Meet the 2002 Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Officers
It is with pleasure, excitement and enthusiasm that I announce the Atlanta Chapter Officers for 2002. After considerable thought and careful consideration, I have selected the following individuals to serve the Chapter in the following positions:
I respectfully request that you support these fine individuals as they begin their duties and roles for an exciting new year with an action-packed schedule of events. In addition, I appreciate your continued support of and assistance to the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Vernon Eldred, our new Ride Director, will be appointing Ride Captains. If you or anyone that you know would be interested serving as a Ride Captain, please get in touch with Vern. His phone number is 678-715-0838 or email him at Vwelbg6@cs.com.
Sincerely,
Chris Houghton Vice President, Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Inc. 770-944-1340 chris@hdatlanta.com
AS WE BEGIN YET ANOTHER GREAT YEAR
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Perhaps for many, if not most, this holiday season was particularly special in light of the events of September 11, 2001. It seems many of us are rethinking what is really important and what we can't take for granted. I know I spent a lot of time reflecting on the one of the greatest gifts we all have...the freedom to ride the open road on a Harley-Davidson!
As your new Chapter Director, I am looking forward to a really great year for our chapter in 2002. Your Board of Officers will be working very hard to bring you a year filled with riding opportunities and activities that will hopefully see more members than ever before involved and taking part in what the Chapter has to offer. We will continue with a lot of our traditional and favorite rides and we will be adding new ones, too, to keep changing things around a bit and try to peak everyone's interest. As examples, we will have a couple of rides to LaPrade's again, along with the Macon Braves Ride; I am also planning to do the Southern Highroads Trail ride again, and have given some thought to a ride down the Natchez Trace. I am sure the other officers have their favorites too, as well as a surprise ride or two we have not done before. PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE A RIDE YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO, LET THE RIDE DIRECTOR OR ONE OF THE OTHER OFFICERS KNOW!
My vision for the Chapter is simple...let's ride and have fun, a lot! My hope is that as many of you as possible will take part in what we have to offer. I hope our "regulars" will encourage some of the members who have been less active in recent years to return to participating with us. I have said before that the only "pay" the officers receive is seeing your satisfaction, through participation in rides and activities and also by attending meetings. The entire Officer Board is open and available to you and our business meetings (normally the third Tuesday of the month) are open to you as well. I encourage you to come and offer your input. While our vision is solid, our plans are flexible...we welcome your suggestions and comments on how we are meeting your needs and what we can do to accommodate your interests. If there are any activities or programs you think would be of interest or benefit to the membership, again, let us know. Also remember that the Officer Board cannot do everything themselves...we are always looking for volunteers for various things and will ask many of you to help out. By now, perhaps some of you have already been contacted for such things as the New Member Welcome Committee or to be a Greeter at Chapter Meetings.
The H.O.G. credo says that having a Harley is about "doing" not merely "owning." I challenge the Chapter to have its best year ever...all of us, collectively and individually are the stewards of the Harley-Davidson legacy and our right to ride. Lets not take that for granted!
RIDE FREE, RIDE SAFE, RIDE OFTEN!
Tom SigerfoosDirector,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
I hope you had a good Holiday and got all the chrome your credit card could carry. I want to thank Eddie and Chris for an awesome Christmas Reception and the 25% discount that night. The line at the checkout was, at times 15 to 20 members deep, clutching their Christmas Goodies. I have heard from some who said they did not know about the Christmas Reception. Please take time to read your HOGWASH and you will know what going in the Chapter.
Let me thank everyone for your support of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. last year and for your continued support this year. I think we have a great group of Officers lined up this year. All the Officers need your continued support. We all spend a lot of time trying to figure out what we think will interest you and get your participation in meetings and rides. If you have anything in mind that might get you on a ride or other chapter members would enjoy, please let us know and we will be glad to discuss it with you and see where it will fit into the schedule. We already have a calender started with a lot of rides, especially the ones that are old favorites, according to participation we have had on these rides. Hope to see you soon participating with the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G..
Ride Safe and Have Fun!

