Ride Suggestion!
If you have an idea for a ride, please call or e-mail Steve Johnson and talk it over with him. We are interested in your thoughts for rides and would be most appreciative of any suggestion you have.
The weather has cooled off some and with almost no rain, we have had a great October for motorcycle riding. We have had a full calendar of rides from the mountains of North Georgia to Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest. October also ended our Sonic Socials for this year, because it is getting too cold to eat outside. I have enjoyed the rides and appreciate the great job out Ride Leaders have done. The year is not over and we still have several rides on the calendar. Please join us on a ride of your choice and if it is too cold, you can always "trailer," right Vern.
I know this will be welcomed news to some members but I think it was a great way of letting members know of scheduled events in a timely manner. We had to quit using Calling Post. They said they were not getting enough advertisements and they were going to have to start charging five cents per call. With about 850 members on the Calling Post list, this was too expensive for our budget.
I guess you are wondering why we have not said anything about electing next years Officers. Chris wants to appoint the Officers for next year. He has some extra duties in mind and is willing to offer some incentives for those willing to serve. If you are interested in serving, please contact Chris as soon as possible.
We have the tickets ready to start selling to raise fund for the Atlanta Chapter Club House. We have a 2002 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy ready for someone to ride off. We have a few details to work out still, but hope to start the raffle by next month. Start telling your friends and get their interest. We have 350 tickets to sell at $100 each, not bad odds. We will have the drawing just as soon as we sell all the tickets. We are planning a big party at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta for the "Reverse Drawing". Good Luck!
We had a good Metro Atlanta Georgia State H.O.G. Rally. The attendance was off from past rallies. I guess most of us are just to use to riding the metro freeways. We had the biggest participation in vendors at the rally that we have had in a long time. Most of them had just left Myrtle Beach Rally and on their way to Daytona and stopped off to make a few bucks off us. Thanks to the Rally Committee for a great job.
Congratulations to David Devlin for winning the People's Choice Bike Show with his 1982 Harley-Davidson Sturgis and John Christiansen for winning Second Place in the Slow Race. With the point from these two events and the points from the number of Atlanta Chapter Members signing in, the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. won Second Place in the Chapter Challenge. Congratulations Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Make sure you get your crock pot out and warmed up for the L.O.H's. Chili Cook Off and Bake Sale in November to raise money for the Club House.
SHARE House...It is time to start collecting toys for our Annual Toy Ride. We have changed charities this year to SHARE House which in Douglas County. We have put boxes at HDA to hold the toys. We will have more information about SHARE House in next months Newsletter or you can go to our web page and click on SHAREHouse for full details. Lets fill up the boxes this year for the children of homeless and battered women of Douglas County.
Remember, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. dues are going up to $20 January 1, 2002. If you have not renewed your membership by the mailing of January HOGWASH, you will be deleted form the mailing list.
Please call or email me about any concerns you have about the Atlanta Chapter. All input is welcomed, good or bad. I would like to hear from you!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S THOUGHTS
Hey there, you all! It's cooled off and it's time again for some of that great fall riding! I'll be breaking out my heavy leathers again. Hope to see you all at some time on your bikes for rides and events.
QUESTION: WHAT IS NATIONAL H.O.G. AND THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, H.O.G.'s PRIMARY OBJECTIVE?
ANSWER: RIDE AND HAVE FUN!
QUESTION: WHAT IS A CLUB?
ANSWER: A SOCIETY OF PEOPLE WHO ORGANIZE TO PROVIDE THEMSELVES WITH SPORT OR ENTERTAINMENT.
To these questions you have to ask yourselves; am I doing what it takes to achieve the satisfaction I require to be a good member?
When the call goes out for folks to volunteer their assistance to some project; I know that you may not believe you have any skill that would be useful. But, everyone has something to offer. If, nothing more than moral support to your fellow club members.
QUESTION: WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER?
ANSWER: A PERSON WHO OFFERS TO DO SOMETHING.
Try volunteering sometime! You will derive a better understanding of your fellow members and their desires as to what their needs are. Suggestions need to be put forth and acted upon if they are to be implemented. Silence is not always golden!
Ride Free!
Ride like an adult - assume the responsibility!
Crank'em up and move'm out! Ride safe!
Dick CadouAssistant Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
RENEWAL TIME
It's that time again, RENEWAL TIME! In the next two months we will be taking 2002 renewals and new members. If you renew before December 31, 2001 your DUES will be $15.00. If you wait until after the first of the year dues will be $20.00. That's right we are going up on our Membership Dues. So don't delay, you have 2 months. If you have not renewed your membership by the mailing of the January 2002 HOGWASH, you WILL NOT receive the Newsletter. We included a Membership Application in the October HOGWASH, so hold on to it. It will not be mailed again. You can also find one on the Web at www.atlantahog.com or come by Harley-Davidson of Atlanta and fill one out on the spot.
Everyone be safe.
Rene' DurhamSecretary/Treasurer, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.

