DIRECTOR'S REPORT
LEADING THE DREAM
Several of us just returned from Primary Officer Training (P.O.T.) and this year's theme was "Leading the Dream." Most of us have been once before at least, and each year the theme is a bit different than the previous session.
Leading the Dream was focused on the "what" and the "how" the chapter officer board goes about helping all of you, the members, realize your dreams as far as the Harley-Davidson experience is concerned. I would say nearly every single person who buys a Harley-Davidson motorcycle has some sort of preconceived idea of what the ownership experience will
be like following the purchase. The kinds of rides they envision for themselves and the kinds of things will they do on their bikes to make lasting memories are surely things they think about a lot as they anticipate the day they get the call and hear, "Your bike is in." Perhaps they have only a limited idea or perhaps they know from talking to friends who are already "members of the family" in better detail what they have to look forward to, but in any case I am confident that the "dreams" are there.
So how is your actual experience comparing to the fantasy you had when you bought your bike? Is our chapter providing you with the opportunities and excitement you had hoped for? Are you riding and having fun (another theme of the training, and a consistent one)? Are you making friends and finding common bonds with your fellow riders? We, as your
Officer Board, certainly hope that we are creating the kinds of opportunities you anticipated and that your Harley experience is all you thought it would be, if not more. If we are not doing this, then get involved and let us know your needs and we'll get more creative. As someone once said, "If you are having fun, tell someone else; if you are not, tell us" (Officer Board).
One opportunity you will have to create a memory that you will cherish for a long time will be to partake in the 100th Harley-Davidson Anniversary Kick Off/19th Annual H.O.G. Rally which is here in our own backyard beginning 11:00 A.M., Friday,
July 19. Remember Friday is restricted to H.O.G. members only, and that will be crowded enough, but wait until the weekend! This is your chance to be a part of history! Can you think of many other companies that have been around for 100 years? How about one who has been here 100 years whose birthday party you really care about going to?
Meanwhile, let us know if we can do anything to enrich your Harley-Davidson experience for you. I recall how I felt when I first began to participate and later got more involved and I can say that both Tommye and I never dreamed when we bought our bikes that we would be "into it" like we are. Riding and having fun is an understatement!

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?!
Down to Atlanta Motor Speedway that is…for one of the biggest events Harley has ever done. That's right. They are kicking off the 100th Anniversary starting right here in our back yard. You must be a part of this once in a lifetime event.
Just think of how far you are going to be able to hear the RUMBLE from all those HOGS. So be there or be square or round or anything else. JUST BE THERE!
June was a bang with all the rides and activities. We had something for everybody, middle of the week ride, Sonic Socials, TN State H.O.G. Rally, and something every weekend.
This month I'm proud to introduce a new ride captain, Andy Otwell. Andy comes from a sport bike background, but made the partial change over to Harley. I say partial change because he loves riding and scraping in the mountains. He's starting this month with two lunch rides close by but after that, all you experienced riders that like to run the twisties, get ready to scrape! So come on out and support one of your new ride captains and thank you for all your support you give all of the ride captains.
PARTICIPATE…IT'S FUN!!!

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
Hello Folks
Well it's almost here. Our Watermelon Festival! I hope to see all of you out for this great event. There will be LOTS of fun. Come watch your friends in the seed spitting contest or the watermelon eating contest, or both. It isn't too late, I still need suggestions from you on any more events that you would like to see July 13. I also need volunteers to help us July 13. If you can help, please call or e-mail me and let me know. It will be greatly appreciated.
Now, on a more somber note. This will be my last article for the Hogwash. I have stepped down from my position as L.O.H. Why? Well, I have several reasons, but the main one is time. Right now I really don't have the time to donate on more scheduled rides, etc. so the best thing I can do for the Chapter is step down and let someone come in who "can" donate more time than I have or can right now.
I want to tell all of you how much I have enjoyed being L.O.H. for the past one and ½ years and to thank each of you for making me feel welcome and supporting me as L.O.H. Officer and especially for supporting rides I led and events I held. I appreciate all of the comments, articles, ideas, etc. from all of you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all. It is with a heavy heart that I step down, but I know whoever steps in will do as well as or better than I have done. I would like to ask all of you one last favor. Please treat the new Ladies of Harley Officer with the same respect and love you gave me. She is going to need your help and your input. I will still be your Travel Agent, when asked. I will continue to work on your reservations for various rides that are planned. Hey, can't get rid of me totally and I will be on some rides in the future too. I'll look forward to seeing you out there on the road.
Ride when you can and be safe...Patty

