DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Brother and Sisters...You're Invided!
Last month I discussed the various benefits of being a H.O.G. member at both the national and local chapter levels. Those benefits are what sets being a Harley owner apart from other brands of motorcycles. The Motor Company is constantly looking for ways to improve your Harley ownership experience, designed to insure both your satisfaction with your bike and your future loyalty to Harley-Davidson. While those benefits are many, feeling the camaraderie of Harley ownership comes only from sharing and being with others----this is THE ONE benefit that truly makes Harley ownership different and better than any other brand of bike on the road, bar none. And your local chapter is the only place to get it!
But merely belonging isn't enough--the only way to experience the camaraderie is through participation. Without participation, the local chapter and H.O.G. itself for that matter, would be just another club name. Taking part in what is offered is the only way to feel the "brotherhood" and "sisterhood" of the Harley family. But is the national family enough? I don't think it is. I recall the first time I went to Sturgis in the summer of '97--I had been a Harley owner for about seven months, a Harley-Davidson of Atlanta customer for about four months and I was not a local chapter member anywhere at the time. While I was in Sturgis I recall feeling the rush, "being a part of it all, this is really cool" feeling, all the while sensing that perhaps "normal civilians," if you will, regarded us Harley owners as something special and different. But upon
returning home, it seemed shortly that something was missing. That "Sturgis" feeling had begun to fade. It was about this time I joined the Atlanta Chapter, not fully realizing why. It just seemed like the next thing one should do.
It was only after I began taking part in rides and some of the activities with the chapter that I began to feel the rebirth of a sense of connection and the continuance of the Harley mystique; where on an unspoken basis, I knew I had similar feelings as my fellow members about our bikes, riding and the thrills of being on the open road. It provided a place to be with friends, and together ponder the perpetual question, "Boy wouldn't it be great to take a trip to____? Just fill in the blank and start thinking of that next ride. It was really neat to have this group called the Officer Board (whoever they were) in charge of planning rides for me...all I had to do was show up and take part. All the planning and thinking had been done for me. Yeah, that's right...just show up, ride and have a great time. This was what I had been looking for.
As obvious as it became to me that the local chapter was what I needed to provide a place for the regular continuation of the Harley experience, participation in chapter rides and activities is most often at a level much lower than the sponsoring dealer and Officer Board would like to see. Our chapter is no exception to this trend. At P.O.T. (Primary Officer Training) there is an entire afternoon discussion devoted to the whys and wherefores of participation, or more accurately the lack thereof. No one seems to have many answers; or at times even a few. It is the one subject that continually puzzles us all. In the case of the Atlanta Chapter, why do we have 700 to 800 members year in, year out, but mostly the same 40 or 50 ever participating at one time at meetings, rides and other fun? Is it really possible that 650 folks who bought bikes do not like to ride and have fun?
Your dealer, Officer Board and Ride Captains have, over the past four years, racked their brains and imaginations to put together a riding/activities program that could appeal to just about every riding need--Saturday rides, Sunday rides, overnight rides, lunch rides and impromptu (show up, we'll surprise you) rides. We have tried to insure that no group is overlooked for any reason or circumstance. The Officers have openly asked for your input to make sure we are on course with what our membership wants, yet pleas for suggestions, surveys and questionnaires go largely unanswered. Leaves one wondering what to do, or if what is being done is what we should be doing. Isn't it logical to assume that if the programs were right, we see more articipation?

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Did you know as a member of H.O.G. your are entitled to the Towing Reimbursement Program? The following explains the program:
Towing Reimbursement Program
Full members who require towing service for their Harley-Davidson® or Buell® motorcycle when 50 miles (80 kilometers)or more away from home are eligible for reimbursement under the Harley Owners Group® Towing Reimbursement Program. Members should call an authorized Harley-Davidson® dealer for towing service. (Authorized dealers are listed in your Touring Handbook.) If the Harley-Davidson dealer is closed or unable to provide service, the member can call an authorized towing service. (An authorized towing service is a business entity engaged in towing operations.)
The Towing Reimbursement Program is applicable only for a Harley-Davidson or Buell motorcycle owned by and registered to a current full or full life member of the Harley Owners Group. It is available in the U.S. and Canada.
The H.O.G.® Towing Reimbursement Program is not a substitute for repairs and is intended for use only in emergencies. In fairness, the Harley Owners Group reserves the right to refuse service or to cancel/not renew the membership of a member excessively using the service. Excessive use of road service is usage considerably above the membership norm.
To receive your reimbursement, you must:
• Be 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more away from home.
• Pay the full amount due for services provided to you.
• Send the completed Towing Reimbursement Program Form (available at your local dealer, in the Members-only section of www.hog.com, or by contacting the H.O.G. office) with the original towing receipt to: Towing Reimbursement Program, c/o H.O.G. office (incomplete forms and copies of receipts will not be accepted).
• Submit request within three months of tow.
The Harley Owners Group will reimburse you for your towing charges up to $100. All costs in excess of $100 are the member's responsibility. This program is not intended to cover all motorcycle related issues; it is meant to supplement your out-of-pocket costs in certain situations. Service performed on your motorcycle after you are picked up is not covered under this program. Towing from your home is not covered.
A check will be mailed to you within four to six weeks of the date H.O.G. receives the proper paperwork.
Always make sure your motorcycle is in top condition before you leave on a trip.

