Secretary's Report
It's that time again. Everyone get ready for our last party of 2000. This year we will be having our Christmas Party at the Georgia International Horse Park in the Carriage Room. We will be selling tickets. I know that we have never done this in the past as we have been very fortunate that we had enough funds to cover this at the end of the year, but with the cost of everything going up, we have to charge this year.
But I'm sure everyone will have a great time. We will have a buffet dinner and a cash bar. I have the tickets for sale at the shop. The price is $20.00 per person regardless of age. We have rooms blocked at the Hawthorn Suites Golf Resort for $79, $89, and $99. Please call (770) 761-9155 and tell them you are with Atlanta Chapter H.O.G.
Deadline will be December 1, 2000. There will also be a shuttle bus provided for those who need it. Dress is casual to semiformal and please bring a gag gift we are going to try something different this year. Don't be left out. Get your tickets early as seating is limited.
As everyone knows, we were to have Officer elections at our November meeting. Well, we had no one running against anyone so here are our new officers:
Director: B.K. Ellis Asst. Director: Dick Cadou Secretary/Treasurer: Rene' Durham Ride Director: Steve Johnson L.O.H. Director: Patty Toney

Please Ride Responsibly,
Steve JohnsonRide Director,Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.
Well, I can't believe it, but 2000 (the year we all awaited for so long) is coming to a close. What a great year it was for Tom and I. We had so much fun planning Chapter rides and working some of the different events. We met a lot of wonderful new members and got to know many of the active members better as well. I am so excited about the new Chapter Officers for next year. I am sure you will give them all the encouragement and support that you showed all of us this year.
I am very proud that Patty Toney will be the Ladies Of Harley Officer next year. Patty is rather new to the Harley family and just recently purchased her own Dyna Wide Glide. So, she will be gathering riding experience as well as taking one the responsibility of a Chapter Officer. It will be quite an eventful year for her indeed and she is ever ready to jump in and do what is needed to get the job done. Next time you see her at the shop, please introduce yourself and give her a big HOG welcome!
I would like to give a great big thanks to all of you who help make last year a fun, safe and successful year. All of our chapter rides and events take a lot of behind the scenes planning and help from volunteers. You all know who you are and I thank you for all your support and efforts. If you have never been involved in a chapter event, but would like to volunteer, please contact one of your officers and ask what you can do. Remember that all business meetings are open to all members. Anytime you would like to sit in or have an idea to present to the chapter, go to one of these meetings. It is your chapter, and the officers rely on feedback from the members to run it the way you want it to be.
I hope to see each of you at the Chapter Christmas Party. It is going to be quite an event this year, so mark your calendar, put on your Sunday best and come on out.
Have a safe and happy Holiday Season!
Let's ride and have FUN!!

Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. has a "Club Address" on Yahoo at the following URL: http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/atlantachapterhog
Please, check it out! You will be able to chat with other Atlanta Chapter Members. You will have to register to sign on to chat, load pictures and post messages. When you register, please give us you name, city and email address. That way other members will recognize your name and be able to email you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter and not someone in Kalamazoo. You will also be able to check out other Harley related clubs around the world. If you have problems, email me and I will try and help.
Jim Keely keeps the calendar up to date, so there is no need to miss an important event date.
This does not replace our HOGWASH Web Page, www.atlantahog.com or the HOGWASH Newsletter, just another e-service of the Atlanta Chapter.

Tommy Tyner Memorial Ride
This will be first ride for the Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. for year 2001 and is starting off nontraditional. As in years past, we have ridden to Buckners for lunch. Well, this year New Years Day falls on a Monday and Buckners is always closed on Monday. They said it did not matter that it was New Years Day, "they were closed". So, we had to start looking for another place that would accommodate anywhere from 50 to 150 people depending on the weather that day. The best thing that we could come up with is the Western Sizzler in Griffin., I know it is not Buckners, but at least it will be all the food you care to eat. I know Lee will be glad of that. We will meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta at 10:00 AM and leave at 10:30 AM. We will do a back road ride, so we will not be stopping to pick up the south side riders at the BP station in Forest Park as in years past. If you do not want to ride to Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, just meet us in Griffin. We should be there between 11:30 and noon.
Hope to see everyone there kicking off the New Year with a great turnout. If the weather is bad, come in the vehicle of your choice.

