DIRECTOR'S REPORT
ALL IN THE FAMILY
It is said that when one buys a Harley, he or she also gets a huge, instant family to go along with it. As I write this, what surely has to be the largest family reunion ever has just taken place in Milwaukee -- brothers and sisters from all over the country and all around the globe converging on the city which housed the little wooden shack where the Harley story began 100 years ago. I feel certain that Bill Harley and the Davidson brothers are looking down now thinking "this is so cool, and who would have ever thought our making of motorcycles would have led to this." The "this" of course being this sense of
family which no manufacturer of any product could have ever envisioned.
It is indeed very unique that we Harley owners all feel this sense of family. This is a major part of what separates us from other bike owners, and to be certain, some feel this more than others, but in its least degree, we all feel a very definite, positive sense of belonging and knowing that someone is watching out for us whenever we are on the road. This is our legacy and I think our obligation -- to watch out for each other on the road and in general to care for our fellow rider. I feel joy when I see it working and surprise when I do not. The weekend of August 22nd, on our way down to the Killer Creek 100th Anniversary Kick-off at the Hard Rock Café, Tommye and I stopped to offer aid to a couple on the opposite side of the highway, stranded next to their Ultra Classic which had a flattened back tire. On our way to this point we had passed at least a dozen bikes headed to North Georgia for the weekend, a few of which were Harleys, and all of which would have
had to have passed this couple standing there. When we arrived at their bike, we were both stunned and disappointed to hear the couple report that in the hour they had been there, we were the first to stop to see if they were OK. I suppose some passers-by might have assumed they were admiring scenery, but would it have hurt to have stopped and asked? As it turned out, they were lucky enough to have Roadside Assistance (already en route); as we left, I felt that if nothing else we had restored their faith in their fellow biker just by taking the time to turn around and see if they were all right. I felt good in the fact that perhaps we had renewed their belief that they were not alone; that a fellow "biker" gave a damn.
I saw this family spirit working on the following Sunday afternoon when we stopped by the shop and met a couple from Clearwater, FL en route to Milwaukee who were in the shop with stator (electrical charging) problems. Nicky had taken
them right in and had a mechanic on their problem immediately with the promise they would be on their way by day's end. The couple, Dick and Shirley McCall, was ecstatic about the treatment they were getting, and you could see the relief in their faces. I have seen this several times before at our dealership and they have always been wonderful about taking in folks on the road and giving them priority. Why would they do this? It's very likely this couple (as well as the others) will never be back and never spend another dollar there. I think it has to do with caring about the person and the situation they find themselves in. A feeling of whether they spend a buck there or not, they're "family" and they are in spot at the moment and need help. I've read many tales of family taking care of family and while most of the time it seems to be reported around the time of a "motorcycle exodus" such as Sturgis or Milwaukee, it is always great to hear.
But let us gently remind ourselves not to let this be like Christmas where we might feel it only once year or so. Family is always family and always deserves our consideration and help. So take care of your fellow biker when you are on the road -- whether he is on a Harley or a Honda!! Remember -- what goes around, comes around.
AND SPEAKING OF FAMILY
No sooner had I written the cover article for this month than the tragic accident occurred involving Ronnie Godwin. What has taken place since then in terms of response from our members, shop employees and virtually everyone who knows Ronnie speaks volumes to the concept of family. The outpouring of prayers and well wishes for Ronnie has been huge and hopefully by now Ronnie is reading many of those cards, banners and the "well wishers" book.
Ronnie, I can speak for everyone in saying your "family" cares deeply about you and prays daily for your continued healing and recovery. We all stand ready to do anything we can for you, now and in the days ahead, whatever it might be that you need. We cherish your strong spirit, quick wit, countless impersonations and wonderful smile. We all eagerly look forward to seeing you back here again.
We love ya, man!!!!
JANUARY -FEBRUARY HOG TALES TO FEATURE ATLANTA CHAPTER
The January-February issue of the HOG TALES will feature, in the back, a photo of the Atlanta Chapter. So¼if ever there was one chapter activity you plan to attend, make the Photo Shoot on Saturday, October 25 the one. We would like for
everyone to be here at 9:00 a.m. to assemble for the group photo, which Hank Somma will be shooting for this issue. Everything has to be into H.O.G. by October 30th, so this is a one shot deal. The story will state we have approximately 1100+ members, so we want a huge turn out for the photo.
