DIRECTOR'S REPORT
ROADWAY ESSENTIALS
With the 4th of July over (and half of the summer, already!) I guess the next big road trip for most folks might be Sturgis or the 100th in Milwaukee in late August. On the other hand, maybe you have taken that big trip or are just about ready to leave.
In any case, extended road travel, like a two or three week journey forces one to think a little differently about what clothing and tools might be regarded as essential when compared to what to take for a simple overnighter closer to home.
The list of things one might want to think about for longer trips include a first aid kit, basic tool kit and of course the right gear for all kinds of weather, depending on where you are headed. I'm sure some folks carry these things constantly.
The basic first aid kit might include such things as betadyne scrubs and antiseptics for scratches and cuts, as well as bandages, Band Aids, scissors, tape and perhaps an ace bandage. It is also helpful to have basic antihistamines for things like allergies, bee stings and various insect bites, as well as aspirin and/or ibuprofen.
The basic tool kit is a bit harder to determine depending on one's mechanical knowledge and ability to fix things. Things like basic Torx, Allen and open end wrenches, a small socket set, Phillips and slot screwdrivers, pliers, a rag or two and likely a pocket multi tool. If you have solid wheels, an emergency tire repair kit is useful also. Another thing a lot of folks don't think about, is the change in their fuel consumption at sustained highway speeds -- it's less and so a basic piece of plastic hose or small siphon kit may mean the difference between a comfortable bed one night versus a makeshift lean to at a roadside. I would also cover some "roadside expedients" (get you by repairs) with my favorite mechanic so I could at least make it to the next town if need be -- subjects like broken or loose throttle cables, slipping belts, etc. Last but not least a cell phone is in order -- now you can call Roadside Assistance and not worry about fixing anything, providing of course you get a signal. Out west, or in the mountains, this can be a concern, so learn to fix some basic things! Don't forget your HD Atlas, too.
Finally clothing must be considered. I am continuously amazed at how many folks I've talked to who head to Sturgis without a rain suit. I guess they figure its summer and a cooling shower would feel good. How about an all day shower
when you are in your last change of clean clothes -- does that sound good? Soaking wet at 70 mph is cold no matter how hot it is! Travel to Canada even in the summer can be precarious, with 70 degrees today and snow tomorrow, so full leathers are in order here as well as electric clothing if you have it. You might not need it but if you do, its' nice to have it. I actually had a ride of 230 miles in July 2000 and it was 40 degrees all the way from Glacier National Park to Banff,
Alberta, Canada. I had on long handles, electrics, leathers and rain gear trying to stay warm.
Yes, packing all this stuff can be a challenge. To help you, the National H.O.G. website has a packing list to assist you. Give it a try -- it helps you to prioritize what you should take by ranking things as essential, nice to have, and "if you have room." Lay it all out and then take what your luggage will allow based on your priorities. Other helpful pointers -- take fewer clothes and do laundry more often; if you are a HD T-shirt junkie, mail them home. Or as one article I saw suggested, take old T-shirts and jeans and when dirty throw them away and buy new ones as you travel.
However you do it, be properly equipped and your trip will be much more fun, as well as safer.

THE JOY OF CURVES
For most motorcyclists, curves are what we live for. For others however, they can be intimidating and scary. By not being a decent curve rider, you really limit where you can ride, and may feel "left out" on our rides to North Georgia. So, if you find yourself having problems with curves, re-evaluate yourself on the following checkpoints:
Pick the right entry point--make sure you enter the curve from the outside, leaving maximum room for leaning the bike.
Make sure your entry speed (and gearing) is appropriate--you do not want to be shifting/braking in the curve! You do it
just before you get there.
Begin your turn using a counter-steering technique to lean the bike.
Make sure to keep your head and eyes level as the bike leans.
<Look as far through the curve as possible -- if you are following another bike, see it through your lower peripheral vision and do not look directly at the bike in front of you. This may not seem natural at first, but later on it will.
Those tennis balls I mentioned last month -- they can be used to set up a practice course. These will be "flat" curves of course (remember your road test?), but by first mastering these, then the up or down spirals will be easier. Like anything else, mastering curves takes practice, so start slow and gradually increase your skill level.
Hopefully these tips will see you doing the curves a bit better each time you go out.
Happy riding!

