DIRECTOR'S REPORT

The Head HOG!

Hope everyone that was able to go Daytona had a great time and safe trip. I understand the weather was great.

During out last business meeting we created a committee to start the search for a location for the chapter Christmas party. The committee currently consists of Dick and Marci Cadou, Sharon Johnson, Ginger Gardiner and Rene' Durham. We a starting early hopefully to avoid any problems in locating and securing a site in plenty of time. Many of the places are reserved a year in advance. The committee will be looking for the criteria of having catering, DJ or band, and a reasonable cash bar in a private setting for members and their guest only. If any member has any suggestions please address them to the committee or any of the officers. We want it to be centrally located if possible because we have members all over the metro area.

We have lots of rides this year I know you will enjoy. Our next overnight rides will be Charleston, Alabama State Rally, and Myrtle Beach Bike Week. A reminder on the Charleston trip, Steve Johnson and Chris Houghton will be leading a group leaving H-D of Atlanta on April 14th at 9 AM. I will also have a second group meeting in Conyers at 9:15 AM to join the main group as they pass. See the Charleston Ride announcement for more details. The Alabama Rally Ride will meet at H-D of Atlanta, Friday, May 5th (See the article).

Members must play by rules was an article in the Chapter Officers Newsletter from H.O.G. and it addressed the following: You must be a member in good standing with National H.O.G. to be a member of a local chapter. Membership for the local chapter year runs from January 1st to December 31st each year. Membership for H.O.G. run from the date that you join for whatever period selected.

H.O.G. National notifies us of expirations and we send you a follow up notification that you must renew. Due to insurance and liability we will begin requesting both cards when you sign-in at rides and activities. Contest and Door Prizes are for our current members only. So PLEASE check your national card and make sure you are current.

I hope to see you all on the upcoming Charleston and Alabama rides. Riding season is upon us, Riding season is upon us!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S REPORT

Get Your Kicks On Route 66 Thursday, May 11, 2000

WOW!!! Have we got a treat for you!!! Some of you may have seen or even own a copy of a video that Harley-Davidson in 1996 called "Ridin' Route 66". I found out about this video from a book on the history of Harley-Davidson and in my hunt to get a copy (a story in itself), ran across the group who came up with the idea for the video and pitched it to H-D in Milwaukee.

The result was a "documentary" video which came out in late 1996 or early 1997 and covered some 400 plus bikers on their trip from Milwaukee to Chicago and on to Los Angeles. The Melia Design Group, from right here in Atlanta, are the ones who sold H-D on the idea and put together this video from some 50 hours of filming done on that ride.

Melia Design Group (Mike, DJ, and Jenifer) will be at our May 11th meeting to share with us this great story and to do a photographic presentation of Route 66, "The Mother Road". A lot us can remember the days of the old drive-ins, and roadside motels when features like color TV and swimming pools were a really big deal. So along with our regular meal, we will be serving up a big slice of vintage Americana for dessert...please join us for this very special presentation! Try to bring a guest or perhaps an inactive member and let's get the "riding juices" flowing!!

The meeting will run longer than usual, so plan accordingly; you won't want to miss this!!!! Remember, we meet May 11th. a week earlier than usual due to Myrtle Beach Bike Week.

Ride Director's Report

Your Ride Director

I hope that everyone who went to Daytona had a good time! But now with that behind us, it's time to prepare for our annual trip to Charleston, SC. April 14th, 15th, and returning on April 16th.

There will be a group meeting at 8:30 AM at the shop and that group will leave at 9:00 AM. Chris Houghton and I will be leading. We will be joined by the Southside group in Conyers at the Salem Road, Exit #84, I-20 East, led by Dan Gardiner. As we go by, they will join in behind us.

By now everyone should have made their reservations...if not, please contact Alison Mull at 770-486-1346, Alison has all the information and will be glad to help. Don't forget to have your bike serviced in plenty of time before the ride to help ensure a trouble-free trip. This has always been a very enjoyable ride. Charleston is full of good things to do....it's a fun thang! I hope to see you there.

We had five Friday lunch rides scheduled in March for those who have to work on Saturdays and Sundays. They all leave the shop at 11:00 AM. As I write this article, we have had two of them. The first was on the 3rd, with three bikes and three riders, and we did some back-roads riding through Douglas county and just into Carroll County into Villa Rica where we ate at the El Jalapeno Mexican Restaurant...excellent Mexican food to top-off an great ride. The second was on the 10th...with only Sharon and I showing up. Both rides were a lot of fun. At this writing there are still three Friday Rides left .... and you are very welcome to join us.

April 22nd L.O.H. will have a ride going to LaPrades to eat lunch, if you've never been, you need to go on this one...it is a real treat! I will lead a group from the shop at 8:30 AM and join the North side group at 9:30 AM at Perimeter Mall, to be led by Tommye Sigerfoos. More information elsewhere in this newsletter concerning this ride.

"TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME"

7th ANNUAL MACON BRAVES RIDE

Join us for an L.O.H. sponsored evening of "old fashioned" baseball, where the fans are nearly right down on the field, as the Macon Braves take on the Charleston River Dogs the night of June 10th. We will be staying overnight at the Quality Inn in Macon, and having a good meal before the game, so possibly all you will need to "round out" your evening (or tummy) will be some cotton candy or ice cream at the game (food prizes are also given at the game based on how loud fans can get, so bring your best cheering voices!). This is a lot of fun and provides an element of closeness to the actual game you can't get at "The Ted" here in Atlanta, and you don't have to mortgage your home to get into the game, either!

The ride features a relaxing trip through several small towns with historic homes and provides for a fun, relaxed weekend. Hope you can join us for fun and baseball!

Alison Mull is working on the hotels and details will follow in the May HOGWASH. Admission to the ball game is around $5.00.

The raft trip is set for 9:00 AM on Saturday, the 24th.

Trip details:

• We have 30 spaces reserved for the raft trip.
• Cost of raft trip is $31.00 per person; money is due by May 23rd!

Sign up and pay at the shop. Make checks payable to Nantahala Outdoor Center. A river raft trip waiver must be signed. Rene' has these and you can sign this when you make your payment. For those who want to ride but not raft, Cherokee, NC is only II miles further up the road. More detailed information will be in the May edition of HOGWASH.

Taco Mac Ride

The Taco Mac ride was a little cold but we still had a good time. We had 11 bikes with a few more joining us at Taco Mac. The food is always and the Daytona 500 was on all the TVs including the 10 feet projectors.

Daytona Bike Week

Daytona, the weather was as good as it gets. Around 80 during the day and 60 at night equals the best weather in years. No rain, no cold, no wind, just beautiful sunny days. This year Karen and I had a house less than 2 miles from Daytona H-D, with all the conveniences it was perfect. Even David Gilmer stopped by for a night. The only down side was the number of people killed (13). I can't say enough about safe riding. After reading the circumstances surrounding some of these accidents, I can only wonder about what some of these folks were thinking. It's bad enough when cars hit us but a lot of these deaths were due to the bikers not using their heads. Please everyone ride safe and when you get around otherers, remember, we ride in large groups all the time, but not all riders are use to doing this. Don't get in a hurry, look out for each other, and always stay safe.

Chapter Ride /Attendance Contest

Just a reminder don't forget about the Chapter Ride / Attendance contest. To win you need to come to the meetings and have some fun on the rides. It looks like we will have leather jackets for prizes. Keep in mind I use the sign in sheets to keep track of the rides and attendance, so don't forget to always sign in and try to make sure I can read your handwriting. See you on the road.

Road Trip(s)

Alabama State Rally Ride, Friday May, 5 2000

Friday, May 5th I will be leading the Chapter ride to the Alabama State Rally. We will meet at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta to sign in at 9:45 AM and leave sharply at l0 AM. We will make only one gas stop on the way. The Ride will conclude at Ramada Limited Motel in Pelham, Alabama. We will be returning on Sunday, May 7th. The motel was booked early and we have members at other locations so be sure you know what exit your motel is on. You may try after the closing date of March 20th at the Ramada Limited to see if there are any cancellations. Hope to see you on the ride.

Dan Gardiner,
Ride Leader

Alabama State Rally Day Ride Saturday May 6, 2000

We will also be having a day ride on Saturday, May 6, 2000 to the Alabama State Rally. Meet at I-20, Exit 30, Post Road at the Texaco Station (left turn at exit) at 9 AM.

Dick Cadou,
Ride Leader

Cinco De Mayo Ride, Saturday May 13, 2000

On Saturday, May 13th, we will join in spirit (although we're a week late) with the Mexican celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the Mexican militia victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, and a brief period of independence from French rule. We will celebrate the independent spirit we feel every time we mount our Harleys and our own brief period of independence from work (yay-it's the week end!!).

Join us for a ride that will take us north along back roads and end up at the La Paz Mexican restaurant at Town Lake, right off I-575 for a 2:00 PM lunch. Our route will leave the shop and take us through Villa Rica, Rockmart and Cartersville (about 95 miles). The food here is excellent and features some dishes not found in many other Mexican restaurants - my favorite are the Shrimp Enchiladas with black beans, along with fantastic margaritas and cold beer (the ride will "officially" end here). The restaurant itself sits atop a hill providing a scenic view of the area and I will ask that we be seated outside on the covered patio. We hope you will join us for a fun ride and some good food.

Meeting Date/Location: Saturday, May 13th at H-D Atlanta
Meeting Time: 10:30AM Sign In/Route Coverage/Safety Briefing
Departure Time: 11:00 AM

NOTE: the "Western" group can meet us at the junction of US 78 and GA 101 in Villa Rica...no need to come to H-D and then ride back home again.

Ride Leader: Tom Sigerfoos

Myrtle Beach Bike Week, May 18-21,2000

Join our Atlanta Chapter in Myrtle Beach, SC for Bike Week festivities. Please make your reservations early! Call Allison Mull (770-486-8232) for reservations. I will be leaving H-D of Atlanta and traveling to the East side of Atlanta for a second pick-up for folks who want to start there.
