DIRECTOR'S REPORT
THE SEASON BEGINS IN EARNEST
By the time everyone reads this, Bike Week 2002 will be over. With some of the most fabulous weather we have had over the last two weeks, it looks like riding season is about to begin in earnest. Spring "officially opened" about 10 days ago, it's almost time for another Masters' down in Augusta, and I for one am ready to ride.
My article last month got clipped just a bit to fit it onto the front page and what got left off was my challenge to all our 700 plus members to make this "your best personal riding year ever". I specifically challenged each member to make it to 3
meetings and 5 rides.
This month we have a really nice calendar to help you get started towards that challenge. It includes two of our chapter's favorite rides: LaPrade's, up on Lake Burton, and also our annual spring ride to Charleston, SC.
The LaPrade's ride will offer everyone a chance to get into the "twisties" right off the bat, which is pretty typical for a ride to North Georgia. The food is great (Sunday is fried chicken) and the scenery can't be beat. Hopefully April 7th weekend won't offer a "last blast" of winter, but I imagine that in the early and latter parts of the day it will be cool. It is also the first day of daylight savings time so we can take the long way home without running out of light--don't forget to set your clocks forward.
Charleston is a wonderful ride and time to get away. The town is very quaint, with lots to see and do and the "Low Country" food offers temptations to the palate that you can't find just anywhere. There is a lot of history here too, both from the Civil War on a tour of Ft. Sumter as well as some WW II history over at Patriot's Point with a visit to the U.S.S.
Yorktown. The Battery in the springtime makes for some memorable photos and there are also several plantations to visit with their scenic gardens. By the way, for those of you who look forward to a stop at Sconyers BBQ in Augusta on the way down, I regret to inform you it has closed, after close to 30 years of operation. So, those are just two of the many rides we have planned for all of you this year. So come take part--enjoy the road and the sense of freedom you get when you are on your bike and also the fellowship of other riders. The recent glut in our service department has eased off some, so get your bike ready and dust off your "riding frame of mind" and let's go!!!
See you on the road!

I hope that everyone who went to Daytona had a great time. I know I sure did, and as some of you saw me know that I did. We had some great rides and activities in March, with more this month as well. Tom is doing his now famous Laprade's ride. If you like the mountains, this one is for you. Then Gary is going to Red Top Mountain for lunch and a good ride there, I'm sure. Then we have an overnighter to Charleston, our annual spring ride, which is awesome. We will have Larry leading us to El Jalapeno Mexican restaurant for some great Mexican food. So as you can see there is lots to do, and enjoy!!!

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Safety Officer's Report
Spring is finally here, so there are several things to keep in mind.
1. The temperature can change often, and this will cause tire pressure to fluctuate. This means, check your tires regularly.
2. Since the weather can change quickly, keep the cold weather gear and the rain gear in the saddlebags, just in case.
Soon everything will start to bloom and this can only mean lots of pollen. So now is the time to check/change/clean your bike's air filter. Most manuals recommend this every 5,000 miles (every other oil change). Refer to your shop manual or check with the service department if it's time to do this.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

