The Head HOG!
For those of you that have not heard, Jim Durham, our past director for 1999 and long time member of Atlanta Chapter, had a stroke on Sunday, April 30th and spent several days in Northside Hospital. He was transferred to the North Fulton Rehabilitation Center. Hopefully by the time you read this he will be home and recovering. Rene' reports that he has really improved each day. Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this time.
The Alabama State Rally was great! I wish the entire Chapter could have joined us. The Birmingham Chapter did a great job. A group of us on early Saturday morning took the tour of the Harley-Davidson Test facility at the Talladega Speedway. We actually got to go around the 2-1/2 mile track on our own bikes. We also that afternoon went into Birmingham to visit the Barber vintage Motorcycle Museum. If you are a motorcycle lover, like most people in our chapter, you could spend the whole day at this place.
Harley-Davidson of Atlanta is now sponsoring the SOUTHWIND Motorcycle Drag Racing Team. The team attended our last meeting and introduced themselves to our chapter and was available for questions. They are going to try to have their bike displayed and be present at our next meeting. Hopefully we can support the team by having a ride to the National Drags on July 22-23rd for the people that are not going on the chapter ride to Biloxi.
Be sure to check our calendar. There have been a few changes in dates and some new rides added, i.e., M.D.A. Poker Run was changed from July 9th to July 29th. M.D.A. is the one national charity we support. Please make every effort to support it. Tommye Sigerfoos, Ladies of Harley Officer, will publish details of the event. The LaPrade's Ride has been changed from Saturday to Sunday Oct. 8th due to request for Fried Chicken.
We have rides every weekend in June. Come out and join us. Please if you are planning in making any of the overnight trips be sure to book as soon as possible with our travel agent Alison Mull.

Braggin' Rights
I have written a couple of times on how we, your Officer Board would like to hear from you with regard to the rides and activities we put together for you, our members. Basically we are asking for a report card of sorts.
Just recently, Tommye, Rene, David Gilmer and myself had a chance to attend Primary Officer Training in Gulfport, MS. The objective of P.O.T. is for us to be made aware of a lot of ideas and requirements in running a successful H.O.G. Chapter and to share with fellow officers from other chapters about the things our chapter is doing and the challenges we face. As part of that session, we had the chance to look at a lot of chapter newsletters to see what the "other guy" was up to. Let me tell you that of all the ride schedules we were able to cast our eyes on, this chapter, THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, has a volume and variety of ride and activities that were "hands down" the envy of many, many chapters.
So, while we always look for improvements we can make and welcome your suggestions, I think we all left with sense that we are doing a lot to fill your desires for rides and activities-and this is a tradition we want to continue. We hope that we are putting together a program that will really pique your interest and get your "riding juices flowing". Again, we are here to serve you, our members. Thanks for the opportunity!

The Alabama State Rally was a lot of fun, especially getting to ride our motorcycles around the Talledega race track. Now that's something I don't get to do regularly and it was a real hoot for me. We got to spend time with old friends and even met a few new ones, the weather was right and the roads were inviting. We had fun and hope that you did too.
On another note, I want to extend my sympathy to Tom Sigerfoos on the loss of his dad.
We had a lunch ride on Saturday the 13th to the El Jalapena in Villa Rica, it was about a 60 mile ride with about 18 bikes and 20 riders, I heard of no complaints, it was a nice easy ride to enjoy the day.
We have several upcoming rides during the month of June, I'm not scheduled to lead any of them, so I won't laborate on them, I'll let the Ride Captains leading each ride do that themselves. Please come and join us if you can, there are good times to be had. We have had several new members to join us and they seem to be having fun and we need you to join in too. Let's enjoy these expensive motorcycles, that's what we got them for and now is the time. Please have them serviced as scheduled so, hopefully, you won't have mechanical problems that could spoil your ride.
Ride today like you want be able to ride tomorrow!
Please Ride Responsibly,
Steve Johnson

The Safety HOG!
What you can't see can hurt you!
Blind comers have claimed many a good motorcyclists. Never rely solely on road signs. If you have never been on a road or upcoming set of curves, you now become and are essence a rookie. We all know rookies should never push their limit to the max. We should never ride beyond our skills limit. Road signs do not warn of gravel in your lane in the middle of the curve. Road signs do not warn of off-camber curves or decreasing radius curves. While on a motorcycle, mountain twisties are the best thing since sliced bread but they can put you down before you know it. You will go down not for what you know and see but for what you don't know and can't see.
Rule of the month:
The "Up Rule"
Don't try to 'show up'
Don't try to 'pass up'
Don't try to 'keep up'
If you are riding over your limit or skill. level this can lead to a big 'screw up' Ride as if your life depends upon it, ride within your limits.
"Ride your Harley 'safely' and you will ride your Harley 'longer'"

LAPRADE'S RIDE RECAP
Our Saturday ride of April 22 to LaPrade's on Lake Burton saw 20 bikes and a total of 26 folks come out in "less than advertised" weather for a scenic ride and some delicious food. We met at Perimeter Center Mall under cloudy, cool (chilly?) and windy skies which did not improve as we headed north. As we rode to the end of GA 400 the temperature seemed to drop a good bit and as we rode into Dahlonega, a bank sign confirmed our suspicions and told us it was a blistering 47 degrees! We did catch a break however in Cleveland as I think we just missed the Easter Parade and when we approached our gas stop we noticed that we were about to get caught up in the Easter Egg Hunt held at Truett McConnell College right across the highway. Fortunately, there were two policemen directing traffic and we got out with only a few minutes delay. Nearing LaPrade's, the clouds finally and seemingly, defiantly gave way to mostly sunshine. We all welcomed the chance to bask in the sun outside while the restaurant made ready for our hungry group.
Most of the riders went the short way back to Helen of their own accord as many needed to get home before the day wore on much longer. We did have six bikes that went the long way which was north and then west across US 76 before heading south on the curvy 17/75 into Helen. Of s ecoa; interest this day was the fact that Joe and Phyllis Sands joined us for the return trip and Phyllis made her maiden voyage on her bi To this point, she admitted she had not been very far from home, doing a lot around the Red Top Mountain area, but for her first ride out she did tackled nearly 300 miles that day and took on some pretty hairy curves too, especially for her experience level!!!! She did absolutely great-so, congratulations Phyllis on your "Coming Out Ride"!
Finally, I would like to welcome some new riders we had on this one. Gary and Gay from the Peachtree City area, Charlie and Penny from Carrollton, and also Tim from Carrollton. Everyone rode very well-so well that our Safety Officer, David Gilmer said he could have slept through the ride. Again, our chapter has a really good safety record and we want to continue that, but it takes effort from everyone to do it, so thanks everyone for your contribution to this outstanding record!!
