DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A Reprieve from Winter
In early February, Tommye and I took a 10-day trip to Phoenix and San Antonio. We wanted to get away from the winter weather here so we could ride and also to visit family and friends. During our stay in Phoenix, for which we had gorgeous weather, we rented a couple of HD's from Chosa's in Mesa and hit the road (yep, scratchin' that itch, western style). Winter
is a nice time in Phoenix but the only problem is once you get 30 miles out in any direction except the desert to the SW, you begin to climb in elevation and it gets pretty chilly. So our rides kept us mostly within 50 miles but the scenery was awesome--we did a loop from Mesa to Payson then back to Tonto Basin and down to Roosevelt Dam, over to Globe and back to Mesa. We saw tons of saguaro cactus, along with many mesas and peaks of red rock and it was absolutely
beautiful. On our second day, we ran out to a place called Tortilla Flat, which was a stage coach stop in the days of the old west -and it has not changed much. The three buildings which are there are really old and the only restaurant is totally wallpapered in real one dollar bills--about 35,000 of them; food was good and they have live music every day. This road
continues over to Roosevelt Dam (the short way) but about a mile down from the restaurant the pavement ends and it becomes a dirt road for the next 22 miles. We opted to obey the rental agreement and not go "off road." The paved portion however offers a good 10 miles of "twisties" in country side they could film any number of Westerns in---big rocks, sagebrush, small canyon, etc. And of course we visited most of the Harley dealers in the area as well.
We also spent a night in Sedona (has a place to rent Harleys, too) which is breathtaking with its red rock formations and the town itself is set in an area where at every turn, a spectacular view is offered. Since it was too cool for bikes we did this in our rented convertible with top down, windows up and heater running. Just north of Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon (which is a must see), and from there, its only 12 miles to Flagstaff, so we visited Grand Canyon HD and then took a piece of Route 66 back into town and ate at the Galaxy Diner---a real piece of Americana, just as it was so long ago. Here, they still make milk shakes the old way with the syrup fountains and the Hamilton Beach blenders whirring away---none of this pre frozen stuff out of a pump. Our ride back to Phoenix that evening treated us to a beautiful sunset and as the sky shone its last bits
of orange and yellow, those colors formed the backdrop for the silhouettes of the saguaro cactus of which there were thousands to see.
In the two days we had the Harleys, we covered about 350 miles and I think this might get me through until we can steadily ride here, assuming we don't get a late blast from the north. It was great to be in the saddle in such a beautiful place; I think one could spend a month on the roads in Arizona and still not see it all--but I am going to try, in summer 2004!!
Record Breaker
The Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. set a new attendance record for our chapter at the February meeting with 182 people in attendance. For a moment I thought perhaps someone had rescheduled the raffle -- WOW, what a crowd!! It's very encouraging to see so many folks attending or checking out our chapter. I hope we see this kind of crowd a lot this year!!!
Larry Laughlin Update
Many of you might remember Larry Laughlin, (a.k.a. "Lucky Larry") a favorite member here, who retired to the Phoenix area back in 1999. Tommye and I returned from a visit to there February 12th which, in part, was triggered by going to see Larry who had just returned home following surgery for esophageal cancer and 42 days in ICU. Larry is doing very well and is expected to fully recover. We were able to visit with him twice during our 5 day stay--his spirit is good (as is his grip!), and he looks good, just a little weak (expectedly). Larry had what is known as Barret's Esophagus, and he offers this warning: if you have had persistent heartburn for a year or so, where you live on Tums, Pepcid, Nexium, etc., go see your doctor, NOW!! Hopefully by end of summer, Larry will be back on his bike. Larry says he is feeling very lucky!!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Daytona a Wash!
There are only three words that describe Daytona Bike Week this year; rain, rain, rain. We had a good time watching the ocean and eating. We had a great turn out for the Julian's dinner and not too many were complaining about the rain. Some of us took a late ride around loop road, one of the few evening without rain. I think it rain eight out of the ten days that we were there. The lunch at The Deck was a different story. Before we finished lunch a really bad storm blew in and I mean
blew. It turned one motorcycle over in the parking lot. We enjoyed the lunch and just stayed till it blew over. I applaud the ones that took time to venture that far from their warm and dry motel room. Since these were two Sanction Events, a lot of members got their two events in in two days.

TREASURER'S REPORT
Raffle Tickets
There are 135 Raffle Tickets left to sell. Rene' has 48 tickets at her desk. The rest, members have taken to sell. If you have tickets to sell, all tickets and/or money must be turned into Rene' by April 17, at the chapter meeting. Then we will have
two weekends to sell the remaining tickets (if any) before the drawing. Plans for the Raffle Drawing have been made for Saturday, May 3, 2003. It will be even bigger and better than the last one. Better get a ticket now and be a part of the "Big Party" and you might even go home with a Harley-Davidson 2003 100th Anniversary Heritage Softail Classic.