Hello "Bikers" and "Bikerettes"
Hello, fellow members. I hope all of you who went to Daytona had a great time. I apologize for not being able to make the meeting in February. Our daughter had her tonsils out the day before. I'm glad the weather is starting to warm up. Santa gave me a beautiful red and ice Heritage Springer for Christmas and I have not been able to ride it like I want to. This winter has been brutal. Maybe I need to toughen' up or bundle up! I think now with spring here I'm ready to hit the street and put some miles on that bike.
For all of you members that were unable to make the meeting, Rene' took the honor of announcing our first "Member of the Month." I decided to do this because we have so many great members who participate in so many of our rides/activities. We want to show our appreciation. Our first "Member of the Month" is the one and only Jerry Flynn. This was an easy
decision, because Jerry is such a loyal and outstanding member. Jerry is a regular participant in Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. rides, meetings and activities. Thank you Jerry! For those of you who do not know Jerry personally, he is easy to spot at our meetings and events. Unless he is riding, he always has his sidekick with him and that is his precious grandson that is four years old. I would like to take this opportunity to honor our "Member of the Month".
Jerry moved to Jonesboro from Atlanta in 1970 and married his wife, Judy on June 2, 1972. They will be celebrating 30 years together this year - Happy Anniversary Jerry and Judy! Jerry has been riding motorcycles all his life. His father took videos of him, at age 13, riding his brother's Honda 305 around the yard. The smile on his face said it all. Jerry's first bike was a Sears Allstate 350 that he purchased in 1973. In 1975, he purchased a Kawasaki 850. He moved up in 1976 to a BMW 750. He rode this bike until one day he went to the BMW dealership and found his 1999 Ultra Classic Harley-Davidson, two-toned silver/blue. There was no turning back. Jerry has been a member of Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. since 1996, when his brother Charles Flynn invited him to visit a meeting. Jerry has a few other notches on his belt such as: National H.O.G. Life Member, 2000; Light for the Lost Councilmen, 2001; and American Diabetes Association in 1999. He became an advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation when his grandson, Michael, was diagnosed with Type One diabetes at 19 months old.
Jerry is quite a fighter; he overcame Stage 2 vocal cancer in March 2000. His love for Harley's was his signature during his radiation therapy. Jerry's cancer is in remission, but has damage to his vocal cords that only allows him to speak with little volume...but Jerry is strong and is optimistic about his voice returning...God Bless you Jerry!!
Besides riding of course, Jerry does have other hobbies that he enjoys. He enjoys watching baseball and fishing with his grandsons. He really loves to watch the boys ride the four-wheeler in the yard. The grandchildren are learning motorcycle safety at an early age. Those are some lucky kids.
Jerry and Judy are blessed with three daughters, Cindy, Ginger and Michelle. They have four grandchildren, Adrienne (6), Michael (4), Jeremy (4) and Krystina (17 months). Jerry and Judy are expecting two more grand babies this summer. It sounds to me like Jerry better invest in a few more Harley's. Apparently in order to become a son-in-law in the Flynn family
you must learn to ride motorcycles. His two youngest daughters are engaged and their future husbands are planning on getting bikes.
On behalf of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. and the owners and employees of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, we appreciate you Jerry, for being a loyal and supportive member. Congratulations on being our first "Member of the Month."
If you would like to suggest someone that you think should be honored as "Member of the Month" please e-mail me or call me. I will announce the "Member of the Month" at each meeting and the next month they will be spotlighted in the HOGWASH.
If you have not gotten your ticket for that 2002 Fatboy...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON!!! You can purchase the ticket anytime from the dealership from any of the employees. Rene', Michele, B.K., and I also have tickets. We only have about 200 tickets left. For more details, give me a call or e-mail me.
Have a great month and see you at the meeting...I can't wait to honor our second "Member of the Month."
Life is hectic, so stop and smell the flowers (but don't forget your Claritin)!
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