Patty Toney Ladies of Harley Officer, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Hello Atlanta H.O.G. Well, it looks like Fall is finally here. I'm enjoying the nice cool weather and being able to wear my leathers without sweating like a HOG, or is it pig. Since the cool weather is upon us, there are a couple of things to be aware of while out riding. First, remember that wet leaves are as slippery as ice. Be careful, especially in the mountains riding on those twisty roads because riding over a patch of wet leaves can cause you to lose control of your bike. Second, always be on the lookout for deer. They are very active this time of year, especially during dusk and dawn. You never no when Bambi might bolt across the road in front of you.
Last, and not always obvious, be sure to bring along the proper clothing to keep warm. The temperature can drop very quickly when the sun starts to set and the temperature is already 10 degrees cooler when you are riding. Ultimately, hypothermia could set in, but before that happens, your reflexes and ability to think clearly can deteriorate, dramatically affecting your ability to handle the motorcycle safely.
If you ride safely, you'll ride longer!

Hello "Bikers" and "Bikerettes"

Blessing of the Bikes
September 23, 2001 Dallas, Georgia
The Fourth Degree Color Guard came out of the Church doors dressed in their tuxedos with jet black capes, lined with red satin, their chapeaus trimmed with white ostrich plume and white gloves clutching a silver etched sword and creating a path for Fr. Adrian Pleus. A member of the Church Choir sang Amazing Grace. The Blessing of the Bikes began. Fr. Adrian walked among the bikes sprinkling Holy Water at the bikers. A closing song, "America" was sung by the choir.
Mike Volk was inching his way up to the microphone to give the pre-ride instructions, when the Music Director blurts out "gentleman start your engines!", "I always wanted to say that" I look at Mike, he at me, we hear the engines starting behind us, we shrug our shoulders and race to our bikes, (They may leave us behind). The "Thundering Roar" of 71 bikes carrying 103 bikers rode out of the church parking lot, following a Paulding County Sheriff's Patrol car.
Mike and Karen Volk lead the way followed by two bikes carrying two large flags and we are off parade style, side by side, to the intersection of the city of Dallas, where traffic was stopped by the Dallas Police, as we rode all the cars coming from the opposite direction including a Fire Truck had pulled over to the side of the road.
I would like to thank all the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. members and their guest who came out to enjoy this event and hope they also enjoyed the great food, didn't it smell really good outside when we were waiting to get in the social hall?
I also want to thank; Mike Volk, Vernon Eldred and Lee Burton, who did the pre ride in both directions and Lee who did a pre ride that morning to check road conditions and Steve Johnson, David Olszewski and David Gilmer.
A big thanks to Shyra, Chris, and Eddie Houghton for the door prizes of 12 tee shirts, two coffee mugs, candle and angel pin. Thanks to Luke Thompson Jr. of Blimpie, with stores in Newnan, GA of five, $5.00 gift certificates, Knights of Columbus for five, $10.00 gift certificates to Home Depot and Wal-Mart and Chuck Pack for two tickets to a Braves Game.
Hank Somma Ride Leader, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
FIELDSTONE INN RIDE
We had a small turn out for the Fieldstone Inn ride to Hiawassee, and most likely this was due to the fact that lots of folks perhaps did the Talladega Ride the day before. This is good as it indicates we are covering lots of different types of rides with a wide appeal for our members.
We had a scenic trip up GA 136 over to Dahlonega and then it was even better as we headed up US 129. All in all we had around 10 folks on 8 bikes and we had two folks new to our group which were my neighbors, Terry and Susan. Susan is new to riding period and she handled her Low Rider really well; I think she rides much better than someone with 1600 miles experience. She enjoyed the curves and feels that she is really getting the hang of it. Tommye and my sister, who was visiting from Texas, met us up there, taking the car and stopping at all the quilt shops along the way.
Going home on US 76W was a bit windy, and we stuck to this and I-575 to get home, riding a little slower than usual. Overall the ride took a little longer than I thought it would so I am glad we did not try to repeat the curves going back. A few of us stopped just outside Hiawassee at an antique place on the way back and I was able to make a deal on a brass cash register I had been looking for. I think it is a 1912 model or there about We had a fun day and I know about 30 minutes after getting home, I was really getting tired from an almost 300 mile day. Those who were not local to Marietta did well over 300 and I imagine all who rode slept well that night!
Excerpts from Yahoo
Trailering Education Course
We've all heard about the Riders Education Courses being sponsored by various dealerships. Most would agree they are a real benefit to new riders. Now there's talk of creating a "Trailering Education Course" for those that enjoy trailering. I heard a lot about it this weekend in Daytona. It sounded real interesting. I was wondering if a correspondence course would be offered in addition to classroom training. I heard that the first course would cover only single bike trailers, but an advanced course would be offered for multi-bike trailers. Anyone interested in the course should speak with an officer or ride captain.
The Trailer Education Course's creator and his inspiration for the idea shall remain nameless. Right, Bill?
Biketoberfest 2001
Wanted to publicly give a big thank you to B.K. for leading the group down to Daytona (not to mention playing tour guide in Daytona). The pit stops going down and coming back were planned like clockwork. It was good to meet some members that I had not met before and get to know some others a little better. There are some very colorful people in the club and they sure make such events fun.

Georgia State H.O.G. Rally, 2001
I know this is a Club for Atlanta H.O.G. members, so I want to say a special thanks to all of the Atlanta Members that worked on and contributed to the rally this past weekend. It was one of the best ever. Hopefully this one will start to bring back people to our state functions. All the people from all the chapters and all the Dealers did themselves proud. Everyone I spoke to had a great time.