WHAT: Chapter group photo
WHEN: Saturday, October 25th at 9:00 a.m.
WHERE: Harley-Davidson of Atlanta.
Immediately after the shoot, we will have a ride to Buckner's for lunch.
PARKING PRECAUTION
One of our members who opted for a visit to Myrtle Beach instead of Milwaukee reports walking out to get on his bike for a morning ride only to find his enclosed trailer and brand new Harley, which was inside, stolen. I am not sure of the exact
circumstances but he wanted me to remind everyone to be careful how and where you park. Here are a few tips that may help:
Leave the trailer locked and/or cabled to your truck, if space permits.
Lock your trailer hitch receiver to the hitch.
Lock the tongue of the trailer at all times.
If truck and trailer are separated, cable the trailer to a storm drain, light post or whatever you can find to make it more
difficult to pull away.
Park in a well-lighted area.
Put one side of the trailer on a block and remove one wheel and lock in it your truck.
Finally, make sure you bike is insured to the hilt, including all accessories!!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
AH! Fall in Georgia. We have had some beautiful weather the last few days for riding motorcycles. This doesn't mean that by the time you read this it will still be true. You know the fickle weather of the southeast. The fall is the most beautiful time of the year for me for riding. I love the beautiful colors of the fall foliage and the crisp cool morning and evening.
We have had a great riding experience so far this year. We have had more than our share of great rides from our Ride Leaders. We just had the celebration of the year with the 100th Anniversary for Harley-Davidson and H.O.G. XX
Anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, and the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. 18th Anniversary party. I want to thank John Carroll for welcoming us back to the hanger for this year's party.
I hope every member will be out there riding this Fall and enjoying our passion, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, for another 100 years. Hope to see you on the road soon!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
WOW and double WOW - what a showing we had of lady riders at our August meeting! When I made the call for all lady riders to come up front and show themselves, I bet we had close to 30 women - an incredible impromptu showing! I believe you made quite an impression on the membership -- I don't think people actually realized how many of us there were. Congratulations to all our Ladies of Harley - keep encouraging other women you know to take the leap and start riding their own motorcycle. Maybe, just maybe, one day we'll out-number the men (we can hope, right!).
Ladies of Harley Meeting - It's been a while since we've met, so it's time to get together to discuss the upcoming holidays and our involvement in helping the Share House. I also want to plan our LOH activities for next year. The meeting will be on Monday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the pavilion behind the dealership. Ladies please encourage all the lady riders you know to attend. Hope to see all our Ladies of Harley on the 13th!!
Share House Halloween - This year we will again prepare Halloween goody bags for the Share House children who cannot go trick-or-treating. Donations of candy, small toys, etc for the children of Share House can be placed in the bin located in the Service area of the Dealership. All donations should be dropped off no later than October 24. Thank you for your continued generosity to the Share House.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
RIDING IN THE RAIN
In my Milwaukee Recap article I referred to the weather as wonderful. That was a true statement for the state of Wisconsin. As for the ride back down into Illinois and Indiana, the story changed - drastically. On the ride back we encountered
probably 12 hours (ride time) of rain and poor visibility. The rest of the time was spent sleeping while the pitter-patter of rain continued on the roof (and our bikes). I can tell you for sure that I have never encountered that much rain while riding my motorcycle.
While we rode at a steady 60-MPH, the light rain was annoying yet visibility was adequate. I cannot say the same for heavy rain or tractor-trailers blasting by at 80 MPH. When the trucks and cars would pass us at high speeds they would kick up a
misting wave of water that would completely drench us. Fairings, large windshields, and rain suits were of little defense to the mist-wave. After several hours of riding in these conditions I was soaked to the bone. As the water leaked down around my collar and into my shirt it pointed and laughed at my rain suit. By the time we reached our destination I was walking around making all kinds of squishy and squashy sounds. I had to literally wring out my jeans, socks, and shirt.
How a different helmet could have saved me (from the rain): Last month I gave a meeting presentation about helmet safety and different types of helmets. On that wet trip through Illinois and Indiana I could have probably been a little dryer if I had chosen a different helmet to wear. I own a half-shell, a ¾ helmet, and a full-faced helmet. If I had known how bad the rain was going to be I would have taken either my ¾ helmet with the face shield or my full-faced helmet. Either way, the added protection would have diverted the water down onto my rain suit instead of letting the water hit my face and drain down my neck (and under my rain suit). FYI, another option would be the $35 detachable face shield that mounts up to the HD half-shells.
