DIRECTOR'S REPORT
WE'RE ON A MISSION
Did you happen to notice the Mission Statement on the mailing address side of your last HOGWASH? This is the official
statement of what our chapter is all about and what guides the officers in planning rides and activities.
At the officer meeting held on January 18th, I felt that it was important for us to develop this Mission Statement. I am sure
many of you are wondering why. Well, many business organizations do it for the simple reason of defining the organization, what it is about, its' purpose and how it will achieve its' objectives. Although we are a social organization, it is important if we are to provide our members with a good program and one that will see a high degree of participation. We need to know how and where to focus.
So what are we about? The Mission Statement says, for one, we provide exciting, safe and organized riding opportunities and social events. We recruit Road Captains to lead all sorts of rides -- to lunch, dinner, overnighters, impromptu and full day rides. We try to have fun at our meetings while providing information and for excitement, what about those bike raffles, or the dream of a chapter clubhouse? We try to socialize during the off-season, as well, just to keep in touch. What is this about expanded horizons? Well, did you ever participate in an event that "stretched" you a bit, such as living on your bike for a few days in whatever weather came along, for example our Charleston ride, or perhaps ride a longer distance such as to Milwaukee and back? We have talked about dreams before --- all those things you anticipated your ownership experience would be and the things you are doing now that you actually have your Harley. We hope to provide opportunities for you to
fulfill those dreams. In doing these things, undoubtedly, you will meet tons of people and make new friends all along the way. These are the things that create memories you will remember the rest of your life and relive as you page through your photo albums or scrapbooks. What about personal relationships forged in iron and steel? This simply refers to the fact that riding Harleys is a great "equalizer," where we just have fun together on our bikes, living in the moment, forgetting what we do to earn a living or who we are when we're not riding.
As your planners and organizers, I hope we are focusing on the right things. Keep us posted in how we are doing for you.
"MILEAGE MADNESS" BEGINS
Once again, we have come up with another way to get you guys out on the road enjoying those great Harley-Davidson motorcycles. We call it "Mileage Madness" and here is how it works:
Beginning Saturday, March 1, 2003 all participants must register their bikes' starting mileage with the service department (and/or H.O.G. volunteer on Saturdays). Ending mileage will be registered in the same manner by Saturday, November 15,
2003. All miles count - there are no restrictions concerning chapter events although we hope many of those miles will be on chapter rides! Registration will remain open until November 14, 2003. At the time of registration an entry fee of $20.00 per bike will be collected by the chapter.
We will divide the competition into four categories: Sportster/Buell/VROD, Dyna, Softail, and Touring models. There will be gift certificate awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category. First place is $100.00, 2nd place is $75.00 and 3rd place is $50.00. There will also be an additional award to the top overall mileage winner in the form of a gift certificate for $100.00.
Each participant will receive a commemorative patch when the contest closes.
We hope to see all of you participating in Mileage Madness!
MEMBER MEETINGS
At our recent officer meeting on January 18th, we decided on the following time frames for the member meetings:
Social Time: 6:30-7:15 pm
Dinner Time: 7:15 pm
Meeting Start: 7:30 pm
Meeting End: 8:30 pm
What is new? Many felt the social portion was important in that many of you decide at the meeting, upon seeing others you know, what rides to go on. There will be two large ride calendars posted so you can refer to these when gathering/talking.
We also pledged to complete the meeting in one hour or less if possible -- we want you here but do not want the meeting to be an ordeal for you. One way we will save time is to provide less detail when covering the ride calendar, so please refer to your newsletter for all the details you need concerning chapter rides. We have also received very positive feedback on having our meal at the beginning of the meeting, and we will continue doing so.
COVERED BRIDGE REMINDER
Do not forget about our Covered Bridges of Georgia Tour, which will help generate clubhouse funds and provide you with a unique riding experience. Books are always available at the motorclothes counter and at the designated table during the
meeting. Cost is $20.00 and net proceeds go toward a very good cause---our future meeting place!

H.O.G. Benefit News
Per the January/February 2003 issue of HogTales, the H.O.G. Roadside Assistance Program has changed. Effective January 1, 2003, all full and full life members will be automatically enrolled in the Standard Package of the Roadside Assistance
Program, which provides coverage of up to $100 for certain expenses for your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The Standard Package allows for the following coverage: Towing service, Fuel replacement service, Flat tire assistance, Battery/jump start service, Lost Key service, Extrication assistance, Toll-free telephone support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and one
roadside assistance service per year per member (maximum $100).