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Summer is here, and so is the heat. When you go out riding, watch out for yourself and your friends. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are very serious heat related injuries. Make more frequent stops to cool down and re-hydrate. Please make yourselves more aware of heat related injuries and treatments.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

GREETINGS HOGS and HOGETTES!
I missed the meeting in May but I heard it was fantastic, and congratulations Terri Felton for being selected Member of the Month for July. We appreciate all the work you do to help out the chapter.
Finally, we are really getting down to only a few tickets left - maybe none by the time this is mailed out. For those of you who purchased tickets, keep your eyes out for a letter telling you when we will have the drawing. I can't wait. This will be a lot of fun!
I led my first ride on June 9 and I didn't get us lost! I led everyone over to my neck of the woods, McDonough. We ate at the Crow's Nest Café on Jodeco Road. The food was so YUMMY! It was really nice weather. The ride was just the right length. We had five bikes total. I hope to do this ride again. If you like home cookin', keep and eye out for this ride.
Our chapter has really grown, 850 plus members...that is fantastic! I would love to see more people attend our monthly meeting. This is a really great place to meet someone new to ride with. We have a good time and have a great meal afterwards, which is always provided by the dealership. If you have never attended one of our meetings would you please give it a try - you may even go home with a prize or two, so don't knock it until you try it.
Well I am keeping it short and sweet this month. Everyone ride safely and have fun.
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

WHO WAS DALE MOOREFIELD
Dale Moorefield was one of the founders of the Atlanta Chapter of the Harley Owner's Group (H.O.G.), the Captain of Detectives for Forest Park Police Department, Instructor at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Ga. and a dedicated motorcycle rider. He was a big-hearted, kind and gentle person, who never met a stranger and had the uncommon ability to make new acquaintances feel like an old time friend. Dale was famous for his "lunch rides" where he would suggest riding up to the Dillard House for lunch, and a couple hours after the meal the group would pass a sign saying "Welcome to Virginia!" on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Dale's idea of a lunch ride for burritos was going to Athens to "Compadres," which was fitting due to his outgoing and friendly personality.
Dale loved to ride motorcycles anywhere and anytime. It was the result of this passion that Dale is not with us today. In October of 1996, Dale was on a Blue Knight Ride up in Blue Ridge, GA, when he and his passenger were struck by a driver who ran the red traffic. Dale was Life-flighted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga and passed away due to a treatment error during surgery.
We remember Dale Moorefield by this Memorial Ride in his Honor to Bostwick, GA. for the best barbecue and stew you will ever put in your mouth. Dale loved Bostwick, the people, the barbecue and will be with us today on our trip in the open slot right behind the ride leader, Allan Farmer.

Meet Andy Otwell
New Ride Leader
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
I am native to Georgia and currently live in Dallas where I work and play. By day I work in Computer Security and by night I work on writing and recording music on my digital 8-track recorder. You can find me on back roads riding my 2002 Electra Glide Standard (Custom) or on the interstate getting lost in the ride, yet somehow finding myself at the same time (if not defining myself). I joined the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. in the Fall 2001 and have enjoyed the good spirits and comradery ever since.

ROAD TRIP(S)
MULTI CHAPTERS RIDE-IN TO THE 19th ANNUAL H.O.G. RALLY
July 19, 2002
Well, I wasn't sure we would be able to do it, but it looks like a joint chapters ride in to the 19th Annual H.O.G. Rally is becoming a reality.
I pitched the idea at P.O.T. to all the other metro Atlanta chapters and 5 of the 6 are interested. This is your chance to participate in what might be a historical event as we are limiting participation to the local chapters only.
WHEN: Friday, July 19
WHERE: ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY
MEETING PLACE: NEC PLANT, EXIT 218 (Hampton/McDonough Road) I-75S. Go south on I-75, exit at 218, turn
right and go about 300 yards and you will see the NEC plant on your left; turn in and proceed to the lefthand parking lot.
MEETING TIME: 8:30 AM
DEPARTURE TIME: 9:45AM
Staging for the ride is first come first serve. All chapter flags will be up front and the members will ride in staggered formation behind the flags in the order in which they are staged.
We will likely have a ride from the dealership down to the staging area. Maps to the staging area will be available beginning
July 1st at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta.

