DIRECTOR'S REPORT
THANK YOU, CHRIS AND EDDIE
While I was attending P.O.T., we had numerous opportunities to discuss common chapter problems with our counterparts from other dealers in all parts of the country. One of the subjects that came up was the amount of involvement and support the dealers provided to the chapters. As I listened, I contrasted what I heard from others to what we experience here at the Atlanta chapter. When I was able to share the kind of dealer support, we get for our chapter the common response was "Wow, that's great!"
Most of the chapters I talked to get minimal support from their dealers and some see no support at all. Others report that if they get support it often comes at the price of not having the power to make their own decisions except perhaps on the smallest of things. One chapter who was particularly less than pleased stated that their dealer had told them the only reason he formed a chapter is because the Motor Company expected it. I'm not sure how long this guy has been a dealer, but I think he is missing something here.
If you talk to enough dealers I think most would tell you that an active H.O.G. Chapter is considered an asset. It may be hard to quantify, but a large, active chapter with many enthusiastic members bodes well for the business. Perhaps it is totally an intangible, but it does have tremendous value. After all, the H.O.G. members are the ones who will communicate to the many, unknown potential Harley buyers/members the desirability of the Harley experience. Further, by adding to the Harley experience of current owners, customer loyalty is enhanced.
The Atlanta chapter is truly blessed to have what I would call the best of both worlds---maximum support and maximum autonomy to determine for ourselves what we want our chapter to be and how to do it--or put another way, minimal interference on the day to day stuff. I think Chris and Eddie well recognize the benefits of having a large, active chapter. To wit, we get financial support like no other chapter I've talked to; additionally we are fed at meetings at no charge, we're offered a shopping discount and treated to a really good business relationship with our dealer. Finally, they even have an employee dedicated to delivering new bikes and talking up the chapter as part of the delivery process. If you don't think all of this is so, then visit another chapter and witness the interaction of the dealer with the members and talk to their
officers about what support they get. I daresay any other metro chapter will fall short of our situation.
So next time you see Chris or Eddie, take a moment to thank them for their support. Think about where we might be without their generosity and commitment to our chapter's well being. Their support is a huge factor in our success and ability to move forward!
So to Chris and Eddie, "thank you" for your concern and support that we all ride and have fun!