There is no additional charge for the Standard Package, and full and full life members may use it once per year. All costs in excess of $100 are the member's responsibility. If the service is $100 or less you pay nothing, if it is more than $100, you pay the difference. You can still get the Deluxe Package for only $19.95 per year. Full and full life H.O.G. members who are interested in upgrading to the increased benefit level, the Deluxe Package covers unlimited roadside assistance support for just $19.95 per year. It provides the same protection and service as the Standard Package, plus unlimited roadside assistance and Sign and Ride - all towing/roadside assistance costs are covered in full.
When I broke down this past fall, I used my Roadside Assistance coverage (Deluxe Package, the new name) and it worked great. If you are into serious motorcycling around the country or just here in Georgia I would recommend you consider the
additional coverage. You never know when you might have a problem and you will have a "friend" to call. I know I will continue my Deluxe Package.
DO YOU YAHOOOOOOOOOOO?
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. has a "Private Group" on Yahoo at the following URL:
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantachapterhog/
You must be an Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. member to have access to the Group. When you register, make sure list your "Real Name" in your Profile to ensure your identity as an Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. member. Only Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Group Members will have access to your name and e-mail address. That way other Atlanta Chapter members will recognize
your name and be able to email you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. If you have problems, e-mail me and I will try to assist you. Upon approval for the Group, you will be able to post messages, upload pictures and chat. This is the easiest way to have instant access to what is going on in the chapter. You want to meet at your favorite restaurant for dinner or get a group together for a ride… Just post your information and see who takes you up on your invitation. This is the best way to keep informed and up to date on all the special activities that do not make the HOGWASH printing. We have 370 members with e-mail addresses and 50 members on the Yahoo Group. HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN'S REPORT
GET ME OFF THE ROAD!
Although it may not seem like it, parking is a very important part of any ride.
The location and area of parking is the responsibility of the Road Captain/Ride Leader. When parking, the Road Captain/Ride Leader should consider location, surface conditions and availability. The Road Captain/Ride Leader should
always park in a location, which will place him or her in a position to start out first when the break/ride is over. When the motorcycles are parked in a row, the Road Captain/Ride Leader and his or her assistant need to position their motorcycles to be at the front and rear of the parked cycles. When it is time to leave, the Road Captain/Ride Leader will start their engines and then pull forward at the same time to indicate the ride is ready to start again. This gives all the riders time to mount and prepare to ride. When parking in large parking lots, the Road Captain/Ride Leader will precede to a point that ensures all riders can clear the travel portion of the roadway. Never forget the most important part of any ride is a safe completion. Ride safe and have fun, and remember... "Let's Be Careful Out There"
ROAD CAPTAIN TRAINING CLASS
I would like to thank all who participated in my first annual Road Captain's Training Class held January 25, 2003. We had
attendance of 22 people. We have about 9 prospective ride leaders who will be working toward completing their Ride Captain requirements. The requirements are as follows:
Attending the Road Captain's Training Class
Assist in sweeping a ride.
Assist in leading a ride.
Lead a ride.
I would like to congratulate Gene William for sweeping and Ed Chowning for assisting in leading Doug Turner's lunch ride
to LaFiesta. They are now one-step closer in obtaining their Road Captain's patch. Both of you did a great job!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
Thanks to all of you who came to Golden Corral for the Ladies of Harley meeting on February 11. We came up with a bunch of good ideas for events and rides so be sure to watch the HOGWASH for upcoming events.
One thing that was decided is that the ladies want to get together on the first Tuesday of every month for dinner and to socialize with other women. Our first dinner will be on March 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse on Highway 5 in Douglasville. Our next dinner will be on April 1 at the Melting Pot in Kennesaw (near Town Center Mall), again at 7:00 p.m. I will organize rides to these dinners, so you can either meet at the restaurant or meet at the dealership and ride to dinner. If you want to participate in a ride to the dinners, please meet at the dealership at 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting) on the night of the dinner.
SHARE HOUSE
Once again, this year, we will be collecting baskets and candy to make Easter baskets for the Share House children. For a variety of reasons we are not doing an Easter egg hunt/party for them, but will instead deliver the basket for Share House to pass out to the children. A donation box will be set up outside René's office for you to make your donations.
Also, anytime you have clothing, household items, etc. that you plan to donate to a charitable organization, please remember Share House. They are in constant need of donations. I will set up a Share House Box at the dealership for you to drop
your items in. If, however, what you plan to donate is too big for the box, please let me know and I will make other arrangements to get the item(s) from you and to Share House.
Thank you in advance for your generosity to the mothers and children of Share House.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
This month I would like to highlight some common safety procedures that should keep in mind during practice riding, single
riding, and group riding.