RIDE DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Calling All Hogs! Are you ready to ride? I hope you are, because one of my goals, as Ride Director, this year is to have a ride or event every weekend during our riding season. Take a look at the calendar and our tentative schedule, but we are still not satisfied. We still want your input, your ideas. We have received some good ideas and we are working on them, but we want more.
We have had great turn outs at our chapter meetings and that's a good thing, but we would like to see more. The meetings are fun, with eating, socializing and getting all the up-to-date news. This makes the rides are even better. You can do all of the above on rides, plus riding your motorcycle and enjoying the day. That's the reason you bought your motorcycle...TO RIDE IT! Right???.

LADIES OF HARLEY'S REPORT
I was at the dealership the other day and over heard someone say to someone else there that "they were there to buy a helmet and they were going to use their discount card?" I'm sorry folks, this really upset me, to the point that I felt compelled to write about it this month. So here goes. This is the scoop on your "discount card." You don't have a discount card! As a member of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G., Eddie and Chris are kind enough to give the members a discount on purchases made in the store. When you receive your discount in the future, please remember to say "Thank You!" Any discounts given are at the discretion of the dealer as an independent business person and/or NOT a privilege of H.O.G. membership (nationally or at the dealer level). Dealers may place stipulations on discounts, some don't honor discounts, period. Local chapter membership may be a requirement for an offered discount. Discounts, if any may be based on participation in meetings, events, and/or rides. Remember that dealers sponsor chapters, and the Charter for H.O.G. Chapters states nothing about discounts. The practice of discounting for H.O.G. members is a dealer "gift," and not a right. Please say "Thank You," if you receive a dealer discount for belonging to the largest, most dynamic factory-sponsored motorcycle club in the world, Harley Owners Group!

Folks, this was a fantastic ride last rides year. Ask anyone who went. We will leave early on Friday. You will have Friday night and Saturday free to do what you like. Saturday evening the group will meet and will ride to Clarksville for a scrumptious catfish dinner. Yes, they have other things too if you don't like catfish. Sandy, I know you will go. Sandy never had catfish before last year's ride and she loved it. Saturday night, I am still working on a few things. We'll see what comes up for that time period. If there is any way for you to go, please do. You'll have a blast.

SAFETY OFFICER'S REPORT
Now it finally appears that the riding season is here, Hopefully only one or two cold days left. The itch to ride can get bad at times, but there are a few things to check before you head out.
1. Check tire pressure and tread condition.
2. Make sure that all of your lights are working.
3. Check brakes before and during the start of your ride to insure that they are working like they should.
4. Check engine oil and all other fluids to be sure they are at proper levels.
If you are ever unsure about anything, check with the service department or if you do it yourself refer to your shop manual.
When you do ride, remember to practice safe riding, always keep an eye out and be aware of traffic. Remember that the people in the cars may have spring fever and might not be paying 100% attention.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!

Whassup!
Dear, Whassup;
My husband and I bought a new motorcycle for Christmas and have gone on some rides and I have a question. I noticed that the people in front of us would start pointing down as we rode but I could never figure out what they were doing.
Signed, Confused
Dear Confused;
It sounds like they were pointing out hazards in the road for you to watch out for. It could have been tires, mufflers, carburetor, dead animals or other garbage that you were being alerted to, so you could avoid it. However, should we spot enough road kill we could have a road-kill stew for our next meeting!
Thought for the month: Remember bikes don't leak oil...they're just marking their territory.
What's your feedback on this? It will be in the April HOGWASH.
Let me know!

DEALER LIAISON'S REPORT
H.O.G. Around the Shop
Things have been busy around Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. Ticket sales are up for the Fat Boy give away, bikes have been coming in the door and going out with new smiling customers. I see more and more people I recognize as new bike owners coming back to add new goodies to their bikes, or get that all important first service.
While talking to some people in the service waiting area I took notice of two boards on the back wall. I started asking about them and learned they hold some very important information that we as bike owners should know about. I guess we all have heard about the mechanics being PHD certified. I still have not found out what PHD stands for, but I now know what it means. Harley-Davidson has available about 160 different video tape programs. Mechanics work their way through one of these tapes along with a workbook. When finished they take a test on their knowledge. Once passed it is entered in the
great computer in Milwaukee, and that person is PHD certified on a particular subject. If you go back in the service waiting area you will see a sign with some mechanics names on it and a column of red bars under their name. Each red bar represents a video program that has been studied and passed. Harley-Davidson of Atlanta has a bunch of mechanics with a lot of bars under their name.
Next to that sign is one about the mechanics level of expertise. There are four levels, the top one Master Service Technician being the most advanced. Each level represents time on the job, courses taken, and most important the support of the dealer. The top level means that the mechanic has been to Milwaukee for a full one week training class at least 20 times. Go back there and see for yourself I think you will be impressed. Next time you are thinking of having your brother-in-law work on your bike remember all the training that goes into a professional mechanics credentials.
Back to the front of the shop, if you are thinking about a new bike, make sure you get with one of the sales people to discuss your options, not only on the bike you want, but the many extended warranties and financial options available. While trying to figure out what to put on a new bike, get with Mark Z, the chrome specialist, his desk sits over in front of the other front door that is never used.
>If you are looking for other parts, the folks in the parts department are up to date on all the latest goodies. One of them is our featured employee this month.