DALE MOOREFIELD MEMORIAL RIDE
We had an awesome turnout for the Seventh Annual Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride on July 4. The count of motorcycles varied but a count of 250 seemed the norm. A "BIG THANKS" to Allan Farmer for setting up and leading the ride for
another great job "Well Done!" A special thanks to McDonough Police that helped us get out of town, Henry County Deputies, and others that escorted us all the way to Bostwick, and don't forget the wonderful people of Bostwick for making us welcome. It was a great ride and great bar-b-que. I'm sure Dale appreciated the thought and love from everyone. Dale was a special person, loved his motorcycle, riding with his friends and eating. This was one of Dale's favorite rides.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
In the last few years, I have seen more and more women riding their own bikes. Before I started riding my own bike, I used to look at women who rode, get goose bumps and think "I wish that were me" or "that should be me." I was so proud that
there were women brave and adventurous enough to get out there into what was (and mostly still is) a man's world of motorcycling. Now when I look at those women I still get the same goose bumps, but now I'm part of that small group, and I enjoy riding wherever and whenever. Sometimes when I'm out riding women holler to me from their cars with things like "You go girl!" and "Alright, a woman, cool" - they seem to be as impressed as I was. I almost always tell them "you gotta get one of these - it's great!"
My point here is that we women riders have an influence over other women who might have it in their heads "someday that could be me" and we should do everything we can to encourage them to get involved and experience what we know is wonderful and a lifetime of enjoyment. I have personally encouraged four of my friends to take the Riders Edge class and they now ride their own bikes. All four of them have said to me "if it weren't for you, and seeing how much you enjoy it, I don't think I would have gone for it." That makes it all worthwhile. So to all you Ladies of Harley out there - keep encouraging and supporting each other, you never know one day we might out number the men!!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
HARLEY-DAVIDSON 100TH ANNIVERSARY
As we approach the BIG event, many are carefully planning and anticipating their route to Milwaukee, WI. Whichever route you decide to take please be very vigilant of your surroundings.
Know your riders - Whomever you choose to ride with, understand their desires and needs. Being familiar with your riding partner(s) will make stops, starts and turns more comfortable. For example, if you are riding with some Sporties, understand that they will need to stop for fuel more often than a Big Twin. Another example would be if someone in the pack was not feeling well. They might want to stop more often and walk around a bit, get something to drink, use the
restroom, etc.
Plan the ride / ride the plan - Riding around and turning here or there can be a blast up around the GA mountains, but when taking out-of-state trips, having at least one plan of action will be helpful. If you decide to deviate from the plan then, so be it.
Riding safely - Whichever route you decide to take, please remember that a motorcycle requires much more attention than driving a car. As we can change glasses/goggles or take a drink of water while riding down the road we still have to balance the bike 100% of the time. If you have bags and need something out of them (lip balm, ear plugs, gum, cigarette/cigar, etc.), please keep your eyes on the road and make the item you are reaching for the LOWEST priority. Anytime you reach for something while riding you should realize that you are potentially putting yourself in harms way and that the item you are reaching for might have to get dropped and lost. Also, if you are riding with a pack of riders, consider that if you have to drop the item for an emergency evasive action, the riders behind you will now have to run over/avoid your dropped item AND take emergency evasive action. Just food for thought.
Your extremities - Hands ever go numb? How about your right thumb or fingers. Those good ol' HD motorcycles have that wonderful throttle lock. I love that thing; I keep mine turned two thumb twists from tight. If I'm in a "clear" area, I'll give the throttle lock two twists and then release the pressure off my right hand. I'll wiggle my fingers around a bit to get the blood circulating and I'm good to go.
Bike maintenance - Before embarking on your long journey, please make sure your bike is in good condition and ready for a long haul. This includes smart bag packing. Checking your oil and tire pressure / tire tread should become second nature to you.
Ride safely and keep the shiny side up.
Until we ride again.

HISTORIAN/PHOTOGRAPHER'S REPORT
Four Years Ago This Month August 1999
Rene' Durham Secretary/Treasurer's Report -- Patsy Parton won $45.00. Vernon Wright won the attendance jackpot and received a gift certificate for $60 from Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. Hank Somma won a Chapter T-shirt (can you believe I won anything). Money on hand $4,873.89.
Tom Sigerfoos, Activities Officer -- Tommye and I just returned from the bike trip out west. We shipped our bikes to Jackson Hole, WY for a 21-day round trip from Teton National Park in Jackson to Glacier National Park in Montana, then to Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta Canada, then to Victoria in British Columbia, returning along the Washington/Oregon border via the Columbia River Gorge down to Idaho for a trip through the Saw Tooth Mountain Range and back to Jackson.
David Gilmer, Road Captain -- Cheaha State Park, Alabama Ride, August 8. There were 20 Harleys with 31 riders that roared from Thornton Road to the highest point in Alabama. We traveled back roads to the top of Cheaha State Park, and then around the backside of the Talladega National Forest into Lineville. I especially want to thank Steve Johnson and his C.B. equipped "Ultra" for riding sweep.