1. Your safety is your responsibility. Ride safely at all times.
2. Review your road signs and hand signals. See me for reference materials
3. Practice basic and evasive maneuvers in a controlled environment on a regular basis. These include sudden braking, slow turns, turning and stopping, and swerving (clean and dry vacant parking lots can be good for this).
4. Never assume the other driver sees you (drive/ride defensively)
5. Look for eye contact and constantly be aware of the potential unmindful driver.
6. Look and plan ahead. Observe roadways for debris and automobiles/bikes ahead of you for swerving or bouncing taillights.
7. NEVER assume the 'coast is clear' even when following a ride leader or when riding in a group. ámirror check, head check,
turn signal, hand signal, proceedñ
8. Avoid aggressive riding and avoid aggressive drivers. Do not compete with aggressive drivers on the road. Carefully and gradually slow your pace and allow the aggressive driver to pass.
9. When group riding, observe staggered formation with the two second rule - single formation when required. Do not run stop signs or stop lights in order to keep the pack together. Do not block traffic in attempt to keep the pack together.
10. When group riding, new or inexperienced riders should ride up front with the ride leader and not feel as though they are being negatively singled out. Enjoy the front seat while you can. Try keeping a steady pace and if the ride leader is pulling away too fast, maintain a comfortable speed and the ride leader will slow back down to your pace.
Remember be safe and have fun. Hopefully, the care we take with our riding/driving will breed more care in other's driving.
Until we ride again,
Andy Otwell

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
As always, I want to welcome the new members to The Atlanta Chapter. We are so glad to have you and we are looking
forward to meeting you and getting to know you better.
The dealership truly appreciates all the positive statements that I received via e-mail during the course of the month. I
received several fantastic e-mails from members of our Chapter who had wonderful and encouraging things to say about the
sales team and the service department staff at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. "Wendy, a pleasant young lady who really
knows her product line and her sales manners left nothing to be desired." "No sales pressure or hype!" "I really felt at
home." Thank you so much for taking the time to express your thoughts and/or concerns with us.
With that said, I also received e-mails from unhappy members who are not in agreement with the dealerships decision to
modify inactive members' dealership discounts. "The discount should be an incentive to come to your dealership and buy
your product, not to attend meetings." "There is a lot more money and friendships to be gained the way it was!" "This is a
gigantic step in a backward direction." On behalf of the dealership, I must say, every e-mail was reviewed by management
and taken into consideration. However, as in any situation, although we may try, we cannot please everyone.
I encourage and welcome all feedback, comments, ideas, and concerns.
HOG RAFFLE
If you are planning to sit at home on May 3rd, come on down to the dealership and buy a raffle ticket, because this is where
the party will be!
There was so much time and effort that went into making, last years raffle, a successful one. It is our hope, to carry on that
tradition this year, with a little extra help. We are currently in the works of planning this splendid event. This year, Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. and The Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter have hired an event planner to take care of the staff, rental
arrangements, tents, greenery, lighting, linens, and catering. This is such a relief for those of us who planned the event last
year. This will also allow for the members who volunteered their time helping last year, to enjoy the party and associate
with their fellow members this year.
We are going to have a fabulous time! We hope to see you there.
MEETING NEW FOLKS
This past Monday I attended the social at Taco Mac on Dallas Highway with my good friend and co-worker, Wendy Cassarella. To my surprise, we both saw unfamiliar faces. I must admit, I was quite eager to meet everyone and to
introduce myself. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a very interesting man, John Morgan. As we were sitting there discussing John's past motorcycle experiences, Wendy suggested that I interview him. Wendy and I were so intrigued we decided it would be a great way to introduce new and/or old members and possible promote the idea to be more sociable at meetings and activities.
John Morgan is a native of Wisconsin. He has held residency in Georgia for the past ten years. As a child, John received his first Harley-Davidson ride at the young age of eight. He went on to say he learned to ride a motorcycle on a 1947 UL,
which has reverse gears. John has owned fifty-one Harley-Davidson's in his lifetime. I believe that to be incredible and impressive, if I might add. John has been a semi active member of our chapter for the past three years. He is also a very loyal customer to Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. In talking with John, I was so amazed at how much I was learning. I was like a sponge waiting to absorb information. I learned that John and his father started buying and restoring Harley-Davidson's in the early 1990's. He also owned a Harley-Davidson snowmobile, which were available for only one year. The most shocking information John shared was that in his first year as a member he never missed a meeting and in that year, only one member introduced himself and said hello to John at every meeting. The further the conversation went, the more I realized how important it truly is to get to know the individuals in our chapter.
Something to think about…As many activities that are planned in the course of a year, think of all the members and possible members we could have attending, if we only made them feel a little more comfortable in knowing someone or just having someone to talk with.
