DIRECTOR'S REPORT
RIDING: RIGHT OR PRIVILEGE?
As we all assembled the weekend of May 31st for Andy Otwell's ride to Helen, GA, which was a wonderful ride, Andy
mentioned in his ride briefing about being careful in Helen not to do anything to draw the attention of the local law enforcement officials, and cited one member's recent run-in with them over what "looked like straight pipes." Seems they are less biker friendly than in days past, and while giving tickets based on appearances without even hearing the bike running raised legal questions in my mind, I was more concerned that apparently Helen, GA is beginning to view "bikers" as potential trouble makers.
Perhaps this attitude is justified and perhaps it is not, but it reminded me of something that we all need to be mindful of -- our "right to ride." Currently, organizations like the AMA advertise that our rights on the road are continuously under fire from various legislative bodies, all of whom want to regulate us in some fashion ranging from helmet laws to emission certification/noise abatement, and in one state there was even a report that a state legislator was about to propose that anyone killed in a motorcycle accident would "automatically" become an organ donor (that's right, donor permission not required). Needless to say that last one never quite made it to the bill stage, much less the capital floor.
Like it or not, in a similar vein to pro athletes, we too are "role models" so to speak when we take to the roads on our bikes. As such, it seems to me it would be wise for all of us to always attempt to provide good P.R. to the "other" motoring public when we are out riding. Simple things, like being courteous or acknowledging when a courtesy has been extended to us, waving back to an admiring youngster, and refraining from certain behaviors that we might entertain doing at an "all biker" assembly like excessive rattling of our pipes and doing "burn outs." Maybe a good rule of thumb is just to shoot for good
ol' peaceful coexistence with the rest of those using the roadways. We do not have the right to be obnoxious when we're on our bikes anymore than someone else has the right to be obnoxious in their cars.
I can assure you of one thing though, when most folks see us rolling along on one of these wonderful (and expensive) Harleys, they most likely regard us as privileged. We might be wise to consider their point of view -- while I believe that we absolutely have the right to ride, I also believe that this comes with a responsibility to preserve that right, not only for us but for those to follow. Maybe one way to work toward this is to treat it as a privilege. At this point, my experience riding in Georgia as well most other places tells me I can go anywhere virtually unthreatened from any sort of a hassle just because I
am on a motorcycle -- let's all work to keep it that way.
TECHNICAL SKILLS REFRESHER
Ever considered what to do with old worn out tennis balls? Probably not, but have you ever wondered how you can duplicate some of the cone drills you did in MSF or Rider's Edge? Answer: tennis balls! Cut in half, these make great cones and also offer the advantage that if you run over one, unlike a real cone, they won't get tangled up under your bike with perhaps unplanned consequences. You can also get a bunch of 'em in a saddle bag. The only way to keep up your skills is practice, practice, practice! Good skills are like a good knife -- keep them sharp always. You never know when you will need them!

RIDE YOUR BIKE TO WORK DAY
The time has once again rolled around for the Annual Ride Your Bike To Work Day on Wednesday, July 16. This day was
set aside to display how many motorcycle owners/operators we have in this great nation of ours.
If you haven't driven your bike to work be sure and pay extra careful attention in commuter traffic. When driving in traffic
be vigilant of how many cars and trucks are around you and where they are. Also, be sure to use your turn signals and give
yourself plenty of space for turns and lane changes.
Cross roads and intersections can become a very nasty place very quickly. This makes them especially dangerous for
motorcycles. When preparing for a turn be sure you have adequate space for the turn, there are no obstructions in the roadway, and get a mirror and head check before proceeding. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention!
Ride safely and keep the shiny side up.
Until we ride again.