DALE MOOREFIELD RIDE RECAP
The annual trek down to Bostwick, Georgia for barbecue and stew was a fun and scenic ride. Allan Farmer led this traditional favorite of the Atlanta chapter and we had folks from all over join the ride, including two photographers from Brooklyn, N.Y.
The photographers, Alyson and David, were here to shoot pictures to accompany John Halyer's article on H.O.G. which should be appearing either this month or perhaps in the August issue of Fortune Magazine (some of you may have talked to John at the chapter picnic). Alyson and David said they had a great time and they shot photos for about five hours, doing road shots, portraits of nearly everyone and candid scene shots of the Bostwick venue. The ride looked really cool from my perspective, which was the very last bike, as there was about a good mile to mile and a half of bikes (est. 200+) moving down the road, snaking their way through rural Georgia. Alyson had a blast as she had never been on a bike before and this was a really different shoot for her.
Allan got us there in time to be among the first in line and we only had to wait about 45 minutes before they began serving. It was delicious, as we have all come to expect from this event, and in my case kicked off an entire weekend of overeating! It was also a little cooler than past 4th of July rides and I think everyone was thankful for that. Both the ride and the meal were preceded by saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the U. S. flag.
After the BBQ, Dave Devlin, who had been transporting Alyson, and I took them down to Madison to show them some southern architecture including the courthouse. As a note of interest, the courthouse along with several of the old antebellum homes there were built by none other than Allan Farmer's great-grandfather! At this point we headed home and
our photographers headed back to Atlanta, saying something about getting into motorcycling! Two more converts!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride
We had an awesome turnout for the Sixth Annual Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride on July 4. A "BIG BIG" THANKS to Allan Farmer for setting up and leading the ride for another great job "Well Done!" A special thanks to McDonough Police that help us get out of town, Henry County Deputies, Jon Spratlin and Mike Corley, and Newton County Deputies, Brent Langley and Coley Cooper that escorted us all the way to Bostwick, and the wonderful people of Bostwick for making us welcome. It was a great ride, and bar-b-que; I'm sure Dale appreciated the thought. Dale was a special person, loved his motorcycle, riding with his friends and eating. I am sorry that more of his friends did not take a few hours out their day to pay tribute to Dale and his favorite activities. I know he would have appreciated the thought.
Jerry Flynn
This to update you on our first Member of the Month, Jerry Flynn. If you ever talked with Jerry, you know he has a raspy voice. He thought that he had overcome Stage 2 vocal cancer. On May the 28, he was to have throat surgery, but the doctor had to abort the surgery because they found the cancer had spread down into Jerry's lungs. The prognosis is not good, but as Shyra said back in April, "Jerry is a fighter." We all send Jerry and his family our prays and sincerely believe he will be back riding with us soon. Jerry is taking chemotherapy treatments, and as most know, this is very strength draining. If you would like to send Jerry a Get Well Card, his address is: 445 Wellington Way Jonesboro, GA, 30238. Let's fill Jerry's mailbox with cards to let him know we are thinking of him. Keep Jerry in your prayers.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
I think of our chapter as an extended family with a crazy cousin, a witty grandpa, sweet aunt and those hooligan's that nobody talks about. We sometimes agree to disagree but we are still held together by a bond -- one of our brother and sister needs our support. On Fathers Day, some of you gave up that day to give Jerry and Judy Flynn that support when they
renewed their wedding vows. Let's not stop there; we need to keep them in our hearts and thought every day.
I'm very excited to have Terri Felton as our new L.O.H. Officer. She has a lot of great ideas and is a well organized, strong leader. The Ride Captains and I are looking forward to working with Terri. She has our full support along with, I'm sure, you our chapter. She has started her training on being a ride captain and will be leading rides soon.
Now, you know one of those crazy cousins ( just kidding Roger) that I talked about earlier, well he just made Ride Captain. Roger Smith has been working hard with training, helping lead and running sweep on rides. He is another fine addition to the ride group and has some great new ideas and rides. I would also like to thank all the better halves of the ride captains for their support and help, without you we could not do what we do so effectively. Thanks to you, our chapter, for all your support and PARTICIPATION!
Participate…It's Fun!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
MEET TERRI FELTON, LADIES OF HARLEY OFFICER
I am married Jerome, and we have two children, Brett - 17 and Jacklyn - 13. I'm not a native of Atlanta, but have been here for about 10 years; we currently live in Powder Springs. I have always been a Harley fan because my father owned several during the course of my childhood. Having been a passenger for years, I made a promise to myself that one day I would ride my own Harley. I took the Riders Edge course last September, and now you can hardly keep me off my Heritage Softail Classic. My husband and I became involved in the Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter in October and have been active members ever since. I became the L.O.H. Officer in late June and am looking forward to working with our ladies to bring some new things to the table.
Thanks to everyone at the last Chapter meeting for the warm welcome into Ladies of Harley. Being fairly new to the Chapter and to riding, I know there's lots for me to learn, but I'm really excited about everything and ready to jump right in.
Speaking of jumping right in, we had our first LOH meeting on July 10th, and had a pretty good turn out (17 ladies and a few gentlemen). A lot of great ideas were passed around so you should be seeing the results of those soon. I think the ladies of our Chapter are ready to pitch in and make our L.O.H. the best.
The Watermelon Festival was a pretty good success considering the rain and the low turn out. We had a lots of watermelon and tons of fun. For those that didn't make it you REALLY missed a good time! Congratulations to our contest winners:
Seed spitting (with 31 feet) - Lee Benton
Speed eating - Lee Benton in the over 10 age group and Mercedes Morgan for the 10 and under age group
Arm wrestling - Tom Sigerfoos
Watermelon dash (boy was this a funny event!) - Roger Smith in the over 10 age group and Mercedes Morgan in the 10 and under age group
Hula hoop - Nicole Swafford (10 and under age group - the adults just couldn't handle this one)
Water balloon toss - Gene and Sheila Williams