Hello Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Members! I'm Vern Eldred and I was a Ride Captain last year. This year I'm your Ride Director and will also be an active Ride Captain. I hope to do a good job at filling our calendar with rides for you. To do this, I need your help. I will be looking for POSITIVE people who are ORGANIZED, that PARTICIPATE and that are STRONG leaders. I'm also asking you for ideas or suggestions for new rides. If you would like to lead a ride just let me know. Please contact me or Assistant Ride Director, Gary Langmaid with your idea. I am looking forward to working with our chapter and you.
PARTICIPATE - IT'S FUN!
Vernon "Big V" EldredRide Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Meet Gary Langmaid
Hi, I'm Gary Langmaid, your new Assistant Ride Director. I will be assisting Vern Eldred (our new Ride Director) andthe other Ride Captains in the upcoming year with all types of rides and training. We're hoping for a great year with numerous rides and events for everyone. I will also be assisting B.K. with the "New Riders/Members Orientation Classes." I have been a member of the Chapter since last April and I have made 95% of the rides since then. I'm originally from Pensacola, FL where I have held numerous positions with the chapters down there including Assistant Director and Senior Ride Captain. I hope to bring to the Chapter all my experiences. I moved from Pensacola to Atlanta in 2000 after taking an early retirement from the Southern Company after 20 years of service. I currently work for the CDC (Center for Disease Control) as a Software Engineer. If you have a suggestion to make about a trip you would like to see us take, jot it down and give it to me or one of the officers the next time you see us at the shop or "out in public." I am looking for new ideas for the Chapter. There is even talk going around about "Iron-Butt Rides." RIDE SAFE
Gary LangmaidAssistant Ride Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Happy New Year to all the members of H.O.G. and all the Ladies. I hope that you all enjoyed a great season of riding this past year and are looking forward to another in 2002. If any of you have any suggestions for a ride for the Ladies next season, please contact me and let me know as soon as you can. You can email me at faithrider@msn.com or call me at home at 770-948-3668. I also have a fax and that number is 770-948-1570. I would love to hear your suggestions.
LADIES, LADIES, LADIES - Are you a H.O.G. Member?
You say NO; why not? What, you don't ride? Whether you are a Harley Chick (rides her own Harley), a Harley Babe (rides on the back seat) or a Harley Honey (provides the support wagon for her man). You are invited, and need to be a part of the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Ladies of Harley! Did you know that even if you don't have your own motorcycle, you can become an associate member? How? You need a sponsoring full member (your husband, a boyfriend, a mother, a father, a friend, etc.). Call 1-800-CLUB-HOG and join the National H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) and let them know you would also like to be a member of L.O.H. (Ladies of Harley) at no extra charge. Associate H.O.G. member dues are only $20.00 a year. You get a pin and an embroidered patch, and entitlement to participate in H.O.G.-SPONSORED events. H.O.G. sponsors local chapters, ABC's of touring, Ladies of Harley Memories Contest, and Mileage Program. Once you're a National Member, I'd love you to join our local Atlanta Chapter, for only $20.00 a year, which entitles you to participate in an action-packed year with the best chapter in Georgia (I guess I'm a bit biased) and a 10% discount on all your purchases (excluding motorcycles), at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. Come on and join us! You'll have a blast even if you don't ride. If you have your own motorcycle, then join as a full member for $40.00 and enjoy added benefits as a national H.O.G. full member.
In the Atlanta Chapter, we do not separate the Ladies from the Men; we are just out to encourage more of the women of motorcycling to get involved in a traditionally male-dominated activity. You see more women moving from the back of the motorcycle into the driver's seat. Ladies of Harley is a program sponsored by H.O.G. to support women motorcycle enthusiasts . . . both drivers and passengers, and was established in 1986 to encourage women to become more active in H.O.G. and their local chapters. The Atlanta Chapter is going beyond that and encouraging those women who may not or cannot join in their significant other's riding passion, but would like to be involved in the activities and events on four wheels to join us.