Four Years Ago This Month July 1999
Jim Durham, Director wrote: July 1999 Doug Rasmuson, of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta's, is the Employee of the Month. Everyone had a fun time in Greenville at "Greenville Rally H.O.G. Rally." This was a great rally and thanks for all of you that spread the word around about our group picture. For what little time we had all of the bleachers full, I'm sure the picture will turn out great (it did!)
Allan Farmer, Assistant Director wrote: If you missed the Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride, you certainly missed a great ride. We met on the square in McDonough. The sky looked threatening when the 153 bikes left the square, but the dark sky soon gave way to sunshine. Thanks to the McDonough Police and the County Sheriff for handling traffic in McDonough, and the Newton County Sheriff for providing us with an escort. We had an incident free ride. We traveled all
back roads through Henry, Newton, and Morgan counties, passing through the small towns Mansfield, Newborn, and Rutledge. We arrived in Bostwick about an hour before they started serving the best bar-b-q. We were glad to have the Stone Mountain Chapter join us with 33 bikes, led by their Director and Dealer.

WOMEN WHO RIDE HARLEYS AND THEIR WORK PLACE
I'm doing a photographic project on women who ride Harleys. It will be a photo essay done in black and white film, and is for all women who ride Harleys. The project is a juxtaposition of women in their work place and on their bike, and the
passion they have for riding. It will show how women are making the decision to ride themselves, that stereotyping women because they ride Harleys or any bike is a misnomer. That's the juxtaposition I want to express in my photography. If you are interested, please email me at hank@hanksomma.com and a questionnaire will be sent to you. When your questionnaire is received, we can schedule a photo shoot. Also, an invitation to an unlisted web site will be sent to you. This website is only for women riders and this project, and is intended to keep you updated on our progress. You can also check out my personal photographic web site at www.hanksomma.com. It's not complete, but will give you a peek at my
work.

MEET ROAD CAPTAIN STEVE JOHNSON
I'm Steve Johnson -- I'm back and proud to be here! Thank you B.K., Hank and Gary. With the help of my lovely wife, Sharon, I hope to be an asset to our Chapter as a Road Captain. Since joining the Chapter in 1995, I have served as a Road
Captain and then as Ride Director for two years and I've been to Primary Officers Training (P.O.T.), thanks to the generosity of Eddie and Chris. I'm also a Life Member of H.O.G. I proudly served my country from 1965-1968 in the U.S.M.C. as crew-chief on an L.V.T.-P5, and crew-member on the L.V.T.-P.X.12 (the then experimental version of today's modern Armored Personnel Carrier). I did my tour of duty in Viet-Nam in 1966-1967. On March 1, 2001, I retired from Delta Airlines with 32 years three months of continuous service. I started riding motorcycles as a baby, sitting on the gas tank of my Dad's '47 Indian Chief. I bought my first bike in 1968, a '67 Triumph Bonneville, and rode it until the birth of my first son in 1970. My next bike was a '79 Harley Electra-Glide Classic, it was my "Electra-Glide in Blue," and I rode it on my first trip to Bike-Week in 1981. In 1980 my second son was born, but I was able to keep the bike this time, but when my third son came in 1982, the bike had to go. I didn't have another bike until 1995, a new beautiful black Heritage Softail-Classic -- OH, YEAH -- which I bought from Chris when they were still in East Point. Then in 1996, I met Sharon. We were married in '97 and I finally got my daughter! In '98 Sharon and I bought a '96 Ultra, and in 2000 I bought a new Ultra, and Sharon got a Sportster. My garage was maxed-out! We sold the Heritage and the '96 Ultra. My youngest son rides the Sportster, and Sharon rides with me on the Ultra! HA! I really enjoyed putting rides together, first dreamin' one up, then researching it, mapping it out, pre-riding and finally leading the ride. I look forward with great inner enthusiasm to meeting
the many new members we have, and having as many of you as possible joining Sharon and me, on as many rides as you can. It's great to be back!

