Fall Riding Safety Tip
Having just recently returned from Sturgis and other points in the western US, I was astounded by its beauty and it occurred to me that if I can't ride there then I think that if I can't ride there then I think north Georgia is the next best thing. In several ways north Georgia has a beauty all its own and one of the things that contributes to that is the abundance of hardwood trees providing lush greenery in the summer months and gorgeous colors in the fall.
For many, fall is the preferred time to ride as it is usually cooler and offers a break from the oppressive heat of summer. But this is also one of the most treacherous times to ride in north Georgia. All of those gorgeous leaves sooner or later wind up on the road surface, usually thicker to the sides of the road and often times matted down from rain; this means a riding surface that offers absolutely no traction should your tires wind up on them. Combine that with the fact that when you are cornering as you do almost constantly in that area, your contact surface with the road is reduced and you have the perfect recipe for disaster, for you and your bike.
So remember to look ahead through those curves and keep in mind these little devils are out there to test your skill.
Slow down too when those conditions are present and allow a little more time to complete the trip. Another reason to slow down is that very likely around one or more of those curves is a "cager" who is poking along or worse has stopped, to see the leaves.
As David says: "Ride safely and you will ride longer''.

MDA Poker Run
The L.O.H. sponsored poker run, held July 29th was a great success and a lot of fun. After final contributions were counted we ended up raising just under $1,000.00!!!
We had about 25 bikes and 30 plus people show for an early start to a nice day. The route took riders just over 100 scenic , miles ending at the Taco Mac on Dallas Hwy (120) where we were greeted with super-friendly service and good food. Thanks to Taco Mac's manager, Shelley and staff for helping us feel so welcomed.
Our grand prize winner was Craig Morrison, who after trading a few cards, came in with a Full House! The stars were smiling on Craig that day as he also won the 50/50 drawing. Second place went to Marcie Cadou who held a Flush! The worst hand prize went to our Chapter Director, Dan Gardiner who won a 15th Anniversary T-shirt.
Much appreciation goes out to Dan and Ginger Gardiner who "manned" the first stop, Steve Johnson, took care of the second stop all by himself and Jimmy Lewis and Patty Toney did a great job at third. Heart felt thanks to Jim and Rene Durham for helping us at the sign-in tables and for answering endless questions during the planning of the event. Good to see Jim doing so well! A very special thanks to our good riding buds, Tim and Katie Lawrence, for running sweep and for taking the time to do a practice run of the route for us to make sure no-one got lost, as well as all the tons of (poker run) advise. A big hug and thank you to my pal, Phyllis Sands (and Joe too) for being there to do whatever was needed at any given time. You are the best! Dick and Marcie Cadou....could not have done it without cha! We would still be trying to figure out who had the best hand if not for Dick and to Mike Volk for the maps, suggestions and just being there! Mike was involved with the "Battle of the Bikes" (March of Dimes) at Stone Mountain H-D and still took the time to come by to help out.
All in all it was a fun, safe event and the best thing is, we raised a good bit of money for our Chapter's number one charity. I hope everyone had as much fun as Tom and I did. Thanks for all the support!
Let's ride and have FUN!!

March of Dimes RideSaving Babies, together October 7th & 8th, 2000
In years past, Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. was always number one in money raised for this function. Last year we came in number eight. Let try to at least be in the top five this year. It is a two day event at the Coca-Cola Lakewood Exhibition Center on October 7th and 8th. You can pick up your envelope at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta. If you have participated in the past, I am sure you have received one in the mail. Make sure that you code the box "Club Code" 101. It says for official use only, but please go a head and make it with 101, our Chapter Code.