LaPRADE'S A BIG Hit (as usual)
Our "fall edition" ride to LaPrade's was a wonderful outing and saw participation from 34 folks on 27 bikes. I think of the past four rides I've led up there, this one had the best weather so far and we saw some really nice fall colors to boot. Apparently, the northern part of the state has not been hit quite so badly by the drought and I think lots of "leaf lookers" will get somewhat of a bonus this fall. One bit of orange color we saw that was a total surprise was when Jerry Carpenter pulled up at the restaurant on his restored 1950 orange and black FLT with flat head engine. As some may know, Jerry and his wife Dot are now residents of Cleveland, GA.
We took our usual route up GA 400 past Dahlonega to Clarkesville where we picked up GA 197 and began the more scenic part of the trip to Lake Burton, passing several spots where the Soque River either paralleled or crossed the roadway. The best part is probably where the "Mark of the Potter" craft shop is located, featuring its scenic waterfalls. It seems though, with the popularity of our ride, we always have too many bikes to make a stop there (small parking area), but if you are ever by there in smaller groups, by all means stop in ---- the ladies will enjoy the pottery and the guys will like seeing the old grist mill below the shop, plus it seems everyone loves to feed the trout from the deck out on the back of the shop (they are mammoth in size!!). By the way, its OK if the guys enjoy the pottery too, but I must confess I have never seen a guy in there without a pained expression on his face once his wife or girlfriend began "eyeing" the pottery.
We did not go through Helen as we usually do on our return trip, figuring we were planning to go there the following Saturday plus the Octobefest traffic would have taken forever. Instead, we went west on US 76 all the way to Blue Ridge and came down GA 515 to I-575; one thing that made this ride different from the others is that almost everyone rode the whole distance as a group...its really cool seeing all those headlights in the background as you cruise down the highway!!
This was one of those rides that I think left everybody with that spiritually refreshed feeling and that all was right with the world. Spending the entire day on one's Harley in the weather we had in North Georgia was nothing less than euphoric.
Helen Ride A Visual Treat
Our ride to Helen, Ga on Saturday, October 21 was a real treat for the eyes as the fall colors of North Georgia really outdid themselves!!! Nineteen folks aboard 13 bikes, including one with a sidecar, left Perimeter Mall right on schedule at about 10:40. For some reason this time, I had planned to get off of GA 400 before it dead ended in Dahlonega and I have to tell you it was a brilliant stroke of luck to have done so. Just as we got to Exit 16 to get over to GA Hwy 9 going into Dawsonville, the traffic going north was dead stopped. We weren't sure if it was just heavy volumes headed into N. Georgia for various festivities, or one Or more accidents but it could not have worked out better ---- we had no traffic whatsoever until about 1/2 mile north of Helen. Our route took us up GA 9 thru Dawsonville and into Dahlonega where we continued north on US 129/GA 9 and then at the intersection for the "R" Ranch, we continued right on US 129 to Turner's Comer, and then went south on US 129/GA I I towards Cleveland and took GA 75 Alt into Helen. It has been a while since I went this particular route, and we were well rewarded with a fun ride with gentle curves all nestled amongst the hardwoods which provided a visual "smorgasbord' of colors--red, orange, yellow, green--you name it, it was there.
I think most of the group ate at Hans' (run by a former biker, now deceased) and a couple of hours later, about 5 to 6 bikes headed home. We returned exactly as we had come and it was a great ride except for the fact it took about an hour and a half to get thru Dahlonega. This was absolutely a mess. At one point we had to pull into the parking lot at Eckerd's and let the bikes cool down while we all got something to drink. I have seen traffic from Atlanta stadium move better than this!!! The State Patrol had the square in Dahlonega blocked off and everyone had to go the by pass. A little research on the net showed this was the final weekend of Gold Rush Days in Dahlonega, the Apple Fest in Ellijay, and it may have been the final weekend in Helen for Octoberfest (oddly, Helen was no more crowded than usual). Hopefully, our ride to Hiawassee next week end will not see us have to contend with this mess in Dahlonega, because our desired route will take us thru going both directions.
Continuing on down GA 400, our final treat of the day was a fantastic sunset and the viewing of a couple of hot air balloons making their way south. Other than the traffic on our return trip thru. Dahlonega, nothing could have made the day better. The sights, the weather and the folks on the ride were all just great.
Hiawassee Ride
The Chapter Ride to Hiawassee completed what could be called our "fall trifecta" as we have now done three rides in three weeks to North Georgia. This ride was exceptional as were the other two, offering up lots of fall colors and a route that provided lots of curves.
Our ride saw 27 folks on 21 bikes take part and we left out of Kennesaw and headed up I-575 until we got to Ga 136. For me, this was a new road and it was a pleasant surprise offering tremendous views and lots of beautiful colors. We went just north of Dawsonville and onto Dahlonega, where we took GA 60 to Suches, home of the Two Wheels Only Hotel. They had quite a crowd there, consisting mostly of sport bikes which were out in droves this particular weekend...they were everywhere, as if they had been forbidden for a while and were now making up for lost time. Actually I think that flavor of riders had allowed the "leaf watchers" and "festival goers" to clear out of north Georgia over the two preceeding week ends and stayed home. Anyway, from Suches we headed across the infamous GA 180 and Wolf Pen Gap area eventually hitting GA 17/75 north of Helen and heading onto Hiawassee.
Lunch at the Fieldstone Inn was nice and tables for 30 were waiting when we got there. They really seemed appreciative of our having paid them a visit. While we had several of the employess asked about our bikes and the club and we found out that John the owner of the Fieldstone is also a rider and had a copper Fat Boy sitting in the parking lot; after all of us had a good lunch, it was time to gas up and head back. Due to the fact we lost an hour of sunlight with the time change, most of us opted to return via US 76 and on down Ga 515/I-575.
It was a great ride and lots of fun for all.