SOUTHERN HIGHROADS TRAIL RIDE
July 26-28
Join us for this 3-day, 2-night overnighter that will take you through some of the prettiest countryside in the southeast. We leave on Friday, July 26 and return on Sunday, July 28. Please note the motel and reservation information later in this article.
What is the Southern Highroads Trail? Basically it is the loop formed by US 76 in northern GA (and US 411 in western N. GA) and US 64 in western NC. Our trip is actually a modification of these routes with a detour into the northern portion of western NC thrown in.
Our ride the first day will take us across the Cherohala Skyway from eastern Tennessee into western North Carolina into Robbinsville. From here we will do the scenic loop around the Cheoha Dam and Fontana Lake and eventually stop for the night in Bryson City, NC. We will have a planned dinner on Friday night at the Nantahala Lodge, unless of course you want to be on your own. Prices for entrees run about $12 to 16 per person.
On day two, we will proceed a bit differently than last year, heading north out of Bryson City picking up the Blue Ridge Parkway inside the Cherokee's reservation. We will take that south and west eventually heading into Brevard, NC where we will stop for lunch at Hawg Wild BBQ, featuring some of the best hush puppies you have ever eaten. From here, we
will proceed on to Cashiers and Highlands and on into Franklin, NC where we will stop for the night. This day will be no less scenic than Friday and we'll pass several waterfalls along the route. Dinner here will be on your own and I will have suggestions by ride time.
On our return home we will travel US 64 and then drop onto US 76 near Hiawassee, GA. We'll have breakfast at the Country Cottage in Hayesville, NC about 4 mi. north of Hiawassee, which will be around an hour or so of riding before we eat. Then we'll head west on US 76 and take some back roads I have recently discovered from Blue Ridge, GA to Ellijay where we will come out on I-575.
So, if you like great scenery and good camaraderie join us for this ride and don't forget to bring your camera and film. The only thing that can disappoint us might be the weather, and we'll hope that cooperates for the weekend at least. I have only reserved the number of rooms indicated below but more than that can join the ride by making their own separate
reservations at these or other hotels in the area.
MOTEL INFORMATION:
BRYSON CITY: Friday, July 26, Rosewood Inn (828) 488-2194. Fifteen rooms are reserved under the name of Atlanta
H.O.G. Reservations must be made individually by you no later than June 26, 2002. Cost around $50.00. The motel is older, quaint and on the river, and is nice. Good firm beds!
FRANKLIN, NC: Saturday, July 27, Microtel 828 349-9000. Twenty rooms reserved, 10 double, 10 queens all nonsmoking. Reservations are held under the name of Harley Davidson of Atlanta and should be made individually by you no later than June 27. We stayed here last year, it is a nice motel, and is only about two years old or so. Price is $54.00.
Confirmation number is 49059.
WHAT: Southern Highroads Trail Ride---bring both rain suits and cold weather gear!
WHEN:July 26, 27 and 28 (Friday-Sunday)

GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE

We are going to Gatlinburg, TN on September 20-22, 2002. We will leave on Friday and return on Sunday. We have rooms blocked at the Microtel Inn, 211 Historic Trail, Gatlinburg, TN and in walking distance of the Parkway. We have 20 rooms blocked until August 20. The rooms have one queen bed at $53.95 per night plus tax. Call 865-436-0107 and make your own reservation, and join us this fall trip to Gatlinburg via the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon Tail. On the
return ride on Sunday, we will ride a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!
IRON BUTT DAY RIDE
The Iron Butt Day Ride turned into the windy butt ride. Did that come out right? Did I say it was cold too! The rain came on through in time for the ride, but it had a cold front behind it with wind gusts to 30mph. After we started out, we realized none of us were prepared for a day like this. At Cedartown we had a group discussion and decided this was no day to ride the Little River Canyon. So we went on to Cave Springs and ate at the Grey Horse. We are going to try it again later, and hopefully better weather. When weather conditions change, use your head, and don't push a bad situation, so you can ride another day and be able to enjoy it.
Thanks BIG V.

MAPLE STREET MANSION RIDE
June 1, 2002
The ride to the Mansion was a great one. We rode about 90 miles before stopping to eat at the Maple Street Mansion's sports bar in Carrollton. The weather was a little warm but not too bad. We had 13 bikes sign up for this one. Thanks Vernon Wright for being our sweep for the day. The food and spirits were great. The folks at the Mansion even let us enter the building before they were officially opened for business. However, the Mansion won't be the same anymore. Kevin and William saw to that. The waitresses had a blast along with all of us. Look for the picture on our Yahoo website and you'll
see what I mean. PS, I think Kevin and William will be trying to get a part time job there. Oh…thanks William for presenting me with the official H.O.G./Mansion Street doorag. Hope to see you all on my Sprayberry lunch ride on July 27.
