March of Dimes Ride for Healthier Babies is over. It looks like the total money collected will be in the $275,000 range. Our Chapter received credit for more than $23,000. This money included a percentage of the Dealers donation of the 2003 Dyna Low Rider. Brian Lucy seemed to think the actual cash contribution from the chapter was about $16,000. Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. came in third for the most collected.
No matter how much we collected it all goes to a good cause. Considering this charity was added to the club plans for the year I think we did pretty well. I want to personally thank all of the people that volunteered at the bike shows and those that participated in the various activities including the ride on Sunday. Special thanks go to Terri Varnum for organizing the ride from the shop on Sunday and keeping everyone together. Sharon and I took 47 envelopes for registration, and Terri said there were more than 90 people that participated in the ride from the chapter.
I think we should follow the dealership's lead next year for this Charity. MDA and Share House were to be the official charities of the chapter, and we need to give those as much support as possible. We have Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up for Share House. I like this Charity because what we do directly benefits local women and children in the community without any outside involvement, or need to compete.
I am still recovering from my shoulder surgery, and will be getting ready to ride again after the first of November. Looks like no riding at the State Rally. Guess I will be working the desk and playing Biker Bingo. See you all there.

GIFT WRAPPING TABLE
As we did last year, Ladies of Harley will have gift wrap tables set up in the dealership to wrap all your Harley gift purchases. There is no charge for gift wrap, but donations are accepted and all money collected will go directly to the Share
House in the form of a grocery store gift certificate. The gift wrap table starts on November 30, 2003 and will run through December 21st. Hours for the table will be one hour after opening to one hour before closing. Volunteers are desperately needed so if you like wrapping gifts (or just want to help), please let me know what day/hours you'd like to help. Thanks
very much.
