By the time you receive this newsletter, several of us will be headed to the rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. I hope that everyone that wanted to make the trip was lucky enough to secure accommodations. For those of you not able to take the time to do a 2-week plus trip, we have a Chapter ride going to the Little Sturgis Rally in Mississippi on August 25th-27th. Sounds like it will be a great rally also. It is only a few hundred miles away from home.

The Atlanta Chapter 15th Anniversary T-shirts are in. They are presently in Black and White. Thanks to Jim Durham we have a specially designed logo and artwork. It really looks great.

This is just a reminder; you have a few months left to participate in the Chapter Meeting and the Ride Attendance Contests. The prizes will be given away at the November Meeting.

ELECTIONS OF CHAPTER OFFICERS - I am mentioning this at this time so each member can be thinking about a person that they would like to nominate for an officer's position. After the September meeting we will start taking nominations and the elections will be held at the October meeting. When nominating someone try to make contact with them to be sure they are willing to fulfill the duties. This is a great opportunity for any of our members to participate in the chapter as an officer and lend new ideas on new activities and growth of the chapter. If you would like to personally run for an office you can nominate yourself.

We still have lots of rides on the calendar for the rest of the year. This includes some new member rides put on by Assistant Director Tom Sigerfoos. These are to familiarize the new members on the safety aspects of riding in-groups for chapter functions. Hope to see you at the chapter meetings and rides.

I will lead the Chapter Ride to the State Rally on Thursday, September 21st and return on Sunday, September 24th. We will meet at Harley Davidson of Atlanta at 10 AM on Thursday and take a scenic back road route to Columbus. We will stop for a lunch break on the way. The ride will be going to the Hilton Hotel. If you are staying at another location be sure you have the directions. Any questions on the ride you can contact me by phone or email.

Pre-registration must be postmarked by August 3rd, 2000. If you have any questions talk with Rene'.

Ride Safe and Have Fun,

Charlie Joseph Ride!

We had 24 folks on 18 bikes turn out for the ride down to LaGrange for lunch at Charlie Joseph's. We got off to a good start under hot, sunny skies and all went fairly well until the junction of 166 and 92 where the left turn snuck up on me and three bikes right behind me went straight and had to turn around. Once we got into LaGrange I missed the turn onto Bull Street and we had bikes circling the square for a moment or two but we all found our way, eventually. I have to give myself no more than about a "D" on this one as far as ride leading is concerned (read on).

Charlie Joseph's was real quaint and had pretty good food. Everyone had burgers or dogs and I think B.K. opted for the ham and cheese. It's a small place; an entry on each side of the building provides access to the large U-shaped bar which is closed on the inside (and takes up all the inside!). There are stools around the bar with 2 man booths (which is a stretch) along each wall, and it is cozy to say the least. There are also two "walk up" windows on the front. The place dates back to the 1920's and there are lots of old signs inside for things most 30 years old would have to ask what they are, like Nehi Grape, for instance. It was also like a homecoming for me, as my first with what is now BellSouth was in was really interesting to see how the place has changed in 29 years; in some ways quite a bit, but not so much in others. There is a scenic fountain now in the middle of the square and of course the trees along the streets are larger.

We left Charlie Joseph's, gassed up and then stopped 30 minutes later in nearby Newnan for yes, that's right, ice cream (and lots of ice water). B.K. saw that Tommye was pretty warm and helped out by placing a few "cubes" down the back of her shirt, causing some unusual squealing in the parking lot. Leaving Newnan, the highway continued to get the best of me as I never saw the sign for GA Hwy 70 and we wound up going all the way into Peachtree City; I eventually got us back to the shop from there without further incidents. All in all. I think everyone had a good time, even if we did a bit like Moses and his people wandering in the desert.

For those who missed this, it is in the Ride Book --- check it out.

Ride Book

Ever meet a couple of friends at the shop on an impromptu basis or even at a planned place and then can't quite figure out where you might like to ride?

Well, now we have something available that might help you. Its called the "Ride Book" and it will be kept in the main office at H-D Atlanta. It is a three ring white binder that has individual plastic pockets for each ride's directions and maps. Please do not take this material from the office --- the idea is to find a ride and then make a copy of the map and directions, returning the original to its place in the book. This way everyone will have access to the resource. Each Ride Captain has been asked to update the book when he or she plans a ride, so hopefully the book will continue to grow. So enjoy and thanks for your cooperation in using the book.

Look for the sign in table at the rally to see where you will be assigned to work. Please let me or Tom Sigerfoos know if you will volunteer so we can turn in the list. Also don't forget to sign in at the registration table for our chapter attendance.

Ride Director's Report

Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying this fine summer weather as much as I am. You know none of us like to ride in the rain, but we sure could use a couple of good ole rainy days...Soon! I'm willing to give up a few riding days for that. If you are going to Sturgis, I hope you have made your reservations by now. Sharon and I are really looking forward to this trip...seeing old friends, making new ones, and getting to see all that beautiful scenery up there AND on the way there too. Which brings me to this...please take it is a "long trip" even if you break it into segments. We want everyone to come home in just as good a shape as you left for Sturgis (or anywhere else). Now, I know that I'm not the Safety Officer, but I want to say this anyway, IT MIGHT save someone a lot of problems. When you pass those big rigs, please don't cut back in front of them too quickly. They are extremely heavy, can't stop on a dime, have blind spots, and sometimes their tires come apart! Let's face it, the drivers are also human. Let's give them all the road they want. Let's all support our Ride Captains, they have two rides this month, a lunch ride, led by Jimmy Lewis, and a "Little Sturgis" ride, led by Dick Cadou. Sounds like fun to me!

Ride today like you want be able to ride tomorrow!

Please Ride Responsibly,

Steve Johnson
Ride Director,
Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G.

It's good to see Past Director Jim Durham out and about at our H.O.G. functions.

Our rides have remained safe and accident free this year. I commend each rider and co-rider who has ridden with us. We have had many new members on these rides and Y'all (southern slang for "You All') fit in just right. We are glad to have Y'all as a part of our Chapter. I would like to pass along a few safety tips/rules of the road. Some of you already know and follow these but as stated above, we have a lot of new riders. Check your motorcycle before every ride for tire condition and pressure, oil level, leaks, and overall general condition. When loading items into saddle bags or tour packs always place heaviest items close to the center and in the lowest location. Place heavier items in the bottom of the saddlebags and the lighter items in the tour packs. Never ride in some ones blind spot. This is true for a motorcycle group ride and also if you are in the middle of rush hour traffic with a thousand four wheelers. Always try to see and be sure you are seen. I hope these safety tips will be helpful for everyone. You and the manner in which you ride will help determine how long and what kind of rides you have.

We will soon be renting new Harley-Davidson Motorcycles!

We will soon be offering Riders Edge. Riders Edge is Harley-Davidson's Safety Course. This course is State of Georgia and M.S.F. certified. After successfully completing this course, you will then be able to obtain your motorcycle license without taking the Georgia Motorcycle License Test.

We will soon also become a Buell Motorcycle Dealer! We will always be a Harley-Davidson Dealer. For more information on these new services being offered at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta please contact David Gilmer at the dealership 770-944-1340.

We are also making some changes in the service, parts, and motor clothes departments in order to better serve you and to be more efficient for each of you. As always we appreciate your comments and patronage.

"Ride your Harley 'safely' and you will ride your Harley 'longer'".