SECRETARY/DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
Is anybody getting ready to go to Milwaukee? We leave on the 23rd of August for a trip up through Deals Gap, Cumberland Gap, into Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Milwaukee on the 28th. Sharon and I will be carrying the Chapter Flag in the Parade of Flags portion of the big parade on the 31st. We will be proud to represent our chapter, and hope that those who are not in the parade will come out and watch the proceedings.
In the meantime, the March of Dimes Ride to save Babies is getting into full gear. Ronnie Godwin and I went to a meeting of the Leadership Council on Wednesday evening. This is a group of clubs that will be helping put together the ride, and help coordinate some of the activities that will lead up to the ride weekend October 3rd through October 5th. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta has contributed a 2003 Silver and Black Dyna Low Rider with the Gold Key Package. This will be one of the big prizes that people will get a chance to win for collecting $250 or more. There will be contribution envelopes available at the dealership, or if you get one in the mail please call and we will give you our Club Code number to put on the envelope.
As a chapter we have been asked to sponsor one of the multiple Battle of the Bikes that will be staged prior the final Battle on ride weekend. We will need at least 15 volunteers to help run the show. We have tentatively committed to the August 16th show to be held at Barnacles at I-285, and Peachtree Industrial Blvd. The work for the show will mostly take place on the day of the show. It would be good if we went to some of the earlier shows to see how it is being done. There are strict guidelines on how it's run, so we do not have to make up the rules, just coordinate registration, judging, counting the money etc. All of the money collected at the show we sponsor will be credited to our club. The shop will be sponsoring some other events over the next couple of months and we will also need some help with these.
In the past Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and the HOG Chapter were always top contributors to the Ride to Save Babies. Over the past few years we have put our efforts elsewhere, however the shop would like to see if we can get back into the
spirit of this charity and make our mark. We have been challenged by other clubs. I spoke about this at the meeting on July 17th. If you were not at the meeting and would like to help out in any way I would appreciate either a call, 770-564-0873, or you can leave a message at the shop for me, or contact me by e-mail DDevlinHDA@aol.com.

ROAD TRIP(S)
RIDE TO EL RIO IN COPPERHILL, TN
Join us for a Mexican lunch preceded by a nice ride up US 411 taking us "across the border" into Tennessee and then along US64 and the Ocoee River into Copperhill. This is the place where a blue dashed line painted right on the town streets and building sides separates Georgia and Tennessee. You can literally stand with one foot in each state -- without the help of any tequila! We've done this ride before and it was really enjoyable. The total mileage to the destination is about 140 miles, and the roads are excellent with gentle and sweeping curves along the Ocoee River. We will also make a stop prior to lunch at the Whitewater Olympic Center for 30 to 45 minutes so you can observe the rafters and kayakers doing their thing, or just enjoy a walk right next to the river.
WHAT: El Rio Ride
WHEN: August 16, 2003
MEET: 10:00 a.m., Chevron Station @exit 271 on I-75 N (Chastain Road)
DEPARTURE: 10:30 a.m.; lunch at approx. 1:30 p.m.
ROAD CAPTAIN: Tom Sigerfoos 706-374-7647; dynabear@tds.net
FENDER'S DINER IN CORNELIA, GA
Jump back to the 50's with a trip down memory lane in this throw back to the era of rock 'n roll, burgers and shakes and two tone cars with big bumpers and lots of chrome. The chrome and turquoise leatherette furnishings along with artifacts
and advertisements from that era which adorn this eatery will take you back to the time of "Happy Days." We will travel I-20, US278 and US441 to get there and after lunch, for those who desire to, we'll roll north along GA 197 past Lake Burton through northeast Georgia to US 76 which will bring us back centrally before the ride heads south back to Atlanta. This is an all day ride of about 275-300 miles, so don't be in a hurry on this one. Visit their website at www.fendersdiner.com.
WHAT: Fender's Diner Ride
WHEN: September 13, 2003
MEET: 10:00 a.m., Harley Davidson of Atlanta
DEPARTURE: 10:30 a.m.; lunch at approx. 1:00 p.m.
ROAD CAPTAIN: Tom Sigerfoos 706-374-7647; dynabear@tds.net
TEE IT UP OR TAKE TO THE ROAD?
It's time once again to combine motorcycle riding with golf. On October 10th and 11th (Fri. and Sat) we are going to the
Young Harris/Hiawassee, GA area to play golf at the Brasstown Valley Resort, and also ride the beautiful hills and mountains of north-central Georgia, with all their splendid fall foliage on display. Some of the best "twisties" in the state are literally right out the door up here (GA 60, 197, 180, 348 and US 129 and 76). Since the Brasstown Valley Resort was $175.00 per night (peak season), I have reserved rooms in Blairsville, 12 miles to the west, at the Best Western Milton Inn (706-745-6995) which looks very nice. Rooms are $71.00 per night and there are 20 non-smoking rooms set aside under the name Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. Rooms must be reserved no later than September 10.
Tom Sigerfoos, Road Captain
GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE (Sept. 19-21)
Are you read for some mountain riding? If you are still undecided and you receive this newsletter before August 1, 2003, you still have time to make a reservation if there any left. Call the Comfort Inn toll-free 866-885-5047. Do it today! The Atlanta H.O.G. room rate is $85 per night plus tax. Each room has two queen beds, balconies overlooking the river, covered parking and continental breakfast.
On the way up there we will ride the Cherohala Skyway and Deal's Gap, (The Dragon Tail). The Dragon's Tail is worth the ride in itself. There are 318 turns in 11 miles. I promise we will not drag our knees going through the turns. If you are wondering about your expertise, don't worry! You can travel at your own pace. Just make sure you keep on your side of the road and watch for the "crotch rockets" coming up behind you. They will scare you when they blow by you like you were standing still. I'm sure you have experienced "them" if you have ridden any roads in mountains. On the way home Sunday, we will ride a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The trip to Gatlinburg is 260 miles, a full day of riding. In the past we have taken the Foothills Parkway from Tallassee over to Townsend. When I was there in June, I found out that the Foothills Parkway washed out and will not reopen for up to a year. This means that we will take Hwy. 129 on into Maryville and then Hwy. 321 to Townsend. The ride on Sunday is approximately 235 miles.
B.K. Ellis, Road Captain
LUNCH RIDE
For riders 60 years old and older...enjoy an easy, lazy ride to lunch. If your less than 60 and can keep pace, join us and remember, ladies of all ages are always welcomed. If you're older than me, riding a bike, you will receive a free T-shirt. If it's raining, bring your truck. There's a surprise at every ride, don't miss it. The ride will meet at 11:30 a.m. at H-D Atlanta and leave at noon.