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Every month I cover either a safe riding topic or a service tip, but this month I want to try something different. I want to
say THANK YOU! Everyone is riding safer and seems to be more aware of the importance of maintaining their bikes. I'm really happy about the feed back that I'm getting. This is great, let's keep it rolling this way. I know that this was not my typical article but just had to say Thanks.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

GREETINGS HOGS and HOGETTES!
I want to congratulate our MEMBER OF THE MONTH for August -- Gerald and Mary Ann Cline. Thanks so much for your support that you give the chapter and for being so involved. Also, Mary Ann deserves a round of applause for graduating Rider's Edge! Great Job and Ride Safe!
I am sending out a call for Volunteers. I've posted a notice on the H.O.G. board at the dealership and put the clipboard in Rene's office. If you ever want to help out with any activity or event, please go by and sign up. Don't worry you will not be called for everything, we just need to start a list and we will use it to branch out. Thanks so much for all the help you volunteers have given already - you are very appreciated!
I am so excited about the MDA fund-raiser this year. Last year we raised almost $2,000.00 -- it was the most we have raised to date. I would love to beat that this year and "WE" can do it. Last year we did a poker run and had a great turn out. This year we are going to spice things up and do a Scavenger Hunt. Oh what fun this will be! It will be held on Saturday, August 10th. Sign in will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the cost will be $25.00 per entry fee. The way it will work is that you will have until 4:30 p.m. to get as many items as possible on the list and return to the pavilion behind the dealership with your items. This event is open to members and non-members so spread the word. You do not have to be on a motorcycle to participate but all items that will be on the list are "bike friendly." I can't say too much more. It's a secret! MARK YOUR CALENDERS AND COME HAVE SOME FUN FOR A GREAT CAUSE!
I want to congratulate our new Ladies of Harley officer, Terri Felton, for hosting such a wonderful L.O.H. meeting. She had a fantastic crowd and covered a great deal.
A few reminders -- mark your calendar for our 17th Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Anniversary Party on Sunday, September 17. Bring the whole family for some fun and games. Next, start thinking of what you are going "to be" for the 2nd Annual Harley-ween Party. It will be tough to beat Rene's "Mimi" costume from last year, so start working on it now!
The meetings have been going so well...thanks everyone for your participation and support. We are growing bigger than ever! We're aware that the June meeting went a little long and will see to it that it will not happen again. If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to voice them at the meetings. Also, if you did not already know, the business meeting, normally held the Tuesday before the chapter meeting, is opened to everyone. Feel free to join us and voice your opinion, we value your opinion, good or bad, but especially like to hear the good!
That is all for now - I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful time at the 100th celebration.
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

HISTORIAN/PHOTOGRAPHER'S REPORT
Four Years Ago This Month, August 1998
5th Annual Ride to Macon for the baseball game between Macon Braves and Augusta Jackets.
The group departed from the BP station at exit 69 on a beautiful ride down the back roads and through the Piedmont Wild Life Preserve to Juliette, GA. The group stopped for lunch at the Whistle Stop Café and had those famous Green Fried Tomatoes. Part of the group also enjoyed browsing in the various shops in the little town. We had a few more folks join us in Juliette. Then a couple from the Macon Chapter led us down and around Macon. We saw some of the beautiful homes of Macon, the Almond Brothers recording studio and areas they frequented along with their grave site.
That evening the group joined other Macon Chapter members and went to the ball game. The Braves rallied to win 11 to 6 against the Augusta Jackets. Part of the group spent the night at the Quality Inn and had a leisurely ride on the back roads returning home.

The Dale Moorefield Memorial Ride was good fun. It was my first time and will hopefully not be my last. I liked the way that those in charge kicked things off. I was proud to be part of such a classy group and even more proud to be an American. I, especially, enjoyed the ability to run stop signs and red lights while having a police escort. Although I did not
know Dale, it sounds like he understood what it is really all about. May his eulogy live on.
We have a lot of freedom and it truly is worth fighting for. I hope and pray that none of us live to see the day that it is taken
away.