H.O.G. Around the Shop
I try and find something to write about while working at the shop on Saturdays. I was sick one Saturday, and on vacation the following, it was hard this month to come up with anything new. So I thought I would talk a little about the past.
One Saturday it rained all day, so I was just sitting around trying to stay out of trouble. Eddie Houghton was walking by and I stopped him and asked about the history of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, and some of the things that went into the current location. Eddie started working for Powell Hassel, the owner of Harley-Davidson of Atlanta back in June of 1969
at its original location on Cheshire Bridge Road, a cross from what is now the Colonnade Restaurant. In 1971 it moved to the location on Sylvan Rd. Ten years later Eddie purchased the shop from Mr. Hassel. It stayed on Sylvan Road until 1996 when the location on Thornton Rd. was completed. (I purchased my first Harley at Sylvan Road location 1992.)
When you look at the Thornton Road shop, it does not quite look like the cookie cutter Harley shop, you see around the country. I have always liked the nice wood accents at the shop. Eddie indicated that they started with it, and then tore it out and started over again. All design work had to meet with the approval of Harley-Davidson and much of it was done by
their people with guidance from Eddie and crew.
The old bike above the sales offices is a 1928; 500cc. restored by an airline pilot who then sold it to Eddie. It ran the last time they tried. I think we should try and talk Eddie into taking it down for the next anniversary party, get it running, and ride it around the Rider's Edge course. It seems like a waste to have it just sit there. Among the pictures on the walls are three of note. Over the ladies Motor clothes area, the one on the far left is a picture of Eddie in his racing days. The one of the woman sitting on a bike is Mr. Hassle's wife next to the clothes and accessories section of the shop while it was on Chesire Bridge Road. To the left over the sales section again, is a picture of an Atlanta Blueprint bike that came out of the Harley Archives. The rest are all generic Harley Archive pictures.
Back in the shop area is my favorite, the one of Travis Tritt on stage sitting on the Harley that was customized for him by Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. The guy in the Falcons jacket and the one on the drag bike is Jerry Glanville, former head coach of the Falcons. Bob Nelson is a long time customer shown with his children when his bike had 200,000 miles on it. I understand it now has 300,000. Last but not least is a picture by Scott Jacobs sitting over the rental desk. It is of Scotty Parker, the number One Harley Dirt Bike Racer.
The point of all this is there is more than meets they eye at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. Look around and enjoy the decor next time you visit. If you see Eddie say hello.
Speaking of old bikes, bring up the subject of this month's profile.
Meet Philip King
Philip King shown on his perch at the service desk has been with Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for five years. He worked as a mechanic for two years and has been on the service desk for the past three. He worked for another Harley dealer for four years before that. He has completed most of the PHD courses so he is up to speed on all the latest technology. He lives in Hiram, Georgia and is a native of the area. The only reason he does not ride a Harley is because his 1971 Electra Glide is in parts back in the shop. He is doing a complete restoration. The engine and transmission are finished and installed. He is working on a problem with the shifter but hopes to have it finished sometime soon. He does a little riding on a rice burner on the dirt bike areas around town. Being single, he gets to fish whenever he wants, usually off of his back porch. Remember call Philip or one of the other service writers to make an appointment for that next service.

El Jalapeno Dinner Ride
April 27, 2002
I will be leading a dinner ride to El Jalapeno Mexican Restaurant in Villa Rica on Saturday, April 27. We will meet at H-D Atlanta at 5:00 p.m. and leave at 5:30 p.m. The thirty-seven-mile journey should take sixty to seventy minutes with the ride officially ending at El Jalapeno on Highway 78. For those needing to return to the Atlanta area quickly after dinner, the restaurant is only one half mile from I-20. So come join us for a fun ride and some great Mexican food.

CiCi's Pizza Ride
February 16, 2002
The lunch ride to CiCi's Pizza in Douglasville had a little bit of everything. The weather was fantastic and, as usual, the food was plentiful. After getting headed in the right direction, twenty people on fifteen motorcycles made the thirty-mile back road journey from H-D Atlanta without incident. We had five individuals attending a chapter ride for the first time and at least one attending her first group ride ever. Good job Carla!
Members came from: Austell, Bowdon, Cedartown, Dallas, Jonesboro, Mableton, Newnan, Rome, and Temple to participate in this ride. It was nice to see new blood show up and share in the camaraderie exhibited by all the veteran chapter members. So it seems everyone had a safe, enjoyable ride and headed home with a full belly. Enough said!

Evergreen Chinese Restaurant Ride
If you like cold weather and you didn't go on this ride, you missed it. We froze our butts off, (ask Lee). We had a couple bikes and a couple of vehicles but we had a great time with good food and company. This is a motorcycle-riding group, but when the weather is BAD, vehicles are always welcome, (right Bill). Thanks to everyone that came out and participated.
Thank you Big V.