My NEXT TIME rain suit setup will be:
A full faced helmet (or my ¾ helmet with the face shield);
Full rain suit along with gators for my boots;
Rain Gloves with the left thumb squeegee for my face shield.
Rain riding tips: Riding in the rain requires a different riding approach. While our Dunlops are very good in the rain they do not have as much grip as in dry conditions. While riding in the rain you have to be easy on everything (throttle, braking, turning, leaning). The feel of the bike is a little different and while motorcycle touring, you are usually hauling more gear so the feel of the bike changes even more. Also, prolonged rainy conditions degrades the lubrication of your cables. My throttle cables darned-near stuck on that rainy trip. I almost had a poor man's cruise control due to stuck throttle cables. It was not so bad as to create a dangerous condition but it did feel very bad under my right hand.
Upon returning home my bike was completely covered in a fine film of road funk and the cables were harsh and dried out (clutch and throttle). I would cringe ever time I had to operate the cables due to the lack of lubricant in the control lines. I immediately washed it down and lubricated my cables. After 4-5 hours of nook-and-cranny cleaning and cable maintenance she's back to life and ready for the road.
Every experienced biker I've ever had the pleasure of sharing biker stories with can always recall "the time when" story that usually involved a 10-12 hour motorcycle trip in a rainstorm. Well¼ I now have my "the time when" story that I will recall for years and generations to come - and I have pictures to prove it!
Thanks to my co-riders for ride planning, moral support, the laughs, watching out for me, and letting me watch out for them. Believe it or not, we made it through the slime with a smile (notice the anagram).
Ride safely and keep the shiny side up.
Until we ride again.
FACTOID
Did you know? Alcohol use is a contributing factor in more than 50% of all motorcycle fatalities. In more than 2/3 of multi vehicle crashes, the person driving the car/truck is at fault.

H.O.G. Around The Shop
I hope that everyone that went to Milwaukee had as good a time as Sharon and I did. We saw a bunch of good concerts, met some nice people, and rode in an incredible parade. We arrived at the ZOO around 4:30 a.m., and the streets were deserted. When we pulled out at 9:00 AM the streets were 20 deep on both sides. Seven and a half miles of solid people. What a thrill!
The March of Dimes Ride for Healthier Babies is coming up in less than a month. I will be there but not able to ride. I just had some surgery on my right shoulder on the 9th, so I will be out of commission for about 10 weeks. Please get out there and collect some contributions and come to the ride on the 5th of October.
I know everyone is praying for Ronnie. Hopefully we will be seeing him back soon.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT
MILWAUKEE RECAP
In a word, the Milwaukee experience was fantastic! The weather was wonderful, the city showed open-arms welcome for
all bikers, the activities were well planned and executed, the restaurants were pretty quick with service, and the food was delicious. The range of events was very fulfilling. We had block parties, dealership stops, pin stops, Club H.O.G. XX, vendors upon vendors upon vendors, factory tours, Milwaukee touring, concerts, food and drink, and I can't leave out - Harley-Davidson motorcycles EVERYWHERE.
We encountered many Atlanta Chapter friends/family in Milwaukee which made the trip that much more exciting. A few of us teamed up for impromptu rides around the city for dealership T-shirt stops, factory tours, and lunch stops.
Having our picture made at HD headquarters was memorable. The first day we went for photos, the waiting line of bikes went all the way around the parking lot. We then decided to revisit HQ on the next day for the photo op. The next day we
went back and took our photos with shiny bikes and big smiles. I also came across a sign that showed scheduled weddings at the HQ location - pretty cool.
The 10,000-bike parade was quite an experience. The last time I had seen that many bikes in a parade was at 2001 and 2002 Trail of Tears. Although, this time there was a big difference. We were on sacred HD home turf, watching our sacred HD
motorcycles/friends/family ride by smiling, waving, revving, and honking. The parade was led by the local motor patrol, closely followed by none-other-than Willie G. Davidson (and wife). During the parade of flags we saw flags from all over the world. We also saw our own Dave Devlin and Sharon Feldman ride past waving the Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. flag.
I've often said "There's only one thing that sounds better than a Harley, and that's a group of Harleys." Milwaukee was THE group of groups of Harley Davidson motorcycles. My hats off to all involved with the HD 100th Anniversary events - job well done !!!