MEET ROGER SMITH, NEW RIDE LEADER
I am 39 and holding, holding on to a 2000 Road King. I am a native Georgian, born and raised in Smyrna. I work as an outside salesman for RTM Supply in Mableton. My hobbies include upholstery, NASCAR, and my new hobby, riding my HD with my wife. I have been an Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. member since the fall of 2001. Have enjoyed meeting new and old members every time we have a meeting or a ride. So far I have the following rides planned:
Alpine Steakhouse Ride - On Sunday, August 11, I will be leading a lunch ride to Alpine Steakhouse in Douglasville. If you like ribs that fall off the bones, steak that you can cut with a fork, then you do not want to miss this ride. They also serve salmon, monster hamburgers and much more! Meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 11:00 a.m., leave at 11:30 a.m.
Thunder Road/Dawsonville Pool Room - On Saturday, September 7, I will be leading a lunch ride to the Dawsonville Pool Room. After lunch, we will be heading to Thunder Road, a short ride down the road. Thunder Road is Georgia's Racing Hall of Fame. It takes you back to the Raymond Parks era, when racing was running "moonshine" in the North
Georgia Mountains. Thunder Road is also the home of Bill Elliott's family history and memorabilia. The building covers 40,000 sq. ft. of Georgia's racing history.
Come on and let's ride!

ROAD TRIP(S)
GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE
September 20-22, 2002
We are going to Gatlinburg, TN on September 20-22, 2002. We will leave on Friday and return on Sunday. We have rooms blocked at the Microtel Inn, 211 Historic Trail, Gatlinburg, TN and in walking distance of the Parkway. We have 20 rooms blocked until August 20. The rooms have one queen bed at $53.95 per night plus tax. Call 865-436-0107 and make your own reservation, and join us this fall trip to Gatlinburg via the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon Tail. On the
return ride on Sunday, we will ride a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

COVERED BRIDGE TOUR BEGINS
At our last member meeting, we introduced the "Covered Bridges of Georgia" Tour. This is a fun thing to do and will get you out riding; the cost is $20.00 and all profits go toward our chapter clubhouse. So get your guidebook at the member meeting or see René at the dealership, and start riding and working toward your official patch for completing the tour! You must only visit 10 of 15 bridges (see rules) to earn your patch. Its fun, so get started and as they used to say on T.V. "Kids, be the first in your neighborhoods." Some folks already have five or six under their belt.

NOCCALULA FALLS RIDE RECAP
Wow What A Rush!
The weather was perfect for what turned out to be the biggest ride I have led yet; 40 bikes and 55 people. I wish y'all had told me sooner, that you like 100' waterfalls, old street rods, and eating at The Top of The River. How about those fried dill pickles? Unfortunately we had two bikes that didn't make it. One cut a tire, and the other broke a throttle cable, and it is a new bike! I have a lot of people to thank, to carry this off as smooth as we did. The DEALER for coming out to pick up the bike with the flat and ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE for picking up the other bike. Thanks to the Sigerfoos', Lee, Andy, and Kevin, for waiting and helping until the trucks arrived. As I have said in the past, we will not leave you behind. Thanks to Gary, Roger, Wes, Andy and Lee for leading and sweeping the groups. A big thanks to all that came out and rode with us. Get ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, it's the best 20 bucks you will ever spend!

EL NOPAL LUNCH RIDE REVIEW
We had a turnout of twenty-one for the El Nopal lunch ride. Mother Nature was quite cooperative and decided that we did not need a repeat of the previous day's 98 degree temperatures. Rumbling through Austell, up and around Kennesaw Mountain, we ended up at our destination with reserved seats waiting on the patio.
As the chips-n-salsa were flying and drinks being served, I found myself observing all the good folks around me appearing to have a good time. This being my first official H.O.G. ride as a Ride Captain, I appreciated the good attendance and good cheer of the riders.
My congrats go out to James and Angel on their new Heritage Softail...it's a beauty. The smile on their faces was a mile wide.
Until we ride again.