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
The Wave
Ever notice how the motorcycle wave is something special? Here is what some others have written ...reprinted from Adventure Motorcycling
Catch a Wave
Sometimes when I ride for an extended period of time my mind ends up thinking about things that just don't seem to come to me at other times. The other day I got to wondering about the motorcycle wave, you know, the wave that motorcyclists give each other when they meet going opposite ways. I remember quite some years ago when I just started riding while living in a west coast smog choked community (???) that I wasn't aware of the wave until I happened to ride out to where the highways have less than six lanes. Seems people in the city just don't have time to perform the wave - probably got too much on their mind splitting traffic and all. I remember the first time I encountered a wave, "do I know that guy?" Soon it became evident that this was protocol I was not aware of and that I should probably wave back. I thought this is really neat,
just because we are riding a motorcycle we somehow belong to some sort of fraternity, how cool! Then on the same trip while enjoying my new found brotherhood and waving at every bike I came across I noticed something odd, not everyone waved back. Then it occurred to me, most of the non-wavers were riding the American model motorcycle (I think you can figure it out). I was on a Honda at the time and I guess I didn't belong to that club. So I started to wonder, why do
motorcyclists wave in the first place? I came to the conclusion because of a common love of the activity, nothing more nothing less. Then why I wondered, is there a division between us and them, I had subsequently noticed that the non-wavers did in fact wave, just not to non-American model riders. The only thing that made sense to me was snobbery, that was the only thing that made sense even though it was senseless and I just continued on my way making sure not to wave to riders I
knew would not wave back.
Some years later I found myself moving to a somewhat rural mountain community and to my surprise I found that ALL motorcyclists waved to me not just the ones from my division. Uh Oh, now I have to start retraining myself to wave to the "other" guys, seemed kind of weird after so many years of not. Then I noticed, when the folks from "the city" would come to the mountains, guess what - they didn't wave. Now I'm all confused, how do I handle this? I don't want to look like a
moron waving to the wrong crowd but now it's even worse, the "other guys" are just not on the American model but an import that looks like the American model. I started to wonder if the American model guy and the look-alikes wave to each other? It was about then that I realized I really didn't care, "screw 'em, I'm going to wave to everyone and if they don't wave back I just don't care." That has been my philosophy ever since and at least I feel better about it. But I still wonder...

HOG Around the Shop
Spring is here and the riding begins. By the time this is published Bike Week will be over, the flowers will be blooming, and all the bikes will be yellow. I will have just returned from Primary Officer Training in Panama City Florida.
One of the things about the Harley Owners Group is that they like to have everyone on the same page. In order to accomplish this they offer a two day training session for the Primary Officers. I am looking forward to going as I write this, and will be anxious to talk about it at the next meeting. Other officers will be going to another session in Nashville later in the month.
Was our last meeting awesome or not? A record 182 persons in attendance, 20 or so new members, and a guest from England. More and more people are coming up to me in the shop on Saturdays and talking about what is happening with the chapter and wanting to know what they can do to make it a better chapter. Just by asking you are already doing that. Come out and join the rides, drop by and talk to other members, and keep coming to the meetings.

Not Quite Superman Fast!
I am planning a ride to the AMRA Pennington Spring Nationals (Harley Drags) at the Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds Georgia on April 12 (Saturday). It is rumored that HDA will be officially represented on the track. As the event starts at 3:00 pm, we hope to pull out from HDA at high noon and take a 100-+ mile scenic ride down west of I-75 and arrive around 2:30 pm. We DO NOT plan to stop and eat on the way down (but please join us for breakfast at the Thornton Road IHOP @10:00 am). For this trip beverages and earmuffs may be in order. You can visit the raceway website at: http://silverdollarraceway.com for further details. Please note that the parking area is grass, so it would be a good idea to bring a kick stand coaster or similar item (view parking at: http://silverdollarraceway.com/pics.htm). See you on Race Day!
(Ok, a speeding bullet travels at the Superman's standard btw 2700 and 4000 fps. A typical race bike runs the 1/4 mile (1320 ft) in about eight sec, or 165 fps.)

Start thinking now about going on this 3 day, 2 night overnighter through North Carolina and North Georgia. Hotel details to follow next month and it is likely all reservations will have to be made by the end of June. The weekend for the ride is July 25-27. This year we will go in reverse of the past two years. It's a fun ride and a way to beat the heat of summer!!

GATLINBURG, September 19-21, 2003
I know it is very early to be thinking about what you are going to do in September. If you have ever been to Gatlinburg in the fall, you know motels/hotels book up fast, especially for groups. I have blocked 20 rooms at the Comfort Inn, 2931 Parkway. All the rooms have balconies over looking the river and covered parking. Each room has two queen beds. They gave me a group rate of $85 per night plus tax. Call toll free 866-885-5047 to make your reservation. Tell them you are with the Harley-Davidson group from Atlanta. Reservation must be booked by August 1. If you are thinking about going, go ahead and make your reservation so if we need more rooms we can possibly get them. Last year we ran out of rooms and some had to stay at other motels/hotels around town and did not get the group rate. Please book as soon as possible.

Impromptu Lunch Ride Recap
I guess the little rain we had in the morning kept a lot of members home. As it turned out, by the time we left the dealership, the sun was braking through the clouds and it turned out to be a great day for riding. After lunch the ride home turned out to be too warm for the leathers. We had a great ride and some great food at Louise's in Griffin.

Sprayberry's BBQ Recap
Well I wish we had better weather for the Sprayberry's lunch ride. It was a little misty and cool, however, eight folks did make it out for the ride. We had Gene Williams leading the pack and Scott Vandiver running sweep, both working toward completing their Road Captain's training
We took the scenic route down Highway 70 to the restaurant. Many of the patrons and their kids were very empress with our ride even the local sheriff's deputies were admiring our bikes out in the parking lot. We were fortunate to be able to park under the covered parking area. The food and the fellowship were great.

Top Chinese Buffet Ride Recap
What a beautiful day for riding. We had 12 bikes show up for this ride. We headed out to our ole favorite stopping place…where else but to the Amoco in CEDARTOWN. Thanks to Gene for sweeping for us. The CB radios came in handy also. He had to pull over with one of the rider because that rider thought he was going to run out of gas. His sportster could barely make it 60 miles before going to reserve but he was able to make it to the Amoco station. The weather warmed up pretty well after we left Cedartown and headed for the restaurant in Hiram. Everyone was impressed
with the variety of food and the price (about six bucks for all you can eat).