Just an idea…at the next meeting, sit next to someone who you would not ordinarily choose. Say hello to people who you know and to those you do not know. Introduce yourself and introduce them to the people around you. It is a small and
simple task, that only takes a second to complete, and could possibly lead to a life long friendship.

ROAD TRIP(S)
CHATTANOOGA TRIP
Our trip to Chattanooga is scheduled for March 29 and 30 (a one-nighter). A block of rooms have been reserved at the
Chattanooga Choo-Choo in Downtown Chattanooga. Please call them directly at 800-872-2529 to make your room reservation - be sure to ask for the block of rooms held for Atlanta Harley. They have given us a reduced rate for the night of $79 plus tax, but reservations must be made by March 8th in order to get the discount. As of the writing of this
article, there were only 10 rooms left in our block.
There has been a time change for the departure of this ride - we will now meet at the dealership at 9:30 a.m. and leave at 10:00 a.m.
For dinner on Saturday, I thought a dinner theater would be a nice change of pace. I found a place across the river that does mystery dinner theater. On March 29th, they will be showing "Mystery at the Redneck-Italian Wedding." The dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. and consists of all-you-can-eat Italian buffet, dessert and non-alcoholic drinks (you can even BYOB), and the price is only $24.50 per person. If are interested in joining us for this dinner/mystery theater, please call (423) 697-0377 to
make your reservation (you must have a reservation to attend). We will meet in the Lobby of our hotel at 5:20 p.m. to depart for dinner.

BILOXI TRIP
I know this is a couple of months out, but since I am sure there will be a HUGE response to this one, I wanted to get you the information as soon as possible. The weekend trip (two-nighter) to Biloxi will be June 27-29, 2003 (Friday-Sunday). A block of 30 rooms are reserved at the Holiday Inn Express Biloxi (beachside), which is located in the heart of Casino Mile and next to the Mall. Our discounted rate is $99 each night, plus tax, and includes free breakfast bar and evening cocktail reception. To get this rate your reservation must be made by May 27, 2003. Please call 1-800-468-2102 and ask for the block of rooms under code "HAR" or Atlanta Harley.
I am working with Mississippi Coast Harley on some rides and/or a possible half-day trip to New Orleans so that we have things to do besides win all the casinos' money. More details will be forthcoming.

GATLINBURG, September 19-21, 2003
I know it is very early to be thinking about what you are going to do in September. If you have ever been to Gatlinburg in the fall, you know motels/hotels book up fast, especially for groups. I have blocked 20 rooms at the Comfort Inn, 2931 Parkway. All the rooms have balconies over looking the river and covered parking. Each room has two queen beds. They gave me a group rate of $85 per night plus tax. Call toll free 866-885-5047 to make your reservation. Tell them you are with the Harley-Davidson group from Atlanta. Reservation must be booked by August 1. If you are thinking about going, go ahead and make your reservation so if we need more rooms we can possibly get them. Last year we ran out of rooms and some had to stay at other motels/hotels around town and did not get the group rate. Please book as soon as possible.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
RIDE TO THE BORDER (LAFIESTA) RECAP
This started out as a very somber day as many of us learned of the terribly sad shuttle disaster. Our hearts and prayers are with the families. With that said, we continued with our planned ride with about 30 people attending. We did however make some positive changes. First, we did not go to the "Border." Prior to the ride, I stopped by and visited with Bert Ponce, a fellow Harley rider and the manager of LaFiesta Restaurant on South Park in Carrollton. I asked if he would like host our group, he agreed, he did one better by offering a 10% discount for the event. An invitation extended to Bert to join us on our ride Saturday and was pleased to see Bert and fellow rider Max Moore (new chapter members, they had such an awesome time they joined before we left the restaurant) join us. Change two and three, we had Ed Chowning leading the pack and Gene Williams running sweep, both working toward completing their Road Captain's training. On a safety note, hats' off to William Hill for heads up driving. He properly looked over his right shoulder before changing lanes, avoiding an impromptu date with a co-ed in a red Cavalier. If your name was not on the sign in sheet, then you missed a pleasant ride.
Doug Turner, Road Captain
SWEETHEART RIDE RECAP
Well it was very cold (about 31º at 11:00 a.m.) for our Sweetheart Ride to Dave & Busters on February 8th, but we still managed to have five people show up on bikes and four people in cars. No one showed up at D&B to meet us, so it was only nine for lunch but we still had a good time. A few of us even stayed after lunch and played some pool (or at least attempted to play pool). I have to say thank you to Scott Vandiver for leading the bikes, and to William Hill for letting me lose graciously at pool and not just once but several times.