LaPrades RideOctober 15, 2000
On Sunday, October 15th, we will have our "fall edition" of what is becoming a traditional ride for our chapter to LaPrade's. Among other items on their menu, Sunday is fried chicken day at Laprade's. I have asked that we be seated at the 1:30, sitting so we will be leaving a little later than normal.
Our ride route will be our standard, featuring GA Hwy 197 out of Clarkesville, which features streams and lots of curves. The route follows the Soque river in north Georgia and this is always a fun ride.
Meeting Time: 10:OO AM Meeting Place: J.C. Penney Verimeter Mall, Ashford Dunwoody Road, I-285, exit 29 Departure: 10:30 AM sharp Ride Leader: Tom Sigerfoos, 770 971-4467 dynabear@aol.com
Helen, GAOctober 21, 2000
On Saturday, October 21st, there will be a Chapter Ride to Helen, GA for lunch in the town where the Chattahoochee originates. Oktoberfest will also be going full swing so there will also be a Bavarian atmosphere to enjoy complete with polka music. Our route will take us through Dahlonega and then through the north Georgia mountains to get there. Again, like most rides through north Georgia, this ride will provide some good curve practice, so come prepared for that and be mentally ready to ride.
Meeting Time: 10:00 AM Meeting Place: JC Penny, Perimeter Mall, Ashford Dunwoody Road, I-285(exit 29) Departure: 10:30 AM Ride Leader: Tom Sigerfoos 770 971-4467 dynabear@aol.com
Fieldstone Ride, Hiawasse, GAOctober 21, 2000
Join us for our third ride in three weeks to scenic north Georgia as we travel to the Fieldstone Inn in Hiawassee for a buffet lunch which features some of the best Belgian waffles I have ever eaten; this is a real spread and if eating is your thing, you won't be disappointed!! The Inn is located on the shores of Lake Hiawassee and is a nice setting for lunch.
Our route for the ride will take us through some of the best curves north Georgia has to offer, including the Wolf Pen Gap area on GA Hwy 180. This will definitely test your riding skills, so be mentally prepared, and physically rested. I do not recommend this ride for new comers or inexperienced riders...it would be better to "cut your teeth" so to speak on another ride.
For a preview of the Fieldstone Inn, look at their web site at http://www.fieldstoneinn.com.
Meeting Time: 10:OO AM Meeting Place: Cracker Barrel, Chastain Road, I-75 N, exit 271 Departure: 10:30 AM Ride Leader: Tom Sigerfoos 770 971-4467 dynabear@aol.com
Two Brother's Barbecue Ride
Our ride to the Two Brothers Barbecue in Ball Ground was fun and delicious although a little on the wet side.
Thirteen folks on ten bikes (and one car) showed up for the ride which began under broken but mostly sunny skies. I really thought we had lucked out as things looked good to the north and we did until we came out of Cartersville, at which point it began to drizzle just a bit. Within three miles we were looking for a place to stop and put on the rain suits, which is when I almost went down. What they say about the first few minutes rain after a drought is absolutely correct; I may have braked just a bit too hard, as a road leading to a church parking lot popped up and I was concerned that our riders (those who brought rain gear) not get any wetter than they had to. Anyway, I did a little "S" maneuver and came to a good stop after passing the road, so I went back and joined the group to get outfitted for the wet weather gear which was off and on the rest of the day. Just as everyone who might not have brought rain gear was about to dry out, we would come upon another cloud burst and get wet all over again. I also learned a lesson about using the hood to my suit as I kept getting runoff from my helmet down my collar...by the time we got to Two Brothers, my shirt was damp halfway down my back.
Two Brothers was really good and several folks enjoyed ribs or pork plates. It was cozy inside and it felt welcomed after the showers had cooled things down...I imagine those who were wet were pretty cold, although I did not see hot coffee being ordered. Following a good feast, we headed home, having officially ended the ride at the restaurant. Most of us headed down I-575, but a few did go west back towards Cartersville. I am thankful for a fun and safe ride, with nothing more eventful than a pucker mark in the seat of my pants! Actually, I guess we can all be thankful for this sorely needed rain over the last few days...it has sure helped lawns and plants to recover. Looks like next weekend at my house will likely be spent "riding" an aerator/spreader!!