MEET GENE WILLIAMS, ROAD CAPTAIN
Hello everyone, my name is Gene Williams. My wife, Shelia, and I now own a 2001 Ultra-Classic we purchased in May 2000. I am pleased to be a new Road Captain and am very proud of our chapter.
I'm now 48 years old and have been riding for about 38 years. I cut my teeth on an old Wizzard and Allstate 250. When I reached the magical age of 16, I bought my first new street bike - a 1972 Kaw, triple two stroker -- those things were wild.
My wife would never ride until we bought our Ultra; Shelia was always very fearful of bikes. She now sleeps on the back of our bike at times. I guess her fear is gone - huh? The telltale sign for knowing your passenger
is asleep is your helmets crashing together when shifting. Well, enough about us. I'm concentrating on Sunday lunch and dinner rides so all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks for your support and see ya soon.
Gene Williams, Road Captain
ROAD TRIP(S)
SOUTHERN HIGHROADS TRAIL RIDE
I hope everyone who wanted to go on this ride was able to make their accommodations OK. I did get some reports of the motels "not knowing the score"' when it came to rates and under what names the rooms were under, but I think most of
those problems got worked out.
For those who are going, get ready for a great ride and some wonderful scenery. Be sure to bring both cold weather and rain gear for the ride, as the weather in the mountains can be chilly even in the summer and thunderstorms can pop up anytime. Hopefully we won't need the rain gear though.
For those who might want to go but did not make reservations in time, contact me and I will put you in touch with close by hotels.
WHAT: Southern Highroads Trail Ride
WHEN: July 25, 26, and 27

FRONT PORCH DINNER RIDE
For anyone who loves real good ol' country cookin' with everything from BBQ & stew, to fried fish or shrimp w/fries, or chicken including gizzards & livers, with delicious vegetables and bread and cornbread and -- oh yes, desserts! -- we'll be riding from the dealership to the Front Porch restaurant in Carrollton on July 5. We'll meet at 3:00 p.m. and leave at 3:30 p.m. for about an hour's ride (45 miles).
Steve Johnson, Road Captain
LUNCH RIDES
I'll be leading on Wednesday Lunch Rides from the dealership on July 9, 16 & 23. We'll meet at 10:30 a.m. and leave at 11:00 a.m. We'll decide when we meet where we want to go. All ages are welcome...you too, Hank!

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
HELEN, GA RECAP RIDE
I'd like to thank everyone who came out on that beautiful Saturday morning and rode through the mountains up to Helen. We had 63 eager riders show up dressed in smiles and riding apparel, with 41 bikes and a truck/trailer leaving HDA. We
headed west to Hiram then northwest to Cartersville where we picked up three more bikes (made the count 44 bikes). I think we had a few more pick up our route while riding through Dawsonville, which pushed our pack to more than 45 bikes!
Our ride was carried out in four legs with the mileage set at around 40 mi, 50+ mi, 50+ mi, 15 miles. The route took us through Hiram, Cartersville, Canton, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, Suches and finally Helen. At our third stop we lined up and smiled for pictures with a scenic mountain backdrop. I took a group picture of the entire pack of 60 something riders (prints available for $49.95 - just kidding).
We arrived in Helen in good fashion and received a warm welcome at Hans Restaurant. Debra and the crew have always greeted me with a smiling face and reserved seats - this time was no different. After lunch everyone scattered around town
checking into the hotel, going shopping, walking around aimlessly, etc. A few of us hopped back on our bikes and went for another spin around North Georgia -- we just couldn't pass up the great weather and those long winding roads.
Later in the evening we all rendezvoused at Paul's steak house and enjoyed a delicious meal while enjoying the company of our friends. The band playing in the lounge (next door) was one of the best bands I have heard. We closed the place down at 1:00 a.m. and headed back to the hotel for some shut-eye.
I can sum up the 2003 overnight Helen Run with good people, good weather, good ridin', good food and great times. Again I would like to thank everyone for coming out and bringing your friends and family. I would also like to thank the officers, road captains, and staff that helped make this ride a success (Tom, Terri F., Gary, Scott, Gene, Chris H., Chris C.).
Until we ride again…
Andy Otwell, Road Captain