BUTLER'S MILL RECAP
Thanks again to everyone that dared mother nature and showed up for this Sunday ride. Twelve bikes made this short but dry 65 mile ride, picking up three additional riders at the B.P. on Hwy.27. I knew everyone was wondering where we were going when we turned onto AL 92 because this was the (boonies). Butlers Mill is a quaint old corn mill on the little Tallapoosa River. A country buffet is served on Sunday with all the usual; fried chicken, catfish, fried green tomato's and beans, with home made ice cream and fresh apple and peach cobblers for dessert. I believe everyone ate their fill. Thanks go to Gary Laingmaid for running sweep.
Gene Williams, Road Captain
FRONT PORCH RECAP
<We had eight members in four cars with 11 of us to show up on eight bikes. Not a bad showing, considering the weather forecast threatened scattered heavy thunderstorms for that afternoon. But the rain-gods must've been with us at least most
of those 45 miles. We only caught light rain for maybe a mile and a half on either side of Whitesburg. Our clothes were even dry by the time we got to the restaurant. The food and the service were excellent, they shoved a bunch of tables together in a line so we could all sit there as a group, and they were very attentive to our needs (they kept the iced tea coming!). It's a buffet style all you can eat, and it tastes like your grandma had cooked it! I could've hurt myself! The only reason I didn't eat more than I did was because I couldn't hold any more...that, and Sharon was sitting next to me. I want to thank all who joined us and hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Next time maybe the weather forecast will be more agreeable so more folks will show up.
Ride today, like you want to be able to ride tomorrow

GOOD OL BOY'S STEAK HOUSE
Want an easy and low stress ride on a Sunday afternoon? Come join Brenda and me on August 17th as we travel down Hwy. 29 south to the Good Ol Boy's Steak House Restaurant in Auburn, AL. Home of the $7.99 steak and bake potato. Beware, orders run on the rare side (order medium, get a rare), and there are no alcohol sales. We will meet at HDA at 9:00 a.m. and leave at 9:30 a.m. Eat a little something before you leave, as lunch will occur around 1:30 p.m. (est) and about 150 miles down the road.

BILOXI TRIP RECAP
What a fantastic trip this was! We had 10 bikes and 12 people for this sometimes soggy ride down to Biloxi, Mississippi. We did get into a torrential downpour about 20 miles outside of Biloxi (and managed to lose 2 riders who later found their way to us), but other than that the ride was enjoyable and leisurely. We all went to the seafood buffet at Boom Town on Friday night and then got a little gambling in (some of us even winning a few bucks). On Saturday we were graciously welcomed by the Mississippi Coast Chapter with a cookout and directions for a great ride. On Saturday night, we ventured into New Orleans where we ate and partied the night away - not getting back to our hotel in Biloxi until the wee hours of the morning. This trip really was a lot of fun and if you missed it, well……maybe next time.