You want to know about what we do specifically. We eat, we socialize, we ride, we attend monthly meetings, and we eat. We have special events and yeah, we eat. Here in the Atlanta Chapter we keep on riding, having fun and eating.

S.H.A.R.E. House Thanks You!
I want to thank everyone who came out and donated toys and/or participated in the S.H.A.R.E. House Toy Ride. I want to thank Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for their support with this event. Without all of you, your love and generosity, we would never have been able to donate the amount of toys that we did and more than $600 in cash. Thank you so very much. A special thanks to Lee Benton for donating more than $100 in McDonald's Gift Certificates. Thanks to Vern Eldred and Tom Sigerfoos for helping the day of the ride. You guys are the greatest. A HUGE SPECIAL THANKS to the Douglas County Police Department, they did and outstanding job of escorting us to our meeting site. We had a bike break down on the way, two officers and Vernon and Lee stopped to get him member back on the road. D.C.P.D., thanks again so much, for all your help and support.
Chili Cook Off and Bake Sale
I would like to thank everyone who came out to the L.O.H. 1st Annual Chili Cook Off and Bake Sale. Thanks to all contestants and thanks to all who brought items for the bake sale. A BIG thank you to everyone who attended. Without you, this would not have been the success it was.
The Chili Cook Off was a huge success! We made in excess of $600 toward the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. Club House. Outstanding! This would not have happened without everyone who helped me with this event. Contestants: Paul Gardner, Pat Dunbar, Sheila, Fred Toney, Andy Hadley, Dale, Rita McClain, and Lee Benton. Thanks to B.K. Ellis and Rene Durham who brought chili for the tasting, but did not officially enter it in the contest. Since we actually did run out of chili, I am grateful to both of them for bringing in their chili to help us. A thank you goes out to Shyra Houghton for helping me at the table. I sure am glad you were there Shyra, and to Michelle Smith for helping sell 50/50 tickets. She made it hard to say no. Judges: David Olszewski acted as Head Judge (no one even tried to bribe him), Vernon Wright, Chris Houghton, Tom Sigerfoos, and Terri Felton, a brand-new member who just joined the chapter earlier in the week. Thanks so much guys, ya'll do an outstanding job. A special thanks goes out to Rhonda Cantrell and Terry who helped with all the little things involved in setting up. I appreciate your help more than you know. I am looking forward to a bigger and better Chili Cook Off next year.
Let me know how I am doing!
Catch ya later, see ya.
Patty Toney Ladies of Harley Officer, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Now that winter (?) is finally here and the chances to ride are not that often, use this time to check and maintain your motorcycle.
If you do go riding, REMEMBER:
TIRES: Good tread and proper inflation, will help you stay on the road.
BRAKES: Good brake pads/rotors, good lines, proper fluid levels will help you stop.
LIGHTS: Functional lights and signals will help you see and be seen.
WEATHER: Watch and be prepared for quick changes.
Take care of yourself and your bike.
See you soon!
Lee BentonSafety Officer,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Hello "Bikers" and "Bikerettes"
GOD BLESS!
Until next month, be careful and ride safe.

Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. HISTORY
Four years ago this month, January, 1998
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.'s Annual New Year's Day Ride in memory of Tommy Tyner was off to Buckner's Restaurant south of Jackson on I-75, rain or shine. For "all you can eat" of some of the best home-cooking you have ever tasted. We were concerned about name tags so in a survey the following was asked? What are your thoughts about name tags, chrome or plastic? How many times have you been at one of our events and someone comes up and calls you by name but you cannot remember what that person's name. It was chrome!
Editors' note . . . here was an idea that was brought up in the newsletter. Looking for a good New Year's Resolution for 1998? What about if you resolve to attend at least one ride per season with the Chapter!

Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL: http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give us you name, city and email address. That way other members will recognize your name and be able to email you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. You will also be able to check out other Harley related clubs around the world. If you have problems, email me and I will try and help.
Gary Langmaid will keep the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date. Michele Smith is now in charge of the Hot Line. If you have concerns about the status of a ride, PLEASE, call 770-908-3435.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page, www.atlantahog.comor the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.
